Sometimes an author introduces you to a fantasy world and it feels like the world is huge, and even though you're just in one little corner of it, there's a whole other 99% of it out there, existing, changing, having a history. To me, this book felt like the only things that really existed were the things we could see, and the only people who really had a history were the ones we met. So when these particular people were the ones to change the world, that felt necessary, because they were kind of the only ones that existed. I don't know what magic is done to evoke a huge world while only showing a fragment of it. It's pretty freaking cool when it happens.
