it's all good though, I'm glad I rolled well. I have a feeling that willpower or con will come in handy.

Out of curiosity, those of you that chose to be human, did you take the stats or the feat. and which feat if you did?

I'm still not quite sure, but I most likely will go variant human. I could pick up a feat that would give another +1 to an ability so I have another 14 (Resilient - Wisdom might be good). Also considering Mobility and some others.

I'm kind of skimming the feats now. I think the melee feats are a lot better than the caster choices. Sentinel is basically a free oa every round, charger adds +5 dmg, crossbow expert gives you another attack as a bonus action every round, as well as dual wield. Even lucky that gives you free advantage 3x/day is pretty sweet. In this version I really feel like the only good time to take a feat is as lvl 1 human. Other than that the points are almost always better.

Yeah, I'm probably going to go with what Skylarious did and pick a feat that gives me a bump to one of my ability scores.

The other consideration is that 5e has a max of 20 for ability scores, so once you've already got a key ability or two at 20 the feats become more appealing.

I am designing a cleric for another game, and decided to take the heavy armor feat. I see what you mean about maxing out your key stat. I think once I get the cleric to 20 wis (Level 8) I probably will hit up some feats. (It's going to be casting based...Light domain.)

In regards to the stats discussion in the other thread, I believe the highest total modifer you can get with point buy is +5. So if your rolled stats equal a higher total, you technically have better than you can get with point buy even if the numbers don't sound as high. You are just more well rounded.

No it specifically states that 15 is the highest you can raise a stat with point buy, assuming you can get +2 from race highest you can get is 17 +3

Yes, so you can get three 15's with point buy (a total of +6) but that would give you three 8's (a total of -3) making a total modifer of only +3, which is even lower than I previously thought.
That's not taking into account racial bonuses. Sorry, I didn't make that clear in my previous post. EDIT: Now that I've had a chance to look at the basic rules, the standard array gives you a +5 total modifer before racial bonuses and the levelling out stats gives a +6, but nothing higher than 13 before racial modifers. So my previous estimate from memory of a total of +5 was pretty close. Last edited by G in Japan; Nov 13th, 2014 at 11:16 PM. |
