Scene 2: Thanksgiving day

right-aligned image

Thankgiving morning had finally arrived. The night had passed mostly in peace. A bit of shuffling could be heard in the night coming from Bernice's room, along with Lara and the matriarch's muted voices. But otherwise little had disturbed the silence of the house. Snow had drifted down during the night, covering the property in a fresh layer of powder. Yet the new day dawned with the chirping of starlings and the sounds of somebody working in the kitchen. The scent of rich, flavored coffee drifted throughout the house mixed with the scent of spiced cider slowly simmering on the stove. And ever so faintly, Arabella hummed to herself as she worked.

Location aspects:
Room for everyone!
Reminders of the old days, pictures, and memorabilia

Scene aspects:
Food! Lots and lots of delicious, fragrant food!
Thanksgiving day traditions.

NPCs present:
Bernice Smith
Larissa "Lara" Black, RN
Arabella Rhodes

Randall
right-aligned image
Randy wakes slowly to the wonderful smells of Thanksgiving. Immediately he regrets it. He feels like an elephant has taken up residence on his head. He lays there - apparently naked he realizes - and waits for the elephant to depart. It does not. With a cloud full of haze in the place where his brain had been yesterday, he tries to think back. The kitchen incident and his pursuit of Bea are fairly clear in his memory. After that, his memory starts to fail. Randy is somewhat certain that he scolded Bea for her childlike outburst. He is also somewhat certain that she lit the joint in his face while he was scolding her and effectively ignored every word. The only thing he remembers with any certainty after that is laughter. He and Bea had never been particularly close and he can't remember laughing with her ... ever. Sure, together with the family - all of them together - he and Bea had laughed like that, but just the two of them? If they had, he can't remember the time right now.

Randy slowly creeps out of bed. The elephant remains firmly in place. He quickly pulls on the clothes that are scattered at the side of the bed. The elephant accompanies his every move. He traipses out the door to the shared bathroom and rinses his face. The elephant enjoys that and disappears to splash in the water … momentarily. By the time Randy starts down the stairs, that trusty elephant has taken back up position.

Feeling awful and desperate at this point for some relief, Randy decides on a two-pronged approach: coffee and cold air. With a grumbled "Good morning" and a genuine "Thank you!" accompanied by a quick hug for Arabella, Randy grabs a mug and pours a heaping cup of coffee. Unable to process any more information, he makes a beeline for the garage. Randy is completely oblivious – or at least unresponsive – to anyone and everyone else during his enacted escape.

Reaching the garage, he quickly heads for the passenger door and flings it open letting the cold air slam into him. For several minutes he stands embracing the cold air and the hot coffee before he feels some relief. Slowly Randy’s head clears and he is able to just enjoy the morning. He is going to have to remember that, if he is going to do … things with Bea again, he can’t keep pace with her. Not by a long shot. Then as he stares out at the beautiful white landscape, something catches his eye, tucked neatly amongst bats of all sizes next to a shelf in the garage. Slowly Randy extracts the object. His old hockey stick from the old street hockey days. The beat up old hunk of cheap wood and plastic has clearly seen better days and may actually consist of more duct tape than either wood or plastic. Still, for some reason Mom has kept this in the garage all these years.

Bea's boudoirBea lolls around in her old teenage bed, in the far corner of the mostly-forgotten basement of the house. She's not hungry. The munchies had hit last night, and so the kitchen was raided. She opened the taro & turnip chip mix, and had more than her fair share of them, but they didn't really satisfy. She opened up one of the substantially-hydrogenated pecan pies and took a generous slice.

Hope I didn't leave it out on the counter, she ponders as she notices that she didn't bother to change out of her clothes before falling asleep. They reek. I'll deal with that later. There's going to be a lot of dealing today.

