Menzo: I'll accept anything official and maybe a few things that aren't on a case by case basis as long as your backstory makes it believable for the character being in Tortuga.

(She doesn't speak Goblin, did everything I could think of, but gave up trying to remove it)

Name: Rora Thornshadow
Age: 27
Race/Origin: Pixie / Bermuda
Class: Sorceress

Personality: Rora always tried to look beyond tomorrow and what lay beyond the horizon, not just at what was around her, she like to try and see what tomorrow would bring, could bring, before it arrived. She likes to be prepared and would study all kinds of things even if she didn't know what she would do with the things she learn.

Backstory: Rora often saw ships passing through the Bermuda seas and out of curiosity would visit, and even help them pass through the many islands, letting them know where the veil was thickest so they could avoid most of the crazy stuff that could bleed through from other dimensions. Even as small as she was and able to fly, she learned from their crews how to operate and sail many of the ships that passed through and how to navigate great distances across the high seas.

Bermuda was her home, and always fun and beautiful..., well, until the high sea just kept getting more interesting. All those ships passing through, they came from somewhere, and were going to another, and Rora started to have a longing to see what those places were like. So she joined the next ship passing through and made her way to Tortuga...

RP Sample: Rora had been watching the island of Tortuga come ever closer from the bow sprint for quite some time. She could have flown into port hours ago, but just like watching it come into view. She saw the port authority officer waiting on the dock for them and quickly flew to him, circling his head excitedly has she told him her name and that she had nothing to declare before zooming off to find a new crew to join. Following the posted signs. One 'Captain Black' was looking for 99 men. Rora found the bar and flew in through an open window. Hovering in the center of the room as she looked around, she spotted the man that must be captain Black in a dark corner. She then landed on the table and read the contract. She contemplated the term, and found them agreeable enough, they could have been a little better for sure, but this was no pleasure cruise, there would be work to be done. She told him her eyes were grand and she could man the Crow's Nest, even flying higher to see farther, and/ or help navigate and chart their course as need be. She then signed on the bottom and then went to ordered a little food and drink as she wanted for tomorrow....

"Captain" Ahab
right-aligned image

Name: Captain Herman "Crazy" Ahab
Age: 70
Race/Origin: Dwarf (Hill Dwarf)/ The Sea
Class: Druid
Background: Outlander

Personality: Ahab is crazy. You can't really dress that up, due to years of isolation mixed in with being raised by literal, actual sharks and then topped with a debilitating need for revenge. This isn't to say he's a savage or some unkempt beast that happens to look like a dwarf. He just doesn't have people skills and doesn't really care for the finer parts of civilization, like the use of cutlery, social niceness or the concept of "fair fights". He's got a code, even wild animals like sharks have a sense of honor, but in a fight, it doesn't matter how you win, you just need to win. The pack is what matters at the end of the day, not what society thinks is polite and fair, so long as the pack remains healthy all else can be forgiven. It should be noted that forgiven is not the same as forgotten and Ahab will not forget the wrongs that have been done to him and his pack, no matter the time that's past

Appearance: Four and a half feet and one hundred and fifty pounds of pure dwarf, well almost pure. You minus and arm here and a leg there and you're left with almost five feet and one hundred and twenty pounds of muscle, scar tissue and anger issues. Having lost both and arm and a leg to a sea beast, he's replaced them with cheap prosthetic and just replaced them as they've inevitably been lost

Backstory: Orphaned and abandoned, having been literally thrown off a cliff into the sea. Ahab's childhood, was rough but also, and rather morbidly, lucky. He spent most of it on a make **** raft surrounded by sharks that raised him after being thrown off a cliff into the sea by his parents. He had amassed the raft after luckily surviving the fall and the sharks not instantly killing him. Maybe they had pity, maybe they saw a kindred spirit, maybe some days the universe takes pity on a poor fool. After many years afloat, learning from the sharks and through them learning about the nature of the sea in general. Ahab was once again "lucky." His shark!family were attack by a mass of albino white tentacles from below, the beast broke Ahab raft and killed the entire shiver of sharks and he was afloat for a long while. He was saved by a whaling ship, another "lucky" occurrence. Put to work in the galley to cook for the crew, the ship sailed looking for large game to kill and bring back to port. During this time Ahab grew to appreciate cooking his kills and while he wasn't a gourmet, he wasn't quite the savage, meat tearing brute he was. The sailors called him a "druid" for he kept talking to the prey as they hunted it and had some minor magic that he used to help the crew catch them. It was through this ship that Ahab ended up in Tortuga...

