Carrion Hill - Dark Awakenings

Review
Application time has closed.


I’m reviewing everyone’s characters again and will be deciding later once I have time to give everyone character consideration.

So, let’s talk IRL for just one moment. Friday, I got laid off from my work, I was strongly considering running two campaigns since we had enough players to fill both… however I currently just can’t commit that kind of time, until I have a new job…. And I don’t know how demanding or amount of learning I will need for my new job is. If it is a light load and the demand of the RP is to much, I will message those who were not selected and start a second campaign. (I have a good lead for a job right now, cross my fingers, hope it pans out)

I knee jerked at first and was going to cancel the whole thing… but after I calmed down, I feel I should be fine, only because I have almost everything prepared already. But if it is to much of a distraction, I’ll have to put a pause to it. My RL > RP ☹.

Enough doom and gloom, I’ll try and have the info up by the end of the day. Thanks to everyone who applied and sorry if you don’t get picked (I hate saying no to anyone).

This module has Lovecraft / horror influences there may be graphic descriptions and scenes with horror and gore.

Version: Pathfinder 1e

Party: I need 2-3 3-4 more players (We have a Barbarian and an We have an Inquisitor already, so 1 Melee attack and 1 ranged attack already. Apply with whatever you want)
Important update: The Barbarian had to back out, if anyone wants to update their application they are welcome to do so. I apologize, this was due to a miscommunication on my end. I'm only taking one application per player. Sorry for any inconvenience. 1-28-2023

Races: Base races only

Alternate Racial Traits: Allowed

Classes: Any excluding: Gunslinger, Vigilante, Vampire Hunter, Ninja, Samurai, Anti paladin, 3rd party. (Unchained is fine)

Ability Scores: 20pt buyout

HP: Max at Lvl1, average at 2-4 (round up at level 4), for levels 5+ we will roll

Starting Level: 4 (I will use milestone leveling, expect to turn 5 early/mid game and 6 just before the end | subject to change as needed) (Start your character with 9,500 gold worth of items / Gold)

Archetypes: Limited to 1 (no 3rd party archetypes)

Alignment Restrictions: Not chaotic Evil (if evil needs to play well with group)

Traits: You can have 2 traits from different categories

Drawback: If you want a 3rd trait you must take a drawback but not required

Posting Requirements: Be active and post regularly

Applications date: Must be posted by the end of day Saturday 2-4-2023

About Carrion Hill and your reason for being there
The Scenario will start on the road to Carrion Hill. All the characters will be in a caravan group lead by an older man named Baily Von, a traveling merchant. Given your combat expertise, you were all hired to guard the caravan. (WIN! WIN! You get paid to go where you were going anyway) Each of you have a reason to be going to Carrion Hill, that is up to you (feel free to message me). You could be looking for something or someone. Maybe you’re trying to find work. You’re a local and returning home after some deal so you can pay off a debt. Perhaps you're there to find a bounty. Perhaps you’re looking to get items off the black market. Carrion Hill isn’t the nicest of places, chances are you are not there to sightsee. I’m trying to add some chances for role playing and a little spotlight for each character. (The normal campaign is mostly a dungeon crawl, so I’ll be adjusting some of the timetable to allow for this). Try to keep them local and simple, we won’t be leaving the city once everyone arrives. We can discuss these in more detail once I select players, no need to have it fully flushed out yet. Don’t post your suggested story in the application (spoilers!)

To help you, here are some brief details about Carrion Hill your character would probably know:

Carrion Hill is a neutral city with a population around 9000 and is part of the Ustalav nation. (Mostly a Human population with small pockets of Halfings, Half-Orcs, Gnomes, and Dwarfs). The city is known by traveling tradesmen as The Boil, or The Wart. Carrion Hill is a city that climbs above its southern swamps next to the Kingfisher River. It is a city that is drowned by fog and rain. The city has 3 districts: The Filth, The Tangle, and The Crown. The Nobility live atop the Hill served by the local guard called the crows (The Crown district). The Tangle, where most of the shops and citizens live. Last, the lowest part; The Filth, a mixture of islands, docks, bridges, and board walks, near the river and swamp. There are many shrines to various deities scattered throughout the city.

