Reaching out mentally, the warlock connects with Lux, still hidden in his cloak. Lux, which is he? Was he sent by your Lady, or some other damned fiend that I don’t know about? He looks about, taking stock of the Abbot's attitude before continuing, “Why don’t you move along before my friend here gets tired of your name calling?” Last edited by mountainbound; Jul 5th, 2019 at 05:39 PM. |

"Oh, you think because you know the name of Fierna that I am going to quiver in my boots? Ha, I laugh at the notion. Fierna and I are not enemies, though I wouldn't call us friends either." The man wasn't going to make the first move, but his eyes had a piercing gaze to them, giving no question to the fact that he was waiting for even the smallest twitch of aggression to move into action. After another puff on his pipe, his calculated speech continued. "I think it is the three of you who need to move along. Your work here is clearly done, as is the Abbots. I have my own purpose to remain, and none of us are doing each other a favor if I have to spill your worthless guts out on the ground out here in public."
Under his arm, Oren could feel that Lux was really trying to break free, and getting more and more uncomfortable every second. He wasn't trying to break free in the direction to flee though, but rather to towards the Incubus. On top of that, eyeing up the Abbot, it was pretty clear to Oren that the man was in no shape to actually fight. His bravado was admirable, but it was more likely to get him killed than anything else if violence did break out.

Thankfully, Gallindan was in Winter. The fiend's taunts were not enough to raise his ire. He sneered back at the beast. "What IS your purpose in this sanctuary? The Abbot has a flock to lead. I suspect you do not - not here."

Possibilities thrashed through Oren's mind, but the ex-soldier turned warlock was unused to having to calculate quickly. He was sure of one thing: the demon could not remain in town unchecked.
"Whatever you're scheming, and whoever you're in cohoots with, you can't stay here. We have enough fiends to manage. Look, here's one loyal to me now," he says casually. And with that Oren releases the his tight elbow lock on Lux, letting the imp go where he wished. I hope he stays loyal. No longer needing to reign in Lux, he completes a quick spell of safeguarding, hoping Gallindan is as battle ready as he looks. "Abbot, go to Frath and have him bring Oliver here. Now!" Turning back to the fiend he says: "In the name of the elder powers, we're here to send you back to hell!" Last edited by mountainbound; Jul 21st, 2019 at 02:17 PM. |

Oren was ready to push things to action. The dark-haired man was waiting for just such a twitch and reached for something in his cloak at the same time. Gallindan could sense the tension building, and had an inner desire to slay the fiend. The Abbot was a little delirious, and Lux, still invisible, lunged towards the men's common foe.

Before anyone could move, with near lightning speed two daggers flew toward Oren and Gallindan. The dagger thrown at Oren was a near miss, sailing by his ear. Had Oren much hair on his head, he probably would have lost some of it. The second dagger was more on point, striking Gallindan in the forearm. The cut hurt, but the Paladin could feel the sting of a poison enter his bloodstream.

Gallindan was quick to action, but not quick enough. Even as he began to move, he was struck by the thrown dagger with surprising force. He immediately had second thoughts about this fight. But perhaps if the imp improbably stayed true, they had a chance. In any event, his life's mission was to stand between life and chaos, and he didn't take that lightly. He strode forward to close the gap with the incubus, and lashed out with his glaive. The blow struck true, and Gallindan Adding divine smiteyelled as the blade cut through, "Let the light shine!". Inspired by his momentary success, he quickly reversed the momentum of his weapon and jabbed at the incubus with the butt end. He grinned as the attack clearly caught the fiend by surprise.

Gallindan knew how to add some extra divine power to his strikes, and did so with brutal efficiency. Both his blows did not seem to have their full impact, but the radiant light that they seared with on contact caused the fiend to scream in pain and rage. Urthwin turned to run, as Oren had instructed, just as Oren cast a spell of protection on himself.
"Fekish, you back-stabbing, worthless pile of rat dung!" A small voice cried out from behind the fiend, before Oren or Gillindan could see where it was coming from. Oren knew the voice well, but it was new to Gallindan. "I told you I would repay you one of these days." From the man's shoulder, a small dark form appeared, with a barbed tail sticking into the fiend's neck. The Fiend snarled at Lux, doing his best to ignore the little imp. Instead, the Incubus turned his attention to the greatest threat. "Siding with other devils are you? Are you sure you are on the right side of this fight?" There was magic behind his question, which attempted to charm the paladin.

Gallindan was surprised that the imp seemed to be on their side. Or rather, not on the side of the incubus. He thanked the Old Gods that fiends so rarely worked well together. Then the demon turned to him, and the elf felt the waves of magic roll over him. For a moment, he was lost. But his fey blood rebelled at being controlled, and he shook off the spell. "I stand against you, fiend. That puts me in the light. Go back to hell!" He lashed out again with his glaive, and missed badly. But somehow the incubus was still unprepared for the jab with the haft of the weapon, and Gallindan unleashed the last of his holy energies.

Things unfolded quickly. Oren was surprised to see how fast his new friend sprang into battle, unleashing an explosion of divine power as he stood against the fiend. Even Lux seemed a worthy battler, bravely stinging the Incubus in the neck. The warlock was impressed.
Oren was no great fighter, but his pact with higher powers gave him some otherworldly insight, and when the Incubus spoke his threat, he could hear the words laced with magic. If he wins over Gallidan’s mind, he wins his sword, and this will go badly for me, he thinks. Without wasting another moment, the warlock summons up the psychic power gifted to him the the Elder Ones and sends a blast of energy at the fiend. Then, closing the distance, he flanks the man, hoping to give Gallidan some edge, or even find an opening where he could let his dagger taste demon flesh. “You’ve run out of chances fiend, it’s time you stopped causing trouble in Oakcrest!” |

Oren threat fell on deaf ears. As his Eldritch Blast landed on the fiend, the mand crumpled over, the blast severing his spine. He fell to the ground, and as he did so, his form changed from that of the attractive man with dark hair, to one of a purple-skinned fiend with hideous features, wing, claws, and fangs. It's last gambit to charm Gallindan had failed, and with it, it's chance to win this fight.
Lux stood on its back, tail still impaled in the fiend's neck. "Take that you backstabbing, scum-sucking waste of a soul. I told you, you would pay what you did to me, and you can tell Belial to kiss it!" The little devil seemed pretty smug about the fallen foe, before taking quick stock of the situation. Lux then looked up, and seeing Gallindan, realized his own situation and peril. Quickly he darted behind Oren's legs. "You won't let him hurt me, will you old buddy?"

Gallindan paused to catch his breath. He had used every ounce of his divine energy in that brief skirmish, and he was tired. He glared at the imp, but made no move to threaten him. "You have earned mercy for the moment, imp. But it may well be temporary."
He knelt next to the incubus's corpse, looking for anything of interest. As he knelt, he said, "Well done, Oren. We have won an important battle here. Let us hope the beast has not desecrated the church beyond repair." |
