The lead Knight, despite being the target was not the first foe to rush. Rather, he gave directions to his followers. "Keith, Sarek, and Rodger; get those two off the ridge. The rest of you on horses, flank around their backside. And you my boys, run these fools down!" Like well-trained soldiers, the men took off on their assigned tasks. Two of the horsemen rode north to try and get a better spot to get on the high ground of the ridge, while the third charged and spurred his horse to leap up the hill. He stuck the landing, but it took all of the rider's efforts to hold on, and perform the maneuver, as he landed between Adelaide and Kerwin. The other three mounts stuck out with great speed to go around the south side of the church. Meanwhile, five men charged in simultaneously at Gallindan, Marcus and Oren. There was no question that they would try to flank the trio, but for the moment they could only get so far. Not to mention, moving in that close came with a cost. All five men were instantly assaulted by the specter of Hakkouth, that Marcus had summoned as a guardian spirit. Two of the knights on the outside edges of the rush seemed to take the worst of the guardian's wrath. The one that was the furthest north had the unfortunate luck to fly into Gillindan's glaive, which landed a deep critical blow across his chest and caused him to howl in pain, as he was nearly going in two. The lead knight, stayed back to mend his own wounds for the moment, as his men did the initial dirty work. His hands called on the anti-paladin powers he possessed to close some of the scrapes and cuts caused by the flying bench and eldritch blasts a moment earlier. The heavily wounded knight retaliated against Gillindan, using his flank to swing twice, wicked arches of a curved bald connected both times with Gillindan's armor, which, fortunately for him, stood firm and deflected the blows. The other Knight, though not having such an advantage had more luck in getting around Gillindan's defenses, and landed two blows on the Eladrin, one slicing deep into his arm, and the other into his leg. Marcus had the focus of the other three advancers. Swings deflected of his shield and armor, but a few blades managed to slice him as well, though he seemed to act as though no real damage had been done just yet. Oren could see some thin trickles of blood coming from Marcus' fresh wounds that he had indeed been struck, even if he was ignoring the pain for the moment. The tactic worked well enough for Marcus, that despite the blows, his spiritual guardian stayed around to continue harassing the advancers. Marcus' hammer glowed with crackling energy, a retaliation was now due. The hammer slammed into one foe, and causing an explosion that knocked the man backward, and left him prone on the ground. Another heavy blow landed on the Knight next to the previous and again crackled with strong energy that left his target's armor dented and scorched. Inside the church, Daybreak spotted the three knights circling around, through one of the small chappel's windows. "They won't have an easy time making it that way," she assured the terrified Isabella. "Watch.." Daybreak stretched her had out, and called to the seeds of thistles and thorns that laid dormant in the ground. Instantly, they spring to life, reaching up with thick spikes that tore at the legs and hoofs of the quickly moving Knights. The men were then trapped, with a decision to make. Ride their horses out of the thicket, which would likely cause the deaths of the mounts, or dismount and brave the spikes themselves. "How did you do that?" Isabella wondered out loud, her curiosity peaked now and the powers Daybreak seemed to possess. There would hopefully be time for explanations later, if the managed to live through this. Hearing the orders given to circle around the back of the chapel, Oren realizes he wasn't sure if there was a back door to the building. They could lose everything because of a simple oversight like that. He curses. With Marcus' hammer knocking the men back, and Gallindan's formidable ability to deal and heal damage, Oren decides the paladins can cover the door -- he needs to be sure the building is secure on all sides.
Calling on the powers of his patron, the warlock takes a breath, bending for just a second before he leaps upward, suspended by nothing except the will of the Mountain God! He sails to the bell tower to gain cover and grabs hold of the weather-beaten shingles of the small roof to stop his flight. His eyes are instantly drawn down and left to the area behind the church, dreading to see the knights hauling Isabelle out of the building. A smile passes his lips to see a mass of vines writhing around the horses, the riders shouting at each other trying to decide if they should dismount. Daybreak, well done. Distracted as they are, Oren takes care to move stealthily and prepares to surprise the knights from above. Last edited by mountainbound; May 17th, 2023 at 11:22 AM. |

Gallindan knew he didn't want to be flanked. He spun around and threw the flurry of his attacks at the evil knight who as circling around his backside. Only his first strike drew blood but infused with a holy smite, it was enough to get the job done. A scream of death penetrated the air, for the first time that night, as the figure dropped into a huddled ball on the floor. Meanwhile, Oren took to the skies, and landed on the top of the bell tower, getting a view of what was happening on both sides of the building. To his relief, he remembered that the small structure did not have a rear door, only windows. The riders were likely just going around the building the long way, rather than trying to find an entrance in.