Rule and ownership of the city has traded hands many times threw ought its history. With each conquer rebuilding the city over the ruins of the past. Leading to many lost secrets and treasures found within the city and underneath it.

Character Name: Atwood Draven

Appearance: Tall and slender, a body of an athlete. Probably around six feet tall. Dark hair down to his shoulders and his eyes are dark brown. While there are many good looking humans, he has this unearthly beauty about him. During the day, he wears brown and green and cloak, typical ranger style, with hood over his head. At night, he refers to his all black style, becoming one with the darkness. A bow at his back and a sword at his hip with a dagger sheathed at each thigh, he looks like he can handle himself by the way he moves. He has that friendly look about him, but even though he looks young, he has that look in his eyes of someone that seen more than his age normally would..

Personality: Because life threw him a bump in the road of life, it isn't easy for him to fit in with others at times. He keeps to himself mostly, but once he is excepted, he becomes more open. He prefers the forest than cities for obvious reasons and for him, more relaxing and less tension. Sure, the forest as its own dangers, but at least he knows what to expect and he is able to be part of the forest. While he may seem like a loner, he doesn't shut himself out, he will engage and seems even outgoing, during the day though, he was a bit quieter when on the road. It could be he's on alert for any surprises, but it seems he's on guard for another reason.

Background: Born from a normal family in the city of Druma, his mother was six months pregnant when she was visited by a vampire. Unknown to others, she had kept it a secret, being under the vampire’s control When Atwood was born. The vampire had returned but was found out and chased off. A year had gone by, everything was had gone back to normal, but the mother wouldn’t take the baby outside unless covered.

The vampire had returned while the father had gone on a trip. He returned to find his wife gone and three of the guards dead. Once the boy was exposed to the sun, chaos arose and later found that the boy was a Dhampir, half human, half vampire. The father, being livid, gave the boy to one of the guards and take away and kill him.

The guard took the boy on his trip. He took a liking to the child and couldn’t kill the boy. The first huge forest he came to, he made camp, that evening bandits came and the while the guard fought hard, he was out numbered and lost at the end. Later the bandits left with their loot and left the boy to his fate.

That night, the wolves heard the boy cry and went to him. A few years later, a an old ranger and his druid wife found the child. After finding out the story from the wolves, the couple raised the child, naming him Atwood, which means “Entering the woods” and gave him Draven for a last name, meaning "Child of the Shadows”. Atwood became a ranger knew the forest when he became of age.

He became a wanderer, traveling when it suited him, having Grey, his dire wolf companion for company. He had found the cub alone and raised it. Now though, he has a normal wolf for companion, the others had died of old age. It's never easy when one dies. Being alone to live as long as the elves with no family or friends that live as long as he causes him to be depressed off and on. Anyway, because of what Atwood is, he can easily communicate with wolves without the use of a spell. He would go to towns only at sunset and leave before sunrise. Once, while he was a guide, he was asked why he covered when the sun was out. His answer was a rare skin condition, he would take his glove off and let the sun shine on it and his skin began to change, and he would put his glove back on before it would finish changing. He had done that a handful of times and the people accepted it.

The day came while in a town for the night, an older man named Bailey Von, a traveling merchant, need a few men to guard his caravan on the way to Carrion Hill. Atwood accepted, he was a bit low on coin and besides, he could find out of any rumors or any goings on around the area.

Description: Skurvin is on the shorter side at five six and does not have an athletic build. He prefers to wear well-made clothes and tasteful jewelry to display his wealth and nobility. He meticulously grooms himself; his short dark hair is always well combed and his goatee short and trimmed. He has sharp dark eyes that pierce through those they gaze upon and a tight serpentine smile.

Personality: Skurvin is a cold and calculating manipulator who is always seeking to improve his position. He sees other people as useful tools to win over, or dangerous obstacles to be removed. While he will always put his own interests first, he is not a fool. He will help his allies in order to keep their loyalty and will not betray them unless his life depends on it. He understands that he is not a strong person, and so he relies on the strength of others to achieve his goals.

