Visiting Italy ruined ice cream for me. Now I mostly eat it as a necessary adjunct to pie, so vanilla is my go-to.

Interesting about the grape soft serve, Squeak. China also has watermelon juice, which is incredibly refreshing and unavailable here for some reason (unless you make it yourself).

I have to agree, ruffdove. Gelato is hands down better than ice cream. So smooth and lovely. I'm most upset that we don't have stracciatella in the various gelato products available in the US. There's something about it that was always more than just chocolate chip ice cream (it's shaved bits of chocolate, but it's more different than that, not sure why).

Oof yeah. The grocery store near us has a couple Talenti flavors and I got their mango sorbet once just to try it. Nearly made me cry; I could picture all of my ancestors looking down on me and nodding in approval. Just the most hyper-sweet indulgence.

I have tried Talenti flavors of gelato (not sorbet), and can heartily endorse them. I think I have Caramel Cookie Crunch and Black Raspberry in my freezer right now.

If not, you're an infidel I am a big fan of Heavenly Hash, Rocky Road, etc. Something about the chocolate base, chopped nuts and especially the marshmallow goo. It's like smores, but cool. There's also a local ice cream store that does a A soft drink from Western NY, originally at Crystal Beach. It's an uncarbonated blackberry-raspberry drink, based off a spliced berry of the same name's flavor.Loganberry ice cream I adore. That stuff is made in-house, and its smooth creaminess makes the soft drink flavor sooooo much better than it already is. :9

Oh, and French Vanilla makes vanilla ice cream way better than some consider it. ;3

Gelato from my time in Catania. I still dream about the mango gelato to this day. MMMMmmmmm!

Since I can't have my beloved gelato when I desire, I'll usually settle for cookies and cream or a shake.

Late in reply, but yes, sherbet counts. My local grocery store carries an orange sherbet/vanilla ice cream combo that's fantastic. Yes, it's basically a creamsickle, but with no stick.

My favorite used to be mint chocolate chip. Still love it, but my favorite now is vanilla bean with salt. The flavor from the bean just fits and the salt stops the cloying taste ice cream sometimes has for me.

For stuff that I can just buy at the grocery store these days, I'm pretty fond of Tillamook's products. There are a couple in my freezer now, including their Marionberry Pie.

Growing up, I had a bunch of relatives in Pennsylvania, and so I also have fond memories of teaberry ice cream (neither tea nor berry, it's wintergreen!). No idea how well those memories would hold up if I went back now though!

My go-to flavor is Mint Chocolate Chip, with Cookies 'n Cream being a solid back-up.
I only recently discovered that Ben & Jerry's has a Mint Chocolate Cookie variety, which is quite good.
(I live in Blue Bell country, so there isn't much call for trying other brands)

On the rare occasion that I grace a Kroger with my presence, their store-brand Black Raspberry Dark Chocolate Chunk is a menacingly good treat.