She checks her messages on her phone. Jamison had to start his weekly Green Purgatum Cleanse early today, since the weekend didn't promise to present many opportunities for a deep colorectal treatment. He texted her at 3:45 in the morning, and 4:57, and then... 30 minutes ago. Ugh, I'll need to deal with that, too, soon. Arriving in... she glares again at her phone in the darkness. The room has blackout shades, so it's hard to know how late it is. ...an hour 20 minutes. Fine. She drops the phone onto the bedclothes. Its light dims and it's lost.

"Time to get up," she says to the dark void, and does not get up. "Family. Family time. Time to be Family. Be a family." The dark room is dead silent, suggesting that she still is not taking any action. "Yup. Love and family. Past behind us. Really making up. Today's the day. No problem." Silence.

Then there is a tremendous rustling of blankets. Bea is flailing her arms and legs, kicking the comforter that way, slamming her head against the pillow, pounding the mattress with balled up fists. Her phone falls to the floor with a clunk. "Sh**! Sh**! Sh**! Stupid stupid stupid!" She shouts at the ceiling in a teen-style tantrum. "It's so DUMB, it's not FAIR!" She flops like an angry worm. "Stupid JERK! I should just LEAVE!" She flails and kicks for a few more minutes, then lays there panting.
The kitchenA few minutes later, Bea emerges from the basement. Her hair is pulled up in a bun, and she is wearing a faux-kimono morning robe. "G'morning! Happy Thanksgiving!" she smiles grandly. "Oooh, coffee! Have you tried the Agave nectar sweetener? It's fair trade, and only half as sweet as corporate cane sugar. Everybody sleep well? I know Randy did!" She winks at him. "Jamison should be here in about an hour. Should I tell him to grab breakfast somewhere else, or will be able to catch the meal here?"

Billy White

Billy lay in bed, feeling only slightly hung over. It had only been Natural Lite, after all. Glancing over toward the window, he wasn't surprised to see the early pre-dawn light filtering through. He'd finally gotten past waking up wondering where he was, but he still couldn't sleep well in a strange bed. Comfy, for sure, but unfamiliar. He mostly lay in bed for awhile, occasionally getting up once or twice to recycle last night's binge, but otherwise feeling lazier than usual. He wondered if there was any beer left. He didn't think so...he seemed to recall polishing the case off. It made him feel a bit like a jerk, since Randy had actually supplied the beer. Then again, he'd abandoned it, so it was salvage rights, or something. Or maybe a peace offering.

The thought of the last conversation he'd had with his cousin pretty much killed off the dozing peacefulness. He wasn't in as much turmoil as he had been last night. Or, at least, he didn't feel like punching anyone. He just really wanted to go home. But there ain't no home t'go to no more, is there? he thought, a sick/sad feeling welling in the pit of his stomach to replace the beer.

He gave himself a few moments to feel sorry for himself and wonder what the hell he was going to do, then sighed and kicked himself out of bed. Sounded like people were downstairs by now, anyway. Putting on fresh clothes, brushing his teeth, and taming his hair and beard, he eventually made his way down to he common area, peering around experimentally for any conflict before emerging fully.

"Mornin'," he said to anyone within range, heading over for some coffee. He noticed Randy wasn't there, and Bea was wearing some...Japanese thing? Gesturing toward the robe with his mug, he asked Bea, "Y'get that from Japan? Looks like one a' them robes they wear, over there."

Breakfast? Arabella smiled and produced a bag that she began pulling a few things out of. "I thought we might start with a little breakfast and then move on to cooking the main meal for today, once Tom's up," she said with a small shrug of her shoulders. Out of the bag, she produced some sweet buns, and several pieces of fruit - a cantelope, grapes, apples, oranges, etc. "Want to cut up some fruit while I work on warming the buns?" she asked Bea as she crossed the kitchen to twist one of the knobs on the oven.

