The one that immediatly sprung to mind for me is Kazuma Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho.

Starts off as rival to the main pc but becomes the heart of the group. I always liked his arc.

He starts off as just having a "sixth sense" that develops in a psychic flaming sword in his first fight with a supernatural being (plus other other applications in typical anime shenanigans), he's never overly strong, barely reaching the rest of the party at his strongest, but what started as being "a street-punk attitude" is what motivates the group in their darkest moments.

Edit: about me, I discovered dnd5th and PbP on Discord, I played some "minor" systems as well, but wanted to try something new, and here I am.
