War for Cambrian Sector (WH 40K, Battlefleet Gothic)

Game NameWar for Cambrian Sector (WH 40K, Battlefleet Gothic)
Game SystemOther Roleplaying Games
ThemeDesperate War and Cutthroat Politics in the Darkness of the 41st Millennium
FlavourCommand ships, sway men, rule worlds, avoid the machinations of others
Plot SummaryEach player will assume the role of a powerful man or woman of the Cambrian Sector. Based on their position and standing, they will be given command of vast warships, legions of army forces, and worlds with population to recruit from and industrial capacity to repair, maintain and construct ships.

The game will be as rules light as possible. With the goal of making this game as easy and quick to play as possible. Hopefully it won't take as much time for folks to be part of it, letting this game be more of a smaller side game for everyone to enjoy

A classless DnD 5th lite system will be used for characters (mostly only for diplomacy skills and attributes). Every player will have the dedicated support and backing of one group of people in the sector, maybe civilians, ship crew, or army forces. Every other group will be up for grabs, their allegiance to each player will change based on diplomacy skills and actions in their favour.

Ship combat will be simplified and based on Battlefleet Gothic, no previous knowledge of this system will be needed. No detailed previous knowledge of 40k is required either. Even if you have almost no idea about the fiction of the world, I will be able to direct you to one or two short youtube videos that will explain the concepts your character will need to be aware of, as a mini primer.

Fleet commanders and captains will focus mostly on controlling ships to fight and win battles, fighting off the attackers and hopefully not taking much damage. Planet commanders will be more focused on supplying repairs and new ships, though will also have command of some forces of their own. Finally, there are some support characters, who will have control over some other element of the sector's forces.

The game will open confronting the Imperial forces with some small threats, looking to raid and attack. The enemy forces will be given a change to grow, and eventually there will be a huge hostile force that will threaten to wipe out the whole sector.

Finally, I will be looking to select one or two characters who will start the game corrupted with chaos, secretly working against the loyal forces, trying to corrupt others to join them. Plus, some of the player characters might have ancient grudges or vendettas they want to avenge. Each character can come up with their own goals and aspirations.

Specific Details of the Setting and Possible Character Positions Follows. Don't feel a need to read all of this, just what you're interested in. Additionally, details could be changed or added if you have other character ideas. Skip down to the end of the post to see application details.

Player Application.

Desired Rank/Position: (May list multiple choices, let me know what you'd be willing and interested to play)
Name: First and Last
Description: One or Two Short Paragraphs
Knowledge of 40k: (none, some, one specific faction, or all seeing)
Knowledge of Battlefleet Gothic: (battlewhat whonow? the ships look cool, memorized the books)
All levels of knowledge welcome and this is just to give me a heads up as to who needs what explained to them.

The following in secret tag to me
Corruption: (May list multiple possible choices, from Incorruptible to Loyal to Tempted to Traitorous to Corrupted)
Duty: (Who does your character serve, again may list choices, examples, Own Interests, The Emperor, Mankind, Citizens, Own Subjects/Crew.)
Interests: (What motivates your character, multiple choices, examples, Service, Loyalty, Duty, Honour, Self-Serving, Greed, Vendetta, Obsession, Knowledge, Power.)

Mostly just interested to see how many folks are interested in this. I'm thinking an ideal number of players would be as high as fifteen or so.

Additionally, if people disappear without letting me know about an absence, their character could go missing or get lost. They will be replaced quickly as I can find replacements, in order to keep the game moving. If the player returns, their character can return, but may find themselves demoted. Or might be asked to play a new character in a new position.

Sounds interesting! A few questions for you:

-What kind of post rate were you looking for?
-What's the minimum you'd want to play with? 15 feels a tad ambitious!
-Could people play multiple roles should the wish? Or is the multiple choice submission just to avoid overlap?
-Is this before or after Cadia fell? A giant warp scar splitting the universe in two and the Primearchs reborn would have an impact on the few roles in the know!
-Any chance of an Adeptus Astartes presence in the area? A company? A battle barge? A single Marine? Etc?

I'll make sure to pass this around my 40k circles too. Never enough meat for The Emperor's grinders!

Ah good questions.

Post rate I can be flexible depending on what everyone feels like. I was hoping to get the game into a flow where during battle we can have pretty simple rapid posts, ideally once a day. Longer diplomacy and talking posts will be spaced out and can be closer to one or two a week.

Minimum players could be around eight. Fifteen is a lot, but I think this game will be laid out should make it easier to manage.

Ideally, I'd like to avoid multiple roles. Not sure if that would work for what I'm planning. But I can think over it.

This will be set before the fall of cadia.

I wouldn't be opposed to an Astartes force moving through. But the sector is small and out of the way. They'd only be stopping through on their way to somewhere else when all this starts.

Thanks a bunch! I'll need some people in order to run this.

Sounds like a job for the Adeptas Sororitas and the Sisters Repentia.

I must confess I don't know a whole lot about those folks. But I wouldn't be opposed. Sororitas are under the Ecclesiarchy right?

Because it will probably come up. Let's officially say the Cambrian Sector is in Segmentum Pacificus. Because it doesn't get enough love. Specifically it will be in the northern end of the segmentum so bordering on Obscuras and Solar. I'd have to double check which Space Marine Chapters are out there. Space Wolves and Imperial Fists could be around, on route to or from their homeworlds. I also wouldn't be opposed to a Rouge trader passing through.

Anyone part of a group passing through, don't worry, there will be ample reason for them to stay once the game proper gets started.

Yes, they are the warriors of the Adeptus Ministorum - the Ecclesiarchy. They are the righteous fury of the Emperor made flesh.

