Leonora
right-aligned image

'She has a strange sense of humour,' Leonora smirks at Harper's mention of Umberlee, 'if indeed she was the one to put us here. Though I could think of worse places,' the half-elf considered.

She raised her hand to greet the Toddards at the banks of the river, returning their incredulous stares with an only slightly less intense sense of awe. Despite Leonora's concern for sir Roderick, the agitation building in her stomach was offset by the quiet beauty of the lands surrounding her. The pale sun, the still river, the quiet hum in the air... It was almost peaceful. Sitting on a lilypad, steered by a frog, with nothing better to do than take in her surroundings, the half-elf felt a strange, unfamiliar sense of peace. 'It is quite beautiful here, isn't it?' she remarked, at no one in particular.

Turning to Brogg, a hint of concern marred her face. 'You said sir Roderick had embarked on a search for other... Strangelings,' she started, deciding to use the Toddard's word rather than anything less cheerful, like "survivor" or "castaway". 'Have there been any? Strangelings, I mean, other than us or sir Roderick?' Looking about, her curious glance turned wary. 'And will he be safe, in these lands? I'd quite like to know what to watch out for, once we begin our search for him.' She gestured at the plants and flowers around her. 'I can get by in the wild places of our home,' she said, indicating the others. 'But I would appreciate any advice on what to watch out for, here in your home.'

She just hoped sir Roderick had thought to ask the same thing, before stuffing his face with some poisonous berries or the like.

Kraghbar al-Gruun
left-aligned image

Up~ and down~ and up~ and down~.

The single finger shake was certainly different, but what else could he expect from such a little lass?

"Only scary when I need to be, Deedee. Startin' to think that's less than I thought." Of course there was always the occasional bandit to deal with, the drunk who wanted a piece of the biggest thing around, and the always inevitable rodent of unusual size, but since becoming his own orc, Kraghbar had found that there was much more he could offer to the world than looking big and imposing around doorways. "So, fae-ri huh? Guess your kin don't like sand, seein' as the caravans never had even a hint of them bug wings. You got any culture-type delicacies you're willin' to teach to Kraghbar, maybe in portions fit for someone a little bigger? Or they like the dwarves, able to clean out whole feasts on their lonesome in those stout little bodies of theirs? Now there's a folk you can never count out when it comes to eatin'. Learned my lesson more than a few times. Very good times, ha!"

His belly gave a jovial jiggle as he laughed at the memory, the orc easing himself into further comfort as the lily pad space allowed. The fact that there was, in fact, a dwarf on this ad-hoc cruise made him realize that he could, in fact, relive those memories yet again.

"Hey, dwarf buddy, when we gets where we're going, you and me gotta get some action going! Waddya say?! First one to puke out their guts loses!" A very fat, very enthusiastic finger was pointed straight at the Lady Jane, promises of the culinary challenge to come being willed through the orc's digit. But when that was done, the orc had another decision to make, about whether or not he should sit back up again and greet the the other human, Liam, in kind, or finally lull himself into perfect napping posture.

He decided to split the difference, rolling himself just slightly so as to aim his significant bulk in the general direction of the human without completely abandoning his napping stance. A large arm reached out to Liam's own from semi-prone position, clamping down firmly and offering a proper, vigorous orc-shake, a sign of respect to show that proper attention was being paid to the action.

"Peace be wit ya, Liam. Kraghbar's the name, lover of all good foods and discoverin' more every day."

Liam
right-aligned image

Shaking hands with Lady Jane, he responds in Dwarven "Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Lady Jane." Liam makes a mental note to discuss her faith with her more when they didn't have so many questions for their mysterious benefactor. Helmites traditionally have no like nor dislike for Silvanus - they typically kept to themselves and troubled no one. His knowledge outside of that, however, is limited.

The orc is a happy-go-lucky sort and gets a smile out of the dour looking Liam at his introduction. "I too am a lover of good food, Kraghbar, perhaps we will find some soon, eh?" He takes note of the orc's strength in his grip and sees one of equal or perhaps even greater strength, so he makes a note not to underestimate Kraghbar.

Liam does take the time to give a small wave to those they see on the edge of the waters, his one face likely resembling theirs as he takes in their new and strange surroundings.

The cleric smiled at Companion Liam, he had not spoke to her before in Dwarvish so it was a pleasant surprise to hear her native tongue.