Do you wanna build a snowman!
right-aligned image
Rowan was an early riser by necessity, never by choice. But by this point in her life her body was used to the early hours it usually kept and even when she didn't really need to get up early she would undoubtedly wake up before the crack of dawn. Thanksgiving day was no different. She woke up with the sun still firmly behind the curve of the earth. I'm sure dad would be proud at least I'm not one of those kooky people believing the earth is flat! Ro thought bitterly and than caught herself. No! She'd promised herself, and Nana most of all, to try and work things out with her father. No use winding herself up to the opposite.

As she put her legs down next to the bed a sudden smile graced her lips. She didn't know why, but there was a warm fuzzy feeling in her chest. Like you had this amazing dream that you don't really remember. But you know it was something stupendous and worth being giddy over. With the warm and fuzzies all over her body and soul Rowan went through her usual morning routine. Dressed warmly she peeked into her Nana's room for a quick 'good morning' if she was awake. If not she just rushed downstairs and to the garage where she found the snow shovel and got to work.

She knew Billy would have done it, but she enjoyed snow too much and loved keeping active. And besides, who needed gyms and fitness when you could just shovel snow and chop wood. Or dig up ancient civilizations! By the time the driveways had been cleared Rowan was ruddy-faced from the biting morning cold and her breathe was coming out of her mouth in short, white puffs. Her eyes shone with childish glee at the white powder. She heard the denizens of the house slowly waking up to the Thanksgiving morning and headed for the garage to put the shovel in its place and join her family.

The giddy feeling from the forgotten dream still very much warming her body from the inside out. Joined by the memory of last night's conversation with Lara. Sure, it was mostly small talk. Nothing intimate by a long shot, but wasn't it how things usually started. With a conversation. Rowan grinned and had her cheeks not been red from the cold already she would have blushed.

At the door she made sure to take off her boots on the mat and dust off any residual snow on her person before entering further into the house. She headed for the kitchen where most of the family had already gathered. Save for her dad and uncle Tom. Breakfast was being prepared and Rowan's tummy rumbled in approval. "Morning!" She greeted cheery and going to Billy slapped him on the shoulder. "Sorry, Billy, I shoveled the snow from the driveway. I woke up too early and just had to do something with myself." She looked about at the production before her. "So what's for breakfast?" Ro asked heading for the cupboard where her teas were stashed.

Tom and Arabella had a long discussion about Beatrice's shenanigans. They both suspected although she was probably as upset about Bernice as Arabella was, Beatrice was up to her old tricks. As Arabella and Tom had no secrets, he told her that Jameson was likely heading to a bump in the road finances wise. Jameson had invested in a games console that was supposed to be next-gen and on trend, but simply was barely better than the current batch of consoles. Analysts predicted that it was going to be the biggest bomb ever.
The next morning he awoke to his wife gone. So Tom slips in a DVD and plays his favourite Bilko episode. The one where a chimp gets enlisted into the army, and the army fails to court marshal the chimp out. That one always makes him laugh uproariously.
Having gotten dressed, Tom joins his wife in the kitchen. Slips his arms around her waist and kisses her neck. "Hey good looking. What you got cooking?" The passion had never left them.

Arabella smiled at her husband as he entered the kitchen and threw her arms around his neck by way of greeting. "Hi, sweetie," she beamed. "Just making some breakfast things... Can I count on your help with the turkey?" she added with a batting of her eyes.

Lara had been seen coming and going from the laundry room (otherwise known as the mud room) with several loads of folded linens and clothes in her arms. When she appeared for the last time, she was escorting Bernice - who was handing onto Lara's arm for support as a just-in-case-she-looses-her-balance kind of measure.

"When does the parade come on the television?" Bernice asked. She took a few moments to watch her family interacting with each other in the kitchen and smiled to herself.

"I'll check..." Lara promised, leading the family matriarch towards the family room nearby.

BeaBea does a little shimmy when Billy mentions her robe. "Oh this old thing? I don't even know where it comes from. It just had the right energy, y'know? So Jamison just had to buy it for me. I think we were probably in Morocco? Spain?" At Arabella's prompting, Beatrice sets to the task of chopping up some kiwis, and one or two of the more exotic fruits she brought, in addition to the more staid melons and oranges proffered. "Ro, g'morning. Randy and I missed you at our little pow-wow downstairs last night. I thought you might have liked to stop in."

