The set up is (roughly) that the sister of a Seattle fixer was in Toronto on a school trip. So the fixer reaches out to talent they know and sends them to Toronto to find and fetch the sister. Some conceit can no doubt be found for non-Seattle based runners.

Anyway, at this point in time Detroit is mostly a shot up ruin after Ares vs Bug-hordes vs Ares' out of control super bugs (per Cutting Black). I think Detroit might have had its own black out to, as did parts of Chicago. And of course a lot of talent in the Toronto area would have already been hired for things to do with the blackout, I suspect (which could be part of why newish runners get hired)

Beta has said it well so I won't repeat that bit... except the missing kids are Silk's half sister and her daughter! Oh and a bus full of dancers from Seattle...wouldn't want your lives to be too easy

But what makes you say Scotland doesn't exist?? ...granted it might be a toxic hell hole but still...

Had to look at the book. It would be nice if they'd provided a map, but I guess it's part of the UK. I suppose my character moved to Toronto proper. One contact is a bar owner who gives me tips, or perhaps it's the people who need to be patched up that he gives tips to.

Okay, I'm not finding a good explanation of specialization. I want to maximize Biotech/Medicine. The character is a doctor. I have 32 points to spend on skills, and I can go to 7 in a skill if I take the appropriate positive quality. Or, alternatively, I can boost my related stat. Think I want to go to 7 though. I'm perfectly fine with having a lower Biotech than Medicine, Medicine is the specialization.

It is mostly Toronto proper that is blacked out, but the overall sprawl* is far bigger. It would start a bit to the east in Oshawa, but goes all the way to the west end of the lake at Hamilton (in 2080 possibly reaching out to the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area), wraps around to the south shore of the lake for a ways, then strikes across country to Niagara Falls and Buffalo. Your character could have been working outside of the black out zone at the time. Or could even be from the sprawl but outside Toronto proper. (Just trying to brainstorm ideas for you based on semi-local knowledge, I hope not being too interfering)

*depending on who you listen to, the sprawl might be called "The GTA" (greater Toronto Area), "The Golden Horseshoe" ( for how in pictures from space the whole west end of the Lake Ontario shore is lit up) or "The Oshawa-Buffalo sprawl". Torontonians likely hate that last one since they don't get mentioned)

If it helps anyone, in super rough comparisons to the standard SR Seattle setting:
- Toronto is Seattle. Centre of the sprawl, has rich parts and rough parts. More tall buildings.
- Oshawa (to the east, old automotive factory town) is Auburn
- Hamilton (at the west end of the lake, old steel making town and has a highly polluted port) is Tacoma.
- Mississauga is the big adjacent suburb to the west. I don't actually know the SR fate of it, but if you assume it crashed hard and became some degree of barrens it actually makes 30 Nights make a bit more sense (makes getting out of town harder), so barring word otherwise treat it as Redmond.
- Likewise with Richmond Hill to the north, so perhaps it had an environmental disaster so call it Puyallup
- Oakville (west of Mississauga) is Bellevue
- Brampton is Renton. So is St.Catherines.
- Bufallo is Everett
- Milton is Snohomish, and so is Niagara-on-the-Lake.
- Niagara Falls is something different, a mix of tourism and casinos.
Not that any of that really matters other than for colour -- we should be going into darkest Toronto.

There are a lot of magic types so far on the list but I can accommodate that, play the character you want and we'll make it work ...bear in mind the roads are going to be pretty blocked with stationary vehicles so you might all be better on bikes/foot anyway!

Fair warning, I will be experimenting with the background count (sort of) rules from Slip Streams for the worst parts of the sprawl... I'm not going to be overly heavy handed with it as there's no real mitigation yet until the magic book comes out, but it will add flavour to significant scenes

Huh. Adepts seem...I don't know. 6th edition is confusing me a bit with how magic points for adepts work.

I think I'll just go street sammy, lol...

I was a bit confused in 6e on adept points as well. In character generation it clearly states that mystical adepts need to purchase them but is less clear on adepts. Most magical types are limited in some way by the magic attribute as given in the priority table. But back in the adept section it seems to state that their starting points equal their total magic. I thought about trying to retro-engineer the adept archtype to see if I could figure him out but haven’t gotten around to it.

Hmm, since there was nothing in 6e for me to go by, how do you foresee background count affecting conjuring tests? Need to know how it will affect my spiritual “brothers”.

Double Tap in the Free Seattle campaign is a gunslinger adept. Basically, it’s cheaper to get magic at Priority D and use adjustment points to raise it to 6. That way you get 6 power points. Qi focuses are also relatively cheap in Nuyen for those powers that you don’t need all the time like Astral Perception or Traceless Walk.

I checked that thing about New York, seems like Rochester would actually be closer than Detroit after all. Detroit is about 4 hours away, Rochester seems much closer. Okay, so I've looked at a current map of the area, and I think I'd like to be in Hamilton or Burlington, south of Toronto. Burlington is practically Hamilton. Interesting square neighborhoods, Corktown or Inch Park?

Then I'll stay with Porterhouse.

That doesn't bother Porterhouse that much. He's kind of an anti-magician, I've been playing with the idea for a long time. It is more designed to use its buffs and astral vision to put a bullet between the eyes of an opposing magician. (I know the effective anti-mage is just another mage with spirits, but I think the concept is cooler that). So background count doesn't bother him that much. He would have become an adept if they had counterspelling.

In our time-line they tried putting in high speed ferries between Rochester and downtown Toronto a few years back, but just didn't get enough business to keep them running. No idea what might be in place in the SR timeline @2080, but without a border between them I would expect more integration with the Toronto sprawl in various ways. It might not have a particularly a big shadowrunner community of its own, when you could hire people from Buffalo or Toronto for a job there quite easily. No doubt there is some -- enough for anyone who wants to be from there, for sure -- but specialists tend to congregate into the big cities where there is more market for their services.

Of course some runners would likely have been among the first to get out of the blackout zone. After all, there may be jobs in there, but if nobody can contact you, you can't take those jobs. So I'd imagine quite a few walked/biked/use spirit-movement-boosted-jogging out early on, then sought jobs that would take them right back in. So nothing wrong with a runner just being from Toronto either. They could have been outside when things hit, they could have been in the zone but left, all sorts of explanations.

I don't know much about Burlington. Mostly I hear about people living there and working in Toronto or Hamilton, but a) SR2080 could have Burlington much more developed, and b) there is no reason that a ShadowRunner couldn't live there and do most of their work elsewhere in the sprawl. It is pretty central. If I was making a new character from that area for the game I'd probably set them somewhere like that too. (really tempting to make a character with some local knowledge, but I figure I'll carry on with my current character, because bringing a technomancer into a matrix free zone totally makes good sense )

I know that basically all tech was shutdown in the blackout like a big EMP but new tech coming in isn’t affected. Is it possible to repair/rig the shutdown tech with appropriate checks to get them going again? Like we really need to get out of there and somebody hot wires an abandoned vehicle.
