Magpie games, the makers of Masks, makes the basic moves and core playbooks (the equivalent of classes) available for free online. You can find them here under downloads: https://magpiegames.com/masks/

Hero Basics

Hero Name: Amazing Grace
Civilian Name: Amy Graysen
Playbook: Janus

Description
right-aligned image
Amy Graysen

Appearance: A first glance at Amy Graysen gives the impression of someone who is about as average as they come. She's a 16 year old girl with braces, tangled red-blonde hair, and grayish-brown eyes. Her face has round features: round nose, round cheeks, round chin; and so far as her build goes, Amy tends to wear longer-sleeved clothes and long pants so as to better hide her actual frame. She favors blue, brown, green, and white clothes, and generally doesn't stand out terribly much.

But Amazing Grace in costume has a very different style than her civilian counterpart. The heroine wears full body white tights with long black gloves and knee-high black boots. The torso of her tights (minus the shoulders) is gold, and stretches on down with a matching spandex skirt. On her chest Amazing Grace has a white sun with a black border, and she wears a black domino mask with white eyes to hide her identity. Amy's hair takes on a shimmering, sparkling quality while she's in costume, too, thanks to her light-based powers.

Personality: Anyone that has met Amazing Grace will say the same thing: she's a wise-cracking, quick-to-grin firecracker who loves to zip in out of nowhere and save the day, all while serving her opponent a one-liner. She's energetic, full of vigor and of spunk. Even her name is a joke based off a Christian hymn. Amazing Grace is cheerful, and that's that.

But Amy Graysen isn't anything like Amazing Grace. Amy is always tired. She has class in the morning, work in the afternoon, superheroics at night, and somehow she still has to find time to take care of her little sister when everything's said and done. Amazing Grace is spunky, go-lucky, and never backs down from a fight, sure. But Amy is struggling to help her grandma pay the bills for their apartment, and she's sacrificing her own education and future to make sure her little sister gets a good one. She doesn't have time for a love life, or for fun extracurriculars; she's barely got time to watch her favorite TV shows or movies when she needs a break. It leaves Amy more than a little cranky as a result, but she tries not to take that out on her little sister.

The struggle to balance all these needs wears Amy down, and the disappointment she hears from her teachers, from her boss, from people she used to call friends at school... it's unbearable. But when Amy puts on that costume, when she tugs on those gloves and flashes that smile in the mirror, she feels completely free. But she knows she can't wear the costume forever, and so she throws herself into the grinder against villains again and again and again. Amy can't always keep the lights on in the house, but Amazing Grace's light can drown the night.

Powers: Amazing Grace has the ability to partially transform her body's molecules into light, which allows her to move at superhuman speeds and even phase through objects if she focuses hard enough! She can also harden the light around her, making her tougher and stronger than the average human. In short, she's a light-based speedster!

Goals: In good part, being a superhero is a form of escape for Amy. For a few hours every day, she can forget about the bills she has to pay, about her homework and about her crappy job. She can focus on making a difference, on being someone else for just a little while, someone the whole city loves. Amazing Grace gets to pose in pictures with excited kids. She gets to zip out of a scene before nosy reporters arrive, and appear where she's needed when she's needed. She's never late. She's just great. That power makes Amy feel alive, and going back to her regular life feels like walking into a cage.

There's another, less scrupulous reason Amy does superheroic work. Amy is no villain, but every now and then when she punches out a bad guy, she'll take some money out of his wallet if she's certain nobody is looking. She feels awful about doing it; she really doesn't want to steal from anyone. However, her pizza delivery job and her grandma's social security aren't always enough to pay the rent. And she reasons she's earned that money; after all, she's saving literal lives every day. Grace is just taking what she's owed... right?

Finally, there's one more reason Amy does this work, and that's out of a genuine desire to do and be better. She wants to save lives, and she wants her little sister to have an idol to look up to. Amy might be working a dead-end job and barely getting B's and C's in school, but Amazing Grace is someone she can look up to. So, as long as her little sister Rachel is around, Amy is going to put on the white-and-gold.

Background

Amy Graysen was born on the wrong side of the tracks quite literally. She grew up in a poor neighborhood not too far from the city's railway system. Her dad worked a factory job and her mom worked in a cafe, and they both tried to make what time they could for Amy and her little sister Rachel. They didn't have any fancy electronics or toys, and their landlord was an ass, but the Graysens made ends meet. They were poor, but they were together. That meant something.

Things started to get better for the family when Amy's dad got a job working for some fancy professor. He jumped from being just another hand in a worn-down factory to working in a place that was truly state of the art. Of course, Amy's dad never talked much about his job, and Amy overheard a few arguments between her mom and dad about the job. Her mom seemed to think it wasn't safe; her dad insisted the risk was worth the money...