Up on the hillside, Adelaide's blade did not hesitate to meet the advancing rider. In a blur of action, three slices aimed at the rider, the first and last made contact. Adelaide's second blow hit with a BOOM! that was sure to shake the roofs of houses in the not-so-far-off village. The rider's horse kept running forward, even as he flew off, over Kerwin's head, and landed prone on the ground next to the Alchemist. A grunt indicated that the man was in great pain, but still alive. Kerwin, shocked to see the savageness of his allies' attacks, focused on his own survival, and cast a spell that created multiple images of himself. The Leader of the horrific invaders took a quick view of the scene, before deciding on a tactical decision. Marus was protected by spirit guardians, and Gillindan had a long reach with his glaive. He chose to circle around, outside the reach of either, nearing his fallen henchmen. "Your sacrifice will not be in vain brother, rise and fight again!" With the command, a black tendril of energy reached out from the Lantern and possessed the fallen body that Gillindan had just slaughtered. With a deathly moan, the body, broken and bloodied, stood back up. Its movements were no longer natural, as true life had left its limbs. But, under the command of necromantic magic, it continued to fight on. As if horrified by the unholy magic, the spirit of Hakkouth lashed out violently at the cult members of the Cloak of Aramok. Even the newly formed zombie was not spared his wrath, as he zipped around, searing them with radiant energy. It did not deter them from their dedication to following orders though, and the Knights fought back. Marcus was hit twice, the second blow caused him to lose his concentration, and as a result, his Spiritual Guardian disappeared. Gillindan found himself being hit by more blows and slices as well, as to more slashes cut him deeply. On the south side of the church, two of the riders forced their horses to push through the thorn ticket, summoned by Daybreak. It was a costly decision, for the animals, who barely made it across, before they were permanently maimed. Leaving their mortally wounded horses behind, the Riders continued to rush around on foot. The third rider decided to disobey orders, and circled back around from the direction he had come, and instead came face to face with Marcus. On the Hillside, the Knight who had been discounted stood up, and shoot his head. He wasn't sure why he was seeing double, or triple. Lazily he swung at the mage once, missing wide. The second time, he hit! Or, rather, hit something that went POOF!, as soon as his blade sliced through it. One of Kerwin's images disappeared. The other two riders spurred their horses into action, dashing around the bend, and barring down on Adelaide. They flanked her on either side, but had rushed so fast to get there, that they were not prepared to attack just yet. Inside the church, an argument was starting. "We should help them!" Isabella cried out, seeing Marcus and Gilliindan surrounded by foes. She started to take a step to the door, holding firmly to the broom she had been handed only a few moments earlier. Daybreak reached out an arm to stop her. "We will do what we can from here, but you are not stepping out of this church," Daybreak insisted. Meanwhile, the Druid changed her own spell's focus, letting the thick blanket of thorns behind the church wither out. Instead, her magic called a beam of light, from the Moon, to shine down, enveloping the lead Knight with the Lantern. Marcus unleashed how own return volley of crushing blows. His hammer struck the first Knight in front of him, and like Gillindan's blow, was infused with holy energy. Even the shield and armor of the man gave way to the weight of the blow, and bent, leaving a thick imprint of Marcus' hammer. "Let's hope that one stays down..." he shouted towards Gillindan, now knowing exactly what kind of magic was used to raise the Zombie behind that had rejoined the fight. Seeing both sides of the battle, Oren knows that Marcus is taking the brunt of the assault. He pushes off of the decrepit bell tower, dragon scale cloak whipping behind him in the night breeze, and hovers above the church roof. The warlock can only shudder in horror as the leader of the knights zombifies one of his own men, cruelly twisting life and death in an unholy abuse of power.
"No, you piece of filth," Oren addresses the head knight from above, realizing that the man never said his name, "I know I'm on the right side more than ever. Go back to where you came!" With that he summons forth a barrage of psychic energy, aiming to knock as many opponents away from his friends, giving Gallindan and Marcus a moment's tactical reprieve. A trend was starting as Kerwin noted that the leader of this foul cult needed to be neutralized sooner rather than later. Three magic blasts of energy screeched toward the group's leader, while the other two targeted the mountless knight that had just smashed one of his images. All five bolts struck. To the leader, the blasts seemed like a minor annoyance. To the man standing in front of the multiple images of Kerwin, the two bolts proved deadly.