Background: born the third son in a minor noble family, Skurvin was the spare of a spare and as such was given the scraps his two elder brothers didn’t want. Seen as the runt of the family, young Skurvin was often bullied by his brothers and the other high-born children. Skurvin made the mistake of trying to fight them only once. The beating he received taught him a valuable lesson; he couldn’t win playing their way, so he resolved himself to win playing his own way.

He focused on academic studies, spending most of his time in the family library with his nose in books. He perfected his social skills with the staff and learned the value of a favor. He learned how to lie, and how to threaten, not with violence, but with the revealing of their secrets, for he found that everyone had one. The maid who pocketed neglected coins to pay for her sick son’s medicine. The stable hand who had a drug addiction. The butler who had stolen his sister’s undergarments. Soon all became puppets dancing at the end of Skurvin’s strings. But it wasn’t enough. Despite having his minions, Skurvin was still nothing more than the third son of a minor noble. Skurvin longed for freedom and yearned for companionship. That’s when he heard the voice.

She whispered in his ears when he was alone in his bed drifting off to slip. She made many pretty promises of power and love. Skurvin wondered if he was losing his mind, but he answered her, and she began to teach him such secrets. He learned to cast magic. He learned to summon monsters to do his bidding. And finally, when she had earned Skurvin’s trust, she taught him how to perfume the ritual. The spell gave the voice form, and what a beautiful form it was. Blue skin, powerful claws, red hair, she was otherworldly. The two were together at last, but his happy moment did not last long. When his father saw her, Skurvin was accused of consorting with devils, and disowned. Now he wasn’t even the third some of a minor noble, he was a vagabond. But despite this he did not despair for he had the two things he wanted. Freedom, and companionship. And so, he set out into the world, determined to make something of himself. To prove his family and the world wrong.

I'm going to say no to "the elephant in the room" for now. I'm not familiar enough with it. Is there a standard "Elephant in the room" set of feats? My search returned a lot of different things.

As for the background skills I'll give it the green light. I'll update the game info at the top.

Character Specialties: Primary ranged combat, secondary melee combat, some practical skills, quirky jokes.

Description:
Standing at just three feet tall, Wilbin is of average height for a halfling but stocky, with long wavy brown hair and a youthful looking face. He has mischievous brown eyes and thin features, with an easy smile and a way of carrying himself that shows he is quite confident in himself. He has a surprisingly deep voice for his small size. Over a set of plain traveling garments he wears an ornate looking breastplate adorned with patterns of red and green and around his waist is a thick leather belt from which hangs a variety of pouches. A well made buckler emblazoned with the head of a fox is worn on his left arm, and in his right hand often carried over his shoulder is a strange looking weapon. It almost appears to be a giant slingshot at the end of a staff.

Personality:
Wilbin is all about a good time. Whether that's hammering back tankards at the local pub, slinging away in combat, or working as a sellsword, Wilbin is not much of a long range planner. Although not overly religious, he is a fan of Chaldira Zuzaristan and her philosophy so he often charges in first before he stops to assess the dangers. This also means he enjoys a good joke and a good prank, both of which he is quite fond of to do often. Despite his seemingly undisciplined ways, Wilbin is a well trained warrior and takes his skill and training very seriously. He does not mind that he is often underestimated, as that just gives him the advantage when it matters the most.

Description:

There are few, even amongst the unfaithful, who haven’t heard of Sarenrae and her edicts about redemption. They might think being a bounty-hunter would be a strange career path for one who has dedicated themselves to the Dawnflower goddess.

After all, what part of dragging a bounty back for justice has to do with redemption? Ivetta just tips her hat and smiles when someone asks such a question. The way she sees it, one must face their wrongs to begin the path of redemption. As a bounty hunter she gets to find those who are running from that path and, not so delicately, guide them back.

