Zar the EscapeeZar listened to them all and sighed in desperation. He'd lost the argument against fighting altogether. At least the wizard was talking sense, trying to scare the giant away. The Orc cautioned suicide, the Lady Drow seemed to be trying to make everyone happy, and the Lady Elf was... well... no idea what she was on about. But he wasn't up on the whole magic thing, so that could be the problem.

When he spoke, he spoke to everyone but focused on the wizard, "I think if we are going to fight, or even risk a fight, then we must position a group of us behind to close the trap on the giant if he doesn't buy your glamor."

"Scaring the giant off is fine because it would allow us to pass through the cavern towards the western exit unharmed," Rugadh Faoi whispered in response to the mage. "Scaring the giant off and causing him to release his captive beforehand is even finer." She shook her head slowly. "Thus, using our magic to divert his attention sounds more promising than using our magic to intimidate him."

The drow nodded at Zar's words. The human seemed to have the right instinct for surviving the Underdark. "Those of us who are sneaky can already move forward to position themselves strategically. If Nienna can produce duck sounds somewhere in the middle of the cavern, the giant may want to investigate." Having seen Zar's expertise in sneaking back in Velkynvelve, Rugadh Faoi was about to ask him to join her in silently moving into the cavern. Albeit, something important occured to her. The humans and, in particular, Zar, were not able to see in the absolute darkness in the cavern, and sneaking with a torch in their hands would be pointless. "We need to illuminate the cavern a bit," she said turning to Nienna and Qalo. "Can you do this? A side benefit would be that it may impress the giant."

"I can produce light on an object I am holding. However, if I am to disguise myself as a Drow, then it may strike the giant as odd to see a dark elf requiring a light source. Depending on how intelligent the creature is, of course. Also, Lady Drow, Begon and I would require your aid in confronting the giant, seeing as how you're one of the few of us that speaks the language of the Underdark. Our ruse would be quite obvious if we were unable to communicate with the giant. Especially if we are to appear as a Drow scouting party, with it's half-orc warrior slave." He sighed at the suggestion of the duck call. "We want to scare the giant, not peek its curiosity. What about a duck seems intimidating to you? We want to force the creature to hand over the girl and make it think it's barely escaping with its own life."

"I'm not yet convinced that we would be intimidating enough to force the giant to release the woman," Rugadh Faoi replied doubtingly. "So why not peeking the giant's curiosity? Apparently, he is looking for an answer and the woman said something about a duck. Let us give him what he is looking for. Confusion pays off." She smiled.

"Anyway, there is a solution to your problem that a dark elf doesn't need a light source: There exist legendary magic items whose magic lets them glow. You could cast your spell on your ring or on a weapon you are carrying, making it, err, magic. Just don't blind my sensitive eyes," the bard added with a wink.

The mage rubbed his eyes with dirty palms and slowly dragged them down his face. After shaking his head for a moment, he conceded. "Fine, let us try the distraction. We will need to sneak closer to the giant, then cast your duck in the opposite direction. If we are lucky, the creature will set the girl down and make after the illusion. We must be swift though, since I don't want to be around the giant once it figures out he's been fooled. From what I know about them, an enraged giant will not stop until we are all dead."

Apparently no one knew about arcane magic so the runes scribbled on the wall were worrisome. Nienna made a calming gesture. "Perhaps we're going about this all the wrong way. It doesn't look like the woman is in immediate danger so perhaps we should watch and wait for an opportunity. After all, it has to sleep sometime."

Qalo looked behind the his companions, into the small opening in the rock wall that they just came through, then turned his attention back to the group. "While I agree that waiting until the giant drops his guard is ideal, I don't believe we have the time. We don't know when it will sleep, or even if it will need to. Though, that doesn't matter since we should not stay here for too long. We know that our former captors will come looking for us and I am certain that we are being followed. I believe our stalker to be more foe than friend. Whatever the plan, we must act quickly."

"Yes," Rugadh Faoi replied in a hushed voice, "let's act before it is too late. I am more afraid of Ilvara and her henchmen than of the giant." The dark elf leaned forward and, with a devilish expression on her face, whispered something into Nienna's ear. "I doubt that the giant's darkvision is as superior as the darkvision of a typical dark elf," the bard continued in Common. "As long as we are carrying no lights, we should be safe if we sneaked forward up to a distance of, say, 70 feet to the giant. Those of us with darkvision should take those without by the hand. So, who will join me?" Rugadh Faoi looked at her companions.

Begon snarled in relief as it seemed the planning was coming to an end. His long ears perked up as Rugadh mentioned moving forward. "Those of us with darkvision should take those without by the hand. So, who will join me?" she asked.

Begon stepped forward, "I will go...but I am not the stealthiest orc. I will try my best. Just point me where you need me to go." Begon went back to sizing up the giant. One hell of a battle was coming.