Perhaps Amy shouldn't have been shocked when she heard the news, but she was. Her dad had been arrested in a firefight between the police and the minions of Doctor Mayhem, some crackpot mad scientist supervillain. Her dad was one of Mayhem's goons; the factory he'd been working at was full of all kinds of illegal technology, all of it very volatile and dangerous. Dad got life in prison for his part in the whole affair. Then, three months into her dad's sentence, Amy got called into the principal's office while she was at school. Her mom had died of a heart attack.

There wasn't any family nearby that could take Amy and Rachel in, nobody except her grandmother. Her grandmother wasn't exactly in great health herself, but she got custody of the kids and did her damnedest to take care of them. As years went by, she started having more trouble walking around the house, and she became more dependent on Amy to help her out. Then her grandmother's retirement savings ran out, and the family was living off social security. So, Amy got a job delivering pizza, and her grades started to slip, not that she cared anymore.

Amy doesn't know exactly how she got her powers. She has theories, of course. Maybe it was something she was exposed to the one time her dad was transporting some volatile equipment for Dr. Mayhem. Maybe some of that stuff he kept hidden in the house before it got confiscated by the cops had some sort of effect on her. Maybe she's just weird. She doesn't know for sure. What Amy does remember is exactly when she got her powers. Someone tried to rob her while she was delivering pizza, and the moment she saw an opportunity, she ran. Only, she ran really fast, impossibly fast, so fast that the world became a blur. When she stopped, she realized she was halfway across town.

Since then, Amy's been living a double life. By day she gets through school. After school she delivers pizzas, and in between deliveries she uses her super speed to switch into her costume and find some bad guys to punch. When that's done, she goes home to take care of her little sister, Rachel; that means cooking, cleaning, talking to her sister about her day at school, and helping her with her homework. Then Amy goes out again in the night to punch more bad guys, and only after that does she zip back home and go to bed. Every day is the same except the weekends, and on those she has to pay the bills and spend time with her sister.

Amy hasn't joined a superhero team yet. She knows it'd be safer, and she's thinking about trying to get into one. But for now, Amazing Grace has work to do, and she'll work alone if she must.

Why: This is a boring answer, but I love superheroes. I'm not as well read in comics as I should be, but I love the struggles that superheroes have, and the crisis of identity that tends to permeate the genre. I also think forum roleplay is uniquely well suited to playing a superhero, and I feel like the focus Masks puts on character relationships and on their social obstacles is vital for the genre.

As far as what narratives I'd like to explore, I'm interested in...
- The exploration of Amy's double life
- Not being able to be everywhere at once (despite being the fastest person in town!)
- Family relationships (her dad, grandma, sister)
- Financial struggles
- How others in the setting will view Amazing Grace
- Really, any other themes you want to toss in; I'm flexible!

Blue Rose II
left-aligned image
right-aligned image
Hero Name: Blue Rose II

Civilian Name: Audrey Takahashi

Playbook: The Legacy

Description: There are not many differences between Blue Rose II and Audrey Takahashi, except that Blue Rose II is dressed in her hero attire, which consists of white-and-blue armless leotard, armbands and boots, while Audrey is dressed in civilian attire, often stylish and fashionable. She also wears a white headband with a blue rose on it. She inherited the costume and slightly modified it from her mother, Blue Rose I. Her blue hair and red eyes are due to her divine bloodline.

Powers: Blue Rose II inherited the powers from her mother, Blue Rose I, which include mythic might and legendary speed. Her powers seem to be originated from divinity, blessing her bloodline. She is capable of conjuring ice and manipulating temperature. In addition to that, she can also create divine armor and and magic weapon out of ice, making her quite a formidable combatant. Her divine beauty can also be attributed to her bloodline.

Goals: Blue Rose II wishes to be a part of a teenage super hero group because of her desire to emulate her predecessor, Blue Rose I, who is also her mother. She is aware of the weight of her own legacy, and she does not want to let her mother down by sullying her mother's name by being mediocre. While there is also her desire to forge her own path, she is more dedicated in making her mother proud.

Background: Audrey Takahashi was born to Himiko and George Takahashi. Ever since she was young, Audrey was exposed to all the exploits of her mother, Himiko Takahashi, who was also known as Blue Rose, a super heroine with ice powers and unearthly beauty. Greatly admiring her mother, Audrey wished that one day that she could become a hero just like her. And at some point, Blue Rose revealed her own real identity to the public, and her real name became a public knowledge.

Audrey started manifesting the same powers as her mother as she grew older, and seeing potentials in her own daughter, Blue Rose started training her to become her successor. Despite her civilian identity already being a common knowledge among the populace, Blue Rose managed to live a normal life with her family. Still, the public managed to learn about Blue Rose training her own successor, and Audrey had to attend a private school in order to keep the media from hounding her.

