Izzy nodded, going along with Norris's train of thought.

"He's large...powerful. Could be on drugs. Meth, or PCP. Bath salts. She paused. "Although if he's that big and maybe on drugs, it seems unlikely that no one else saw some hulked-out, homicidal football player running around the national park. And on three separate occasions? Maybe..."

She stopped, then shook her head as if to clear it.

"No. This is crazy. I mean, you're the experienced one, but are you sure we're not barking up the wrong tree, here? It makes much more sense that he just managed to take them by surprise, or that he had a gun or something else that prevented them from fighting back."

Norris nodded. "You're not wrong. Just keep an open mind when we get here. It's one thing to acknowledge statistical probabilities and another to rely on them. This isn't going to be a walk in the park, no pun intended.

Seems the AD has a little faith in you, Lowell. Let's see how things shake out."

The rest of the drive was almost in silence. Country music drawled on at a low volume almost overpowered by the sound of the AC and the tires hitting the damp asphalt of the highway. It was hard not to doze off.

And doze off she did.

The deceleration and parking of the car woke Izzy from her troubled sleep. Norris gave her a look that wasn't exactly condescending before grabbing his sacked lunch and getting out of the car.

They were parked in front of a Park Ranger's office with lush Oregon forest all around. The parking lot held a ranger jeep and no one else. It seems they had arrived.

The park was beautiful. The muggy August afternoon she stepped out into made Izzy miss the air conditioned car almost immediately, but there was no denying the verdant beauty of it. As she looked around her, it was hard for Izzy to imagine this place as the scene of seven grisly murders.

...Bear attacks, maybe. But not murders.

Izzy reached back into the car, grabbing her own lunch before turning to Norris. They hadn't discussed much else on the ride - she tried to push the absolute mortification of having fallen asleep in the car out of her mind, knowing that mentioning it would only bring further humiliation - but she assumed the senior agent had a plan. He looked like the type to have a plan.

"Are they expecting us?"

Norris nodded before moving over to a picnic table and sitting down. Who would want to eat out here when the air-conditioned car was only a few steps away?

"Expecting us, but not for another couple of days."

Norris unrolled the sack and looked Izzy over.

"Why don't you go in there and start asking some questions. I'm going to eat my lunch. When you feel like you've pumped them dry, we'll go take a walk."

His mouth was already biting in to a sandwich, Izzy and her lunch, apparently, forgotten.
