Just like to suggest "Sovereign" by CJ Sansom.

C.J Sansom is a Historian of the Tudor period.

Set in the reign of Henry VIII. Basically its a fictional murder mystery set in and around real historical events at that time. It provides a wonderful insight to the life and times of that period. (good DM source material)
The main Character, Matthew Shardlake, is a wonderful character on which to base an RPG character to be played here on the RPG CRossing site.
The post script of the book makes for very interesting reading !

I have no hesitation in recommending this book. (Oh, and i'm not paid or getting any benefits for this recommendation)