When Tom comes in and does his ostentatious pawing at her sister, Bea purses her lips in an effort to stay quiet, and focuses on not dinging the counter again. Luckily, her mother comes in around the same time.

"G'morning ma! Sit, sit! Cantalope? Lychee?" she offers the bowl of assorted cut fruit. "The parade? Oh, Macy's! I love my annual chance to worship at the altar of consumerism!" she says with a smile. She appears to be more-or-less earnest when she says this. Bea is most definitely the kind of person who goes out of her way to mention that she does not own a TV. It's possible that she does get a bewildered joy from the force-fed stream of anachronistic decontextualized pop-culture references.

Billy White

Billy was a little surprised at the familiarity from Ro, but grinned and gave a shrug. "I'm sure there'll be more snow," he said around the rim of his coffee. "Kinda glad t'get a break from it, honestly."

He ducked uncomfortably past Tom and Arabella, trying not to look at the two lovebirds as he shuffled free of the kitchen. He nodded agreeably when Bea explained about the robe, which apparently was Spanish, not Japanese.

His soul withered just a tiny bit when it turned out that the plan for the day was to watch the parade. Apparently, actually watch it. Sit there, watching people watch the parade, in fact. On one hand, it was sad that people would line up in the cold to look at 50-year-old balloons. On the other hand, though, the family would be watching those same folks on TV. At least it was warm, and they didn't have to actually be in New York.

Maybe me and Randy can sneak off and watch football while they're all watching the parade, he thought. It might be a good time to talk a little more about what happened with his Pa, Randy, and the money. It's harder to get upset about stuff when you're watching a game. It was like neutral territory for guys, sacred ground that no man dare violate. Watch the game, drink some....

Dangit, he thought in irritation. I drank all Randy's beer. Oh well, he'd just go out and get more...good excuse to get out of the house before the fighting began. "Hey, I'm gonna make a run to th' store," he announced, working on finishing his coffee as he headed to the closet for his coat. "Anybody need anythin'?"

Randy had been absent while the others had begun to gather in the kitchen, but he hadn't been idle. The ancient (and decrepit) stick, the fresh snow, the lingering effects of one of nature's remedies, and a dash of family drama from the previous night to get the blood flowing had resulted in a glimmer in his eye that had been absent for a while. Almost like when we were kids! It hadn't taken long for him to find a pair of his old hockey gloves ...

As the others gather and begin the niceties of the morning, Randy bursts through the garage door and beelines for Arabella. On his way, he puts a firm forearm in Billy's back, pinning him to the wall momentarily, and bumps Tom aside with a (fairly) gently hip check. Then he knocks the sweet roll from Arabella's hands with an old, smelly glove and flicks it back toward the garage with the stick. Spinning, he shouts, "And Randy is on a breakaway!" Without waiting for anyone to react, he races toward the roll and flicks it toward the door before stick-handling it back out the garage door and into the driveway. Ro's hard work is only slightly ruined where Randy has dug out a small alcove in the snow - in which the sweet roll now rests.

We Used to Be Best Buddies, But Now We're Not
right-aligned image
James watched Rowan for quite a while, his finger lifting one of the blinds just enough for him to see outside. With the lights and his laptop off, he could watch the sun rise and his daughter shovel the pristine powder. "She still sleeps badly, just like her old man," he thought ruefully. He had been up late, working on the computer, and still couldn't sleep much past 3:00. Early morning had always been his most productive time, but now he simply watched his daughter and reminisced. It seemed like yesterday that he'd bundled her into her big yellow snowsuit and taught her how to make snow angels. She'd stomped around in her ridiculous plastic moon boots, and how they'd both laughed like maniacs when a tree branch deposited its load of wet snow right down James' back. He wanted to rush down and join her, but he knew that the welcome he'd receive would make the frigid morning seem balmy by comparison...but worst of all, the dagger in the heart, was the involuntary little start she made every time their eyes met. James shook his head and let the blind fall shut, then opened up his laptop.

