Igna ‘Rapid’ Pigro
right-aligned image

Choni had it right. Despite her exotic look, tattoos and pale, stern face she had what it took to get the locals speaking and Igna found that as soon as he had delivered some insight on those behind the doors they knocked, it helped more if he drifted off to the side, smoking, hanging out and studying the sleepy side of Sandpoint through dreamy eyes.

So... Igna gathered as much to himself as the trio as a whole, A cloaked half-elf and several scores of goblins pop up in Sandpoint in some sneaky way, attack, break the tomb and head out through the North Gate? That felt pretty much as a dead end and to be honest, he had since the initial rush of a trail on the cloak, felt his attention dimming for the case. There was something in the back of his mind that kept surfacing like a fishing bobber: Ameiko’s face showing recognition and sorrow when she saw the cart racing out of town. We can check the farmsteads out of Sandpoint North of town... that’s a whole lot of walking for a dead trail but they probably attended the festival too and have seen little to nothing. Igna had been leaning against a sun-kissed southwall as they summed up what they knew and now stood, yawning and stretching his gangly teen limbs, but I think the only logical thing to do is to wait for Ameiko to return from where she have gone and have her explain what she saw on that cart as it raced out of town, eh? She’d probably be able to identify the cloaked figure for us. The next thing he needed to do was to figure out a way to avoid confrontation with the sheriff, We can go to the Feed... ah. She didn’t like that, Choni. ...To Bethana and have a Varisian: Coffeecafea while we wait?

Jubrayl had wanted him to learn more and be a hero for the greater good. If that could be done by drinking coffee with Choni and the swordlord elf, he could live with it. Rather that than facing the scornful scowls of Belor, Benel and Zantus...

Edledhron Guldaer
right-aligned image

Asking questions of the townsfolk turned out to be a mess, though Edledhron was neither surprised or very affected. Since leaving his homeland behind, before that time even, he had tried to stay away from others. As such, his ability to deal with people was very poor. Still, the young thug had pushed this onto him and the elf asked his simple questions in a way that exuded indifference. And for his words, he was rewarded with stories of cats and Tian imports. The elf, for his part, tried to nod in the right places, but he wasn't entirely surprised at his reception.

As the elf continued to fail in getting any useful answers, the Shoanti woman finally spoke up with her observation. For a couple moments, Edledhron kept his words to himself as he peered at Choni, and he strongly considered remaining silent in the face of her question. The answer was obvious, after all. Though he didn't want to be completely rude, if only to stop these two from pressing harder as a result. The elf lowered his eyes and let a hint of a grin grace his lips. His glance flickered to Igna briefly at the young man's boisterous statement, but the elf didn't comment immediately.

Instead, he studied the woman, then spoke in his flat voice, "I stole this name from Tolkien's Sindarin. The hr signifies a roll in the tongue, so it should go ED-led-Rrun - Alternatively, both letters could be silent, or a slight affectation, but it's best not to complicate things too much.Edledhron." He said his own name slowly, though his impassive visage spoke that he didn't care too much. Beyond the perfunctory correction he gave the woman a simple answer, "You don't need forgiveness. I know I'm not approachable." Falling silent again, Edledhron gestured to Choni in an attempt to suggest that she carry out the questioning.

After Choni took over, the people began speaking some sense in regards to what the elf was looking for, and for a brief instant, he considered staying with these humans longer, though a quick jab of pain killed that thought quickly and brought his mind back to the issues at hand, 'A cloaked figure helped bring in carts before the festival. It's possible that the goblins could have been escorted here in advance. And until the half-elf left fled, so carts went through the North Gate, where the pests came from and none were found fleeing through the gate... There are missing pieces... I wonder...'

As Edledhron pondered the tidbits that Choni had brought forth, Igna gave a too brief summary of things and ended with suggesting that the trio go back to the inn for coffee. The elf bit his lower lip and spoke softly without even looking at the two humans, "Maybe they didn't come or go through the gate. There are missing pieces of the puzzle, but nobody saw the goblins there. I wonder if there are caves or the like in this area..." As his words faded, the elf looked toward Choni and Igna again, as if he had just remembered that they were there, "Hopefully Ameiko knows something. Coffee wouldn't be bad, as I organize some notes and thoughts. Unless you had another idea, Choni?"

Choni Kokip

There was a small measure of relief that neither the Elf nor Rapid had been annoyed at her blunt statement in regards to their obvious inability to actually interact with the townsfolk, for two very different reasons. That she became the ‘obvious’ one to do it instead created a bit of tension as Choni was not entirely sure she knew how to talk to the people who choose to live in such a strange way, though perhaps being a near towering woman in comparison to most, along with her soft voice, made only so by her nervousness, seemed to help people both speak and actually get to the point. The details now gleaned made sense and yet also created a lot more questions for the young woman. At Edledhron’s assessment, she was glad that it was not just she who struggled to order it and find the holes she knew existed. That he also carefully ennunciated his name once more for her was also a relief. There was power in names and there was much which could be lost if one formed them wrong.

