Cypher and The Strange - Humble Bundle

Edit - This bundle is now over.

For those interested, there is a Monte Cook Games Humble Bundle running for Cypher and The Strange. Thought I would share it for those interested, as I just got an email from MCG and there is only 1 day, 21 hours, and change remaining for the bundle as of the time of this post.

Travel to vast realms for adventure or riches, or to save the Earth from the many dangers now leaking into our world with The Strange Corebook. Or use the Cypher System Rulebook with your imagination and start a new campaign in a fantasy land, a science fiction setting spanning the galaxy, or a modern slasher horror game.
If you're interested in picking up the the rulebooks for Cypher or The Strange it's a good deal and comes with setting books for Predation (Time Travel and Dinosaurs), Unmasked ('80s Superheroes), The Stars Are Fire (Space Opera), Gods of the Fall (Fantasy), as well as adventures and other books. I've had my eye on the Cypher System Rulebook for awhile so I picked it up mostly for that since the entire bundle is cheaper than getting that book by itself elsewhere, but there is a lot of interesting looking stuff in there that I'd never even heard of.

I've been contemplating whether or not to use Cypher. Still, the intrusions/XP economy looks like it could get out of hand, and expending XP, i.e., things that you can spend on permanent things, for transitory things bugs me, and tends to slow play to a halt, in my experience.

When the system depends on such a mechanic, the game can stagnate.

To be clear, this is all second-hand as far as it concerns Cypher.

My other misgiving is that it's yet another flash-in-the-pan that doesn't have a stable or enduring player-base.

The best system ever is irrelevant if no one uses it.

Sounds interesting, never tried Cypher. Might have to look into it thanks.

Just my two cents here: Having played Numenera (the Cypher flagship in my opinion, one of the earliest settings) I find that the intrusions getting out of hand is part of the beauty of it. It can become a thrilling hot mess, and if it partially derails a scene so be it. For accepting you do get your xp after all, and sometimes you can hold on to that point even throughout the drastically complicated scene, and sometimes you can't.

The Xp flows relatively freely in the game as far as I have experienced it (pun intended). Remember that you do not gain XP in the game by beating enemies or solving quests (though you will still usually do both), you get them for the act of discovering something new about the world. It's nice to also beat the enemies or solve whatever situation you were in - but if you survive the Xp will flow. On top of that in Numenera there are huge amount of things to discover plotwise, lorewise etc every step of the way, so just being generally inquisitive and adventurous will net you a few points every session, and more often than not you'll be saving one or two as well. You only need four to raise something.

I suppose that was the worry with the game stagnating? Not being able to improve the character often enough? Because plotwise the intrusions make for quite the opposite of a stagnating game.

EDIT: Isn't there also the possibility of changing character type when stepping between worlds in the Strange? So that would also completely switch things up laterally to keep things interesting even when you are not raising stuff with Xp.

Also you have to remember that part of what your character can do is inherently tansitory - using cyphers. A lot of them will come and go, giving them all kinds of one use abilities to unleash.

I've yet to have a boring numenera game, let's put it like that, though maybe I am blessed with the right kind of co-players and Gm.

It's not really picked up on site, but I suppose the pace is less pbp friendly. That's neither here nor there, but I think in the wider world it's reasonably popular as a system.
