Who's Who of Sandpoint

There are pockets of civilization along the Lost Coast. Traditional Varisian campsites can be found in nearly every gulch and hollow along the cliff-lined reaches, and lonely houses sit upon bluffs now and thenódomiciles for eccentrics or the rich seeking a bit of peace far from the bustle of Magnimarís streets. Roadside inns grace the Lost Coast road every 24 miles or so, placed by virtue of the distance most travelers can walk given a dayís travel. Low stone shrines to Desna, goddess of wanderers and patron of the Varisians, give further opportunities for shelter should one of the all-too-common rainstorms catch travelers unaware. Given time, any of these seeds of civilization could bloom into a full-grown town, or even a city. Itís happened once already, along the shores of a natural harbor nestled among the cliffs some 50 miles northeast of Magnimar. What was once a larger-than-normal Varisian campsite in the shadow of an ancient ruined tower has become the Lost Coastís largest town: Sandpoint, the Light of the Lost Coast.

GMI'll be posting links to maps in here and noting areas of interest as you explore Sandpoint and the surrounding Hinterlands.

GMFor the sake of legibility, I left these as large maps. I'll just link to the images so you can open them in a separate window.

Who's Who of Sandpoint

Ameiko Kaijitsu

Ameiko Kaijitsu is best known as the famously adored owner and proprietor of the most popular tavern in Sandpoint, the Rusty Dragon. She is also the eldest daughter of Lonjiku Kaijitsu, the owner of the Sandpoint Glassworks and patriarch of Sandpoint's most affluent noble family. Ameiko was once an adventurer and bought the Rusty Dragon, presumably with spoils from her travels, shortly after returning to Sandpoint for her mother's funeral. This was an unexpected move, considering her love for travel, though it is rumored that she has a secret lover in town... or her last adventure took the fight out of her.

Ameiko has an estranged half-elf brother who grew up in the Turandarok Academy school and orphanage.

Kendra Deverin

Kendra Deverin has served as Sandpoint’s mayor for the past eight years. Lawmaker, judge, and general peacemaker, Deverin has proven to be both an adept diplomat and stern hand when need be—skills likely honed during her youth in Magnimar and adventuring in the region. With a personal—some say sisterly— style of governing, Kendra holds the abiding respect of most of Sandpoint’s people, charming them with her fiery temper and tenacity for justice (as demonstrated during the Late Unpleasantness). A council of several of the town’s most respected and affluent landowners aids Deverin’s work. While several councilmembers have their own agendas and visions for the town, the mayor’s no-nonsense attitude assures that council decisions ever work toward the common good.

Belor Hemlock

Held as something of a local hero, Hemlock is lauded as the man who carried Sandpoint through the Late Unpleasantness. Although rarely faced with misconduct more severe than vandalism and public drunkenness, the sheriff is both a keen mind and a skilled swordsman, and openly proves both when the rare crime requires it. In spite of his barbarian heritage, he is a patient, compassionate soul who knows the difference between the word of the law and its intent, and often gives those under his protection the benefit of the doubt.

He inherited the post of sheriff when the previous holder, Casp Avertin, was murdered by the serial murderer known as the Chopper. Belor saw the town through that last terrible night and is generally held to be the man who stopped the Chopper’s rampage. In the emergency election that followed a week later, the people of Sandpoint made his position official, and Belor became the first Shoanti sheriff of Sandpoint.

Belor abandoned his heritage when he took on the role of sheriff, changing his last name from its native Viskalai to the Chelish translation of Hemlock.

Absalar Zantus

When the Sandpoint chapel burnt to the ground in 4702 AR, killing the town's priest, Ezakien Tobyn, his position in the town was filled by his top acolyte, Abstalar Zantus. While he is a worshiper of Desna, he does his best to help any member of Sandpoint with their faith, and is well-versed in the lore of Sandpoint's six favored gods. It is unusual for a cleric of Desna to stay rooted in one place, especially to a post like his, but Father Zantus is sure to make frequent trips around Varisia, seeing it's wilderness and natural beauty or to visit one of the nearby cities.

Shalelu Andosana

Shalelu isn’t quite a bounty hunter, a survivalist, or a mercenary, but a mix of all three. The formidable elven woman passes through town once or twice a season to buy supplies and never remains more than a few days, always staying at the same room at the Rusty Dragon free of charge. Near the end of each visit, she meets with Sheriff Hemlock and Mayor Deverin for a few hours at the garrison to give a report on the state of the hinterlands before she leaves town again, a pouch of gold at her side. Both Hemlock and Deverin value Shalelu’s reports, since they provide a non-biased insight into how the local farmlands are faring and keep the town council abreast of burgeoning dangers in the region. Shalelu has been a thorn in the side of the local goblin tribes for years, and few in the region know more about them than her.

Daviren Hosk

The owner of the Goblin Squash Stables, Daviren Hosk is most known throughout Sandpoint for being a ruthless goblin hunter. For many years, the brusque and dour ranger served the role of scout for the community, a position he reluctantly relinquished to Shalelu Andosana when the years finally began to catch up with him. Daviren is something of a poor man's sage on all things goblin-related, with the bulk of his expertise focused on how to kill them.

His pride and joy is a large glass bottle filled with brine in which he has preserved the body of the goblin Chief Whartus of the now-extinct (due to Daviren's efforts) Bonegrinder Tribe. The trophy, along with a grisly (but impressive) collection of goblin ears, is on display at the Goblin Squash Stables.

