The Road to Xullhaven - Part 5

All things in order, the brave Adventures set out on their road to Xullhaven. Oren, Lux, Daybreak, Gallindan, Celebangolad, Adelaide, Kerwin, Isabella, and Aaric formed the party. It was truly a diverse group with wide-ranging skills and experiences, from a simple farm town girl who held a fascination with wizards and druids to the imp-familiar Lux who had traversed the Nine Hells and Abyss.

The first leg of the trip would take the group to Bluemoon, a river town known for trading, where a fork in their paths would either send them down the river on a barge, or across it, to ultimately reach their destination. Before Bluemoon though, they would travel a road known as the Trade Winds Thoroughfare.
The Trade Winds ThoroughfareThe Trade Winds Thoroughfare was a sprawling, meandering road that spanned across several kingdoms, connecting distant regions in a vast network of trade and commerce. It earned its name due to the consistent flow of goods, merchants, and travelers that were carried along its length, much like the constant currents of the wind.

This lengthy thoroughfare was a lifeline for the various kingdoms it traversed, facilitating the exchange of diverse goods, cultures, and information. Caravans, traders, and adventurers alike journeyed along its expanse, navigating through landscapes ranging from fertile plains to dense forests and mountainous terrains. The road's importance was reflected not only in its role as a trade route but also as a cultural artery, connecting the people of different realms.

Travelers on the Trade Winds Thoroughfare encountered bustling marketplaces, diverse caravans, and waystations that offered respite and services. However, the road was not without its perils, as the vast expanse it covered was home to an array of challenges, from natural obstacles to the occasional banditry. Yet, for those who sought adventure, prosperity, or the thrill of the open road, the Trade Winds Thoroughfare beckoned as a route of endless possibilities.
From the small town of Oakcrest, traveling south to another small trading town called Verdant Haven, was the fastest way to access Trade Winds Thoroughfare. It was a road the locals knew fairly well, as they often took their harvest and goods to Verdant Haven to trade. This first small segment gave the travelers time to form a cohesive traveling routine, that would helpfully make things easier once they reached more dangerous territory.

OODMWelcome to Chapter 5 of our Story! At this point, we may hit some 'Random Encounters'. The number and danger of these encounters will be determined by a group travel skill check. For your first post here, describe what your character's (and mounts/familiars) travel responsibilities are, and how you do it. Make a skill check that coincides with your choice (e.g. perception for lookout duty, survival for cooking, and so forth). The NPCs (Aaric, Daybreak, and Isabella), have the ability to help out as well. Each has a +2 to any roll result that may be distributed as needed to the group (total of +6), by having them assist with a given task.

Adelaide DarkdraftUnlike her master, Adelaide had no need of such a majestic mount, and indeed would have needed a gods’ damned ladder to get atop such a beast. Instead she was rather pleased with the much smaller War Horse stat blockwar horse her magic had summoned for her to ride. In truth it was not a real horse, but it looked and played the part well enough that she oftentimes found herself forgetting that it was a fey creature. It didn’t seem to have a name or any sort of agenda that she could discern through the bond the spell had formed. Indeed the creature seemed delighted simply to spend some time among mortal creatures and their world, which it found endlessly fascinating.

As she rode along the road to Verdant Haven, she

turned her eyes to the sky and tried to remember the portents her grandmother had spoken of when deducing the coming weather. The old crone had spoken often of clouds and winds and fluctuations in temperatures and what it all meant, but Adelaide had been a child and more interested in the freshly baked cookies waiting inside the house. Now, however, such knowledge could prove very useful for the group as they travelled to the Trade Winds Thoroughfare and then onto their destination. They had to travel, there was no getting around that, but being able to avoid a little rain could make that journey much more enjoyable.

"Tell me Kerwin," Adelaide began, leaning back in her saddle to glance back at their new wizard companion while brushing strands of brilliant, red hair away from her eyes, "after everything you've seen so far - the devils and the dangers - why stick with us? Surely there must be easier ways for a man of magical talent to make a living?"

OrenThe warlock rides along on a horse he purchased for the trip, enjoying the company of both new and old companions. As the days pass, he begins to learn more about the party, and the roles they naturally fall into.

Most often he rides next to Daybreak, seeking the old comfort of her companionship. But to his occassional chagrin, he finds Isabelle also prefers the tiefling woman's company. It was probably for the best, the young girl needed looking after, and there were few as attentive as the once-dryad. Still, as a druid, Daybreak was a competent tracker and scout, but given Isabelle's fondness for her, Oren opts to take Lux and trek ahead instead.

Sometimes he would simply ride ahead, several hundred meters behind Lux, who can fly invisibly and telepathically report back the sights he observes. Other times, Oren takes to the air himself, flying above the trees to get his own sense of the land, particularly when the terrain begins to shift.

