Borz Melikov WIPName: Borz Melikov
right-aligned image

Allegiance: Zero Ronin

Appearance: A rough Eastern European man from devastated Chechnya, Borz sports a rough black beard, multiple scars, a black beanie and a beat up old jacket. Borz has always had a menacing look to him, with the grizzled features of a born fighter. His wide, unnerving grin has never helped in that regard, as the way his eyes light up is very concerning. Borz is built strong, being raised in the countryside of Chechnya, and stands at an intimidating six foot eight.

Background: Priest. Borz grew up in Chechnya. When Brittania came to conquer Chechnya Borz fought against them with his fellow citizens. They knew they would be no match for the empire, but they had their traditions and ways at stake, and few cared to live in a land ruled by the empire. Ultimately, after months of protracted guerrilla warfare, the empire had enough and leveled the country. Borz found himself one of the only remaining Chechens on earth. With little left to turn to, Borz turned to the only Sufi mystic alive in ruined Chechnya. Together with the few other living Chechens, they performed the rites of the dervish. Every day they danced in their dusty circle as long as they were able, hoping that some voice would guide them. Only one heard the voice of most holy Allah, Borz. Led by this voice, Borz found himself sneaking into Area 11.

Triggers:

-Survive +2
-Inspire +2
-Blow Something Up: Using Explosives +2

Geass power: Seal of Righteous Retribution. Redirect Geass attempts from others to a nearby target within line of sight.

Application
Name: Kenichi "Ken" Landsfall

Allegiance: The Holy Britannian Empire

Appearance: Ken has jet black hair that seems to only now be growing out from a much shorter, utilitarian cut. Softly Asiatic features complete the look to make him easily pass for Japanese with a casual glance. His height, average for a Britannian, makes him stand out a little in Area 11, but not disproportionately so. It is his eyes — which look black from a distance, but are a dark sapphire-blue up close — which truly betray his mixed heritage. They sparkle with determination, or not at all, with Ken's experience at not drawing attention to himself. Ken's bearing shifts with the crowd — upright and confident among fellow knights, righteous and eager among the nobility, and just a tad hesitant and insignificant when he finds himself among a group of Elevens.

Background: Spec Ops — Kenichi was born as a result of the attempts by Japan at appeasement of the Holy Britannian Empire, a child of the Marquess of Landsfall and his second wife, a Japanese woman from the Munakata family named Kuriko. Raised in Japan, Kenichi had an actual happy childhood, completely ignorant of the fact that his father had been setup as a sacrifice to deceive Japan's government about Britannia's inevitable interest in conquest — a strategy which was doubled-down upon when Lelouch and Nunnally were essentially handed over to Japan as hostages-in-all-but-name.

When Japan was invaded, Kenichi's family was imprisoned immediately by the government. His father was labelled a Britannian collaborator, and spy. Despite being untrue, the Marquess confessed to the trumped up charges and took his own life, in exchange for the guaranteed safety of his wife and twelve year-old son. The Munakata family took Kenichi and his mother under their protection, although they eventually revealed their location to Britannia after the invasion was over. Kenichi then took his place as a third son, and fifth child of Landsfall, and his mother was essentially indentured as a house servant among his own family. The excuse given for her treatment? That her family failed to protect the Marquess.

Ken's life among his extended family was much worse than his childhood. He was ill-favored by his half-siblings, and was the subject of whispers and bullying during his Britannian schooling. His determination to break out of the mold of a lesser son though helped him finish his schooling as fast as possible, and volunteer for the military. He enlisted as an officer, and made an agreement — a five year term of service with re-enlistment possible — for Honorary Britannian status for his mother. It pained him greatly to make such a deal because his mother deserved that status through her marriage, but if that was the only way to take care of her he'd do it.