Rugadh Faoi nodded thankfully to the half-orc. Albeit she feared that he might resort to premature violence, it was reassuring to know to have Begon's prowess on their side should their plan fail.

"We won't proceed as a single stealthy group," the drow suggested in a hushed voice. "We should split up and approach the giant from different angles. Even if one group of us fails to move silently, the giant would still be mostly groping in the dark. If one of the groups has come to the conclusion that the giant knows where it is, this group can then address the giant. Remember that even then, the giant won't be able to see us."

Chapter Two: Through the Dark

The Giant in the Way

The group consensus seemed to be to try and save the woman dangling in the giant’s grip. They were, however, unsure of how to proceed. They knew hat an angered stone giant was a formidable foe, one that they would be hard pressed to defeat, and even if they did, there was no way to ensure the safety of the captive.

The plan that seemed to have the most support was to split into two groups. One stealthy trying to get close, the other being separate.

As they whispered their plans to one another the giant continued his inscrutable calculations, carving them into the very rock of the cavern.

"Tell me, female from the Dream, do you think that the green mushrooms hold the answer or those made of wood? Wood is from trees in the Dreamlands I am told and perhaps the answer is hidden there. Or perhaps they are intangible like the worms that eat the fruit?"

The giant paused then shook his head.

"Damn you voices!" he bellowed suddenly, his voice like boulders dropping from a height on a rocky floor, "Why do you demand these answers!?! The questions are confusing!"

He flopped down on the ground, his captive held tight, but seemingly unharmed, and to the surprise of the party he began to weep, large tears tracking down his when face.

OOCHi guys, thanks for sticking around. And thank you for not rising in and attacking. I’d hate to make you guys bury your characters so early....

For reference, your NPCs that are good at stealth are Sarith and Jimjar. The others much less so. They will do whatever you instruct them to do (unless you are very rude).

An arcana check on the writing might be in order...

The giants passive perception is 14 so if you try to sneak that’s your target. If you fail you can work that into your post.

If I missed any rolls let me know.

She whispered back to Ru.

She sighed since the others seemed to be dead set on a direct course with the giant. Normally stone giants could be bartered with, but this one wasn't right in the head. She looked around at the group knowing full well the power of these creatures, there was a small tribe of them in the upper caves of the mountain she called home. From time to time the druids there would trade with them and she'd spent enough time with them to learn their language. She also knew that at least one of them had found her attractive.

"Listen I have a plan, you all stay hidden no matter what." She said unbuckling her armor and handing it to Ru along with her staff and pack. "When the time is right sneak out and save the girl, I'll be able to escape on my own and meet up with you later. Just leave me a path to follow." She started moving forward letting her dress fall to the ground as she walked out into the giant's cavern. She then says something to the giant in it's own tongue once it notices her. ((Also grab her dress please.))

Rugadh Faoi
"What?" the dark elf whispered, initially not understanding what Nienna was up to when she handed her equipment to her. Only when the sun elf moved forward and let her dress fall to the ground, Rugadh Faoi suddenly got Nienna's plan. She wanted to cry: "No!", but bit herself on the lip.

Not only was Nienna's undertaking riskier than approaching and addressing the giant from out of the darkness, Rugadh Faoi thought, but also no women deserved having to demean herself this way.

The dark elf spun around, handed over the druid's equipment to Begon, whom she took by surprise, jumped over the ledge and vanished as well in the shadows by following the sun elf. Relying on her drow darkvision, she was able to stay out of sight of Nienna and the giant's while being able to see them both. She would not let the giant harm her sun elven friend in any way. Nienna might later be furious with her about her intervention, but she couldn't leave her without support.
OOCWhat (if anything at all) Rugadh Faoi will do depends on the initial reaction of the giant to the dress-less druid.

"Wait! What are you-" Qalo tried calling out to the two women, without raising alarm, but it was too late. They were gone and heading towards the creature. "Not sure what kind of advantage disrobing will bring, but I hope it works..." He then waved to Begon. "C'mon. We need to get into position to save the girl or this attempt will be for nothing." The mage did his best to move quielty towards the giant's torch lite and remain out of site.

The frustration was plain upon Begon's tusked face as he watched Nessima strip out of her clothes and set out towards the clearly addled giant. "What is she doing!" he hissed towards Rugadh. His eyes widened as the dark elf handed Nessima's clothes to him and took off as well.

Begon looked at the remaining companions and shook his head as he shrugged his shoulders. He had no idea what he should do. He felt a small measure of relief when Qalo spoke up. "C'mon. We need to get into position to save the girl or this attempt will be for nothing." Begon grunted in agreement. He took the elf's belongings and stuffed them unceremoniously in his pack and Stealth 8lumbered out after the mage. He was sure they were only going to get one chance at this. Begon hoped he would not be the one to bring down disaster upon them. "This is a really bad idea...really bad."
