"If you have the skills, lend a hand with the steering and the paddling. Having an extra pair of skilled hands should help speed us along much better, and we can set off right away!"

Harper smiled and nodded her assent to the Toaddart, and set about looking across the pad for a proper spot to help with the Water Vehicles Check : 8rowing. Finally settling on on a position near the front of the craft, the sailor turned explorer looked briefly overhead, curious to Survival Check : 16determine the time... 'That is, if the solar cycle here, was anything similar to what it had been back on Faerun? She wondered to herself as she began to do her best to help get them all on the way to meet the King at Rapploc.

Well this was all going swimmingly, Fledidi thought, and with a bit of luck nobody would literally be required to swim! The fairy watched as bigger folks, which was all of them, got to work preparing for departure on this unusually buoyant Lilly pad or whatever it was.

Vehicles? Fledidi had never bothered or cared too much for them, aside from catching the odd lift in a cart before now. What a horrible thing it must be, to not be able to hover wherever you wanted to go. Anyway, with a few high pitched grunts like those a tennis player might make, she dragged her backpack over to Cadmun's side.

"Hey buddy! Remember me?"

She scanned his reaction for traces of fear, horror, amusement or friendliness.

"Can you look after my bag, please? I bought it as a bundle, a lot, thinking that would be a discounted price, right? Well... I was wrong! So... if you can find anyone who wants like a whole ten torches, or takes pleasure in carting fifty average sized human feet of rope around, be my guest."

With the sound of a buzzing insect, which hopefully wouldn't get her eaten by any giant frogs, Fledidi then began to hover a little bit in the air. Just enough to get her feet off the ground.

"Friends, I'm not much of a sailor or anything, but I can do this for as long as I can manage, and it will save you the weight."

Yep. A whole seventy seven pounds saved from the vessel's ballast! Oh, in exchange for over eighty pounds of cargo, in the form of her bag of gear...
OOCFledidi will entrust Cadmun with her stuff, but will keep her frisbee, dagger, spell focus, gold pouch and trinket on her person.

Leonora
right-aligned image

Leonora nodded in gratitude at Brogg's explanation. A few hours was doable, although she feared sir Roderick had already moved on in search of other survivors. Still, visiting the place he was last seen was the first step in finding the headstrong lord. 'Thank you, again,' she smiled. 'We would gladly accept your offer of transportation, then.'

She looked at the others. Now that there was nothing she could do to hasten their arrival at Raplocc, Leonora's sense of urgency finally began to die down, allowing her to take stock of her situation. 'I am sorry,' she offered, shaking her head. 'How are all of you? Any cuts, bruises or the like? Are you well enough to travel?'

Once underway, having made sure her traveling companions were all in good health, Leonora took her place on the pad next to Harper, Help action!studying the Tiefling's steering of their vessel closely. Unfortunately, there was little she could offer in the way of advice- Leonora had some skill with traveling the forests, but the half-elf wasn't accustomed to this marsh-like terrain, nor the strange vessel or the rather flexible oar, which were so far removed from what she was accustomed to. 'You're doing great,' the half-elf finally smiled, having little to offer beyond words of encouragement. 'I think I saw you working as part of the crew, back on the ship which carried us... Well, here,' the half-elf said, gesturing about her. 'Have you been working as a sailor for a long time?'

Kraghbar al-Gruun
left-aligned image

"More cuts than you can shake a dune wyrm's tail at, fancy lady!" Kraghbar actually seemed to swell with a bit of pride at this fact as he flexed his exposed arm, stretching out the multitude of scars which adorned the limb. "The Sultan may've ended up bein' a jerk, but lookit all the action I got to see! Coulda died happy, but you know how revolutions go. One day yer just doin' your job, the next most of your kin are rottin' in the dungeons." The orc's face fell instantly, the memories seeming to douse whatever good mood he had been able to conjure for himself in the moment.