So Ken was put through training as a knight, and as a spy. He was surprised to find that the knights he trained with were far more welcoming to him despite his semi-questionable heritage, except for a clique of pure-bloods who resisted all impurities be removed from the Britannian military. Eventually he just learned to avoid those kinds of people. Agreeing to do just about the most dangerous task anyone could take on — infiltrate the Japanese resistance — Ken didn't expect to have to work alongside the more prejudiced knights much, if at all. He was deployed as a spy in Area 11 when he was seventeen-and-a-half, 2-3 years before the present day. His salary went entirely to keep his mother in a small but comfortable apartment in an excellent building in the Homeland.

Ken's cover was as a Japanese half-blood originating from the E.U. who repatriated out of distaste for Britannia, and a desire to free Japan so that it could help support Europe. He eventually joined the Yamato Alliance, a rebel organization operating out of the Saitama Ghetto.

His time as a spy finished, and his deployment in Area 11 confirmed, his mother insisted she return to her homeland so that she could be closer to her son, who she hadn't heard from in years. While Ken resisted her request, he couldn't find it in himself to force her to stay in Britannia, knowing that the prejudice there was infinitely worse than what her life would be like in Area 11. Now he's determined to bring a real lasting peace to Area 11, and to create the atmosphere and society of true equality and merit of Britannia's most optimistic ideal, so that his mother can live in peace for the rest of her days.

Triggers:

+2 Stay Cool
+2 Act Unseen or Unheard
+2 Take Someone Out
+2 Charm

Geass Power: "The Seal of Compulsory Truth" — Knowledge is power, and secrets are some of the most powerful pieces of knowledge to possess. So what if you could compel people to tell you their secrets? With the power of this geass, Ken can make that a reality. He's detested lies since his father was forced to comply to the false narrative of the Japanese government to save Ken and his mother's lives, and living the life of a spy hasn't made him appreciate them any more. His one major failure was failure to discover a secret.

Requiring a moment of eye contact to activate, the "Seal of Compulsory Truth" forces a target to answer three questions — or make three requested explanations — during which the target cannot act to avoid doing so, including fleeing or trying to harm the user. While active Ken is also forced to speak truths, but he isn't forced to answer questions or volunteer information. After answering three questions the power cannot be used on someone again, but the answers don't have to happen at once — the geass can be de-activated on a person after one question only to be re-activated again later. The target of the geass doesn't remember anything out of the ordinary about the conversation they have under its influence — they justify sharing whatever they did in their own minds — but as a result they may let slip to others that they've shared information they absolutely weren't supposed to. Eavesdroppers are likely to be suspicious of the ease with which people under the influence of this geass share information, since it's unlikely to be used except for things that really aren't supposed to be shared.

Name: Nigel Archibald Henry George Charles Edward Thornberry The Third
Callsign: Dynasty

Allegiance: Britannia

Appearance: At a solid 5 feet tall, solid and rontund build, blazing red hair and mustache and a very large nose. The very ideal of a british gentleman

Background: Soilder - A military man all his life. Nigel lives, breaths and eats Britannia. He whole heartedly believes in the Empires cause and inherant superiority. He joined the military from the moment he could, leaving his British family behind and he has never looked back. Rising through the ranks, he's been fighting the Empire's enemies for years. After the Rebellion his belief in the Empire strengthened. Seeing the damage these rebels were doing to the land he loved, he needed to act. To prevent such horrors from occuring again. The Zero Ronin were terrorists and cowards through and through. They must be stamped out and executed for the good of all. Only then would there be peace. Only then could the Empire truly become an unblemished utopia.

Triggers: Assault, Inspire, Stay Cool, Blow Things Up

Geass power: The Inspiration Of Patriots: Nigel can hold the attention of those in a 15m radius around him for 60 seconds. Any kind of hostile action breaks the effect, as does physically interacting with the subjects. But otherwise, Nigel has their complete and undivided attention for a full minute

RP example:

