Student Sign Up Thread

If you are interested in the concept, and wish to (potentially) improve your writing skills, this is where you request a classroom and a teacher.

The requirements to sign up as a student are:

1) At least one year on site

2) At least 1000 posts

3) You must be able to produce THREE game-type posts for critique by your mentor. These can be game posts, portions of game applications, or just newly written posts to meet this requirement.

4) Have given at least 100 RPXP "hits" to other players (regardless of whether you give actual points, you must have recognized multiple, separate people on the site for good role play experiences).

If you meet all four (4) pre-requisites, you can apply.

At this time, classrooms are VERY limited, so we can only accept a couple candidates at a time. You will be placed in a queue based on your posting interest, and we will take all candidates who meet the criteria based on their position in line.

Applications are open again, but the wait times will be lengthy.

I'm sorry, but those requirements seem very counterproductive/-intuitive to me?
Isn't the point here to teach new roleplayers how to write a proper post? By the time you've been here a year and wrote 1000 posts, you'll probably have the hang of the posting basics?
I can understand having some delay for signups, so you don't invest a lot of effort into someone who's just going to wander off again, but 1000 posts and 1 year membership is too much. I figure The Writing Block is designed to be something like an intermediate course?
I'd suggest cutting those signup requirements in half. That is still plenty of time for people to get familiar with the site and the basics and to prove they're committed to RPGX, while also not discouraging people from signing up.

Perhaps the counterintuitive parts comes from the fact that the goal of this area is not to teach new players how to write a standard post. That's part of what the New Player Solo Game system is for.

This is to help aspiring writers who want to better their game, and take it to the next level, through a series of ten+ exercises that help them learn and practice their skills. And yes, by the time they are here a year, and have 1000 posts, they have the basics down.

We have found, over the years of running this, that a time based AND a post based requirement is optimal for our purposes: It isn't terribly hard to get 1000 posts in a month, all without ever writing a game post, actually, so we felt a time based modifier needed to be in place to weed out those whose post count is artificially high. And, we know that some people create a profile, and then abandon it for weeks, months or even longer, and return without experiencing the site, participating in games, etc.. So a deadline of two months and six months was not successful in weeding those people out. Another part of being a good writer/player here is being faithful to the game(s) you are in, and we have found that a high bar for posting, involvement and commitment is likely the best indicator of that.

Also, participation in this area uses a LOT of the mentor's time (I have some students that have been working for more than a year on their lessons), and so, we consider that level of 1:1 dedication to someone to be somewhat a reward for community involvement. Is it therefore "exclusive"? Probably, yes. Exclusive to those that have shown they want to be here, that they want to play good games, that they want to involve themselves in the community and make it a better place. Rather than make it Community Supporter only, however, the designer wanted to offer it to the entire gaming network as a perk for being a good person, being active, being faithful, and being steady.

We don't require it, but ideally, a person would have finished their New Player Solo Game, to get the basics. For many people here, that can take a long time. The average for my players is about 4 months, with many taking six months to complete. I just graduated one that took 9 months, for example. They can do it in weeks, but my decade+ years of running NPSG experience shows a longer average than that.

They may or may not have applied for other games while doing the NPSG, and or been accepted. We believe that they should be in some "real" games, with other players, before applying here, in order to practice what they've learned, and build up their own skill sets and styles. And once again, it can easily take a few months to get through the first encounter or two in many games, and get your writing feet wet. Added all together, and adding in a bit of buffer to allow people to explore, contribute, practice the craft of writing, we ended up with the bar we have set.

Lastly, as you yourself mentioned, the requirements work out and tend to weed out the "seagull" gamers, those who fly in, make a lot of noise, and then disappear. With only two mentors, and the level of work/commitment involved in taking on a student, we have to be careful and be sure we are not stretched so thin that we fail in giving our students 100%.

Your comments, criticisms and suggestions will be taken to the volunteers who designed and run this program, and presented for their consideration. We are always looking for ways to improve the experience of The Writer's Block, as well as the entire site experience, and your concerns will be discussed and added to the feedback pile. Thank you!
