I didn’t really love it — it was just about similar stuff.

Also maybe the show Mythic Quest!

Okay. I WRONGFULLY skimmed. I didn’t love it, but—I wrongfully skimmed. Maybe if I had invested I woudl have had different feelings. But I did not. I DID like the RISE better. The young people try to make it and learn and such. I am a person who has read the first half of Jane Erie a LOT, the WART part of THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING a lot. And then the next parts maybe a couple of times.

My interest in the second half was markedly lower, and I kinda did a skip to the end at a certain point.

I am the bad book club member, the one who shows up to drink your wine , Hoover up the hummus, and talk crap about who is violating the Neighborhood Association ByLaws about when the X Max deco MUST COME DOWN.

This month and next is just SO PACKED for me.

That said, are we doing URSULA K LEGUIN for Pick a Person with a WHOLE BUNCHA BOOKS month? I know bothers had suggested. I will absolutely read TOMBS OF ATUAN as I have not read it since I was a teenager.

HEY that is another one where I loved the first third ashes she is a kid ripped from home and in this new place being the chosen or whatever an then only read the last parts once or twice.

Keep talking about Gabrielle Zevin...

...but also here's the May thread to talk about Ursula K. Le Guin!

I found a quote I really like. It's a paragraph unto itself:

"Other people's parents are often a delight."

There's so much packed in there. It's so true, and so fraught.

The extension, mostly, that one's parents are often a delight to other people, when they aren't a delight to you. I feel this.

Ok, I finally finished it. I liked the first third, found the middle a slog, and then liked a lot about the last act.

I don't love grindingly realistic books about miserable people who don't really need to be miserable just because they're smart. And I didn't really find a character to root for here.

But what I did love...

On the other hand what I didn't love...

I haven't read this one yet but am on the hold list at my library for the audio. Has anyone listened it to and have thoughts about the audio presentation?

I haven't listened to the audio -- but just want to say -- welcome to the book club