Savah Bevaniky

Savah Bevaniky is a tall and chiseled warrioress who originally hails from a Linnorm King fiefdom on the southern border of Irrisen. Savah is an extraordinarily strong woman with long, blade-straight blond hair that she sometimes weaves into elaborate braids. A former adventurer who enlisted in the Magnimar army in her teens, Savah came to Sandpoint several years ago for a little peace and quiet. She bought the former Deverin family produce warehouse that now serves as her shop, Savah's Armory, with the wealth gained during her adventuring and soldiering days. Fond of remarking that she would have only become "some fat jarl's alewife" had she remained in the North, she is a lively and friendly woman who just seems happy to toil away, day and night, forging beautifully handcrafted weapons and armor.

Some gossiping folk whisper that she is in fact of Irriseni blood, an escaped servant of the Ice Queen, or even one of the descendants of Baba Yaga. Few of these rumormongers would dare make it known to her they said such things, as Savah has been known to knock out rude or insulting thugs with one blow from her huge fists.

Ilsoari Gandethus

Ilsoari is a retired wizard and the headmaster of Sandpoint's sole school and orphanage, the Turandarok Academy. Within the lower levels of the academy, he holds a large collection of exotic weapons, strange maps and monster trophies gather during his adventuring days. He is quite open with his arcane museum to anyone who asks, but he allows the orphans and students of the Academy to spin their outrageous rumors of the true nature of his basement lair, seeming to get some level of amusement from their wildly imaginative theories.

Niska Mvashti

Niska Mvashti gives new meaning to the term "elder." Ancient even at Sandpoint's founding, Madame Mvashti is a Varisian historian and seer. Most of her readings are made with cards or carved bones, but in the Age of Lost Omens she shares the same sense of brooding and dread as many oracles, and rarely enjoys casting her predictions. She lives in a large manor house which was built for her as part of the peace accord between the Sandpoint Mercantile League and local Varisians when the town was founded. It was agreed that the manor would revert to the town's control upon Madame Mvashti's death, but even decades later she is still a vibrant part of the Varisian community. Even in her old age, she still enjoys walks in the forest with those who come to town seeking her wisdom.

Koya Mvashti

The sole daughter of Madame Niska Mvashti, Koya is an old woman in her own right - 2nd oldest of all of Sandpoint's residents. When a violent storm struck the Varisian coast in 4687 AR, Sandru and his brothers, Alder and Jubrayl, emerged from that catastrophic event as orphans. Since Koya had no children of her own, and she was practically an aunt to the young boys, she took them in. While Jubrayl was soon old enough to strike out on his own, Sandru was still a young child of 7 and his younger brother Alder barely 2. She is also known to have occasionally fostered other children, such as an ever-absent sailor's daughter, Nora Ashford.

Koya has spent a fair amount of her life traveling Varisia with a number of caravans, serving as a healer when she was younger and more recently as a fortune-teller. For the past several years, she has given up travel to care for her aging mother and has passed on her company to her adopted son, Sandru Vhiski.

Sandru Vhiski

Only a few years from middle age, Sandru Vhiski is a charming man, handsome and irreverent in precisely the ways that could have made him a highly successful con artist like his older brother, Jubrayl. Sandru doesn’t live in Sandpoint, although he considers himself one of the town’s citizens nevertheless. He’s only in town a few days out of every month, for his caravan is one of the region’s busier examples. Traveling with his adopted mother Koya Mvashti and a pair of Varisian brothers named Bevelek and Vankor Dalmuvian, Sandru makes the trip from Riddleport to Magnimar to Korvosa several times a year. While he makes enough money on these journeys from trade, money isn’t Sandru’s primary motivation—he loves the road, and he loves the tradition. He’s not yet had the conviction to fully become a representative of his people in Magnimar, though, since he knows the call of the road will pull him from any local responsibilities as soon as the rains clear each spring.

It is generally known that Ameiko Kaijitsu adventured briefly with Sandru before her return to Sandpoint and her subsequent purchase of the Rusty Dragon.

Jubrayl Vhiski

The wayward older brother of Sandru Vhiski, not a lot is known of Jubrayl. While Koya soon took he and his two younger brothers in after their parents were slain in a storm, he was far too rebellious to the rules of her house. Thus, as soon as he was old enough, he struck out to live with his uncle in Riddleport.

Many years later, he returned to Sandpoint, only to immediately set himself at odds with Sheriff Belor Hemlock. While outwardly courteous and quite charming, Jubrayl seems to irritate the sheriff and although he is never accused of any wrong-doings, it seems that Jubrayl is always in the company of those who are.

Naffer Vosk

The caretaker of the Sandpoint Boneyard, Vosk is a deformed smuggler with a twisted spine and lurching gait who was taken in by Ezakien Tobyn after his ship wrecked north of the town. Regardless of his past and his sinister appearance, he appears to put his lawless days behind him and keeps the temple grounds in immaculate condition. He is also charged with ringing the church's bell at dawn, noon, and dusk.

Gorvi

Gorvi is the dung-sweeper of the town of Sandpoint, and one of the community's few half-orc citizens. He's paid well for his work, and has even been able to hire over two dozen individuals (not counting those assigned to him as part of their "community service") to assist him in gathering garbage and keeping the streets clean. His workers can often be seen hauling red wagons of garbage to Junker's Edge, where they add to the waste heaped on the beach below.
