There's also the worldly ronin school!

They make great Jack's of all trades as they get to pick a curriculum skill each rank and all their flex skills get bonuses.

It's not great at anything but it's good at everything!

Yeah I suppose I could take a Ronin or two if the apps were good.

Dropped you some deserved karma for organizing the game for us, Zazaq. Takes guts to dive right into a new system as the GM for a crowd which has been requesting!

I encourage others to karma up, as well, and I look forward to the game.

I had been in the initial GM-search thread, and somehow missed it moving over to an official thread. Whoops! I'm still very much interested. Had initially wanted to go Crab or Crane, but since those are well covered I'll come up with a different idea and submit. Preferred was a Yasuki trader or a Doji courtier. I'll get a new idea up by tomorrow.

Would you allow Imperial characters (from Emerald Empire)? Thinking the Miya, since they're in general the most beloved of the Imperial Families. Sent as a gesture of goodwill from the Emperor's bloodline to strengthen the new Clan. A Miya Herald would be very useful in making peace amongst the Clans trying to integrate into a new whole. Or a Miya Cartographer to help with taming this wild land. By and large sending me truly is a gift from the Emperor, but at the same time also has the side benefit of keeping a very close eye on this new Clan for the Imperial Families.

@ManWithDoor- Zazaq answered this already saying he would prefer everyone make a samurai form the great clans.

Wait, we can't have two apps from the same clan? I'm planning on submitting a Scorpion courtier myself.

I was under the impression that Zaz was only taking one per clan so that you double up at your own peril!

That's why they suggested not doing a combo app as it's highly unlikely they'd both be selected.

Yeah, i think Zaz wanted diversity so like having ideally one samurai from each great clan.

It looks like there are going to be so many apps that inevitably there are going to be more than one for some clans. Might as well submit what you want to play.

Still the better part of a week before apps close.

Yes that's correct, apply for whatever you want, your just likely to get in if there's nobody else with the same clan applying.

Unfortunately, I'm set on my Crane samurai, and Imveros and I had wanted to play together and potentially tie concepts -- which is where my application ended up heading. Worked hard on it, as did he on his own, so I'll have to hope we're both chosen!