It had been a fruitful night's work. Decades in academia and consulting had honed his ability to sift rapidly through piles of government documents and find exactly what he wanted. What he couldn't find quickly or easily, a well-placed phone call often turned up. The folder of PDFs sitting on his virtual desktop was a prime example. Good old Tom, Chief Holier-than-Thou, had dozens of ethics complaints filed against him over his years on the force. Unlawful use of force, planting evidence, coercing confessions...pretty much the whole gamut. Quite a few of those complaints had resulted in "temporary" reprimands in his file, but on the internet, nothing was temporary. A late-night phone call had revealed that one of those complaints had ended up just shy of an indictment, one that got shut down by a re-election minded DA. "Maybe you shouldn't be so eager to tell other people how to live, you crooked sonofabitch," James said to himself as he put on a pair of light wool trousers and a long-sleeved t-shirt to go downstairs and brave the breakfast table.

He was the last to come down, apparently. James wasn't really surprised, he'd been lingering upstairs for hours. He kissed his mother on the cheek and gave Bea a playful hip-check as he passed by, surveying the remains of breakfast. "Good morning, all." What he really craved was a donut or three - something he didn't have very often. Luckily, Billy handed him a get out of jail free card. "Hey, I'm gonna make a run to th' store...Anybody need anythin'?" James spoke up eagerly. "Mind a little company, Billy? I wouldn't mind a little fresh air and the chance to pick up a few things before the stores close."

OOCSpending a FATE point, targeting Tom's "Integrity is important to me" aspect

Ignoring Bea's comment, Lara proceeded to select a channel showing New York street, sidewalks crammed with people while a pretty, brunette with a microphone and far too much cold-weather gear stood in the foreground telling the audience about the incredibly high levels of anticipation and all the preparation that made the day's parade possible. Bernice settled into her favorite recliner to watch the television - and occasionally look up at one of her relatives and smiled pleasantly.

Meanwhile, antics broke out in the kitchen and Arabella protested, "hey!" when Randy came sweeping through. By the time she had armed herself with an oven mitt, he had made his escape into the garage once again. She was forced to lament her missing roll and shake her head at the 'juvenile' behavior. "It's like he's still a teenager, sometimes..." she commented with a half-grin that she couldn't keep from coming onto her expression.

"I see what you're doing there. It's still working but I still see it. Of course you can have your sous chef." Tom said to his wife, with a wolfish grin. He is still in a good mood, and isn't going to let other family members, likely Beatrice, spoil it. Bilko never failed to put him into a happy frame of mind. Even if he knew most of the episodes off by heart, they still made him laugh.
Randall's shenanigans made him laugh too. "I think being young at heart isn't a bad thing, my love. Of course you keep me young."

Billy White

Billy struggled to maintain his coffee's balance as he was checked into the boards. Turning, he gave Randy a crazy look for a minute, wondering what was going on. Seeing Randy fast break his way through the house, leaving the family's defensemen baffled and stranded, Billy grinned, and was about to head out after him before James extended his offer to come along.

"Oh...uh, yeah James," he said, looking somewhat like a kid who was just told he couldn't go play until he finished his homework. "Yeah, lemme just grab my coat." Heading to the closet, he detoured slightly to open up the garage door and yell, "That was a dang foul, Randy! Two minute minor!"

Chuckling and pulling the coat on, he nodded to James to indicate being ready, gave his cap an adjusting tug, and headed outside. "Wanna take the truck? I ain't cleaned it out in forever, so if you wanna drive, that's fine too."

That, and the truck was just about out of gas, but Billy figured he was safe. He couldn't see James crawling into his beat up pickup, even at gunpoint.
