War for the Crown

Game NameWar for the Crown
Game SystemPathfinder
ThemePolitical Intrigues & Fantasy Subterfuge
FlavourSurviving intrigues and fights to become the national heroes of Taldor
Adventure Background

APPLICATION: CLOSED

Every year, the empire of Taldor celebrates the Grand Day of Exaltation. On this prestigious day, the Grand Prince is empowered to elevate a commoner to the ranks of nobility. The event itself is the embodiment of formality, with the elevated commoner selected months or years in advance. What makes the day truly special is that the preceding week is a holiday throughout the empire. Nobles, senators, and hopeful petitioners fill the capital city of Oppara for galas, performances, and parades. This flood of visitors swells Oppara to almost double its size, and many view the lead-up to the Grand Day of Exaltation as harking back to the glory days of the empire. To the nobility, the week before the Grand Day of Exaltation is a time to conduct important business deals, issue noble proclamations, and hold private parties. With so many prominent politicians arriving from across the empire, the Taldan senate uses Exaltation Week to vote on matters of nationwide importance.

This year's Grand Day of Exaltation is poised to mark a historic shift in the governance of the empire. Princess Eutropia, daughter of Grand Prince Stavian III, has forged a powerful coalition of noble bastard children, reformers, and - perhaps, most importantly - senators to vote down the ancient law of primogeniture. The law states that royal power can pass only to a male heir - a succession that cannot be enacted due to Eutropia's status as the current Grand Prince’s sole heir. Rumors have circulated about the princess’s quest to strike down primogeniture for years, and the nation remains divided on the vote, with several nobles viewing it as a shameless power grab by Princess Eutropia. Others see Eutropia as a stabilizing force that could unify the empire and usher in a new golden age for Taldor.

Princess Eutropia is the firstborn child of Grand Prince Stavian III. She stepped forth into the political arena only following the death of her younger brother 20 years ago. Prince Carrius II, like Eutropia, was beloved by the people of Taldor, and many hoped the boy would succeed his ineffective father and usher in an era of change. When the prince died in what was reported as a riding accident, Eutropia's grief uncovered a deep well of empathy. More understanding of death and suffering, she became a crusader for the poor and for the basic rights of every Taldan citizen. As her work repeatedly ran up against the old-fashioned values of Taldor, Eutropia became a crusader for women's rights as well.

The story begins as the Grand Day of Exaltation approaches. Princess Eutropia and her allies stand poised to end primogeniture and pave the road to the first empress of Taldor. But Grand Prince Stavian III has grown paranoid and embittered, fueled by his jealousy towards her popularity among the people, and in Stavian’s paranoid mind, Eutropia’s bid for power can only mean that she is planning to kill him and usurp his throne. Unwilling to give up his power or his life so easily, Grand Prince Stavian III formed a secret alliance with various agents from neighboring nations - Andoran bankers, Chelish nobles, and Galtan royalists - to import a small private army. Rather than stop the senate's vote, Stavian intends to let the wheels of politics turn, and then execute his daughter and those who supported her actions as traitors to the empire as they celebrate their victory!

Game DetailsSystem: Pathfinder 1st Edition
How Many Players to be Chosen: 4 to 5 players.
Starting Gold: Max gold.
Elephant in the Room Feat Tax: Yes
Level Up Progression: Level ups at certain points

Who are You?What sort of character are you? A champion for social reform? A scheming vizier looking to secure his or her own wealth and power? A dashing lothario looking to woo every pretty face in the empire? A military grunt with a sturdy sword? The answer: any of these ideas and more. While War for the Crown contains a fair amount of clandestine work and social interaction, it still has its fair share of monsters to slay and dungeons to delve. Whatever a character's motivation is for diving into Taldan politics, there should be opportunities aplenty.

You will be working under Marteela Lotheed, a Taldan noble of half-Qadiran descent, and she is an aspiring spymistress serving under Princess Eutropia, and you will be her agent to ensure that the princess will be able to secure her ascension to the throne as the future empress of Taldor. Regardless of background, you should have a vested interest in preserving Taldor as a nation, and be willing to work alongside others to accomplish that greater goal.

Campaign Traits

Each player character should select one of the following campaign traits as one of their two traits available at character creation:

Athletic Champion: Your physique and skill brought you into the public eye, and a winning smile helps you stay there. Taldor honors its extraordinary athletes, celebrating them as cultural heroes. Whether you were a gladiator, a runner, a wrestler, or any other competitor, your most recent victory caused someone important to sit up and take notice. You may never have a political career in front of you, but for now your name is helping to bring a little extra money in, and maybe that’s good enough. Select two of the following skills: Climb, Diplomacy, Perception, and Swim. You gain a +1 trait bonus on checks with those skills, and they are always class skills for you. In addition, you are accustomed to maneuvering through crowds; you gain a +2 trait bonus on checks to navigate through a crowd or resist being moved against your will, including spells and bull rush, drag, and reposition combat maneuvers.

Child of Oppara: You belong to a noble family that matters in Taldor, though as the story begins you may or may not be on good terms with your relatives. Your upbringing among the city's well-to-do gives you an upper hand when it comes to knowledge of high society, and you start the game with a modest inheritance. With Princess Eutropia's efforts to provide for Taldor's common citizens and overturn years of tradition, new lines are being quietly drawn in the sand, and you have found yourself embroiled in these intrigues whether you intended to be or not. With this trait, the assumption is that you belong to a minor noble family (and can make up your family name). In this case, your family keeps a small manor in Aroden's View or Senate's Hill. If you want to be a member of one of Oppara's major noble families, you must take the Noble Scion feat at 1st level. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Appraise and Knowledge (nobility) checks, and one of these skills is always a class skill for you. The Noble Scion feat does not have a Charisma prerequisite for you. In addition, you start play with a noble’s outfit, a signet ring, and a single additional nonmagical item worth no more than 200 gp.

Disgraced Noble: Your noble family used to matter, until your father took a stand against Maxillar Pythareus, the commander of Taldor's military. True or not, the accusations Pythareus leveled against your family in return destroyed your reputation and isolated you from the society you grew up in. Now the only thing that matters to you is clawing your way back up the social ladder, either for your own quality of life or to clear your family's name. You've had to practice deception as you began working your way back into Taldan social circles; you gain a +2 trait bonus on Bluff checks to conceal your identity and a +2 bonus on Linguistics checks to spot or produce forgeries, and one of these skills is always a class skill for you. Once each day, you can choose a single humanoid you believe to have been involved in the conspiracy to destroy your family; you gain a +1 morale bonus on attack and damage rolls against that NPC for a number of rounds equal to your character level. At 10th level, this bonus increases to +2.

Rising Star: All too often, great minds must suffer for their art, but you're one of the lucky ones. Your skills attracted the attention of a noble patron who pays for your food, housing, and tools. As your patron introduces you to other cultural elites, you're slowly learning to navigate the treacherous waters of high society, but you still remember the lean times when each meal was a hard-won treasure. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Sense Motive and Survival checks, as well as checks using a single Craft or Perform skill of your choice; one of these skills is always a class skill for you. Once each day, you can invoke your patron's reputation or name one of your own prominent works to gain a +2 circumstance bonus on a single Bluff, Diplomacy, or Intimidate check. You begin the game with a masterwork musical instrument or tool appropriate to the Craft or Perform skill you selected, a gift from your patron.

Senatorial Hopeful: While you belong to a noble family, hailing from the outlying prefectures means you lack the pull and wealth needed to rub shoulders with the stars of Oppara's social scene. Your life has been quiet, isolated from the thrum of fashion and pop culture, but you see this as a source of insight and aim to help people by someday joining the senate. It'll be a long journey, but you’ve already begun learning which hands to shake and how to listen carefully when others tell you what they want. You gain a +1 bonus on Diplomacy and Knowledge (local) checks, and both of these skills are always class skills for you. Once each week you can call on family connections to obtain a single piece of equipment or consumable magic item (such as a potion or scroll) worth up to your character level × 25 gp. Delivery of the goods you request takes 1d4 days. At 10th level, the potential value of a magical item increases to your character level × 50 gp, and your requests can also include spellcasting services and wands.

Taldan Patriot: You love your country, its history, and its people... even though they may not love you back. Whether you're a bureaucrat, a minor noble, or a soldier, you want your community to be the best it can be and you channel that love into a position in service to the people of Taldor. You gain a +1 bonus on all Sense Motive and Knowledge (history) checks, and these skills are always class skills for you. In addition, once per day you can recall a specific fact about a Taldan noble's personality - quirks such as a hobby or pet peeve - including information you would normally learn as a discovery check in social combat.

