You have dragon blood, that's what makes you dragonborn. When you pick subrace there's a damage type. Ignore that. The damage type is fire. The PHB says what to do with this damage type

Still that does not quite answer my initial question.

I plan to take the Half-Elf race and the Sorcerer-Dragonic Bloodline -- as such what I am asking is this.

If I take the Half-Elf racial characteristics would you be okay with me instead of looking like a half-elf looking like a Dragonborn. Mechanically he would not be a Dragonborn as he would just look like one -- I ask this because it would seem more fitting for the theme -- or I can have him start looking sort-of like a cross between a half-elf and a dragonborn and eventually look more and more like a dragonborn if you feel that sounds better.

1) Human with Dragonborn veneer from get go
2) Human with some Dragonborn elements but looking mostly human and then as he progesses he appears more and more dragonborn

As for the fire thing -- sounds good perhaps the other types of dragons just lived too far from Greece to be viable for that region

Also would you mind me playing with the Aesthetics for the Fire Bolt Cantrip and make it appear like he spits a mini-fireball (he would still need a hand free for the somatic component (which is him touching his jaw) and the verbal component (is him spitting the mini-fireball) the functionality of the spell does not change in any way -- again just an aesthetic adjustment.

By the way do you want me to start as a rogue then multi-class into Sorcerer ?? Basically delaying the "Dragonization" aspect by 1 level otherwise at first level he will have scales

2 other Questions because I have run into it being down different ways by different GMs

1) Arcane Focus Quarter Staff can it be used like a normal quarterstaff just costing 5gp instead of 2sp due it being a much higher quality quarter staff??
2) At 1st Level a Sorcerer gets 2 spells -- is he considered having the materials components or foci he needs to cast the 2 spells he has at least once (example Find Familiar)

Last if I take the Hermit Background would you be willing to work together on what the discovery had been -- or would you be willing to design that discovery to help with the adventure in some way??

Personally, unless you mean to stay as a rougue I find that there's hardly any point to taking rougue at 1st. You should take sorcerer. You can kinda evolve

Okay perhaps there is a bit of confusion in how I stated the question -- for instance the Find Familiar spell states the following:

Components: V, S, M (10gp worth of charcoal, incense, and herbs that must be consumed by fire in a brass brazier)

Now the guidelines state (as quoted below specifically the 2 sentences in red) that these components (charcoal, incense, and herbs) because they cost money must be provided by the spell caster, and further because they are denoted as being consumed by casting the spell they must be provided (purchased in advance) each time the spell is cast. However, it also has a material component that cost money that is not consumed in the spell and that is the brass brazier (or basically a brass censer which costs 5gp) which also must be provided (purchased in advance) but because it is not consumed it only needs to be purchased once (assuming it is not lost) then after that it can be re-used with each casting of this spell.

So to differentiate between a Material Component that gets consumed and one that does not -- I refer to the consumables as Components and the non-consumables as Foci which is slightly different of course than an Arcane Focus. Thus 3 separate terms to refer to 3 separate unique Material Component items.

So with all that said -- and now that we are hopefully on the same page -- the reason for this question mainly is (besides the Find Familiar spell) -- I would like to take Chromatic Orb but it has a Non-Consumed Material ComponentFoci that is a 50gpbit expensive but if the spell caster does not start with one then it renders the spell actually totally useless. Now as I stated I have run into GMs that say if you take the spell as one of your limited repertoire that the you get all the Material Components you need for at least one casting of the spell - if they are consumed then to cast the spell again you must acquire them again on the flip-side if they are not consumed then you have them for future castings but if you ever lose them you have to replace them in game. On the flip-side I have had GMs state that you must acquire any costed components for any spells you want to cast after you enter the game.

So this is what I am trying to determine -- do I take Chromatic Orb because I will initially have the material component I need to cast it as long as I do not lose it -- or do I take a different spell because I am planning on taking Find Familiar and having 2 spells that cannot be cast when I get started would not be smart on my part.

I am somewhat confused as well (also hungover, which isn't helping). I understand that we are to describe ourselves and punishment but are we still being punished at the beginning of the game, or are we gathered in the same place? Are we just meeting for the first time?
