So the conflict arrives at level 6, (assuming level 6 is attained) when both the Arcane Duelist's Blade thirst, and the Sound Striker's Weird Words both replace Suggestion.

I would suggest maybe moving Weird words down to level 18, and just leaving Mass Bladethirst off the list entirely.

I know we're very unlikely to get to level 18, and level 3's Wordstrike isn't even that good, but I like the idea of a bard who can hurt things/people just by shouting at them.

As we continue this application phase, just wanted to roll-up those that applied or returned so far, as well as be up front with my selection thought process.

1. Character Concept/App. The first and foremost criteria will be the strength of your character concept. This is evaluated on narrative consistency of your core character concepts and secondly on how well your character narrative fits in with the setting of the Forsaken Plane. Meaning while the planes look for flawed individuals, they do not look for those beyond redemption, well at least not players. Quantity does not equal quality, and in fact too much could actually be detrimental as it could obscure or detract.

2. Interactive Phase. Once you complete application and I get sense of your character narrative, then access to the interactive thread will be provided. This give me sense of which players and/or characters dynamics mesh well as well as give an example of your gameplay in real time.

Without further adieu...

The applicants (in no particular order)
  • Dbaque returning as Doctor Aurelius Alymer elven alchemist and man of science accompanied by his faithful assistant Yana who is definitely NOT made from the parts of his deceased wife.
  • Humble Athena as Raphael a Human Bard from Faerun, maker of no plans, and a former amphibian ninja with sonic vocals.
  • ShadowCatX as Rave Krayci, azure eyed and guilt ridden Aasimar with daddy issues and a mostly-dead mother that has him coming and going between life and death.
  • triedtherest as Doctor Archibold "Archie" Reynolds, a human rogue from Korsova with penchant for the science, occult, and things best left alone... also with serious daddy issues but with an all-dead mother.
  • rhaiber returning as the bubbly and goodly human Synthesist Princess Luminara Starshimmer with a suit of Magic Girl shine that is as colorful as her name... almost. She is accompanied by her demonic AI, Nyxx.
  • OneDarkness returning as ...someone...maybe? And probably dressed in black.
  • WhiteStag returning as a native Aasimar Bloodrager with anger management issues and a penchant for growing fangs and scales Jonathan Rawncer.

I am the Eyes and Ears of Good. I will never falter when called upon to act in the service of those on the side of Good.

I do not kill without cause. It is my job to make the battles easier for those on the battlefield, not to act as Judge. The Wicked will answer for their crimes in battle or defeat.

I leave no trace of my passage through enemy held lands. Being caught is one thing, leaving a trail back to my allies is worse.

If I must fight, I will end the fight quickly and cleanly. My purpose lies not in the blade, and time away from my purpose may cost lives.

The Plane of Shadow is a place that holds Evil, but it is not Evil unto itself. I will learn to see the difference, and will teach that difference to others.

Physical Description: Irem is a fit young woman of Keleshite decent. Her skin is burnished by the Qadiran sun, though most of it hidden underneath the traditional veils and head coverings typical of the desert. The spy's face however is visible, and it shows a deep and contemplative wisdom. Irem's thick brows are often furrowing above her bronze-colored eyes, whose gaze seem to pierce the very fiber of your being. For attire, she dresses in blacks or dark blue, and she is lightly armored in a set of armor of metal plates sewn into her garments. About her waist is a military style belt, and hung off the side is a finely made short sword. She carries various other things, but all in all travels lightly so as not to interfere with stealthier movements.

Personality: Irem's demeanor is of cool collected calm. She makes it a point to sit back and fully understand the situation, where people are coming from, before she speaks up. When she does speak, she does so with a soft empathetic voice and a charming smile. It's all mostly an act, however. Personally, she doesn't feel like she has very much charisma, but she's learned by observing people and their speech patterns, how to more easily interact with people in a positive way. Her expert body-language reading skills also makes her an excellent liar, or more importantly, able to notice when someone else is being less than truthful.

In times of conflict and battle, Irem fights with cold efficiency just as She of Ebony Wings instructs. She takes in all the vital information she can such as weaknesses and fighting habits in a near instant, then coldly applies that to thrust her short swords in the exact right place to end it quickly.

Ultimately, her goal is to move forward the goals of the Good. This might require some underhanded behavior, and she means to be the one to do it.

What aspect of your character attracted the attention of the Dark Powers to your character?: Irem so boldly acts in the darkness, all in the course and aims of upholding Good. Though, in her pursuit of justice and righteousness, she has occasionally stepped off into darker thoughts. Stealth and intrigue are tools which can be used for Good just as easily as they can be for Evil. For example, it would be so simple to simply sneak into a cruel nobleman's home and slit his throat. Then he would no longer be able to suppress his people. At what cost? Becoming a murderer? As of now, Irem has stayed on the righteous side of the darkness, but it might take a few pushes by a desperate spirit to tip her over the edge.