On such occasions, he takes the opportunity to explain what's ahead to Aaric and the rest of the group. "Looks like there's a river with no bridge, but a wide ford, several miles ahead," he tells the warrior by means of conversation. "What do you know of these borderlands?"

GallindanAs the party rides on, Gallindan smiles as he watches the interactions among the others. There are real bonds here - some old and some new. The eladrin rides with the others often, joining in laughter and in tales. But as the road grows longer, he finds himself growing wary. Since Oren and Lux are handling the scouting at the front of the party, he and Celebangolad often drift to the rear of the party. And they often ride off the road, into the woods that flanked the path. There they wait, watching the travelers that pass behind the group and looking for signs of trouble from behind. After a few minutes of this, they return to the road to catch up to the others. This affords them time to share stories of their own, which largely focus on Gallindan's sister, as each knew her at a different time in her life.

Kerwin Powell Back on the road. One would think, by looking at Kerwin or by spending time with the sloth of a man, that he would have dislike travel but on the open road, he could forget about swindles, forget about those he had wronged and forget that he was a sinister businessman. This time, of course, was different. He was on a quest. It sounded almost strange for him to even think the concept. How quickly fate had flipped his life upon an ear.

While he did his best to keep up (his donkey that pulled his cart didn't always like to maintain the pace set by the horses whether they be magical in nature or mundane...then there was the elk but that was just a whole other thing entirely) he kept his eyes peeled on the side of the road for any
Dice arcana:
1d20+7 (9)+7 Total = 16
reagents for ingredients he might need for his potions. There were many lichen one could peel off tree bark, or mushrooms growing off fallen logs or weeds that held mystical powers.

His search was interrupted by conversation, "after everything you've seen so far - the devils and the dangers - why stick with us? Surely there must be easier ways for a man of magical talent to make a living?"

Fighting back a smirk, Kerwin replied in measured pace trying to keep a bit of distance between current heroic Kerwin and his past as a conman, "Well, while occasionally having some whack job with a magic lantern trying to separate your head from your shoulders complicates matters...I found while making what some might think was an 'honest living' that there would still be a fair share of people unhappy with what you were doing. I believe I've done little but raise the stakes a bit. Sure my life may be in more danger now...but the rewards are far superior, and, I'm not simply referring to coin." He thought of Isabella. He had found a way to give the girl her life back, something he had never really done before just pawning suspect potions on fools for gold pieces.

Shrugging, he added, "I thought much of fate...but it would seem this all just fell into place as if preordained in some manner."

Traveling to Verdant Haven was going smoothly. There was the random bridge that needed to be replaced, easily spotted in advance by Oren and Lux, that didn't take long to work around. Isabella kept company with Daybreak most of the time, learning more about what it meant, and took to be a druid. Daybreak was hopeful that her young apprentice would be able to begin casting some simple cantrips before too long. Isabella had two interests though, as he studied with Daybreak, she also took every opportunity she could to try and get Kerwin's attention. Mostly, they were very adolescent attempts to get him to notice her, but recently she had taken to trying to identify plants that he might find useful in his alchemy. So far, she was zero for a dozen on attempts, but at one point Isabella got close enough to Oren to take a whiff of him. She wrinkled her nose a bit at what she smelled and had to comment, "Kerwin... you might want to take a bath next chance we get."

Aaric seemed to be a very different person from when the others had first met him near Tribblefork. The time they had spent months ago, he was worried about his family, and his old hometown. His demeanor was serious and action-oriented. Now, he seemed like he hadn't a care in the world, took time to find humor in every joke and incident that happened in camp, and spent many hours enjoying the scenery of nature, especially at dusk and dawn then the colors of the sun spread the landscape in a rainbow of oranges, purples and reds. He was thoroughly enjoying just traveling, and directed the company as needed, though so far it was mostly a straight shot to Bluemoon. As Adelaide was able to detect, the weather for now was great for traveling. Not too hot, not cold, and no rain on the way.

At one point, Oren asked him what he knew of the Borderlands. "Well, there are several independent city-states between here and most of the empire. The tend to be in constant conflict with one another, fighting over land or resources. It's an ideal scenario for groups like the Knights of Neomosis to thrive, with plenty of work and money to make. Trade Winds Thoroughfare gets patrolled often enough that most can travel it in safety, but off the beaten path there is a lot of land that is still untamed. Between myself, two trained paladins, yourself, a druid and a wizard though, I doubt will find much that can trouble us."

Gallindan was the one who separated himself the most from the core of the traveling group, staying behind Kerwin and the wagon oftentimes, keeping a watch from the rear while ridding Celebangolad. Gillindan found the experience to be so enjoyable, that he often forgot what he was supposed to be watching out for. Any potential danger.