Nigel approached the podium. He was accepting an award for battle field prowess just before his transfer to a post in Area 11, they asked him to give a speech as he accept this aware. He was only too happy to oblige. He cleared his throat and began.
"Men. I am honored to accept this. As I am honored to have fought beside each and every one of you. It has been decreed that I am to serve elsewhere. In the morning I am off to a new posting in Area 11, but I wish you all to remember that I will have found memories of you all. During my time here we have done great work in securing this area and upholding the substantial example His Imperial Majesty Emperor Charles Zi Britannia sets for us all. I cannot think of a finer body of men than those gathered here that has upheld his message.. His Imperial Majesty's Empire stands on the brink of a new era. One filled with chaos and destruction. The Zero Ronin think they have won a victory. They have not. They have merely awoken the Imperial Dragon. We. Will. Crush. Them. We killed their cowardly leader Zero, and we will drag the rats out into the light and put them down like the mangy dogs they are. Oceans Rise, Empires Fall. But Not Britannia, Not Today.

Character Application: Kenshi Minato

We shall revive Japan at all costs.

left-aligned image

Name: 賢史・港Kenshi Minato

Callsign: 武士道Bushidō

Allegiance: Zero Ronin

Appearance: A formally dressed Japanese man

One first notices the huge circular spectacles Minato wears at all times. His face is long and pale, as is the rest of his body. Even a frail man like him looks formidable in his ironed three piece suit. When Minato walks, his black loafers make a rhythmic clacking sound. He often has an indifferent or irritated look upon his face.

Triggers:
Look for subtext, motives, or threats in a situation or person.Read a Situation
Research a subject, or study something in great detail.Investigate
Set a deceiving scene, or get rid of evidence.Clean Up
Spot details, objects, or people that are hidden or difficult to make out.Notice

Background: Historian
HistorianMinato is a true lover of Japan. He specializes in the country's modern period, and delves deep to uncover its charms whenever he can. For several years he has been living a nightmare.

After Japan was annexed by Britannia, the empire began a movement to erase the nation's cultural identity. They started with the deep cut of renaming Japan to Area 11. In those troubling times plagued with revisionism and anti-national propaganda, Minato was betrayed by many of his peers. Prominent historians ceased the preservation of established Japanese history and embraced the narrative imposed by the Empire.

Minato was a broken man. He often attempted to hold public lectures about Japan's identity and culture. This would result in him being penalized heavily by officers of the Empire. Over time the public was browbeaten into accepting their new identities as residents of Area 11. Fewer people than ever dared to even inquire about his lectures, let alone attend them. Minato found himself lost in the depths of despair.

Japan was already a memory fading rapidly from the soul of the universe.

Minato was still trying to do his duty as a historian when Zero launched his rebellion against Britannia. While he was no fan of the strange character, he implicitly supported Zero for trying to liberate Japan. A year after the fall of Zero, when Minato heard rumours about the insurgent movement regaining steam, he chose to involve himself with those people. He could speak openly about what Japan truly was as a nation, good or bad. Sure, not all rebels would listen too keenly, but nobody would rebuke him, or hurt him for speaking the truth. But it was not enough to preach to a choir while the world around him shrivelled away. He listened to youths brimming with patriotism suggest the undertaking of more direct action.

Soon enough the strange fire within Minato took the form of volunteering to step into a mech and take on the forces of Britannia head on. This was as close to a samurai as a man in the modern era could get.

Name: Franz Constantine

Allegiance: Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! (Headphone warning for link)

Appearance: Hawk nosed and suspicious-eyed, Franz has dark hair and eyes. His appearance has grown increasingly erratic with age.

Background: Scientist. After years of languishing at a community college, Franz's brilliant - but inconsistent, even erratic - genius was finally noticed by a Britannia recruiter. With the promise of nigh-unlimited funding and plenty of opportunities for field tests, the Lancer Corp was a match made in heaven. While field tests are valuable, Franz had always assumed others would do the piloting - Nightmare frame mechanics are much more a professional fascination. However, only he can control the AI he had developed, so his superiors had essentially forced him into personally leading Nightmare field work. More freedom than tenure, and a lower mortality rate to boot! So far, Franz hasn't had to come face-to-face with the morality of what he's doing. That's about to change with his trip to Area 11: not his first live fire test, but it will be his first time encountering hostiles.