RP Sample: Ahab hauled the recent kill off the dock and into the cart. The meat seller will pay good money for this he thought to himself. As he walked the kill to the butcher he saw he became despondent. This wasn't helping him, he had thought that being on this ship would bring him face to face with the white fiend that attacked The Shiver, but it hadn't. It had been years and he was no close to his prey. "The crew has hunted every known kind of prey or meat in and around this port. Apart from the fact that the meat around here is boring to cook, I can only spice tuna so many times! Where could the white beast be hiding?" Ahab brooded as he walked along. The crew on the ship were fine people, as far as people went, but they didn't understand his need. They just thought him crazy because he said the prey could talk. In fact, they called him crazy for a lot of things, the way he ate meat (althought spiced meat was growing on him), that he could predict the weather, his so-called "magic." "To hell with them, they can call me what they wish. Just because I can use tools they cannot does not make me mad" Ahab fumed internally. He needed a new plan. Coming back from the butchers he saw a grand ship, nothing like his crews dinky little whaling vessel. A huge, three mast wondership that looked like it could hold a hundred or more men, and there were people lining up to join.

Ahab had always been lucky, maybe this was another time. "Prehaps this is how I can avenge the Shiver and finally devour my prey. Served of course with some nice potatoes". He went to the captain of the whaling ship to resign, all the way thinking of ways to cook and serve the great white beast.

Not sure if you'll allow me the missing limbs/limb replacements. Happy to lose them if that's the case

Name: Sarah Starshine
Age: 27 to 29ish
Race/Origin: Half-Elf/Orphan of the High Seas
Class: Rogue
Background: Pirate

Personality: Friendly. It's a word that only the most naďve would use to describe Sarah. It's not to say that she was unnecessarily cruel, but that if she was nice to you, there was some reason for it. And it always for her own benefit, no one else's. The lucky were those who came out of it even. The unlucky found themselves in a holding cell, lightened of their coins, or worse.

So yeah, sure. Sarah Starshine can be friendly. In a cutthroat, she doesn't care anything about you kind of way.

On the other hand, she is dedicated to whatever ship she is a part of the crew of. She works as hard, or harder, than any man, or woman, she has fought beside. And no crewman could honestly say that mistreated them... until they were on opposite sides in battle.

Rumor has it she even killed her own poppa when he betrayed his crew for a Spanish pardon and a bit of land. A pardon that she herself was set to receive alongside him. Slit his throat with his own sword, before the Spaniards could even draw their own. How she got out of that, no one knows.

Appearance:
right-aligned image
Black curly hair falls upon the perpetually pale skin of the woman's shoulders. Her low-cut blouse drawing every man's, and more than a few women's, gaze.

They look up to catch her eye, noticing her unpainted, yet unblemished face, pouty lips smiling at them. Then they finally see her eyes, and for some reason half of them turn away, quickly going back to anything that doesn't involve looking her way again.

Perhaps they can see the darkness that goes beyond her beautiful green eyes. Maybe they see the challenge that they know they can't handle. Whatever it is, few approach her, no matter how drunk and stupid they find themselves to be.

Backstory: Tortuga. How Sarah hated this little island. Unfortunately those who were brave enough or deadly enough to approach her almost all happened to call this little hell-hole home. And now, once again it was to be her home, until she could find a ship to carry her away, perhaps this time she could go someplace less... scummy. Taphus, on the island of St. Thomas always sounded like a nice place to stay. Perhaps she could find a ship to take her there.

Sarah looked back the way she had just came, past the cannon-blasted ship that had barely limped in to port, and out to the sea. Her hard eyes softened as she took in the beautiful greens blending into darkest blues the further out one looked. Who was she kidding? The sea was her home, and no place would feel safer than there.