At being called by her race Jane frowned slightly at Kraghbar, but smiled as he went on challenging her to a drink-till-you-can’t. “Ah, I think you will drink me under the table a couple times over my friend. But if we find some decent ale than I am happy to oblige.”

Jane had been to enough Dwarven banquets to know what to expect. Either very weak or very strong ale would be lined up on either side of the long table. The opponents would then see who could drink the most mugs before vomiting or passing out. The last one standing won. Jane had never been very good at it but it was fun to bet and watch even if you didn’t bet. Most of the time it happened once a good chunk of the festivities and formalities were over and some guests had left.

Fledidi grinned. Everything was going so great! Cadmun and Jane were hitting it off. The big tall serious guy was chatting away, and the orc was unexpectedly pleasant to be around. Thus far, the fairy was thinking that this place was actually heaps better than a Yonder Sea!

"Sand?" She considered her answer for a moment. "Mmm, you're right, I'm totally not a fan! Sand for large folks is like pebbles for small folks. Imagine getting pebbles stuck in your socks, or between your toes?"

Ok, it was kind of a huge exaggeration, but explaining it this way was just heaps more fun.

"Oh delicacies! We certainly have those. Most of my people, we like forests and green places. Some prefer caves and things too. Popular foods are milk, churned butter, cakes and sweets! Some kind folks even leave such things out for us, as gifts, or as a bribe not to..."

Should she confess? Na, maybe later. Hopefully an appreciation of rich dairy products and high sugar content foods would be shared with one such as Kraghbar anyway.

By now Liam was pretty close too. Fledidi figured that the tall human... no wait, was he human? He looked human, but not like... fully. A variant of some kind? Of what manner was his variation, she wondered? An extra ear? Nope. Maybe an extra toe or two then. Regardless of Liam's race though, he seemed to be a "straight-up" kind of guy. Good posture. Good manners. Good muscles. The kind of muscles which could carry extra gear.

She hovered over closer to him, and smiled.

"Hello! Kraghbar is making me feel hungry, you too eh? I'm Fledidi."

The curtsied to him, mid air. For some reason, she thought this guy might appreciate a more formal approach.

Brogg the Berry-Picker
right-aligned image

Brogg nodded to Jane, "Oh yes, while we Toddarts are perfectly at home in the swamps, some other peoples come to live here from time to time. Missens, Lapires, Molns, even the odd Skyholder (when they find a tree suited to their tastes). But not in many numbers.

As for the other lands, they are typically filled with those most suited or comfortable with to them. Missens, Lapires, and many other folk like to dwell in the forests, free to do as they please under the protection of the Wood Guard. While the Skyholders keep to the treetops and only really rule when it suits them. But ever since the Autumn war the only real kingdom above the ground has been Paloro, the Swamp Kingdom."

The old toad shakes his head, "Not that some of our kings didn't try to take the woodlands as their own, but it was a silly ambition that we here have long given up."

Brogg paused at Leonora's question, "W-well... I see I should probably be more clear. What we call "Strangelings" are really not a proper people, as you might've guessed. Typically strangelings are what we call the terrifying and dangerous creatures that come from the Deep Trees, the Roaming Hills, or the other places nobody with any sense goes.

Terrible things really, and I've heard it said that many sorts of strangelings aren't even alive, but are walking bits of bone and meat! But I hope you don't take offence when I call you kindly folk by that name, it's always been our word for new or unknown beings from places we know little about."

His paddle dipped and arched gracefully as he pushed the boat forwards, barely leaving a single ripple. Truly Brogg was a master paddler that few back in your own lands could compare to.
"In fact, I believe your Sir Roderick was the first friendly strangeling we ever saw or heard of in all the known lands! Before you lot were the trolls of the East Mire. A terrible bunch of strangelings that seemingly came from nowhere and terrorized our people until the previous king led his knights on a hunt to purge them from the kingdom! But you should be safe in most of the towns, just be wary in unpaddled waters. Some trolls still survive in hidden corners, and on occasion wicked fishes or bugs attack travelers who don't stick to the safe ways."

The old toat pondered for a moment longer, "Also don't approach glowing berries, there are odd fishes who leave them out as lures for tired travelers when nights are dark."

Meanwhile, Harper's study of Brogg's methods payed off in spades. While the old toad's paddle dipped and adjusted direction, the tiefling would shove off when the moment was right to increase their speed. If what the paddler had told them about distances was true, they would probably make it to the Toad King's Court just before dinner!