Triggers: Prove them Wrong. +2
Find a Crazy Solution. +2
Discover How Something Works. +2
See Things My Way! +2

Geass power: Know deepest secret (single use).

RP example: "I've figured it out this time, Jenkins! I'm sure of it!"

The display screen looks blankly back at him, a tangle of wires sprouting from unlikely angles. Franz, hair only slightly singed, stretches his arms as wide as they go, comically oversized electrical plugs in each hand. A giggle escapes unbidden as his grip slams together. Plasma lances as sparks ionize the air, tines dangerously close to missing the appropriate holes and landing on Franz's coat sleeves. Again. He was a favorite at the local tailor's (all of them).

Fortunately, the scientist had plenty of experience to learn from. With a thunderclap the circuit closes.

One heartbeat. Three. Ten.

"Oh. I really thought I had it that time..."

"Do not worry, sir. I am sure you will have it in no time!"

Franz literally jumps out of his lab coat (easier than it sounds, those plasma arcs hadn't entirely missed him after all). "Galloping Gargantua! Eureka! It worked!!"

"...sir?" the monitor had come alight with a cool, green glow. A pixelated facsimile of a face furrowed its eight-bit eyebrows in consternation. "Is something wrong?"

A grin stretches across Franz's face, smile-wrinkles creating a lasting pattern in the soot. "Not at all Jenkins! I finally did it - congratulations, you're alive!"

"Alive, sir? I do not understand. Processing... Processing... I appear to be a Servant Fragment, designation J.E.N.K.I.N.S. I do not appear to fit under the definition of alive. And sir...J.E.N.K.I.N.S. does not appear to mean anything..." the artificial voice sounds almost uncertain.

"Curious, curious! You seem to be fretting - I didn't program you to fret! At least, I don't think I did..." Franz paces around the cluttered lab, orating. "And of course your name doesn't stand for anything - it's a name! Now, maybe you're not 'alive' yet persay, but if I have any say over it - and as your creator, I definitely do! Well, it's only a matter of time! Muahahaha!"

Drat, there's that giggle again. Franz rubs his hands, still cackling maniacally. There's work to be done!

Some very interesting applications already, and it hasn't even hit the weekend! I'll sit down for a proper re-read of them all sometime over the next few days and see if anything needs initial feedback.

Wow, a mech game does sound fun! If I wasn't about to start class up again, I'd sign up in a heartbeat.

Best of luck to all those who apply!

Okay, I think Sugi might be done. I would love any advice/critique regarding her Geass though to see if it actually fits the setting. That was by far the hardest part for me, as all the canon ones just kept screaming "this is massive OP bullshrimp" in my head

At first glance this Geass looks too weak, and possibly impossible under the canon rules (I won't spoil it, but suffice to say that a Geass by nature affects other people). Yeah it's something that conceivably is useful in combat, which is good, but the flash weakness combined with having no effect on other people seems like excessive weaknesses.

So if Hotsu doesn't care about Geass affecting others and that the power's core of night vision is fine, I'd consider losing the flash/light weakness while using it, and probably the grey scale unless you just really like that flavor. It's basically able to be completely replicated with technology right now, and I think a Geass should have some edge that makes it stand out.

As I understand, Geass have broken abilities, but have strict limitations. For example, the main character can command a person to do anything, but it only works on a given person once, ever.
Something with a utility or otherwise honest ability, but with no crippling limitation, would probably be at direct odds with the I haven't watched past episode 2, so take this with a crane assault.design philosophy of a Geass.

So, there definitely are 'utility' Geass that are just generally useful, are usable repetitively/constantly, etc... There are also 'basically always useless' Geass that are strong but so situational they're basically useless. Most (all?) of these are revealed in S2. So you're right about the spirit of S1, it's just the expansion of Geass in S2 breaks down that clean original premise. In case you're wondering which ones I'm thinking of:
