Chapter Two: Through the Dark

The Fungus CavernThe return of Nienna and Rugadh was welcome. It had been a harrowing few days and the group had bonded quickly.

Begon set out to explore the cavern and took care to remain unseen by any who might be there. This did, however limit his ability to forage. There were not only vast trunks of the capped mushrooms, but other sorts. He found a grove of stalk like growths that were half as tall as him and glowed with a blue light. There were other things her grew on the ground and walls like huge shelfs, hard as rock and allowed him to climb on them. They were all wonderous but he did not know what was edible. He returned shortly with nothing to show for his trip but a sense of wonder.

Sarith looked up once he arrived and chuckled.

"Orc," he said, "No luck? Let me come next time and I can show you what is edible. I am concerned about our water supply. Ours is dwindling and most water you come across will be poisonous. Did you see any water? If not there are certain fungi which conceal water within."

As they scoped out the area Zar saw something pass across a luminous growth in the distance. It seemed like a humanoid form but was gone before he could discern more about it.

The two deep gnome siblings began making a camping spot.

Topsy, the female, spoke to Rugadh. "We know the faerzress. And it has been strange throughout the Underdark. But not all magics react to it in the same way. We have seen this. As it seems to be concentrated to far side of the cavern. If we keep watch to ensure that it doesn’t engulf us here i doubt we will have a better place to rest. And we are all tired."

It was more than any in the party had heard her speak in some time.

"I don’t know," said Jimjar. "The Drow has a point. If she can be incapacitated from casting a spell it might not be wise to rest so close to it? What say the rest of you? Regardless we need to find some food and water. We believe we are close to the Darklake but we still have days from there to Sloobubop, Shuushar’s city. And even then, we think we are close. Journeys of two days in the Underdark can easily become ones that last weeks."

OOCAnyone who has the survival skill and takes any one of Sarith, Stool, Jimjar or Rugadh with them to forage gets advantage. If you camp here I will need to know your watch schedule. Let’s assume 3 watches.

Oh, and a companion of yours, Tyrell the half elf Paladin seems to have vanished if anyone wants to talk about that.

Qalo
Qalo hardly acknowledged the returning elves and decided not to take part in the reunion. He was much more focused on securing the area so that they may rest, as he trusted Jimjar's words that this would be a taxing journey. After completing his Cast Alarm as a Ritualritual along the perimeter, the mage returned to the group to retrieve the dark-skinned gnome.

"We will try our hand at Rolled a 13 for Survivalforaging. I have a feeling our orc friend was looking for something in the form of meat, hence his lack of success." He flashed a wry smile at Begon before tapping Jimjar on the shoulder and beckoning him to follow. "If we are to make this journey a swift one, we should try and find enough food that'll last us a while. We don't know how long it'll be until we find something edible again."

Elsha

Elsha smirked when the cat transformed itself into the Elven woman she had seen come to her rescue earlier. "That's a nice trick," she commented, nodding in genuine appreciation. "And a very bold strategy." She paused while she listened to the others, resting her hand on her side out of habit. Finally, she added to the subject of food, "well, if we come up short in the foraging, I do have a few rations left in my pack... though-" Her gaze passed over the group, doing a rough count of how many souls they had. "It wouldn't go very far with a group this size."

More directly to Rugadh, she said with a slightly furrowed brow, "well, I- This may have already been talked about before we ran into each other, but I have to wonder why we don't just head up instead of to Menazarandzibandersnatch or Shuushar or DarkLake or wherever. We can't be more than a couple days from the surface - if no a couple of hours. Why are we heading across instead of up?" She demonstrated the directions with her hands, unnecessarily.

Begon

Begon rejoined the group after a decidedly non-productive foraging session. He was overjoyed to see the return of Rugadh and Nienna but he did not have it in himself to express this. He walked near to the drow woman and silently and quickly placed his hand on her shoulder and nodded.

Begon quickly turned away and reached into his backpack and grabbed the elf's equipment. He handed it to her with a slight nod of his head and turned to walk away but was stopped by a quick kiss. Begon froze where he stood and then chuckled quietly. "You're welcome," he said quietly.

Begon turned as Sarith addressed him, "Orc," he said, "No luck? Let me come next time and I can show you what is edible. I am concerned about our water supply. Ours is dwindling and most water you come across will be poisonous. Did you see any water? If not there are certain fungi which conceal water within."

Begon frowned, "My name is Begon Ugo, address my properly," he said menacingly. "I did not see much of anything, but in truth I was more interested in finding those two," he motioned to the recently returned elves.

"Thank you." Nienna said to Elsha and gave her a smile. "Fortunately everything worked out alright in the end and we're all still here." She looked around getting a look on her face like she forgot something. "Except for we're not all here, does anyone know what happened to that half elven man that was in the cage with us?" She looked back to Elsha. "Oh we have just recently escaped from drow that had imprisoned us. Fortunately, and I can't believe I'm saying fortunately to this subject, they were attacked by some sort of unnatural things. I believe I heard someone say demons. So yeah there's that. Hopefully they killed each other all off but I doubt we're that lucky." She sighed feeling weary from all that's happened.

When the subject of food came up, she spoke up to the group. "I can still sustain us with my magic, so we don't have to worry about that to much. Though if we can find something extra it never hurts." She realized something else. "Oh speaking of. When was the last time you ate Elsha?" She rummaged around in her sack and brought out a big leaf that had wrapped inside of it several cherries that were left over from this morning and picked one out and gave it to Elsha. "This is enough nourishment to sustain a person for an entire day, along with some small measure of magical healing. It'll be good until tomorrow morning sometime, so eat it before then please."

On the matter of camp. She didn't want this turning into an argument between the two women. "Perhaps if we split the difference and camped at the edge of the cave by the entrance? That way we're away from the faerzress.." She said that word slowly since it was strange to her. "But we don't have to go very far." She looked around to see if people would be okay with that settlement.

"Thank you Begon" ((Is that his first and last name? She'd say it the proper way if it was one name like Ru's)) "The sentiment is much appreciated." She said giving him a smile and hoping to turn their attention away from any sort of hostilities that might crop up between them.

Rugadh Faoi

Rugadh Faoi
"There's a slight problem with just heading up," Rugadh Faoi replied to Elsha. "The tunnels and caverns of the Underdark form a very complicated three-dimensional system. There are nearly no straight ways. Even now as we are heading to the Darklake, we are more going in a serpentine line in all dimensions than straightforward. Likewise, we cannot expect that there is a quick route to the surface from here."

The beautiful dark elf looked up where the Lands Above must be. "And even if there was a quick route to the surface, none of us would know. Neither you surface dwellers nor us Underdark citizens. Because, why would we be interested in knowing how to get to a world that is hostile to us."

Elsha noticed that Rugadh Faoi's expression darkened for a very brief moment. "No, we have to reach a larger settlement where we can either acquire up-to-date maps — the shape of many of the Underdark's connections is in constant change — or where we can engage a guide. Lastly, many of us don't want to the surface but have their homes in these larger settlements."

Rugadh Faoi smiled at Elsha as the human's verbal error came to her mind. "The name of the most splendid city in the Underdark is Menzoberranzan, by the way. As I have already told the others — always worth a visit. You can even skimp on the return ticket, I guess!"

When Begon, their half-orc companion, walked near her and placed his hand on her shoulder, Rugadh Faoi slowly turned her face in his direction, returning his nod. Words weren't necessary.

How much has changed during the last days, the drow thought to herself. Or is it I who has changed? Had a half-orc dared touch me yesterday, I wouldn't have wanted to be in his skin. She shivered inwardly. Was she still herself?

Rugadh Faoi motioned to the three deep gnomes and to Nienna to gather. Alternating between Common and Undercommon to act as an interpreter between Topsy and Turvy on the one hand and Nienna on the other hand, the drow female said: "It is not that only I can become incapacitated by casting a spell; in principle every one of us could as long as we don't know much about the effects of the faerzress here." She glanced briefly at the human mage who was already casting spells. "So if we suddenly saw a fireball lightning up where Qalo had stood a second before, we would have witnessed a wild magic effect, also a possible result when mortal magic comes into contact with the magical radiation."

She brushed away the hair from her face. "Yet, I haven't heard of any benefit of camping in the fungus chamber near the radiation. For rest, each of the tunnels leading from this chamber is at least as good — and is not magically tainted. So unless you like to gamble — without profit —, the advice of staying here has no basis in fact."

The drow raised her eyebrows. Why do we have to discuss all this when the facts are so evident? she thought. Are the fungi or is the faerzress already influencing their minds?
OOCRugadh Faoi is willing to accompany anyone foraging to grant Advantage on the Survival check.

"I guess that makes sense," concluded Elsha, not exactly sure she had followed everything the Drow woman had told her but figuring there were well thought-out reasons why getting to the surface was a harder proposition than it might seem. "I hadn't thought about some of us not wanting to travel to the surface," she added, with a glance at Stool.

She accepted the cherry offered to her by Nienna and couldn't resist eating it right then. A smile and a 'yum' compiled a thanks to the Elven woman. "Well..." she sucked the juice off her fingers. "I'm not very good at foraging, so I guess I'll stay with the group. Uhm... is anybody injured? Now that we have a moment to breath, I could help with that..."

She returned the young woman's smile. "You're welcome, and I'm as well as can be expected, y'know giving the circumstances. Thank you." Elsha seemed sweet, Nienna hoped that she would be able to maintain that sweetness being exposed to the horrors down here.

"Instead of debating about it longer, could we just please err on the side of caution? I'm sure we're all very tired, I am at least, and need to get some rest and move on before any drow scouting parties or whatever come after us. Please." She looked around the group and hoped they decided to not make it into a whole thing, cause truth was she couldn't go on for much longer.

She moved over to the safest looking area (with the flattest floor as well) brought out her bedroll and quickly set it up. If no one had anything else to say to her she was out inside of a few minutes (though she slept like a cat) and around four hours later she awoke from her reverie and took over for whoever was on watch at the time and thanked that person for keeping watch over them.