Young Reformer: Perhaps you were born at the bottom of Taldan society and you're tired of seeing your friends and family toil endlessly with no hope of a better life, or maybe your privileged outlook was shattered by empathy or tragedy. Either way, you know the system is broken, and you've dedicated your life to fixing it. But tradition rules Taldor as much as any Grand Prince, and change requires more influence than you have… so far. You’ve got a few friends and allies, and plenty of determination, but while you work toward the power you need to change the nation, you’ll have to resort to more discrete ways of righting wrongs and curbing the abuses of the upper class. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Disable Device and Knowledge (local) checks, and one of these skills is always a class skill for you. Once per day, you can call upon your co-conspirators to have "made arrangements" on your behalf, allowing you to attempt a Knowledge (local) check in place of a single Bluff, Disable Device, Intimidate, or Sleight of Hand check. The DC of this Knowledge (local) check is equal to the DC of the skill check it replaces. Whatever arrangements you make - for doors left unlocked, guards strong-armed out of your way, stolen keys left for you to find - must be reasonable to have anticipated and achieved beforehand; you could arrange to have a noble convinced you're a very important diplomat traveling in disguise, for example, but if a fight breaks out you could not rely on your network of contacts to feint for you in combat. You don't have to use this ability in advance; you can announce its use as you encounter a challenge, implying you foresaw this challenge and made arrangements prior to your arrival.

Character CreationName: Write the name of your character here.
Race: Taldor is an extremely humanocentric empire with little regard for non-humans. Non-human races that aren't elves, dwarves or aasimars will find themselves having a hard time here. It doesn't mean you cannot choose other races, because it may spice things up (for better or worse, hard to tell).
Class: Anything Paizo (Core/Base/Alternate/Hybrid/Occult). Archetypes allowed. The character starts at Level 1. No Unchained.
Stat Generation: 25 point buy.
Traits: Choose 1 Campaign Trait from the list provided and 1 other trait. You will also have to choose a Drawback.
Drawback: Look above.
Alignment: You are backing a Neutral Good authority figure, thus you are working for her best interest. Which means Good or Neutral alignments are recommended. You may choose Evil alignments, though not recommended.
History: Write at least a paragraph of your character's history. Please make sure that your character's history matches with your chosen Campaign Trait. You can also describe how you get to know Marteela Lotheed to become one of her agents.
Personality: Write at least a paragraph of your character's personality.
Appearance: Provide both picture and written description of your character.

Looks fantastic. Intrigue and political mystery. Are there any limits in character creation in terms of source books?

Well, I'd say that evil councilors will find themselves at home here in the setting.

Are occult classes allowed? This feels like a perfect campaign for a silksworn occultist.

Edvard Lorange
right-aligned image

Name: Edvard Lorange
Race: Human
Class: Witch (Cartomancer)
Stat Generation: 25 point buy.
Traits: Young Reformer (Kn: Local), Child of the Streets
Drawback: Paranoid
Alignment: Chaotic Good

History
Edvard is Taldor born and raised, but the wrong kind of Taldan. He grew up in the narrows, where he watched first his grandparents, then his parents, work themselves to an early grave with nothing to show for it. No growing wealth, no movement to a better district, no opportunities for the next generation. Because in Taldan who you were born to and who you know are the only things that matter. Edvard's situation has changed somewhat though, his great grandmother left him her old Harrow deck, and in some way that he didn't understand, he drew power from them. He knew for sure that his grandmother hadn't had any strange abilities, so this seemed to be a new thing, but he wasn't going to look a gift-gryphon in the mouth.

Joining with other like-minded individuals throughout the narrows and the other districts, Edvard takes on the difficult task of both protecting the poor districts from rampant crime as well as promoting a populist reformation agenda. They set up printing spots where they churn out a pamphlet called the Taldor Tattler, where they expose corruption in the upper classes and call out thieves and bullies in their own communities. The Taldor watch keeps finding and raiding their press to shut them down, but soon enough they pop up in a new local.

One of the things Edvard is most proud of is making sure the criminal gangs of the Narrows considered orphans and orphanages off-limits. It was these two things mostly that brought him to the attention of the agents of Marteela Lotheed, who were looking to get the commoners on the side of Princess Eutropia and seeking out the aid of local leaders.

Personality
Edvard has a malleable personality. He is jovial and talkative at times, dark and intimidating at others, and angry and violent at still others. However, his over-arching personality trait is goal-driven and focused.

Appearance:
Edvard dresses as who he is: a resident of the Narrows. His clothes are tattered and patched, including his favorite hat that he almost always wears. He is of average height and build for a human man in his early twenties, standing 5'8" and 155 lbs. His eyes are brown and his hair is black, with a slightly crooked nose that was undoubtedly broken at some time in the past.