When the High Lords of Terra issued the Decree Passive, they forbade the Adeptus Ministorum from controlling ‘men under arms’. Thus the renamed Adepta Sororitas, became true defenders of the faith and a very physical reminder of the power of the Ecclesiarchy.

The Sisters of Battle are called upon to escort hierarchs through hostile war zones, eliminate heretical leaders, and launch surgical strikes to recover long-lost relics and artefacts from enemy hands.

"By bolter shell, flamer burst and melta blast, the mutant, the heretic and the traitor alike are cleansed of their sin of existence. So has it been for five millennia, so shall it be unto the end of time."

I, uhh, I really like the Sisters of Battle.

Always loved me some sisters of battle fiction. Just finished reading a book that had a group of elite sisters guarding the tomb of a long dead saint as a Khornite Fleet closed in on the funeral world. It was pretty bad ass!

It also looks like the net I cast here on the site hasn't caught much, so I've cast it wider to a few pbp Facebook groups and I'll hit the 40k ones tonight or tomorrow once I have a good hook. Haha, I hope you'll be happy with a gaggle of newbies should I be able to tempt them here!

As for me, I don't know if I can afford to pass up the chance to have my very own Titan! I'll have to let it stew a little longer and see what develops!

So yes Sisters of Battle are certainly welcome. I'll need to check up on what an appropriate rank and title for their leader would be. Again I'd lean on them being on their way passing through the sector. This sector isn't important enough to have Sisters of Battle or Space Marines based or assigned permanently to it.

Yeh no problem. I welcome newbies. And as I said this game will be rules light. So anyone with a vague understanding of 40k or at least willing to learn a bit is welcome. And as pointed out, this is a bit of a niche game idea and it requires a lot of players, so thanks a bunch for expanding the net.

I'm planning on just leaving this game open until (and if) it gathers enough interest to get started. So I'm hoping enough interest trickles in after a while to give it a shot.

Sounds like an interesting idea, and I do love me some Adeptus Mechanicus!

Desired Rank/Position: High Fabricator of Nitimin

Name: Varignatus Erg

Description: As a senior tech-priest, there are only the smallest bits of flesh remaining on High Fabricator Varignatus; he has abandoned most of his body for the superiority of the machine. Under his capacious red robes, his form is mostly hidden, although he seems to have replaced his legs with a quartet of variable-geometry ambulators, while most of his interactions with the world are done through the array of mechadendrites that sprout from his back, rather than whatever form his arms may have taken on. Within the darkness of his hood, multiple sensors are visible, and his voice issues from a vox-grill hidden somewhere in that expanse. Truly, his form is an inspiration to those of the Cult of Mars fortunate enough to perceive it.

One unusual bit of seeming ornamentation is the long chain that loops around his neck and shoulders, bearing the weight of many large and ornate keys inlaid with circuits, data-crystals, and precious metals; these keys are more than simple baubles, but bear within them the necessary access codes and interfaces to reactivate the quiescent industrial complexes of Nitimin – when conditions permit such to occur.

Knowledge of Battlefleet Gothic: I'm familiar with the broad strokes of it; I owned but never played the tabletop version, but I did play the PC version.

Knowledge of the 40k Universe: Pretty solid; I have a few inklings of the new stuff, but I'm much more comfortable with the old.

Imperial Guard

High Marshall General

Name: George Erwin Bradley Wittmann

GEN Wittmann is the decedent of tank commanders reaching well past the murky pre-history of the imperium. While some scions of this illustrious line failed to win, not one failed to do his duty both to humanity and the God-Emperor. Tactically he prefers striking with his commando units to disable enemy C3I nodes followed by overwhelming armored strikes.

GEN Wittmann stands 5'4'' short but after that many generations in tanks, humanity adapts. Steel grey hair cut into a buzz cut tops piercing blue eyes. Thin and angular he looks like a SABOT round in flight.

He wears anarcho-tech powered armor, dark blue almost black with gold trim. On his right hip rides an ivory handled bolt-revolver. On the left a power sword.

What's your knowledge of Battlefleet Gothic? I have never played the game. I have been reading up on it a bit online
What's your knowledge of the 40k Universe? I am strong on fluff and weak on crunch. I read the books and wiki but don't play the game.

The natural leader for the Sisters of Battle is a Canoness, who is only outranked by the Prioress.

Unless you would be more comfortable with an Inquisitor aligned with the sisters.

In either case, Fire.

Lord99 and RetiredTownGuard, looks great. A few more like these and we can get started.

wodine, again I'll have to read up. But I'm currently out of town on a phone and the worst internet this side of the warp storm, but I'll check into it this weekend.

So Cannoness or Prioress, which would you expect is the equivalent of say the leader of an Ultramarines Legion? Is the Prioress the Chapter Master? If so then I'd agree Confessor would be the way to go. One step below the chapter master is about what I'm aiming for with this. Think Sisters of Battle would make use of Space Marine style warships?

Also, very important everyone. There's two questions I just realized I really should have included. So 99 and RTG if you can add these to your aps that would be great.

What's your knowledge of Battlefleet Gothic.
What's your knowledge of the 40k Universe.

Anything is fine of course from know absolutely nothing to know some of the ships or dudes to live and breathe the lore.

The Prioress would be the Chapter Master and the Canoness would be like a Captain - they're the ones who lead the ground forces; a Prioress almost never actually goes to battle. The only thing that would have a higher authority would be if they had a living saint, like Saint Celestine.

While the sisters are on par with Space Marine technology (ceremite power armor, meltas, heavy flamers, bolters, heavy bolters, rhinos, exorcists etc...) they are part of the Ecclisarchy and would probably have the best ships available to the Imperial Navy.