Leonora
right-aligned image

'No offense taken,' Leonora reassured Brogg. The half-elf realized she must look as strange to the toddard as he did to them. To be lumped together with all outsiders wasn't so bad. In truth, it was a treatment Leonora was quite well accustomed to- first among the elves of her childhood home, then among the humans at sir Roderick's court. At least Brogg treated her and her traveling companions with kindness.

'It sounds like this realm has its share of dangers,' the paladin mused. Of all the things their realms could've had in common, trolls were one of the things she could've done without. 'Much like our own, then. It is a shame, to see such a peaceful land beset by such awfulness.' She looked down, staring at the water pensively. 'I do hope sir Roderick steered clear of them. He always did have a penchant for running headlong into trouble...'

Liam
right-aligned image

Liam has never met a fairy before, so he is absolutely delighted to be in Fledidi's presence. A genuine smile crosses his face as he returns her bow and he replies "My name is Liam, Companion of the One True Vision. Pleased to meet you, Fleididi."

Liam then listens silenty as Brogg tells them all more about the world around them. Such a strange yet interesting place. Ever devout, Liam quickly surmises that Helm must have a reason for sending him here, especially due to the concerns and warnings given to them by Brogg. Surely there was some great deed that could be accomplished here in Helm's name. Liam just isn't sure yet, so for now he has to continue to walk by faith.

Cadmun
left-aligned image
The young scholar was like a wide-eyed child as he observed the other toddarts going about their daily business, his awe nearly mirroring their own. His hand was a blur of scribbling as he took note after note. At several points he nearly fell off of their pad and into the murky swamp water below as he leaned forward to try to get a better look at what appeared to be lights of distant structures.

Eventually, however, Cadmun realized he was being…well…a bit rude. He coughed before shifting about (carefully this time) to face the others. “Ah…full apologies, I tend to get engrossed in my work. Erm…most of you probably already ran into me on the ship, nevertheless allow me to properly introduce myself; I am Cadmun, a humble scholar from Gaetsdale.” The human bowed as best he could from his seat, even as his hands twitched at the urge to resume note-taking upon hearing the descriptions their most generous and gregarious host provided of other the ‘strangelings’ this land had encountered. He’ll definitely be pestering Brogg for about those ’berry fish’ and the other so-called strangelings that have visited their lands later.

But Cadmun shouldered on regardless, smiling brightly at the others as he continued. “I look forward to journeying with such fascinating company…er…assuming we’ll be sticking together in the near future?”

Rapploc
right-aligned image

The party talked and chatted as the trip continued, munching the berries their host graciously provided them with no question of compensation or payment. The old toad listened happily to the tales of others lands, occasionally offering a mild "My my..." at those things that were far beyond his experience.
Eventually the party noticed something looming ahead in the mists. Tall shadows stretched from the horizon to the sky, dotted liberally with lights from base to top that shone brilliantly in the coming gloom of night.
Rapploc, seat of the Swamp King, Rapplus III.

As they neared the base of the mighty trees, a warbling horn sounded from beyond. Soon enough, ten toddarts mounted atop barded newts came twisiting through the water.
These toddarts were taller and younger than Brogg, with straight postures and bright lances from which hung banners of the Swamp Kingdom. They quickly flanked the lily-pad boat and one of the knights, presumably the leader by the finery of his equipment, greeted Brogg and the party.
While the other toddart warriors wore scale mail and caps, this one was deacked head to toe in steel and bore a colorful plume. Upon their rouned shields were blazoned the device of the King, a white swamp lily on a field of green.
"Greetings, honored guests of the Swamp Kingdom. I am Torbeth, Captain of the Guard. You ride in the company of Brogg the Berry-Picker, and as such the King has granted you his regard and sends for you at once. You are just in time to join the evening feast where we also host other guests from lands afar. Come!"