Rolling her eyes, she turned back to her new temporary home, stopping suddenly as she noted what looked to be another ship beginning to pull into the port. But the sight of it confused her. It looked so huge, compared to how far out it yet was. She shook her head and turned away. Her tired eyes were playing tricks upon her mind.

After a long, nearly sleepless night, Sarah finally made her way down the stairs to the tavern who's room she'd rented for the next few days. She tried not to look toward anyone except the barkeep. "Gimme a bottle of yer best, 'keeper." she said aloud, slapping a single gold coin down. "And don't dare cheat me." she growled, leaning toward the bigger man. She noted with a little glee that he quickly snapped to and retreated in to the back to get her her due.

Taking a breath, the rogue turned around to finally face the dregs of the day. She needed to take stock of who was the most likely to cause her trouble, and maybe she'd notice someone looking for crew. Her eyes immediately fall upon the visage of a man wearing the coat and brim of a Captain. A rather peacocky-captain, in her opinion. But a captain none-the-less. Beggars can't be choosers, and all that. And from the looks of it, he wasn't a beggar.

In just the few minutes she stood there waiting for her bottle, she witnessed four men, and one woman who she thought curiously looked familiar, approach Captain Peacock and sign up. When her due was finally given, she grasped the bottle, and the two silvers change offered to her, and made her way to this strange captain.

"Ninety Nine Souls. The Lagoon of St. Hernandez. A King's Ransom!" she read aloud, then took a quick drink of her rum. She eyed the Captain for a moment, licking her upper lip as she thought about it. "Well Captain, you have one less soul needed then." she reached out, took the offered quill, and signed her life to the ship. "See you in the morning, Captain."

For the rest of the day, she busied herself getting prepared for this next adventure out to sea. Taking what may be her last bath in a long time, eating a good meal. And most importantly, sharpening her blades, as well as checking the powder and cleaning the barrels of her pistols.

RP Sample: The next morning, before the Sun peaked over the horizon to the East, Sarah came down stairs and approached the bar one last time. "Gimme another bottle of what ya gave me yesterday. That was damn fine, I tell yeh." another gold coin slaps down on the table. "Keep the extra." she says with a crooked smile, then waits for the bottle to appear.

As she does so, she looks out at the nearly empty room. Not a chance in hell she would miss this place. She feels the cool glass of her new bottle press into her hand. She takes hold of it, and looks at the label. "La beauté de la terre." she read. Well, except this. This she would definitely miss. She pours the contents of the bottle into a couple small flasks, corks them, then secures them into her bandolier. "Always be prepared." she heard her father's ghost remind her. It was time to head out to her new ship. This early in the morning, she was sure she'd be one of the first to board. Just how she liked it.

Stepping out into the cool air of the Caribbean, she inhaled deeply. She filled her lungs with the mixture of morning dew along with the salty breeze coming in, sending a thrill of energy into her limbs. Slinging her pack over her shoulder, Sarah made her way to the ship. She realized as she went, that this was likely the same ship she day-dreamed the evening before last. It was a lot bigger than she originally thought. But then, it made sense. One hundred pirates was not a small crew.

Taking another swig of her rum, she marched up the gang plank. At the top, a grumpy looking Dwarf (were there any other kind?) eyed her suspiciously. His eyes then fell upon the near empty bottle still in her hand. "What? It's almost done." But he said nothing, just lifted an eyebrow at her, expectantly. Sarah wasn't sure exactly what he wanted of her. Was she supposed to drop the bottle? Hand it over to him? Neither of those choices sound right to her, so she threw her head back, placing the bottle to her lips and drinking the delicious fiery-sweet liquid down. "There. Happy?" she asks, tossing the now empty bottle into the water below. The Dwarf, who she'd later learn was First Mate Sledge, smiled at her and finally let her past.

Taking advantage of her darkvision, the half-Elf made her way below decks to the crew cabins. She then made her way to the rack that was furthest back from the entrance. Most other crew liked to be near the front, figuring they would be the to abandon ship. She always figured she would just kill any who got in her way of leaving, if it came to it. But it also meant that she was less likely to be harassed as she pretended to go into a Trance. Most idiots didn't know the difference between a full-blooded Elf and a half-Elf. Pointy ears equaled Elf. Unless you had a tail and horns. Then you was a Tiefling. She hadn't grown either of those yet, so she was safe from that accusation.