Mirumoto Saru
right-aligned image

1) What Clan does your character belong to?
Dragon [+1 Fire, +1 Meditation, Status: 30]
2) What family does your character belong to?
Mirumoto [+1 Earth, +1 Fitness, +1 Tactics, Glory:44, Wealth:5 koku]
3) What is your character’s school, and what roles does that school fall into?
Mirumoto Two-Heavens Adept School [Bushi] [+1 Fire, +1 Earth, +1 Command/Fitness/Meditation/Tactics/Theology, Honor: 50, Techniques: Kata/Rituals/Shuji, Starting Techniques: Kata (Striking as Earth) / Dazzling Performance, Way of the Dragon (School Ability)
4) How does your character stand out in their school?
Thoroughness, patience, or calm (+1 Earth Ring): Known for being independent thinkers, the Dragon have a common saying that a young Saru took to heart: "When you are content to simply be yourself without comparison, your honor will never tarnish." Despite the tragedies that he has weathered, Saru has molded his life to be like a granite stone surrounded by rapids. While others rush around him, driven by their passions and transient concerns, Saru exudes calm and methodical thought, displaying an uncanny wisdom much more suited for a man two or three times Saru's age.
5) Who is your lord and what is your character's duty to them?
Mirumoto Ken'ichi, daimyo of the Mirumoto clan, takes a more hands-on approach to ruling his land than many daimyo outside of the Dragon clan. As such, he expects his Samurai to aid the peasantry and guard travelers through his land from potential attacks by bandits or wild beasts. Saru dutifully met these expectations, finding a sense of satisfaction in uplifting those of lesser status than himself.
6) What does your character long for and how might this impede their duty?
Saru does not have any great ambitions beside seeing his daughter live a happy and long life. However, his concern for his daughter borders on overriding his duty to his daimyo, and it remains an open question were the two responsibilities to come into conflict which he would sacrifice for the other.
7) What is your character's relationship with their clan?
His clan balances the ideals of bushido with a sense of humility, and in that balance Saru sees a harmony the other clans lack. In turn, that harmony leads them to honor and happiness. They are a light held out for the other clans to see, and Saru finds great satisfaction in exemplifying his clan.[+5 Glory]
8) What does your character think of Bushido?
Bushido is life itself.[+10 Honor]
9) What is your greatest accomplishment so far?
Not long after being presented with his niten, Saru was tasked alongside other Mirumoto samurai with escorting a Crane courtier across his daimyo's land, a series of valleys that cut into the mountains of the Dragon Lands. During the journey, a stray mountain Oni ambushed the group in a steep pass that ran along the edge of a high cliff. While the other Samurai surrounded their charge defensively, Saru drew forth his niten and stepped forth to face the Oni alone, affording the others the chance to withdraw from the fight safely. Through determination, skill and a lucky strike, Saru managed to knock the Oni over the edge of the cliff, breaking the evil creature on the rocks below. Upon his victorious return to the court of his daimyo, he was granted the title of gokū, meaning "awakened to the void" for his unshakable commitment to bushido and mastery of his own emotions.[Indomitable Will]
10) What holds you back?
Saru was married for but a brief time before his wife died in childbirth, leaving him to raise his daughter Ayame alone. He cherishes her and fears for her life, as she has always suffered from poor health and a frail body. He would lay his life down for her that she might live. However, he is nearly incapable of communicating with children in an effective manner. Saru vacillates between his rather serious adult persona and practical jokes when interacting with children, unable to decide whether he should speak to them as an equal or try and appeal to their mischievous side. As such, despite his love for his daughter, the two have an awkward relationship, and Saru often relegates parental duties to Narumi, a heimin caretaker and former nursemaid that watches over Ayame while Saru is busy with his samurai obligations.[Kisshōten's Curse]
11) What makes you feel at peace?
Saru makes a habit of stopping at any shrines or temples he comes across, making sure to leave an offering and prayer for his daughter's health each time. He hopes that by entreating as many kami as possible, perhaps they will keep his daughter alive for one more day. Whether or not these efforts are effective, they serve to lift a bit of weight from his heart. He also runs his hands through his hair whenever he is deep in thought, a mannerism which does nothing to keep his hair from looking disheveled, but which serves to soothe him and keep his emotions from overriding logic.[Enlightenment]
12) What troubles your character the most?