"I know not else what to do, Edledhron is correct in his statement, there is something else we are missing, but what, perhaps to sit, think and talk, it might become more clear. I still cannot understand why the bodies might be taken, save it disturbs my spirit in dark way, such things are never good. "

If her travel with Doyle and Rapid had been as if she had been caught in whirlwinds which battled eachother as words comsumed the air, with Rapid and Edledhron it was more an awkward imbalance. Chitter chatter and seemed naive delight along side brooded though and tempered honesty. The Elf was not friendly, nor abrasive, he merely was as he was, which left Choni with yet another piece she could not quite place. That Sandpoint had been her destination was now utterly clear and obvious, but the reason, the unsettled thread still continued to unravel and lead her into the unknown. Despite that, to sit once more in at least a slightly familiar location and consider just what the information they had gleaned meant, was the lesser form of discomfort for the young woman.

A return to the tavern, the bitter cafea ordered and Ameiko asked after, she moved to a chosen spot off to the side, away from the bulk of the traffic and looked to the other two. "Rapid...how many ways in and out of this town are there?" It was a start to ask this, if not the North gate, perhaps there were tunnels, or perhaps another way, but she had to start somewhere even as she tried to list reasons in her head why bodies might be stolen.

Doyle Costello
It is not always easy to be a hero. Doyle was left by the Vinder’s sorry remains of a shop and a quest that he had never had a chance to live up to before. The Tonal Heights Temple had been a blessing in many ways, but his practical experience was focused on rose tending and drawing up the exlibris and capital illustrations in copies of Milani holy texts.

It’s no use crying over spilt milk. Doyle offered to the shop owner as he tightened the work belt around his waist and folding his shirt up over bulging arms. Ven Vinder didn’t look happy and Doyle felt he needed to elaborate, I mean... The store could probably have used a makeover anyway. This is probably for the better... Doyle could have slapped himself. Ven was turning red and steaming and Doyle wanted to be somewhere else, Eh.. I’m no use standing here anyway. Better get to it. he looked at Ven Vinder again. His eyes was drawn to the size of the merchant’s belly, it is good exercise. Keeps the body young and lean...

He was away before he was tackled by the raging merchant. He took a walk around the reconstruction of the building and made sure to check on the various teams that helped. He was eager to talk and while he stated to those who wanted to know that he was checking for liabilities (not in their work, but the materials of course), he made a poor attempt of it, because it came to more chatting than inspecting.

One thing he found out was that the men and women working under the sun was a thirsty lot and when he saw someone rolling a barrel of ale over, he ranked his bag and strutted closer to intercept him, Sorry lad. Can’t have you serve that right away. It came to a long conversation. A kind of monologue actually. The young boy probably wanted to get his pay, deliver the barrel ordered and get back to whatever was in his life, but he had put it upon himself to have a lecture about alcohol pushing dehydration and how, if watering down the ale extensively, his actions could serve the greater good more than he could possibly fathom. Doyle brought the boy around to help him water down the ale and find enough jugs and skins to have all the liquid served. Doyle and the youth dragged the ale around and served it. Doyle looked proud and faithful in the act, where the boy looked more guilty than anything else.

Afterwards, Doyle sat down to do a sketch of how the construction was supposed to end, as to make sure that everyone worked towards a common goal, but unfortunately it seemed that he had overdone it with details. When he showed it to the carpenters and foremen, they frowned until their faces looked like crumpled parchment and they headed off with a shrug and some mumbled excuse and a receding recognition of the work Doyle had put into the sketch.

All in all, Doyle actually felt more a burden to the progress than he would have liked and it didn’t sit well with him. He discarded all the things he had been working on so far and fetched a saw to start cutting boards for the exterior panels. That, at least, was pretty straight work. As he stood there, he worked himself through all the details he had learned while inspecting, chatting, serving watery ale and sketching the construction and spun it together in a neat overview. When Benel arrived, Doyle was quick to intercept him and, in proximity of Ven Vinder, give the man an introduction of the process that would leave him perfectly capable of continuing. He took the deputy around the building and tried to build a relation with the man before he asked about the goblin he had put in this man’s administration earlier, I put a goblin, Jijijar, in your custody after their attack. Have he been of any use to you? Doyle came to a stop, I would like to go see him later today? Would that be okay?