"Got no new lumps though, just the old ones. And the berries should hold the old stomach over till we get to some real grub." Seeing Leonora help Harper steer the lily pad brought a confused look to the orc's face as he attempted to make sense of the action. "Sorry, goat-lady, boatin's not my style. First time I've ever seen so much water was when I took this here job, then the water tried to eat me... actually, it did eat me! It ate all of us! Gotta say, I always figured ending up in somethin' else's belly would be more unpleasant like, but those were some tasty berries. Guess we're lucky it's got a big tummy, eh?"

Fledidi's hovering form then caught the orc's attention, as her stated goal to save the transport weight seemed at odds with her very being.

"Bug-lady, if this here boat isn't already sinkin' after I've got my behind restin' on it, I don't think you're gonna be makin' all that big a change floatin' on them goss-him-her wings. Methinks I'm gonna be takin' a nap, seein' as I'm useless in the water. Maybe anybody else feelin' just as useless should do the same, eh?"

The orc then proceeded to make himself comfortable for the journey ahead, thoughts of the imminent banquet putting him at ease as the troupe flowed across the river.

Cadmun
left-aligned image
Cadmun looked about to start on another barrage of inquiries when a meaty orcish mitt clamped down on his shoulder and a handful of berries were shoved into his face. “Oh! Thank you, I must admit I skipped lunch earlier.” And breakfast…and probably dinner the previous night. He was just so busy! At any rate the scholar paused in his scribbling long enough to gratefully accept a berry when he finally noticed he recognized all these people milling about.

“Ah-ha! Good to see you all made it! Quite a terrible storm wasn't it? Never seen the ocean boil like that...or...well...seen the ocean at all really.” The scrawny scholar gave a cheerful smile, especially once he recognized the fae friend he’d made on their trip. …They’d all likely been victims to Cadmun’s inquisitive nature at one time or another, but Fledidi alone had cheerfully indulged the young scholar’s curiosity willingly! And for that, Cadmun was more than willing to hold the fairy’s bags. “Well certainl-oomph!”

Alas, between Fledidi’s luggage and his own possessions Cadmun found himself quite overburdened. “Erg…not a problem…at all!” Nevertheless he’d bravely shoulder on. Though his mobility was limited, he could still assist using he's learned of the natural world in his studies to help navigate as they sallied forth.

It appeared that Fledidi might have overestimated young Cadmun's strength. The fairy was still learning about these human folks, and the latest lesson was that tallness, a height almost double the fey's might not equate to a doubling up of lifting power. She chuckled at first, thinking that the fellow was just joking about, but then it dawned on her that that pack of hers, seriously was heavy.

"I'd rather not see water like that ever again, actually! But no worries, guess what, now we're going on a swamp-voyage! What could possibly go wrong, eh?"

Ok, watching him move the luggage was becoming more painful, and the nickname she'd just come up with for him, "Caddy", would totally need to be re-thought. She buzzed over a little closer though, hoping to speak softly.

"I'm praying that this King lives in something like hamlet, village or... oh, what about a big city or something? If he does, I'm sure we'll be able to offload the heavy bits."

She mindlessly scratched the side of her neck then, thinking about the predicament further.

"What about Mister Orc there? He looks like he could carry a few mules on his shoulders, right? Let's be all friendly like, and see if... you know... he can be trusted... to not try and eat me... and carry my bag for a little while once we get there? Oh, it's not that I don't think you can do it! Oh no, I just expect that a curious fellow like you, is probably going to be inclined to want to... collect some foreign books and things? I don't want to be a burden."

Fledidi dared to move in closer to Kraghbar, who looked like he was preparing for a nap.

"Hello! My name is Fledidi." She wanted to accentuate that she wasn't to be called "bug lady", but going about that in a direct manner just didn't feel right. Too risky! Big people. Strange cultures. Huge biceps. Those were folks you were best not to try to anger.

"A big strong fellow like you, I'm sure you're far from useless! That looks like some pretty serious kit you've brought along."

She jabbed a finger at his armaments.

"I bet you can really lift, like, a lot."

Yes, butter him up. Keep the options open, but learn what you can...

Strange New Worlds

Harper eyed the Half-Elf, 'Leonora' she thought she had been called? Who had been glued to Lord Roderick's side for the entire journey, as she approached and attempted to make peace and small talk. "Have you been working as a sailor for a long time?"