Kerwin's spell of haste was still coursing through Adelaide's veins, and she was going to make good use of it. Two slashes of her sword nearly tore the life from one mounted rider, and left him completely unable to withstand the bash of Adelaide's shield that sent him flying off his mount. Like the previous rider she had dismounted, the horse took off running, leaving the man laying on the ground, wondering if it was worth getting back up. Next, the Paladin tore a patch from her cloak and put it on the ground. The effect was just as she had hoped, as the horse, along with its rider, instantly tumbled down to the suddenly opened pit, and landed with a hard thud. A cracking sound echoed up, as one of the horse's legs broke on impact. Oren continued to fly above the church and sent out a Psionic Blast to help give Marcus some breathing room. Marcus had to duck when he saw what Oren was about to do, and did so just in time to avoid getting caught in the blast. The spell proved devastating. The closest cult member was slammed into the ground and joined the ranks of fallen knights that evening. The rider on the horse seemed to miss most of the blast, reacting to twist out of the way, upon reading Marcus' body language to do the same. The third was also knocked back, and skidded along the ground, ending nearly at the feat of the Knight with the red lantern. Gallindan needed a moment of reprieve and used his fey ancestor to step away from the heated part of the frey. The moon-beam lit knight didn't seem to be intimidated by the move, but it did give Gillindan a moment to heal himself, and ready his glaive for striking at anyone that got close. The beam of light Daybreak had called down started to sear the skin of the Cult Leader and caused him to step out of its range, for a moment, towards the entrance to the church. He looked at his subordinate, lying on the ground and pointed towards Gallindan. As expected, a glaive lashed out as soon as he got close, moments after getting to his feat, that removed his head. Predictably, the other Knights moved in to surround Marcus, who did his best to defend himself against the barrage of blows that just kept landing. Flanked between the Zombie and the last mounted rider, several blows brought Marcus down to one knee. To those who saw it, they were not sure how he was still alive. But, the stubborn Paladin gritted through the pain, during out how to best keep the enemies busy while his allies widdled down their numbers. From around the side of the church, the two circling nights dashed towards the front door of the structure, having seen who was inside. Up on the hill, the last two knights facing Adelaide and Kerwin had some tough decisions to make. The first, getting to his feat, decided it was time to flee. He got to his feet, and ran as far as he could away, towards the town, where he hoped to find somewhere to hide. The other, jumping off the back of his lame mount, struggled to get out of the pit Adelaide had placed beneath. He managed to do so, take a step forward, and swung his sword in defiance. To his surprise, he managed to land a blow on the fiery paladin, and he regained a bit of confidence. "I see you..." The lead Knight called out to Oren, flying in the air. He pointed a finger at Oren, and a bolt of light flew out. It was guided directly to Oren, and hit the Warlock with radiating energy that burned his skin, and caused him to light up like a torch. Daybreak spotted the knights that were working towards the Church entrance. Although she wanted to help in the battle outside, she knew her priorities were to protect Isabella. She moved her Moonbeam towards the entrance of the building, making it a painful prospect for anyone to pass through of they wanted to get inside. She then moved to brace the front door. Isabella, continued to watch the Druid in action, memorized by her abilities. Marcus knew he wasn't going to last long at the rate things were going. He had to let his offense down for a moment, to heal his own wounds, much like Gillindan had done. With most of his wound closed, he held his position, waiting to see what played out next. This battle was not a total loss, but he knew it could easily still go either way. Enemies K<x> - Knight on Foot. AC 15. K1 is holding the lantern KH<x> - Knights on Horses. Gritting his teeth against the intense heat from the bolt, Oren masters his pain, keeping a firm grip on his mind so that he doesn't succumb to the fear and burning. He uses his cloak to deflect some of the bolt, and then whips it around him to put out any flames. He sees Gallindan fighting the leader next to Marcus, and that Kerwin seems to be casting something to keep the two at the door occupied. Sensing the leader is the biggest threat, he floats just above the rooftop and sends two bolts of his own back at the lantern holder, hoping to take him out one and for all!