Doyle would go seek out the others. Venka, Eledhron, Rapid, Choni and Ameiko if she had returned. There would surely be questions and maybe the goblin could give him answers. He wondered aloud, What will happen to the goblin? I suspect he should be set free, once the case with the attack has been sorted, right? He attacked Sandpoint, but must have been driven by someone else and he didn’t manage to kill anyone... His intentions was to kill someone, probably, but who were they to judge?

After his talk with Benel, Doyle headed around the Restlands to find the others. If that didn’t happen his next location would be the Dragon Inn.

Venka was relieved to find Benel. Ever since Edlehdron had mentioned necromancy, she had a terrible feeling in her gut, and she wanted to get to the bottom of this before somebody was killed. She gave him a half-smile as he mentioned the previous night, but thinking about Ameiko just caused that feeling to intensify. Not being one to hold back from a problem, she jumped right into it, relaying what they had found in the Restlands and what the elf had told them about necromantic rituals.

"I didn't realize it in the middle of the battle, but that cart came out of the Restlands and had the previous father's remains. I was more concerned with how Ameiko froze up when she saw the driver, and trying to keep us from being skewered by those little bastards." She paused then, not wanting to press into delicate matters, but knowing the circumstances demanded it. "I was going to ask Ameiko about it today, but she was gone to the manor by the time I got up, and I don't think I'd exactly be welcome there." She felt the urge to spit, thinking of the bastard who called himself Ameiko's father. The protective part of her wanted to be there for her friend. She knew Ameiko could take care of herself, but she also had seen the resignation in her face the night before, and she was worried about how far the otherwise strong woman would let her father push things. "I wouldn't press if things weren't so dire, but did you recognize the cart driver? I have a feeling that the town's troubles are only just beginning if we don't put a stop to this, and quickly."

Giving the GhostThe mere mention of Ameiko freezing puts Benel at odd's end, the Half-Elf avoiding looking at her. And then she keeps going, Venka telling that the question is something Benel wants to avoid for a lot of reasons. The mention of Ameiko at the Manor draws his attention, giving her a disbelieving look. "Did she? She hates that place. Not the place, I guess; the old man, as you can see. Hasn't been on good terms with him or stayed there herself since... since her mother died, a few years back. That's what got her started adventuring, did you know?" Ameiko, the adventurer: just a teenage girl, in the world. Gods, what trouble she might have gotten up to. But she did well for herself, by all appearances.

It had been a distraction, going into those details, because Benel knew where the question was really going. And closing his eyes, he sighs. "It's not my place, Venka, really. But...." He looks around, as if someone might be there, listening. "Bet you couldn't tell from how they interacted last night that the Kaijitsu are not one big happy family, huh? And Ameiko isn't an only child, though she is Lonjiku's only child. Well, far as I know anyway." He sighs, his arms crossing. "I'm a foundling, right? Raised by Ilsoari Gandethus, the headmaster of the Turandarok Academy here in town. I've known everyone who's attended for the last fifteen years of its twenty year existence. Mostly it's just the townsfolk who want to have their children educated, book-wise and blade-wise. But, some have been pawned off, hidden away there. Tsuto was one of them."
He moves, indicating the crates near the side of the Garrison.

"Ameiko's mother had an affair. Lonjiku knew the moment Tsuto was born: dark-skinned, pointy ears. It wasn't his child. Tsuto was raised by Atsuii in the Manor for as long as they could manage, but after Ameiko was born, Tsuto was pawned off to my father. I'm a year older than Ameiko, so he's... as much my brother as her's, really. She didn't know about him for the first three years of her life, but once she found out, she was obsessed with him, and he with her. They were inseparable. She'd sneak into the Academy some nights, crying, and stay with us until morning, talking about how bad things were at the Manor. Tsuto was always bitter towards Lonjiku, and their mother only saw him periodically, sneaking to the Academy when Lonjiku was away on trips to Westcrown or Absalom. We thought the three of us would run off one day and see the world. But best made plans, right? Something changed in him, about seven years ago. Teenagers, I guess, but he struck her for defending Lonjiku. Ameiko didn't go home after that; she disappeared for almost a year, and Tsuto was beside himself with guilt. When she came back from her first trek of adventuring, she stayed at the Manor long enough to be there when... when the Troubles happened. When Atsuii killed herself." He swallows hard at that statement.

"The funeral was hard for all three of them, but I will never forget that Lonjiku allowed Tsuto to attend it: that was a rare moment of kindness from the man. He almost turned him away at the door, ranting and raving and telling him he had no right to the Kaijitsu name, but Ameiko calmed him down; then Tsuto kept saying what everyone in town thought. The Troubles... you have to understand, the Troubles were a dark time for our town, five years ago. We lost the Cathedral. We had a raving killer on the loose. And to top it all off, the suicide of one of the matriarchs of a noble house.... People talked. Lonjiku finally went too far, they said. Pushed her over the edge." Benel shrugs. "Whatever the truth, Ameiko tried to bridge the gap between them, but it did little good. Lonjiku broke Tsuto's jaw with his cane. That was the last I saw of him, near five years ago. The last anyone had seen of him."