Harper let out an amused harrumph at the question. Though she did appreciate the attempt at getting to know her strange bedfellows, now that home seemed so far away. "Aye, all my life... As the story goes, I was found stowed away on a ship as a mere babe. My body wrapped in an old sail for warmth and to keep my modesty intact... You know, from my bits being on display? I grew up on ships, 'learning the ropes' as it were firsthand. And wherever my heart wanted to go? There was always a vessel to be found that was headed in that direction."

Harper momentarily got a distant look in her eyes, as she let herself be carried away by the memories of her youth. But as a slight wake gently rocked the leaf, the movement of the water brought her back to the present. "Freedom and cost, Mistress Leonora, that's the life of a Sailor... Freedom to go wherever you want, earn a little coin for your belly, and your bed. But Umberlee always takes her cut... And if you don't give your tithes? Well you just might end up in all sorts of strange places..." Harper looked around the swamp with a smirk "Wonder who didn't pay this time...?"

Kraghbar al-Gruun

"Eh? Er, yeah, I guess. Lifted loadsa heavy things in my time." Though now seated much more casually on the naturally grown vessel, Kraghbar was just shy of nodding off as he addressed Fledidi through half lidded grey eyes, casually taking the fairy's measure. "Whole roasts, a whole plate of kebabs, all sorts of crates, fresh corpses for the Sultan's pets. Definitely lotsa weapons for sure though." Thee orc's eyes then began to scrutinize the fairy a bit further, as if seeing her for the very first time.

"What exactly are you, Fledididi, 'cause I've never seen your like back home, with the bug wings and everything." Kraghbar looked between the fairy and Brogg briefly, clearly making some unseen comparison between the two before continuing. "You, like, actually some kinda giant bug like Broggi here's a giant frog? 'Cause you really got that disguise down real good, can't even see the thorax or them creepy bug eyes through it." As if to make absolutely certain his statement was true, Kraghbar gave Fledidi another once over to reconfirm the high quality of her assumedly magical disguise.

"Oh, right! Ya introduced yerself. Gotta remember my manners... name's Kraghbar. Since you can talk, I promise I'm not gonna make you into a stew. Always important to mention that to keep folks at ease. Peace be wit ya, drowning buddy!"

That was when Kraghbar reached out for one of Fledidi's much smaller hands for a solely orc-appropriate handshake.

It seemed like everyone was in agreement without hardly an eye batted or a voice raised about going to see the king. It was a bit of surprise to Jane as she followed the others and clambered up onto the lily pad raft. She was used to committees, hearings, or at least group discussion. There was very little discussion; just a few nods of agreement, and Harper and Leonora taking charge with manning the steering of the vessel.

The dwarf settled herself next to the thin bookish boy, Cadmun, if she recalled. He had been quite chatty before the storm taking a half day of Jane’s time to ask her questions and expound theories. She had not found him annoying or bothersome, he just seemed to like to talk, so Jane let him.

“Well, at least we don’t have to walk just yet,” the cleric tried to make talk with Cadmun as the little faerie, moved over to talk with the cook-warrior Orc. Jane wasn’t quite sure what to make to Kraghbar. He talked like many of the old dwarves at home with his colorful language.

“If you want help with that I can carry some her things. You seem to have enough books and supplies of your to keep track of,” Jane offered motioning at the second bag sitting next to the wizard. She had seen him struggle a bit with both getting them loaded onto the raft.

Fledidi hadn't intended the search for an adequate porter to be a big deal, but it was a big deal! Large bipeds, they just didn't appreciate how one's struggles were so different when you were small, and prided yourself on keeping slim! There was a sprinkling of denial within all this too, as deep down in her often terrifying but illuminating subconscious, a little voice was trying to yell really loud, the advice becoming soft and muffled within an emptiness and lack of attention. "Why don't you just work out more," it said, "you call yourself independent? Haha, you're a mess!"