"I don't know anything about magic. I know about this!" Begon growled as he slapped his great axe across his chest. "If you want to sleep next to the mushrooms go for it. Not me though. I saw what the faerzress did to Rugadh...up on the bridge. She was lost and helpless. I want nothing to do with it."

Begon stomped his way to the side chamber and set up his bedroll. "I will take a later watch. I need my rest."

Zar the IlluminatedZar listened as everyone spoke. Whether they slept near the mushrooms or not mattered as much to him as what Elminster had for lunch. But if the magic users couldn’t wield their magic, it would behoove them to move off, camp in a tunnel. They rarely came across enemies, at least so far, and so they were likely to be able to rest elsewhere in peace, though Zar would be sad to leave the light of this cavern behind. Of course, its very luminescence was likely to attract attention.

Perhaps because he had thought ‘attention’, Zar saw movement on their periphery, a humanoid maybe.

How far the new creature was or what he was, Zar did not know, but he couldn’t listen to much more before he interrupted. They spoke briefly about the mushrooms, their Lady Drow making an impassioned plea from fear and past experience. As the Orc moved to walk off, Zar spoke. He didn't show by eyes or movement where he'd seen the humanoid,
Dice Perception:
d20+8 (6)+8 Total = 14
but he scanned the whole area nonchalantly to try and discern any other potential enemies.

“Before we decide on the usefulness of our current and temporary abode, it might interest you all to know that we are not alone. In the distance, at least one humanoid is moving. Whether he’s fleeing us, watching us, or part of an organized ambush I know not.”

Rugadh Faoi
All at once, Rugadh Faoi was all ears when Zar mentioned a humanoid that was apparently preferring to stay in the shadows. The question of what the best sleeping place was had become secondary.

She moved toward the human and waved Sarith, her fellow drow, nearer. "Do you know the general direction of the creature who is trying to hide from us," she spoke softly in Common to Zar and repeated her words in Undercommon so that Sarith was able to understand her as well. "As one of Ilvara's former warriors, Sarith should be able to cast a faerie fire on the region where you perceived the movement, thereby illuminating all hidden creatures."

Rugadh Faoi looked at Sarith. "So, would you, please?"

Begon froze mid-step when Zar mentioned that they were being followed. His fingers immediately began to shake as he struggled to control the overwhelming urge to rush towards the unknown figure. He slowly and deeply breathed in and out as he tried to maintain his self-control.

He slowly turned his head to address Zar, "Where...are...they!" Begon growled as he slowly adjusted his grip on his axe.

Nienna cursed softly at the talk of someone stalking them. She hoped that it wasn't the giant she didn't have the energy for another go around with him. She pushed herself up and made her way over to the small group in what she hoped looked like a "come to bed" sort of manner. Her mind started to drift as she thought about how pleasant that would feel with everyone all together. About half way there she snapped back, shook her head, and chided herself about focusing.

"Perhaps we can set a trap of some sort?" She whispered to the others. "Did you see any features Zar? It was a male? Was it a drow?"

Chapter Two: Through the Dark

The Fungus Cavern

There didn’t seem to be a clear concensus about where to camp, in the chamber, as Sarith and Stool lrefered, or out of it as Rugadh suggested. They close a middle ground and began o set up camp coser to the edge of the chamber, as far as possible from faerzress.

Elsha made her introductions to the ladies who had lured away the giant, and was informed about the nature of the Underdark and the difficulty of getting out.

"If you are heading for the surface," Jimjar added to the conversation, "There are only a few who can help you. The Duregar have ways but they are protective of them. You might be able to find a guide in their city. It’s on the Darklake so we are heading generally in which right direction for that. My fellow Deepgnomes have some people who might know, but, again, the trick will be convincing any to help you. The Drow of course but they will just enslave you if you get close. Isn’t that right, Ru?"

We have scouts, Stool piped up with a cloud of spores. They travel far and tell stories of an over world. If I get home I can introduce you. You seem nice.

Zar brought the group’s attention to the figure he had seen flitting by. He did not see it well enough to judge what it was, but knew where he saw it and the direction it went.

Sarith smirked at Rugadh and cast the spell she wanted in the space Zar indicates. There was nothing here but a growth of fungus that resembled a cosp of tall reeds.

OOCIf you want to try to find the creature you can do a survival roll to track if you have the skill. If you take Sarith you get advantage. Your goal is 18. If you meet or beat that you will find a trail. If not there are markings of passage but are quickly lost.

Begon growled in frustration as he noticed everyone looking at each other and nobody moving. They could not risk leaving whoever or whatever was luring behind them. The minute they dared take some rest a calamity would befall them all. "I will go and try to loop around this thing, whatever it is. Sarith, your coming with me." He fixed him with a stare that communicated that it was not a request and headed out in the direction Zar had indicated.

He had not traveled far when he was able to tracking = 18 pick up the barely discernible track, scuff marks on the stone. He bent his huge frame low and placed his hand near the track and motioned Sarith forward. Begon shrugged his shoulders and gave a questioning glance towards the drow.