After stowing her gear, then carving her initials above her bunk, Sarah headed back up to see what she could do to get this ship ready to sail. She smiled as she realized it'd taken her longer than she'd thought to choose a rack. But then, that was because nothing but the best would do. Already there were other crewmembers running about, getting the ship ready to sail, the First Mate shouting out orders. Not adverse to hard work, the pirate began checking the rigging. A lot of the younger crew, most of them looked to be unsalted, didn't know how to tie to right knots for the sails. If a sail were to come loose at the wrong time, it could spell disaster for all aboard. Sure enough, more than half them were knotted wrong. It was going to be a long first day.

(
right-aligned image
image) (music)
Name: Sylvia the Wench
Age: 26
Race/Origin: Human from far away
Class: bard
Background: pirate
trait: "I stretch the truth for the sake of a good story."
trait: "To me a tavern brawl is a nice way to get to know a new city."
ideal: "Freedom. The sea is freedom - the freedom to go anywhere and do anything."
bond: "In a harbor town, I have a paramour whose eyes nearly stole me from the sea."
Personality:
An easy girl possessing some otherworldly beauty. She loves commotion and hates boredom. Sometimes she flirts with multiple sailors at the inn just to provoke a fight and then sits back and enjoys the show - even providing some fitting background music with her violin. This behavior of hers is not very popular among men (hence her nickname), nevertheless they just can't help themselves if they see a pretty face!
Appearance:
Sylvia dresses almost like a pirate (or how most people would imagine a female pirate): soft leather boots, naked legs and short skirt or long tight trousers, pretty shirt, a large hat, and long coat. She sometimes wears leather armor if she anticipates a fight. Her pistol is usually tucked into her belt. When dressed for battle a graceful scimitar and a dagger also hang from her weapon-belt. Her battered violin is always within her reach.
Backstory:
There are many gossips about her. Some mysterious and fantastic, others... not so much. She arrived to Tortuga a few months back, and for some time she thought she'd stay forever. But in the end she could not deny the sea's calling and when she saw Captain Black's advertisement (a king's ransom!!!) she took the opportunity.
She's apparently an experienced seafarer and a devilishly virtuoso violin player.
Despite being well versed in various onboard tasks, she prefers to avoid work whenever she can help it. She'd lie, flirt, persuade, wager, use her arcane influence until they all learn that it's better to just leave her to her violin. Though there are tasks that she enjoys and so she'd perform gladly and effectively: such as jobs involving much dexterity but less strength or those that come with prestige.

(Some more details given in secret text)

Scene 1Sylvia stretched her arms with a long yawn before she crawled out from under the warm blanket. The sky was yet black but sheepish chirping of a few birds already foreshadowed the arrival of dawn. Sylvia held a lock of her tangled deep brown hair between her fingers and rolled her eyes. A soft arcane word was spoken as she span around on her toes. Her naked skin briefly glowed up with a faint silvery shimmer, and she was fresh, perfumed and clean. Her dense wavy hair now fell on her shoulders softly, partially covering the elaborate dragon tattoo on her right arm.
- "I could get used to waking up to that sight." - murmured Ben from between the pillows.
- "Huh? I could never get used to your snoring." - answered Sylvia with a smirk.
- "I was hoping that you'd change your mind..."
- "Well, I didn't!" - she lashed out as she was pulling on her trousers. She dressed in a hurry. It was almost dawn. Luckily the inn was not far from the port. She buckled her weapon belt on and then she moved in for a quick kiss.
- "Goodbye, handsome! If this succeeds, I'll be rich!"
- "Well if it doesn't, you'll be dead... The world would be a more depressing place without you."
- "I can take care of myself." - she put her large triangular hat onto her head as if it symbolized her eventual triumph.
She looked back from the doorway. - "Don't be waiting for me. F* everything that moves! For I'll do the same." - she laughed as she shut the door, but her heart was heavy as she walked down the familiar corridor one last time - that had become almost like a home for her. Almost.