Soon the lily-pad docked at the foot of one of the massive trees, and the party gets to see up-close the wonders of Rapploc. Lights shine from many posts up and down the branches, while homes and platforms are showered throughout the trees, linked by bridges of many types. Ever upwards through the trees the city spirals, its roots adorned with stone watchtowers and mooring stations for boats of varying design. The higher one goes the softer the city got, wood structures interlaced with the trees, and moss was cultivated in places that made walking a wonderful experience.
The platforms too get larger, becoming plazas and streets that bear stands and shops from which toddarts sold many wares. Though to the trained eye of city-walkers it became clear which was the most abundant and sought after type of product, potions.
Occasionally among the plazas the party spotted other creatures much unlike the toddarts. Short mice-folk, tall rabbit-folk, slinking otter-folk and once a tall, hulking badger-folk. Most of these seemed to be merchants who sold their goods in exchange for the elixers and potions of the Swamp Kingdom.

Torbeth dismounted his newt mount and thudded his feet onto the small port of Rapploc. Turning to the party the toad knight thumped his chest and bowed to Brogg. "The King sends his regard, Brogg. You are ever in his good graces."

The old toad chuckled, "Oh Torbeth, you're too much! You tell his majesty that I don't need such praise, I'm merely a humble servant doing his part."
Brogg tugged on the rope that trailed behind his pad and pulled up another jar of bell-berries. He offered it to the party with a broad smile, "Here, this is yours to gift to the king. It's only proper that you have a gift for him. Good luck kind people, I'm going to back to my work. May the mists keep your skin moist all your days."

Strange New Worlds
left-aligned image

Never in her wildest dreams would the young Ranger have ever expected to see a flotilla of Toads riding in formation on the backs of Newts. Yet, there they were in front of her, and once again, she had to remind herself she wasn't in Faerun anymore! The reception of Torbeth was pleasant, if not a tad formal, and brought to the forefront of her mind that their time with Brogg was coming to an end. It was a bittersweet realization, as he had been so kind, so hospitable. The common folk often were, in her experience. Not having much, but willing to give so that everyone could have enough; and pulling together like any crew on any well governed ship would. So Harper feared that now with their armored retinue whether the more Aristocratic, for none could be more noble than the Berry-picker, companions would continue to live up to Brogg's fine examples of civility.

Even Harper's worrying mind had to pause at the sight of Rapploc however as the Lilypad silently drifted to moor at the base of a large tree. She had been on many a ship that had come late into harbor; The twinkling beauty of dockside candlelight reflecting on the waters as they gently lapped against the supports. The smells of the fresh sea air suddenly changing to that of cooking fires from the various taverns, and inns, dotting the landscape. Yet none of her previous experiences had prepared the young Tiefling for what views greeted her from the branches of the Swamp King's domains.

Soon, she was to be dining with the Ruler of these marvels, and with mention of other outlanders as well... perhaps finding Sir Roderick would not be as difficult as one might have thought? Either way, Harper was insistent on enjoying every little bit of wonder that she was allowed to experience. And the thoughts of the other Kingdoms, their splendors, would she see them as well? She wondered.

A City in Trees
left-aligned image
Fledidi felt exceptionally lucky! Not only had they all arrived without being swallowed by the sticky marsh, the travelers all seemed like a nice bunch too. Even those she'd not really hung out with much yet, had gone about their journey in a peaceful and pleasant way. This bode really well for the fairy, for surely a voyage into the Yonder Sea would attract all kinds of people. Adventurous and explorative folks, sure! People who wanted to escape or flee... from past wrongdoings or the law? Much more scary! It seemed to Fledidi that of them all, perhaps it was her who was the one running away from something. A sobering thought. She'd remember that in case she drank too much wine at the imminent feast.

When Torbeth arrived, the fairy's eyes blinked with surprise and a deep interest, mostly towards his newt. She hadn't ever seen many of those before. And they were cute! It also looked like they could carry quite a weight, if Torbeth's layer of metallic and protective coating was anything to go by. This, would be popped into the mental receptacle where items for further exploration were stored. Her list of potential "pack-carrying" assistants was getting to be quite long! And given the size of the city... she'd be needing them.

"Oh... look at this place!"

Her eyes feasted on the marvel that was Rapploc, before turning back to Brogg.

"Brogg, thank you so very very much! You were by far, the most pleasant and wonderful part of our journey, even before arriving here. Oh, a gift? Umm... yes that makes sense. You're so thoughtful!"

She'd let someone else accept the berry-gift, but secretly hoped that it wouldn't be Kraghbar. That guy could probably eat all these in one mouthful!

Would this gift be enough though? Could the fairy gain the King's extra-favor with a supplementary offering? Mmm, perhaps.