There were far more interesting things to think about right now. Kraghbar for one. The orcen man had been kind enough to reply to her! He hadn't reached out to grab a handful of her either, quite yet. This all bode very well. Fledidi smiled to him, and even chuckled when his lifting prowess was revealed to include kebabs. She'd had one once, and managed to get a whole five meals out of it. The fried balls within, fall-off-hell or whatever they were called though, had a few interesting after effects, the kind that made airbourne acceleration all that much easier...

Oh, Kraghbar had asked a question!

"What am I? Oh I can assure you that I'm not a giant bug, oh no siree!"

Did this mean that wherever the orc hailed from, didn't have fairies? Damn... that sounded like a great place to go one day!

"I'm a fairy, or so I've been told by other fairies, though I'm a little different to the usual ones of my kind. I guess everyone likes to think they're different though. You're certainly different! You seem scary at first, but I'm thinking you're actually rather nice."

A gentle smile was sent the orc's way.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Kraghbar!"

By now a big green hand was incoming, and Fledidi summoned as much bravery as she could, hoping that he'd realise that she was... delicate... and by extension totally not built for carrying heavy packs around. She took one of his fingers in her hand and shook it gently. Was this the phalange of a killer, a cook, or just a gentle giant?

Ok, she wanted to get a quick look at Cadmun. Give the young fellow a wink to indicate that things were going well over here. When she went to take a glance though, the nice-looking dwarven woman had popped herself by his side.

Oh, they're cute together... oh you scoundrel hehe!

Cadmun
left-aligned image
Cadmun looked like he was about to ‘help’ Fledidi by elucidating at length about his father’s collected works on fairies and the Feywild for the benefit (or more likely confusion) of Kraghbar when the dwarven cleric…’Lady Jane’ if he was recalling her name correctly, took a seat by the young scholar.

“Ah, my thanks, though I think Sir Kraghbar has the matter well in hand.” Still, Cadmun appreciated the company! The dwarf had been been quite…tolerant of Cadmun’s interest in both her race’s history and the god she served. Cadmun found the practices and works of the divine interesting (as he did many things outside of the tiny hamlet he grew up in), not having much firsthand experience with clerics and the like himself beyond his Mathias’ codex.

“I have to say…I’ve not read about or seen anything quite like these marshes. If we are indeed still in the land of the living…do you still feel the presence of your, ah, ‘Silvanus’ was their name? Apologies if got their name wrong.”

OOCMy bad, I must have screwed up the post I wrote before as it's not visible now. Catching up.

Liam
right-aligned image

Clearly the massive amount of information flowing at them has taken effect on Liam, who is the last one standing before the rest of the survivors loading up on the ship. So many things to think about... Sir Roderick alive... they're all alive despite the massive storm... strange toad-like beings such as their new acquaintance Brogg... the Swamp Kingdom... it was a lot to take in.

It was only the talk of the others preparing to load up that snapped him out of his shock. Liam does not run to the boat, but rather walks with a long, crisp stride associated with that of a veteran soldier. He grabs the scabbard of his greatsword and turns it slightly so he can board the boat and sit down properly. As they push off, Liam breaks his silence by addressing Harper, who is piloting the boat. "Companion Liam at your service, miss. I have a Guidance cantripminor blessing I can bestow upon you to let the hand of Helm help you pilot this craft, if you wish it. It involves a physical touch, which is why I wish to ask before offending you."

Looking at the others, he realizes he should be a bit more sociable than he has been before so he extends a hand towards each of them individually and says "Liam," offering a firm handshake to whomever takes it.

Brogg the Berry-Picker
right-aligned image

Brogg chuckled as they paddled along, "Well aren't you lot a marvel! All this talk of sailing and fairies and such! I must say that if you looked at one of the hard-folk, Fledidi couldn't be compared to any of them! No, strangelings through and through you all are. Though I'll try my best to remember your names and types."

Peering up at the cloudy sky, Harper could tell quite easily that it was around mid-morning. Years of experience navigating in all sorts of weather conditions made it a breeze to keep track of the sun in this bog. However experience only went so far, and she was having a hardest time understanding how to keep the odd pad moving at a steady rate.
What Brogg said was true, all the extra weight was doing a number on the pad's speed and stability, so they to move slowly through the water to keep it from dipping below the murky surface.
But Brogg didn't seem to mind. His throat rumbled and croaked musically as he hummed snatches of old songs that he only half knew.