Saru has always tried his best to uphold the tenets of Bushido, and in his view, deception in any form is antithesis to those tenets. As such, Saru feels uncomfortable with half-truths and misdirection, and approaches something close to quiet rage when he feels he has been directly lied to. As such, he tries his utmost to speak the truth at all times, though he still permits himself both silence and eloquent speech as methods of avoiding offending others, so long as the context does not force these to be considered as deceptions as well.[Painful Honesty]
13) Who have you learned from the most?
Mirumoto Asakira, Saru's father. As a child, Asakira would return to the family home after serving the daimyo and spend the evenings telling Saru stories of his journeys. Saru positively hung upon his father's every word, and from these early memories Saru formed his love and deep commitment to the tenets of Bushido which his father espoused. Asakira lived long enough to watch his son receive the niten, but not a year later, Asakira and other samurai fell in a border skirmish with the Lion Clan. Saru was present that day, exchanging final words with his father as Saru cradled him in his arms on the battlefield. Those last moments cemented Saru's commitment to Bushido, and especially the tenet of duty, which his father never veered from.[Paragon of a Bushido Tenet: Duty and Loyalty]
14) What do people notice first upon encountering you?
Hair that refuses to behave, a spirit that will not break, a mouth creased by laughter and eyes that hide deep sorrow. The accoutrement that Saru possesses is not generally visible, but significant nonetheless: a necklace with a pendant that he wears beneath his kimono. Within the pendant is a carefully rolled scroll with a poem written by his wife upon their engagement. It is one of the few material possessions that Saru shows any concern for.
15) How do you react to stressful situations?
In moments of conflict, Saru will always follow the code of Bushido to the letter. That said, barring a public display that would cause him to lose face, Saru prefers to adopt a conciliatory manner, hoping to reach a level of harmony with others. When his emotions do get the better of him, Saru tends to hide from his true feelings by seeking out honorable diversions and entertainment. He would much rather laugh or smile than sit and reflect on his troubles.
16) What is your relationship with other clans?
Though he would not display it openly, Saru holds a certain level of disdain for the Crane and even more for the Scorpion, due to their penchant for deception when it suits them. The other clans he is cordial with, though he is not always successful in masking the scar of his father's death when dealing with members of the Lion. Around them, Saru often adopts a stiff and direct demeanor, his tension often visible as he tries to interact as little as possible and look for opportunities to keep his distance.
17) How would your character's parents describe them?
Saru's mother, a Scorpion, finds him capable and a good father, but a bit naive in his commitment to bushido. She hopes that some day he can learn to get out of his own way. Saru's father, while he lived, saw his son as his greatest joy and achievement.
18) Who were you named to honor?
Mirumoto Satoru. When not regaling him with tales from his own journeys, Saru's father would tell of the great victory Saru's ancestor won against the Gozoku regime. Afterward, he had been awarded with a magnificent suit of armor, which has remained within the family for centuries. The suit has now been passed on to Saru since his father's death.[Famous Deed]
19) What is your personal name?
Saru. While a variation on the name of his famed ancestor, Saru also chose his name on account of his penchant for practical jokes as a child, a characteristic which earned him the nickname of "monkey," which is one possible meaning of the name Saru.
20) How will your character die?
Ideally, he will die at home surrounded by grandchildren, with his daughter by his side. But Saru knows the life of a bushi rarely ends in such a manner, it being entirely possible that he will die charging into battle or by an assassin's hand.
21) Why, of all the samurai your master had, did he choose to give you up?
Saru was not chosen to depart the dragon on account of a failing of his own. Rather, his daimyo was all too aware that most of the other clans would choose to pay the emperor's levy by offering up their miscreants. Having something of a history with helping to establish small clans within the empire, the Dragon wished this new clan all the best in finding their own place, and Saru's daimyo knew that a soul as pure and loyal as his would be a great benefit in bringing honor and glory to the clan.
22) Was that period exactly as long as it took you to travel to your new master? Or did you do anything with this brief time as a free ronin?
With a daughter and caretaker in tow, Saru did not have spare time for adventurers. He traveled quickly with his family to their new home, and spent any additional time he might have had ensuring that Ayame and Narumi would be comfortable and happy before Saru had to report to the new daimyo.

