Homeland: Xhorhas (Kryn Dynasty) Background: Charlatan Home Settlement: Urzin Race: Bugbear Class: Bard Family: Gus is the only surviving child of Esmerelda and Archibald Grune. When he was eight years old a house fire took the lives of his two older siblings and left his body and his relationship with his parents permanently scarred. His mother blamed herself for the incident and her natural nurturing tendencies developed into smothering overprotectiveness. Until leaving home Gus had to learn to walk the line between avoiding his mother's cloying attention and keeping her sufficiently reassured of his safety to avoid giving her a nervous breakdown. Even now he writes home regularly for fear that she will strike out after him. (Guilty. Ally.) His father never recovered emotionally and moved out to join the military where his strength and general lack of interest in self-preservation resulted in a surprisingly successful career. He still supports his wife and son to the best of his ability. He just avoids direct contact with them at nearly any cost. Gus has developed a number of clandestine skills to allow him to occasionally cross paths with and check on his dad without being noticed. (Indebted. Ally.) Ally/Rival Relationships and Identities: Funtoose, a goblin priest of the Luxon, desperately wants to wield the power to heal and use it to help the poor and the sick. Unfortunately for him, though he has the faith, he doesn't have the knack. Unfortunately for Gus his favored scam, fake healing potions, salves, and poultices, worked a little too well on the little Luxonite. Now Funtoose comes running to Gus whenever he finds some poor, decrepit soul who needs a little extra help recovering from the wound or contagion du jour. Obviously, since it's to help the poor, it would be silly to expect to get paid for his trouble. (Rival, Priest, Mooch) Fateful Moments: None Prophecies: Immediate: "Gotta figure out who's running this poison racket... and take 'em down a peg." Long Term: TBD Character Arc: TBD Appearance: Gus is naturally imposing, though not especially large by bugbear standards. His burn scars are generally hidden by his clothing except for a disfigured left ear. He fabricates a new explanation for that whenever anyone asks about it. He has worked hard to make himself more approachable than is common for his kind. He spent a lot of time practicing incorporating his fangs into a winning smile, for example. He generally tries to present himself as tidy and professional, but since his chosen profession necessitates the occasional shift in presentation he is comfortable and believable in everything from high society finery to pauper's rags. Personality: Though free of the afflicted evil common to his kind in the wider world, Gus carries some ancestral delight in skulking and frightening people. He does his best not to indulge in these habits unless he can make it look like an honest mistake, or follow up with some repartee to defuse the situation afterward. People running away are less inclined to pay him, after all. He has spent so long cultivating a respectable face for his family and a grandiose, friendly persona for use in his salesmanship and showmanship he isn't entirely sure who he really is anymore. Being authentic might be good for the soul, but it doesn't pay the bills. Character History: Gus started wandering early in life, much to his mother's dismay. A childhood spent sneaking around and pulling pranks that he had to be sure would never get traced back to him left him well-trained for a life of crime and he made a go at that more than once. He found he didn't really have the stomach for it. Then he discovered swindling. Being paid and even thanked by his marks was much more to his liking. And who was to say they didn't benefit from his potions in some way? Potato juice probably had vitamins and stuff in it, after all. A bit of work as an entertainer on the side made it easy to reassure his parents and extended family that he was keeping to the straight and narrow. The "Masked Apothecary's" clientele was growing. He was moving up in the world. His profitable tour took him as far as Nicodranas. Then things got complicated. The problem was the competition. There were always other quacks and mountebanks about. For the most part, they extended each other a degree of professional courtesy. But there was a difference between a patient getting swindled and a patient getting sold poison, followed home, and robbed while they wretched their guts out on the floor. The same instincts that had made him a poor thief made him very uncomfortable watching this, frankly, more profitable business model spread. He told himself it was going to poison the well for his own relatively innocuous scam, but there was definitely part of him that just didn't like seeing people get hurt like that. So Gus started playing the role of the patient himself every now and then. He would buy a bottle of miracle pills from an offending vendor, let himself get followed to some out-of-the-way spot where he could feign being poisoned, and then thrash the unsuspecting criminal and take back his medicine money plus interest. For some reason seeing people get hurt like that didn't bother him so much. After a couple of weeks of that things got out of hand. The people organizing the scam started noticing his efforts. The first time extra goons were sent to help with the collection he nearly lost his hide. On top of that, he'd managed to start piecing together the scope of the operation. He never hoodwinked the same salesman twice. Some of them must have seen enough of him to pass along a description. He figured out that he was being hunted just in time to duck and cover at the docks. Taking a job that would get him on a ship out of town was an easy decision. He had no aversion to honest work. And sailors need medicine, right? --- I think this app is complete... Feedback welcome!

Klaus is ready for feedback now that I finally won the battle against the codes.
@Bjorgulf I had used it once before, though only partially. This time the curiosity about what it would give me to build a character around made me apply for the game. It is a fantastic tool for getting around writer's block when making a character or to make a random generated character.

@Bjorgulf
Gotta agree with you, didn't really like my rolls, but when I started to put them together I ended up really liking the result! Last edited by Remorazz; Feb 1st, 2023 at 08:56 PM. |
