I've got no idea what the sh16 does on the DICE roll

"Shoots for" 16. If your modified roll is equal to or better than the number afterwards, a little green check mark shows up on the far right after the roll to make it entirely clear that you succeeded on the check. Unless you entered the code wrong, and you're actually shooting for 17...

A failed roll, on the other hand, resulsts in a red X.

Quick last point: I don't think that the "sh" function accounts for "natural 1"s or "natural 20"s.

Great... 3 years of improvements to the bbcode... I really need to look through the bbcode section on the site rules and help page !

Never looked at that myself. I've always found it much easier to learn this sort of thing entirely by doing/failing at it, copying and playing around with other people's code that looks useful.