Kaito Hisashi of the Phoenix Clan

1. What clan does your character belong to? The clan of the Phoenix. (+1 Void, +1 Theology, Status: 30)
2. What family does your character belong to? The Kaito family. (+1 Air, +1 Fitness, +1 Theology, Glory: 40, Starting Wealth: 4 koku)
3. What is your character’s school, and what roles does that school fall into? Kaito Shrine Keeper (Monk). +1 Air, +1 Water, +1 Martial Arts (Ranged), +1 Meditation, +1 Smithing, +1 Theology. Honor: 45. Starting Techniques: Hawk’s Precision (Kata), Tempest of Air/Howl of Isora (Invocation), Cleansing Rite (Ritual), Commune with the Spirits (Ritual). Sacred Arrows (School Ability). Starting Outfit: Sanctified robes, wakizashi, yumi, quiver of arrows, knife, scroll satchel, traveling pack.
4. How does your character stand out within their school? Self-awareness, insight, or mysticism (+1 Void): Even among the very spiritual and mystical Phoenix clanmembers Kaito Hisashi was an exception. Even as a child, under the tutelage of his grandmother, Hisashi had a special eye for omens and even the most subtle of signs of the spirits‘ will. His special attunement to the spirit world further increased during Hisashi’s years of training and study at the Kaito family dojo. Hisashi’s gift made him something of a prodigy among the future Shrine Keepers, though everything changed after his grandmother passed away.
5. Who is your lord and what is your character duty to them? Hisashi owed his duty and allegiance to lord Kaito Benjiro, provincial daimyo charged with the maintenance of the temples and shrines of the Phoenix clan to the northeast of their domain. Hisashi’s humility and shyness, along with the strangeness of his ways had lord Benjiro appoint him lone keeper of a small, isolated and rarely visited shrine, high on a mountain. The keeper of the so-called „Voice of the World“ shrine was usually appointed for a single year, though Hisashi had already served for almost four years before the order came for him to leave the shrine and join the Rat clan. Hisashi always carried out his lord’s orders without second thought and even understood Kaito Benjiro’s rationale for „banishing“ him in a way, unfortunately he never came to feel trust or affection for the man himself, only respect for his office. Now, with a new lord to serve, a new duty will be entrusted upon him and no matter what it shall be, Hisashi plans to carry it out to the utmost of his abilities.
6. What does your character long for, and how might this impede his duty? Hisashi wants to finally be freed of the influence that the unknown spirit has upon him. Uncertain that he will ever be strong enough to exorcise it, he fears that in order to get rid of it, he will have to do the spirit’s bidding. This could of course be opposite to his daimyo’s wishes. Further, a true possession of his body through the spirit during a stressful situation resulting to an „Unmasking“ could also cause Hisashi to act in some way that could damage his lord’s interests.
7. What is your character’s relationship with their clan? Kaito Hisashi loves and respects his clan and is thankful for the skills and knowledge he acquired under the tutelage of the clan’s elders. The philosophies of the clan have shaped him and his beliefs of peaceful and harmonious coexistence of the material and spiritual worlds (+5 Glory). At the same time, Hisashi is somewhat disappointed in his superiors (but not the clan) for not having the power or inclination to rid him of his affliction. As a result of the above he is convinced that he alone must find the solution to his problem.
8. What does your character think of Bushido? Bushido is the one true way taught by the eight great Kami, blessed by the Fortunes and embodied by the honorable ancestors. Life without Bushido is a life in contrast to the ways of heaven and thus cursed and miserable (+ 10 Honor).
9. What is your character’s greatest accomplishment so far? Hishasi’s training at the Kaito dojo but most importantly his natural bond to the spirit world give him a kind of „sixth sense“, allowing him to sense spirits and supernatural beings, their general intentions and even changes of the energy around him. Despite being shunned by most of his Phoenix clanmembers for his manners, all recognize his close connection to the „unseen world“ and its beings, along with the possible benefits of this bond. Specific Distinction: Sixth Sense (Void).
10. What holds your character back the most in life? Kaito Hisashi’s life changed the day his grandmother passed away. Ever since Hisashi sensed that a spiritual entity had chosen to bind itself to him and influence his life for some unknown reason. Though it doesn’t seek Hisashi’s death, the entity is certainly not benign or respectful of its host’s needs and wishes. This possession was the reason Hisashi became over time increasingly withdrawn, shy and even strange, for he started mumbling prayers and performing rituals he hoped would protect him from the spirit’s influence. Specific Adversity: Haunted (Void).
11. What activity most makes your character feel at peace? Ever since he was a child, Hisashi was delighted to interpret the many signs around him that offered glimpses of the future. His gift only grew with age and experience and even to this day Hisashi will never fail to inquire what the world has in store for him every chance he gets. Specific Passion: Fortune-Telling (Void).
12. What concern, fear or foible troubles your character the most? Hisashi’s inner struggle has made itself manifest in the young Shrine Keeper‘s manners. The once open and gregarious boy in the Kaito dojo has turned into an always serious, never smiling, shy and distant adult, who tries to avoid attention if at all possible. Specific Anxiety: Meekness (Fire).
13. Who has your character learned the most from during their life? The one person that marked Hisashi’s life the most was Kaito Akiko, his grandmother. Highly respected not only in her family but the whole Phoenix clan for her closeness to Kami, Fortunes, spirits and mystical beings, she was even rumored to have been blessed by one of the Ki-Rin. Sensing the same power within Hisashi as within herself, Akiko made certain that her grandson learned from her all his young age would allow him. His grandmother’s death severely affected Hisashi and perhaps it was this trauma that attracted the entity that possessed him. Even though things deteriorated rapidly ever since, Hisashi sometimes feels the comforting presence of his grandmother near him, even years after her death. Since this familiar feeling often precedes some small blessing or stroke of luck, Hisashi believes that his grandmother is watching over him, as she had promised she would. Specific Distinction from the „Emerald Empire“ book: Spiritual Protector (Void).
14. What do people notice first upon encountering your character? Kaito Hisashi seems at first glance to be a typical member of the Phoenix clan, neither particularly large or small, with shoulder long hair tied in a bun and without any particular marks. His clothes -except for his ceremonial robe- are of average quality and without any ornamentation, but clean and orderly. Serious and usually avoiding eye contact, he seems to be extremely humble, unwilling to disturb those who have come to visit the shrine, though he is quick to silently fulfill any needs they might have. Should one look closer however one might notice that sometimes Hisashi appears to be hearing voices no one else can hear, stare at some distant point without apparent reason, mumble a small prayer or draw a protective sign on the ground in the middle of a conversation, making him appear not only humble and servile but strange.
15. How does your character react to stressful situations? The first signs to betray Hisashi’s nervousness are the pearls of sweat forming on his forehead, his eyes staring at his feet and his clenched jaw. When the stress levels rise further his eyes start darting back and forth seeking for a sign or solution, while his hands either clasp a protective talisman or start forming silent invocations.
16. What are your character’s preexisting relationships with other clans, families organizations and traditions? For Kaito Hisashi a life according to the will of the Kami and the tenets of Bushido is first and foremost. Believing that only the Phoenix and Dragon clans pay sufficient attention to the unseen, but all-encompassing world around them, he thinks that all other clans should work on their spirituality if they desire to possess the inherent harmony of heaven. This doesn’t make them lesser or less worthy in his eyes, just misguided, though he certainly feels unworthy to instruct them in these points. The Unicorn clan has won a special place in Hisashi’s heart for one elderly Ide Trader named Ide Yosuke, visiting the „Voice of the World“ while Hisashi served as its Keeper, was the only person that Kaito Hisashi opened up since the death of his grandmother. After a lengthy conversation Yosuke gifted Hisashi with an exquisite Bower’s Kit and invited the young Keeper to seek him in the Unicorn lands, claiming that only a journey away from what he already knew would offer him answers instead of more questions.
17. How would your character’s parents describe them? Hishasi’s parents were there for him as a child, though always after his beloved grandmother. Lacking Akiko’s and even their son’s gifts they were content to see their boy become wiser in the ways of the spirits. Shocked at their son’s gradual „transformation“ after Akiko’s passing, they would really love to help Hisashi, though they didn’t know how. When Hisashi’s father’s tips, shouts and curses failed to bring the desired effect, his mother tried to teach him her medicine skills, hoping that her technique would restore the balance of the energies within him, unfortunately with little success. (+1 Medicine). His empty stare and his mumblings unnerved both his parents and his siblings, so that they were relieved first when Hisashi was appointed Keeper of the „Voice of the World“ shrine and then when it was decided that he would join the newly formed Rat clan. This was certainly the will of the Kami and if the Kami couldn’t help Hisashi become „normal“ no one could.
18. Who was your character named to honor? Hisashi became his name not to honor an ancestor but because it was his grandmother’s desire. Kaito Akiko interrupted Hisashi’s father, who was about to give the child a name, and claimed that the boy’s name would be Hisashi (always with you). Out of respect and fearing the displeasure of the spirits should they ignore their wishes, Hisashi’s parents complied and named their Firstborn son as his grandmother had ordained. Pleased, Kaito Akiko presented Hisashi with an Omamori (Boon of Fukurokujin). Though Akiko revealed many secrets to her grandson, the special meaning of his name was not one of them. Could it be somehow bound to the entity haunting him?
19. What is your character’s personal name? Hisashi knows no other name, than that given to him by his grandmother. Even though he cannot see its significance, he trusts his grandmother to have made the right choice.