Hearing the fairy speak of the King's home, Brogg lest out a prideful puff. "Oh you won't have a bad word to say about Rapploc. A marvel it is, built right into the old and mighty cluster of cypress trees. Something to make even those Skyholders keep their tongues behind their beaks! Ahhhh, Rapploc. As fine a city as you can find in all the Swamp Kingdom! You'll have room and then some to store your kit, I don't think the king will have any trouble finding you a place to stay in his court for as long as you wish! Don't let his stern attitude knock you off guard, the old king is quite a just sort, but he doesn't accept any sort of rudeness."

With that said, the party was treated to the sights of the swamp. As far as swamps went this was a very pleasant place.
The cypress trees rose high above them as the sun filtered down through the murky air. In the distance, small lights from homes built around such trees shone through the mists and gave the swamp an otherworldly air. Reeds thrust up from the water, and occasionally groupings of bog flowers or strange berry bushes added their splashes of color to the overwhelming greenery of the swamp.
At times, the party could see local toddarts out for a swim or stroll, bags tied around their chests so as to not interrupt their swimming. Occasionally these toddarts would look over and wave wave at Brogg, only to stare open-mouthed at the cluster of strangelings that shared his boat.

OOCFeel free to add that 1d4 to a second watercraft check (with advantage). Five hours will pass before you can make a second, but this one might turn out better! In the meantime feel free to make some IC interactions.

As time went on, Harper became a bit more Water Vehicles: 16comfortable with the pad, and let herself relax a little more into her position with the push pole. She listened passively to the random conversations floating about between the other survivors, as they all did their best to come to terms with their new situation, and their fast approaching arrival at the 'Toad King's Court' at Rapploc.

It was both fascinating and cute to see Fledidi's burgeoning friendship with The Cook, the smallest and the largest among them pairing up was sweet poetry... and just too strange, too perfect, to not be true. And Cadmum and Jane as well were talking in hushed contemplation of their surroundings. Leonora and Liam seemed to be a good fit, if the former could get over her attachment to Sir Roderick. And that just left Harper, comfortably apart and married to her job. Saving herself for the one she left behind... That was, if she could ever get back to him.

The Dwarf nodded at Cadmun’s recall of her God, “Yes, I can still feel him. Silvanus teaches us that he is present everywhere there is life. So we are not dead. Do not fret about that. Though where we are is a good question. I am not sure if we are still on the material plane, on part of the explored portion, or in another realm.

The surface world is still new to me. I’ve read a little about swamps or marshes to know they are wet places and that not everything grows well in them. Beyond that I am sorry to say I am not much help.”

AS much as Jane had tolerate Cadmun on the ship his company had been good for her. Telling him about her home and culture had kept her mind off of her sea sickness. The young Wizard was enthusiastic to say the least to hear first hand about life in the Dwarf Clans.

Their conversation was briefly interrupted by Liam, the Cleric of Helm, making proper introductions. Jane shook his hand firmly, “ May Helm and Silvanus continue to bless us in this place. Jane Quartzknife as your service. You can call me Jane or Lady Jane.” The Dwarf was aware of Helm and not unfamiliar with him. Helm was a popular God among the Clans and shared many of the values that they did.

She continued to converse with Cadmun while she watched the swamp scenery. Towering Cypress trees reminded her of the pillars in the great halls supporting the land below and the sky above with with their flaring roots and leafy canopies. Spotting other Toddarts traveling in the water a question came to the Dwarf.

“Brogg," Jane asked raising her voice so everyone could hear her question,"are there only Toddarts in the kingdom or are their other species? Or are the Kingdoms , I am assuming there are other kingdoms, separated by what species or race they are?” She wasn’t sure if that was the right word for this new land but she was trying to be not offend. The giant toad was still something to get used to. Humanoid sized amphibians were not normal on the other side of the sea.