Leonora
right-aligned image

Leonora smiled at Fledidi's remark, agreeing wholeheartedly... Though the journey "before arriving here" being mostly dominated by the shipwreck, that was not a very high bar to reach. She accepted the jar from Brogg with both hands, careful not to drop the cherised gift. 'Thank you again, Brogg. Without your aid we would still be lost in the swamp. I hope both that we will be able to repay the favor, and that you will never find yourself in need of such,' she added with a wink.

Turning back to Torbeth, Leonora bowed her head respectfully. 'Thank you for welcoming to your city,' she started. 'We would be honoured to accept your invitation, though we hope our appearance will not offend the king?' she asked, looking down- her clothing was caked with mud, and she smelled of the ocean, a scent which had not been improved by journeying through a swamp. The half-elf did not mind particularly, but she was worried how the king and his court would react to such unkempt visitors...

Rapploc was a sight to be hold. Jane craned her neck back, mouth open at the wonder of the living trees being built on or in or how ever the people of this land engineered their buildings. It was fascinating. No stone, no masonry, it appeared to be nothing but living, natural material.

‘By my hammer and chisel I have never seen anything like this,” Jane breathed."Have you ever read about anything like this Cadmun? Maybe the Elves to some degree but not like this."

Her attention was pulled from the tree city to the water by the arrival of armored guards on newts the size of ponies. “Oh…..” she much like Fledidi was enamored with the newts and their barding. She wanted to reach out and pat the nearest one on the nose, but though better of it. Worried about falling in the water should it shy away from her and possibly offending it's rider by doing so without asking.

Disembarking from the lilypad barge Jane took Brogg’s clammy damp hand and shook it heartily, “Thank you for your assistance Master Brogg. May Silvanus smile upon you and keep your lily pads green and strong,” she blessed him. Indeed the Berry-picker had been a blessing for them. Who knows if any of them would have found their way here on their own. It was too bad he could not accompany them any farther. Perhaps their path’s would cross again in the future.

Kraghbar al-Gruun
left-aligned image

Kraghbar cracked open a single eye as he heard the changing commotion about him, wishing that his brief nap would have been extended somewhat, but also excited for the promised feast to come. Both eyes then bolted open in amazement as he beheld the arborical civilization before him, a sight far beyond anything he had yet witnessed in all the days since he had left his homeland. Driving the strangeness of the whole venture home even further was their welcoming committee, a group of armored toddarts wielding lances and riding... giant newts?

"Now hold on a sand-spittin' minute, that makes no sense! Why're the newts just bigger newts and not, like, people-people, like the toad-darts?" As Kraghbar stood up from his lounging posture, he noticed the rest of the good folk who were going about their business in this grand city, anthropomorphic animals of all kinds just living their regular lives among the trees. This did not help him become less confused. "What the heck are the rules for that sorta thing anyway?"

So absorbed in his contemplation was he that he did not notice the jar of berries Brogg had produced, or the subsequent acceptance of said jar by Leonora. Probably for the best, it was a gift for his majesty, right? Though nobody would have begrudged the orc if he had taken one, or two... three berries out of the jar, tops. If it was good enough for the grand poobah of this kingdom, it must be very juicy indeed.

"Thanks for the lift, Broggi, new pal of mine!" He took one of the berry-picker's hands in both of his own and gave it a few good shakes, his toothy grin stretching out the scars on his stubbled face. "Maybe we'll see each other again once we've got all this craziness sorted, eh? Welcome shade and warm sands, berry-buddy!"

And with the goodbyes having been made, Kraghbar looked to the imminent future, and began mentally preparing himself to judge the heck out of this Swamp King depending on how generous he was with the meal he would provide. The orc may have known nothing about the customs of this place, but in his eyes food etiquette was always good barometer for a civilization's manners, no matter how alien.

Upon Leonora mentioning the group's collective hygiene, Kraghbar took a good sniff under his armpit to get a whiff of the situation, and though his nose crinkled slightly, he seemed mostly unmoved.

"Eh, don't think it's that bad... Nori, right? Fancy-Nori. Anyway, it's an honest musk, and yeah, I'd rather be smellin' like beetroot pie right now, but could be worse. Oh, you think they're gonna have pies?"

Soon enough, it was back to imagining the kinds of food a people like this would partake in, and the culinary wonders which could be shared to satisfy the orc's appetite.