As for those who refuse redemptions embrace. Well, Sarenrae has teachings for that as well, swift justice delivered by the scimitar's edge. Ivetta isn’t so much worried about delivering justice as she is with delivering her quarry. If she gets to do a little good in this world and make some coin in the process, then that's good enough to put a smile on face.

She has always worked in a small group, the way she likes it. Just one partner, Dover. Well, there was that other guy, the one that the guild asked her to include. Mandated really. He had his uses. But now he was gone. That came with a slew of its own problems.

For now, it was just Dove and her. The best bounty hunting duo in the region. With her wit and his nose there no one could escape. Also, her companion Dove, he is a rather large Dog. Half wolf actually. With the cutest face and fur pattern on his forehead that resembles Sarenrae’s holy symbol. Above that is a white patch that looks kind of like a dove. That is what inspired Ivetta to name him.

Ivetta can’t help but to relate with Dove. Not wanted as a dog and rejected by wolf kind. She herself never felt fully embraced by the clergymen and the common folk kept their distance. Life traveling always seemed the best. Two lone wolves, as a pair. Always busy hunting down their next mark.

Personality:

Ivetta has always considered herself a people watcher more than a people person. She is very good at reading individuals. To a level that some get offended.

Despite this, she can handle herself in a social situation. But it always feels more like a performance than herself. Just another hurdle in between her and a bounty.

Seeing good in the world warms her heart, especially when she is involved. She often takes time to appreciate the simple things in life. A morning brew, watching clouds, and sunsets. Traveling so much has freed her mind from social complexities and formalities. Those things would only grind at her soul anyways.

The quickest way to get on her good side is to befriend Dove. She trusts his intuitions.

Description: Standing at 5'3", Silvia is clad in her white garb with blue long skirt, indicating her status as a cleric of Naderi, the goddess of drowning, romantic tragedy and suicide. She often maintains a stoic, dispassionate expression, rarely conveying her thoughts to anyone. As a symbol of her devotion to the Lost Maiden, Silvia has dyed her hair blue, which makes her stand out, serving her just fine for her purpose to preach the messages of her goddess to those who are willing to hear.

Also, as the cleric of Naderi, Silvia is armed with a dagger, the favored weapon of her goddess. Of course, Silvia prefers keeping herself away from danger, relying on her teammates and her spells to contribute in any battle. Being an Ecclesitheurge, she must never wear an armor or wield a shield, relying in her faith towards her mistress for protection.

Personality: Silvia isn't the one with the brightest personality out there, being the cleric of the goddess of tragedy and suicide, but that's not to say she is completely humorless. She is certainly melancholic and seems to constantly express sorrow and sadness to the world around her. She is also a sucker for romance, particularly tragic ones that often end with suicides. She is constantly seeking tragic stories that involve star-crossed lovers, and she doesn't seem to mind the idea of being involved in one.

Her becoming the cleric of Naderi was due to her past where she was spurned by her lover who was unfaithful to her. Driven to despair, Silvia found solace in the teachings of Naderi, the Lost Maiden. Naderi has no formal church or priesthood, though Silvia became a pupil to an older, wandering priestess of Naderi, who taught her everything about the goddess. Hoping to spread the holy words of the Lost Maiden, Silvia would soon embark on her journey as a wandering cleric of Naderi, hoping to seek out tragic romances and preach the good words of her goddess, especially to those who are lost and broken.

Despite her melancholic outlook, Silvia isn't against making friends, knowing the purpose of connections with others (though she also knows that having more friends will increase the chance of tragic romances to happen, either to herself and to others). She is withdrawn towards strangers, but can be friendly to those she considers her close companions. The quickest way to make friends with her is to tell her stories about tragic romances, especially those that end with suicides. In addition to her mission to spread the good words of her goddess, she also makes it her divine duty to compile as many stories about tragedies, forbidden romance and angsty tales of star-crossed lovers, hoping to one day establish a big church of Naderi, with all these stories being holy texts of her goddess.

Also, being a native Ustalavic, Silvia is well-versed in the art of Harrowing, or fortune-telling through Harrow cards. She sees this as another tool to advance her mission to spread the words of her goddess as well as to predict where to find tragedies next.