Luckily, the first sign of any potential troubles didn't come from the rear. Instead, Lux spotted what was a bit further down the road, and quickly reported to Oren. "Hey, so.... we might want to circle the horses so to speak with the others before we go on. A mile down the road, there are some trees cut to block the path, and a few bandits hiding in the brush nearby. I doubt they are expecting to run into the likes of us. Probably just want some fat merchant to rob. We could go around them, but they have a lodge house nearby that I smelled some booze in. I would hate to miss a chance to get my hands on some of that. I counted about a dozen scrubs in total."

OODMFeel free to discuss OOC how you would like to handle this before posting, if that would be helpful. Once we have a consensus, I'll give an update.

Adelaide Darkdraft ”We can’t very well pass them by, only for them to do gods-know-what to the next poor fools that pass by,” Adelaide said from atop her mount after hearing the situation laying in wait for them. As though to further punctuate her position on the matter, the young paladin reached back for her shield resting atop her saddlebags and began fitting it to her arm.

”I can ride in and spring the trap,” she said matter-of-factly, as though she were discussing what to have for lunch, ”then Gallindan can ride in to join the fracas when they reveal themselves, while Oren and Kerwin cover from a distance. Aaric can stay with the others at the wagon and keep watch for any runners.”

Adelaide looked around at the other members of the party for their input, her gaze lingering on Gallindan in particular. While she waited, she tightened the straps on her shield and her armour, the apprentice paladin seeming to have more-or-less made up her mind to deal with the bandits ahead.

Kerwin Powell "Perhaps we can turn the tables on them. I'll take my cart right toward them. When I'm in view of the tree, I'll stop. You'll already be waiting there...for them. We can ambush the ambushers! They'll never suspect that."

Oren was once a soldier, and there was a time when violence seemed like the best option. The past few years gave him more than enough taste of violence for his appetite though, and now he sometimes wondered if he wasn't more a cleric than a soldier. A priest faithful to a god that has no name, who is presumably locked away...

"I like the idea of springing the trap," he says, "but can we do it in a way that doesn't involve killing a dozen men? We've all fought demons and hideous creatures of darkness, present company excluded," he says to Lux. "But these are men, and in these dark times, we should at least try to understand why these men are robbing instead of farming. In my experience, few men grew up wanting to be drunken brigands."

He looks around at his companions. "Maybe I'm naïve, but perhaps we can find a way to help these men, even use them to our advantage, if they are not yet beyond help."

Kerwin Powell Kerwin gave Oren a skeptical look and said, "I'm inclined to agree with you but what if they don't simply ask nicely for our coin and just start loosing arrows?"

Adelaide Darkdraft Adelaide took a deep breath as she listened to Oren talk, calming her blood as the man made a few excellent points.

”You’re right, of course, but we should find out quickly enough which kind of brigand they are,” she said, wanting to bite her own tongue rather than admit she might be wrong. Youth, inexperience, or just anger, her own predilection for battle might have dragged them all into an unnecessary fight without a more seasoned point of view. To Kerwin’s point, however, what if it was necessary? She clapped a hand against her armoured stomach, ”Then I will drive the cart, and you hide in the back. I’m less threatening on the cart than on horse, but the armour keeps me safe if they start loosing arrows at someone they very obviously shouldn't be.”

GallindanGallindan was conflicted. He agreed with Adelaide that they couldn't very well just ride past the ambush and let it fall on innocents behind them on the road. But he also agreed with Oren that violence should rarely be the first option. Especially against simple humans, however misguided. Assuming, of course, that they were simple misguided humans. The proposed compromise seemed to make the most sense. "I think that's a good approach. Should the rest of us just stay well back? Or should some of us try to circle around through the woods to be able to respond more quickly? If there's a fight, I don't want Adelaide and Kerwin to have to hold them off alone for very long."

Kerwin Powell "By all means, you lot create your own ambush, I insist." What had he been thinking, volunteering to be the bait? This hero nonsense had obviously caused Kerwin to lose his mind.

Adelaide took the wheel of the wagon, while Aaric and Kerwin hid in the rear. Oren, Gallindan, Daybreak, and Isabella stuck together to loop around to the 'ambush' point from off the road, through the trees. Daybreak used her magic, to help them 'Pass without Trace' through the woods.

As the wagon approached, the trees that Lux had reported being cut down came into view. As predicted, when the wagon had to come to a stop, three men stepped out behind the downed tree, and another three behind the wagon, bearing crossbows and cudgels. The man that seemed to be in charge, sitting atop his horse, called out to Adelaide. " That's far enough Lass. I'm sure your not traveling alone, so why don't you and whoever you have hiding in that wagon step out and away from your goods. We will pick something for your Toll, to cross our road, and you can be on the way."

OODMHopefully I interpreted that plan correctly. I can make adjustments if needed. Let's have everyone make a perception check, and for those looping around, making a stealth check (don't forget your +10 bonus)
