Oh god what have I done. I've let a bunch of power gamers into my campaign!
Totally JK. Hahaha. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, I'm excited. For those who did not choose a Scales of War specific BG from the list, and would like to please feel free to request a BG and I'll provide one for you. If not it'll be great to figure out some way to immerse your character a bit more into the world so it's easier for me at least to give some strong motivations for your character to pursue. Speaking of power gaming and motivations: I'd also like to hear what type of player you are, what you expect from me as a DM and what type of challenges you want to see you or your character faced with. If you're more comfortable PMing me about that feel free to do so. And also take the opportunity just to take a quick read through that game rules post and let me know if there's anythkng you think I missed or you'd like added. Thanks everyone!

You either get equipment choices from your BG and class OR you roll for starting gold and use that to buy your equipment rather than the BG and class equipment you'd get.

Hey Montage,
As far as my preferences for play: I definitely tend to think of roleplaying coming first. I like tweaking builds and thinking about combat strategy, but that's secondary, especially in play-by-post which I think facilitates good character development moreso than fun fights. That said, a mix of both is great. I'm sure whatever balance you land on will be fine. I'll PM you about some more specific stuff about challenges for the character. The stuff in the rules thread looks fine. |

Despite my comments on stats, I don't really worry about them that much. However, I do like the randomness of a dice roll, even if it means losing out on noticing/achieving something. As for expectations from the game, as long as it's fun and interesting, I am happy. I am one of those have already played SoW in the past with 4e, so I am also interested in your adaptation to 5e. I will keep the 8 I rolled. I think it fits the character to have a below average charisma, as she is doesn't have the best attitude toward non-elves, strangers, and especially strangers who are non-elves. |

Speaking of having a high charisma score, I might take the Inspiring Leader feat if nobody else wants to take that route. Would give us all a bit better chance of surviving early-game. Or I'm going with shield master. One or the other. And a mechanics question: the fighting style Protection (Fighter), what exactly are the "disadvantages" I impose? The enemy would need to roll twice for the attack and take the lowest.

I'm always one for rolling stats. I feel like it makes for more interesting outcomes, and I think on average a rolled character is stronger.

Most of the time. I like rolling stats but I've ended up with some pretty awful rolls before too. then again, my first 5e character I rolled was a dwarf barb and rolled 17,17,16,15,14,13. making it 19/19 str/con at 1st level lol...

I rolled a character a long while back for a d20 modern game that was supposed to be a computer nerd. He didn't have a stat lower than 16... I really should have bottled some of that luck for later...

I don't like rolling stats, I like everyone being relatively equivalent in ability. I hate when one person has huge stats and does everything for everyone while everyone else sits on their thumbs. Or the opposite.

I like rolling because it gives the random chance that you're looking the wrong way, picked the wrong spot to climb a wall, wind has blown leaves over tracks, etc. I do agree with hating when you have that one person who negates everyone else. I like a rounded party so that, say, Rain and Anastrianna handle the outdoors stuff but we have someone who knows about arcane to deal with magic, the fighter who deals with athletic feats, etc. Everyone has their role and everyone has a chance to shine when it comes to what they do best. |

Edited the above post to be more accurate.
I don't like rolling stats is what I mean, I like it when everyone has the same amount of resources to build their character with (ie: point buy). Rolling in game is fine and necessary. For instance there was one game I was a bard in, went with all the social stuff, feats, skills, ect. This other guy was a sorcerer. Every time I tried to do something. "Nope nope I do that, my bonus is higher then yours." He was a total munchkin and the dm let him get away with murder, so he had a raw cha bonus that was higher then my cha bonus + any of my social skills (by a fair amount). That sorta thing.