Application for War for the Crown
left-aligned image

Name: James Randall Loxley, aka “Rickard Julienne”

Race: Human

Class: Monk (Drunken Master)

Stat Generation: 16/14/14/10/14/10

Traits: Disgraced Noble, If you'll allow me to substitute alcohol for potions - if not, I will revisitAccelerated Drinker

Drawback: Power Hungry

Alignment: Lawful Neutral

History:
It was a cruel twist of fate that the father of James Randall Loxley was imprisoned for the very crime he tried to prevent. His role as the royal exchequer for the kingdom of Taldor had been unmarred by any sort of corruption or suspicion, so it was with great surprise to the upper echelon of government that Trevor Loxley should be accused of such a great crime. The truth of the matter never came to light – to the public, at least. In private, deep in the bowels of the Taldori dungeon, Trevor Loxley was threatened into silence. After all, one does not simply go against Maxillar Pythareus, the leader of the military, and expect to live the night. But Trevor knew he was right, knew that Pythareus had been funneling gold into his own coffers via the funding provided to the military. His naivete in confronting the commander first allowed the scoundrel to sic his inner guard on the nobleman. In the dead of night, they had come - three men clad in dark steel, and without a word had slapped James’s father in irons and dragged him away. There was nothing Trevor could do from his cell. His ledgers had been doctored to point the blame at Trevor himself, and he had been warned that if he spoke of the matter to anyone, anyone at all, they would kill his family. Heartbroken, Randal Loxley was left to languish in his cell until his recent passing from consumption.

Unable to survive in the city under the name of Loxley, James’ mother relocated herself, James, and his younger sister Corinna. They changed their names and moved to a different neighborhood in the city, one with higher crime and much less in the way of opportunity. James – or Rickard Julienne, as he goes by now, has had a tough go of life. There are few positions of importance available for a stranger of unknown lineage in the city of Taldor, and fewer still for family of a convicted embezzler. But it’s alright – really. Because James has a secret, one that only he himself knows. James was awake the night his father was taken, and he saw the faces of those three men and the sigils they wore. He knew his father was a good man, a great man, and his heart broke in twain to hear of his passing. It hurt – hurt more than anything, and it drove him to drink. But it also gave him purpose.

James swore he would see those who caused the death of his father put to justice, whether that be at the end of the hangman’s rope, or the other end of James’s own bleeding fists. And it wasn't too long after his twenty-sixth birthday that he was visited by an interested party, a curious woman named Marteela Lotheed. She came with a curious work opportunity that James could tell had the potential to lead him to the fish he sought.

Personality: James learned to channel his anger into strengthening his body, for he knew he would have to be a living weapon if were to take on Pythareus' lackeys, not to mention the commander himself. He is quiet by nature, mostly because he prefers to let his fists do the talking - but also because he fears ever letting slip who he really is. He has found the best way to cope with the anger is to drink, and drink he does. More often than not, he fights with one hand and drinks with the other, and woe to he who would ever spill this living bull's drink. The sort-of good news is that he's actually less mean when drinking, so when it comes to social interaction he is usually very sloshed.

Appearance: James wears no armor, nor any sort of flashy garments to indicate his actual social status. He wears simple cotton garments, a shirt dyed black and comfortable stretchy slacks dyed indigo. He wears prescription glasses that have smoked black lenses, the better to hide his eyes from any who might recognize his face, and his black shoulder length hair either flies free or is kept under a black knit watch cap. His facial hair is always kept well-groomed in a goatee, although he will occasionally grow sideburns. He is a physically imposing man with bulging biceps, but he does not flaunt his physicality unless provoked.

My character needs a charge for concept and mechanics, so if anyone's making some sort of noble and needs a halberd with a faceless bodyguard attached, hit me up.

Hi! I started an account on here a couple years ago but didn't end up applying to any games because life but real busy. I've got a good bit more time for gaming now, though, and PbP fits my free time situation fantastically. Pathfinder is my favorite tabletop RPG so I've been hunting around for PF games specifically.

War For The Crown is one of the few APs I don't know a whole lot about, so I am excited to take a shot at this. On top of that, this seems like a great opportunity for my favorite archetype of my favorite class: Arcane Duelist Bard! I'm thinking a reform-minded Child of Oppara on the outs with her family over the emergent political schism.

I'll should have a proper application posted up by the end of the weekend.