Background:
Step 1:
Irem and her mother Uzan were sold into slavery when she was rather young. There wasn't much she remembered before being enslaved, but during the life of a slave there aren't many things you wish to remember. Their master was a wickedly cruel man, a merchant, who traveled with his multitudes of slaves and workers across the Inner Seas. Beatings, degrading work, and wandering hands plagued the two of them until a mysterious man in a black keffiyeh and robes purchased Irem and her mother.

The mysterious man was a follower of a lesser known Empyreal Lord called Kelinahat, or She of the Ebon Wings, as the mystery man called her. He explained that he purchased their freedom, and said they were free to go, but to consider his offer before going. Allow him to train them to walk in the shadows, to watch over the Good people of the Katheer, and to help bring more of our enslaved brothers and sisters out of bondage. Irem and her mother Uzan considered leaving with the gold he offered if they refused, but instead they stayed with the man who then introduced himself as Jameel al-Yassin.

Jameel taught the two of them many things that have proven to be very useful. How to walk without making noise, and how to stay unseen once you've hidden yourself. They were also taught the ways of listening and remembering key things about people. During their training they'd spend hours at a time, in busy market places tailing a person that Jameel pointed out, simply to understand as much as they could about them. Then he would test them. Every single detail mattered, and if you slipped up it could mean life or death in a 'real' situation. Irem got very good at this.

Then came the martial aspect of their training. Jameel gave them both a short sword and told them that these blades meant a grave thing. To kill a person is to know them in their most intimate and dire moment. That before you draw your blade, you must know it's for the greater cause of Good that you end a life. With that message deeply ingrained in her heart, Irem took to the sword training with a resolved reverence. She did not look forward to ever having to use her blade, but should the need arise she knows with confidence she'll be the one who wins.

Their last lesson was on the nature of Shadows. Jameel explained that Kelinahat, and her followers use the Shadows for the cause of Good, but there was an inherent risk. The Plane of Shadow is a place that holds Evil, but it is not Evil unto itself. Likewise, they must also walk in Shadows, but be aware not to lose themselves in them. Jameel locked the two of them in a dark basement, devoid of light to meditate on the nature of the dark, and hope that Kelinahat would reveal things to them. Irem found it easy to meditate, able to clear her mind. Uzan, her mother, was not so capable of clearing her mind, as flashes of her life in slavery often troubled her. It was not just the two women in the dark basement however... an unseen Demon lied in wait.

Uzan's troubled mind meant that she was prime real estate for the Invidiak that lurked in the darkness. Thoughts of envy directed towards the young girls from her childhood that did not have to live in bondage as she did. The more she tried to meditate, the more she spiraled in her feelings until... the Demon struck. It wasn't until the sound of sudden shrieking from the opposite side of the basement, that Irem realized something was wrong. Then when her mother was on top of her, trying to kill her, nothing in her eyes, that she knew she had to stop it. Upstairs, Jameel struggled to get the locks undone, but Irem already spoke.

"Take me, instead of my mother."

Jameel then burst down the stairs and blasted the room with a Daylight spell, driving out the Invidiak from Irem's body. The expert Inquisitor then set to killing the weakened Demon, sending it back to the Abyss. Or so he thought. In the aftermath, and in the light, there was Uzan lying motionless. Dead. Her body simply couldn't take the full brunt of demonic possession. Likewise, Jameel noticed that while the Demon was slain, a portion of it had remained. In the flickering light of the Daylight spell, Jameel saw a monstrous shadow being cast from Irem.

The hurt of her Mother still dying, despite her efforts, laid heavy on Irem's heart. Jameel however directed her anguish and hurt on their mission. Gather intel on wicked men in Katheel, and see them brought to justice.

Step 2:
Character Goal: Free as many people from the cruel chains of slavery, and to brings those responsible to justice.

Player Goal: I think it'll be a fun challenge to play a Lawful Good character who relies so much on the typically "evil" or at least non-lawful side of these skills. Plus, I've always wanted to see how the Shadowdancer Prestige class plays, so here's hoping!


Step 3:
#1: (Known) Irem hides the fact, to the best of her ability, that she's still possessed by a Shadow Demon. It is only a partial fragment of his soul attached to her, which manifests itself as her own shadow, but twisted in monstrous ways at times. The perceptive ones around would note that sometimes that Shadow simply leaves, and Irem casts none at all.

#2: (Unknown) Jameel al-Yassin was the one who summoned the Shadow Demon as a trial, to see if the two women were prepared. He never intended to let it go so far as to having one of them die. He feels terrible, and he fears what Irem will do if she finds out.


Step 4:
#1: (Friend?/Foe) Jameel al-Yassin. The man who liberated Irem and her Mother, trained them, and ultimately caused the death of her mother. Still he cares deeply for Irem, and does his best to mentor her. Dedicated to Kelinahat, he still struggles with the darkness himself. No one's perfectly pure.

#2: (Friend) Nazila Batgui. Nazila is a merchant ship captain who is a contact and friend of Irem's and offers the liberated slaves that her and Jameel rescue passage away from Qadira. Chaotic and glib, she often gives the two Inquisitors a hard time just for the sake of it. Jameel doesn't find it funny, saying that their work is no laughing matter.

#3: (Foe) Zaethzoltereik. The Invidiak that was summoned, and then possessed Uzan, then Irem, before finally being sent back to the Abyss. Before he left, he made a desperate plea to a Demon Lord to allow him subtle control over his lingering shadow on Irem. It was granted, and it allows him a chance now and again to see into her life, but not interact. Zaethzoltereik's been watching, waiting, for his chance to find Irem and fulfill the promise of "Take me, instead of my mother."


Step 5:
#1: Irem constantly is staring at people, without really realizing it. She can't help it, as even when she had breaks from her training with Jameel, she made a game of analyzing people with herself.

#2: Irem never removes her head scarf around other people. Her brown hair is long, silky, and beautiful, but she keeps that as a secret that only she gets to know.

#3: Irem eats vegetarian if she can help it. It goes along with her views on killing, as if it isn't advancing the cause of Good, best if we limit our death-toll.

I did end up changing Rave's build since there was already an Aasimar with rage in the party. I think a tiefling will fit better with his daddy issues anyways. He remains mostly who he was though.

Sounds good. The core character concepts seem to be same, so no worries. The game mechanics are like the packaging for a product. It can change as long as the product inside remains the same! Thanks for your work!

Appearance and Personality
Jenny comes across as plain and remarkable as one can with dirt and soot often visible on her clothes and skin, she small almost childlike being a couple inches under five feet and thin like one who eats but barely. Her clothes are too big her but have been awkwardly sewed and buckled so that they don't fall off. She doesn't carry much in the way of belongings besides a well worn pack, and looks every bit the street urchin she truly is. There are no signs of wealth, her only bit of accessory is a braided leather bracelet and a simple leather tong with a rough carved wood pendant with the letter J on it. She has had a hard life and she has the scars, bruises and burn marks to back that up, she reflexively moves away from others unless she has a need to be close.

Jenny's few years have all been focused on survival an almost nothing more, her only good years that can she remember were when she was was living with the seamstress of took her in when her mother died, those four short years and the meager life that she had there was as good as it got for her. She has watched friends die of disease and starvation, had to kill to stop from being taken or killed herself, and barely has any idea what safety, love or trust really means as it all might as well be fantasy for her. She has had a few friends that you might consider close, ones that might actually look for her if she vanished but they are few and far between, so she will have a hard time understanding kindness as usually that would mean somebody wants something from her.


Place of Origin
Jenny grew up along the shores of Westgate, and where she has lived most of her life other than her forays into the markets or trade hubs of the city to ply her trade, no real place was home and she carried most of what she had on her and often slept where ever she could find relative safety for the night.

  • triedtherest as Doctor Archibold "Archie" Reynolds, a human rogue from Korsova with penchant for the science, occult, and things best left alone... also with serious daddy issues but with an all-dead mother.
  • rhaiber returning as the bubbly and goodly human Synthesist Princess Luminara Starshimmer with a suit of Magic Girl shine that is as colorful as her name... almost. She is accompanied by her demonic AI, Nyxx.
  • OneDarkness returning as Jenny a human rogue from the shores of Westgate who has had a hard knocks life, a pile of trust issues, and no rich nobleman to adopt her for a happily ever after.
  • WhiteStag returning as a native Aasimar Bloodrager with anger management issues and a penchant for growing fangs and scales Jonathan Rawncer.
  • OsmundCinderholt as Irem al-Uzan, Keleshite Human Inquisitor of She of the Ebon Wings and Master of Espionage with a willful shadow that seems to have a mind of its own.


Interactive Phase is up and running! All cast members in the list above can proceed to the interactive phase - prologue. Do not pass Go and do not collect $200!

For those cast members already there, you guys are really getting after it! It has given me as good, if not better sensing for your character and your character's voice, than your apps ever could. Well done!

Speaking of which, as much as I would like to update, I am going to hold off for another day or so to permit more of the cast to get their posts into the thread, but please feel free to continue the storming and forming!

For those yet to join the fray, please take a time to read the works already posted to get a sensing of what and how to post. I only wished that the site let me give out more RPXP on daily basis!

Finally, I encourage you all to recognize the excellent work being done by your fellow players with RPXP, not just for this phase, but throughout your time on site. Thanks for all of the wonderful work and investment by all cast members... you have already made this a very special experience!