RP Sample:
Scene 2The first rays of sunlight had not yet appeared but the sky was slowly getting lighter. It was not displaying the various beautiful colors of blue however but a dull grey curtain of fog. The air was damp with mizzle and the port's vicinity was unusually quiet. As she approached the dock, first distant voices of shouting began to distract the silence then the enormous body of Captain Black's ship faded in from behind the mist.
She arrived at the end of a steadily growing queue of would be sailors. Some carrying large packs others displaying fearsome weapons. She waited for her turn to enter the ship patiently, suppressing a yawn every now and then.

When finally it was her time to climb the plank and step to the deck, she was greeted by a stout dwarf with a scroll in hand.
She uttered her name and when the dwarf found it on the scroll he nodded and Sylvia took her way towards the steerage. She turned back for a moment.
- "When it's time to name the officers, remember my name!" - she told the dwarf with a wink.

Down at the crew's quarters she chose the first free hammock she was able to find closest to the entrance. She would want to listen to the hushed gossips at the corridor, feel the bustle and know who sneaks out at night.

Suddenly she felt the movement under her feet and she knew that the ship was about to depart from the dock. She dropped her stuff by her hammock - except for the violin which she laid in it. Then she rolled up her sleeve. This was not going to be the way she approaches work, but today was special. She needed to give a good impression!
With that she rushed to the deck...

Name: Siobhan O'Shea (pronounced 'Shiv-awn' not 'See-o-ban')
Age: 24
Race/Origin: Human/Ireland
Class: Barbarian
Background: Pirate
  • Trait: "My language is as foul as an otyugh nest."
  • Ideal: "The thing that keeps a ship together is mutual respect between captain and crew. (Good)"
  • Bond: "I'll always remember my first ship."
  • Flaw: "I can't help but pocket loose coins and other trinkets I come across."
Personality: To those who meet her in battle Siobhan O'Shea is a terrifying, mad eyed one-woman army, carving a brutal and bloody path with her cutlasses. Outside of battle she comes across as much more amiable; certainly hard drinking, boisterous and given to salty language but more given to friendly (if often crude) jokes and swapping yarns. She's not particularly intelligent and is all but illiterate but she can be surprisingly cunning.
Appearance: A tall (6') woman with strong but attractive features, dark hair and dark blue eyes. Her skin is naturally fair but years of sailing and not being much for bathing have tanned it. She wears fairly typical pirate clothes - shirt, leggings, boots, bandanna.
Backstory: Siobhan's family were Irish rebels against the English government and like most rebels they ended up on the gallows for it. Siobhan was a mere slip of a girl of the time and far too young to fight so she was overlooked when her father and older brothers were captured by the English soldiers. Thanks to a sympathetic neighbour (who figured the fiery girl would only get herself killed if she stayed in Ireland) she found a berth aboard the Fortune a ship, bound for the West Indies as a cabin boy. That was ten years ago and Siobhan has had a lively life since, having quickly fallen in with a rough crowd and in love with the seafaring life. Over the years she's learned to pour her anger into battle (mostly - you do not want to be caught trying to cheat at cards with this woman as Hook Handed Henry found to his cost) and her toughness and loyalty to her shipmates has won her several friends among the buccaneers.

Siobhan does not like the English government or the East India Company (which she tends to see as the same thing) but she has met enough good 'Sasanach' seaman to give them little trouble beyond some friendly ribbing.

RP Sample:

Siobhan greeted the new day with a hangover, the victory prize of a drinking contest at Old Meg's the night before. For anyone else that wouldn't have been a great start but the tall Irishwoman was blessed with an iron constitution and a thick skull and walked off the worst of it on the stroll to the ship. As she reached the docks Siobhan paused, her boots scuffing the rough cobbles around the dock. She walked around a little to get a better view of the ship and found herself whistling in appreciation.

Feck, look at her! I hope she fights as pretty as she looks! Siobhan thought. Course, she's only as strong as her cap'n and crew.

The pirate lass nodded decisively to herself and strode towards the gangplank. She could already smell the salt of sea breeze and the call of the waves and with them plunder and adventure!