Soon, after her seventeenth birthday, Audrey was finally given the mantle of Blue Rose by her mother, who decided to retire from being a super heroine. Adding her own touch on the outfit, Blue Rose II started her hero career. Just like her mother, her real identity was found out real quick, though she made no real attempt to actually hide her civilian identity. Her peers seemed to recognize her as the new Blue Rose, and while she often found herself in the spotlights, she didn't have any real problem living her civilian life.

Personality: Audrey does not act differently whether she is in her costume or out of it. Always earnest, she is good-natured and is always willing to fight for the good of the people. But her main motivation to become a hero is to impress her own mother, her predecessor and the former bearer of Blue Rose's mantle. While she may try to fulfill her duty as a hero splendidly, her desire to make her mother proud can get in her way.

Because she has no secret identity, the public knows her as Blue Rose, even her own peers. She is unbothered by the spotlights, even willing to revel in them. She sees no need in maintaining a false persona for herself, showing her true self no matter she is donning her super hero getup or otherwise. While this does restrict her social life somewhat, she is already used to it, even knowing a few tricks to avoid putting herself in the limelight.

Why: I've always wanted to try out a Superhero RPG, and this is going to be interesting. I've got the gist of how this game works, but it'll take a little bit more reading before I can fully understand the system.

story Hero is the son of two super heroes. But both died when he was too young to remember. He grew up in a orphanage. He knows only his first name and that his parents were supers.

He was not born with his powers so he was bullied. So he studied martial Arts. He also weight lifts on his own. He knows one day he may develop powers, but figures if he trains hard when he does he can control them better.

He never was keen on being popular but since he started high school others have tried to get him into sports. So he joined the track team. He could be the captain of baseball or football teams but he's a loner at heart. Being on the track team doing the 2 mile run. He can be part of the team but alone at the same time. Of course this doesn't keep others from trying to get him into the other sports. He really enjoys running too. It's as if the world dissapears and hits just him. He clears his head and has time to think. When not running for track he runs 5 miles for himself.

Between track, school, and martial Arts he doesn't have much free time for a job. But he's so good they made him a part time instructor, and part time janitor. This covers the bills and a few extras. Since his master let him start staying in the back room of the dojo. That was a year ago when the orphanage said he was to old to stay anymore. State funding didn't cover 16 and up.

Hero probably could have a girlfriend if he wasn't such a loner. He could spend less time Weight lifting, training and running but he enjoys those things to much. This year he got to sign up for weightlifting as a elective class, so he don't have to at home but does anyway. And doesn't have to run outside of track. But we'll there's nothing else for him to do.

His only friend is his master. He could have friends but all the kids want to do is smoke drink use drugs and party. He doesn't do any of that. He finds he really doesn't have anything in common with them. He really doesn't have to worry about being bullied any more. But he will fight them to protect others. It's like it's what he was born to do protect others. It's what makes him different than the popular kids. Then there's the fact all his clothes are black. Everyone knows he's different they just don't know how much. Soon everyone may know.

Hero hasn't activated his powers yet so he hasn't become part of his legacy. But all it takes is to be put in the right situation...

Hero doesn't know this but his parents saved the world once. That was what got them killed their sacrifice saved everyone. Including the team they were on. To bad no one on the team knew about him. Although if they were to see Hero today they'd swear it was their friend who died. For Hero looks much like his father..

Hero's parents were heroes everyone liked. But they were so well known for talked about that Hero was ever told more than that. They have faded from the public's memory. ( It was the babysitter that dropped him off at the orphanage. His records were sealed. So even their identity was hidden from him.)

Hero only knows his parents died heroes. So he never thought about it. He is however proud of them. What he doesn't know is much of his thoughts are the same as his father's. He hates bullies cause his father did, and cause he himself was bullied. He hates evil cause his father did. But it's his mother's protective instincts that he inherited to stand up for others.

Hero really does want friends and doesn't know why he don't fit in with others. A team of supers is kinda what he's looking for even though he doesn't know it.

Legacy Hero's family legacy was an important part of the city's past. But has been forgotten by all but his parents former team mates.
Both his parents died so no active legacy. Hero is the next in line for the mantle. The most dangerous foe his parents never faced died with them. As for the next most dangerous well only their former team knows that.
The traditions of his legacy is martial Arts , honor, to protect others. And to lead. As his parents lead and inspired their team. But most of all use your powers to do good. ( Trates he inherited).
Hero's parents protected people with their lives. That is all he knows of their legacy.
If he were to save even 1 life his parents would have been proud. As that is what they did.

why play Well if you look at my drawings you see all you need to know. I write draw and create comics. nothing published. But back in 2000 my HS art teacher sent in some of my drawings to image. They said if I got 2 yeears of art college credits they'd hire me. Sadly I joined the army instead of go to college. And that opportunity was lost.