The story continues. "After that, Ameiko wandered, fell in with the Vhiskis and found her gold, and even came back with that white streak in her hair. The divide between Tsuto and Lonjiku was such that Lonjiku, now utterly unleashed in his malcontent, pushed a lot of it onto Ameiko. She refused to stay with him, though I think it had more to do with Atsuii's death than not; Ameiko knows something, I just can't tell what. Just like I don't know why she has that white streak in her hair. But despite our best efforts, we neither of us have heard or seen sign of Tsuto for years. Until yesterday."

"It's him. He was driving the cart. He's older, just pasty twenty compared to us, but he led the attack on Sandpoint. I've told Sheriff Hemlock and he's likely told Mayor Deverin, but they're keeping it hush-hush for now. No one has gone out to the Manor to speak to Lonjiku about it, but likely all he'll do is alert everyone to how 'cowardly' that 'bastard of his whore of a wife' is." He rolls his eyes. "Funny thing. He's obviously had his own adventures. Ameiko became rich and now well-respected because of her own. And here's poor old lame Benel, limping along through life. Who knows, maybe I'll make a good desk jockey one of these days?" He winks at Venka, changing the pace of things. Benel, for his part, is anything but moving on. Venka's questions, and the truth behind them, have distressed him more than he showed before, though the identity of Tsuto has bothered him.

"That's the truth of it, Venka. She'll confirm it, and she won't speak to me for a week for it, but that's who it is. Tsuto has to be stopped, and he has to be stopped quickly. If you're willing to wait, I can go with you to the Manor, to check things out? I have an errand or two to run at the Vinder place, but I can limp along just fine up that hill."
Doyle—The BreaksRed and steamy doesn't even begin to cover what Ven Vinder looks like. The merchant gets more and more irritated the more that Doyle opens his mouth, and it comes as no surprise. Despite the nature of Milani, not all freedom feels liberating. Freedom from your livelihood, freedom from the confines of your home? That's not a good kind of freedom. Everything has a price, and the price Doyle might pay if he keeps talking is a punch to the gut. Those arms may be largely fat, but they would still pack that punch something fierce.

Even Saviors need a break some time, hmm Doyle?

Not terribly well educated in sound architecture (for a frontier town anyway), he isn't much use there, either, but what he does know is survival. Good water is boiled, and it has to be done properly. With so many particles in the air, ash and sawdust and the like, one has to be careful to avoid contamination even post-boiling. It is more successful and practical than his attempts at drawing, which leave much to be desired, but leave the frustrated less visibly so. For his part, he does try to patch things up, and is indirectly successful: there's much goodwill to be handed to him, after all.

Before he can escape to speak to the approaching Benel, a woman stops him. Sweating and heaving, the red-headed woman has a pale complexion and sharp eyes, a familiar kind of dark to them, though less furious. Bringing him a wooden mug of water, she puts her hands to her not at all noticeably curvy hips and smiles. "Quite a way with words, Savior. I thought Papa might keel over with rage. Not that he doesn't have a lot on his mind, and Mama too." The resemblance to either Vinder is questionable, but the eyes have it: those are Ven Vinder's eyes. She offers him her hand, to shake or kiss, to show off long, slender arms and uncovered shoulders, causing her chest to heave. "Shayliss Vinder, at your service. You're staying at the Rusty Dragon, hm? Perhaps I could show you around town some time, so you can get to know it more intimately." She smiles, her lips full. "Even Saviors need a break some time, hmm Doyle?"

Her father, unseen, calls Shayliss back to work, and she is quick to depart. For his part, Doyle is glad that Ven is unseen, regardless of his actual feelings.

Moving to be in proximity to Ven, who now, with his daughter, begins to tear down one of the smaller beams that held the building (and she had better be careful in that dress, working as hard as she is, or else....), Doyle speaks to Benel, himself seeming somewhat off, as if distanced by something. "Oh, the Goblin? He's mostly gibbering, as they are wont to do when scared. Or are angry. Or just in general, I guess." He shrugs. "It's in their tongue, so I don't know it. We were going to call in the town huntress but she's out on expedition, oddly enough. Know anybody who speaks Goblin?" Know anybody indeed.

And off he goes.
Coffee Black, like MagicFor their part, their investigation yields little but a conclusion: speak to Ameiko Kaijitsu, and regroup at the Rusty Dragon, by all logical accounts.

For her part, Choni's mind ticks away. Living on the steppes as she has, she can only think of dark things that might have to do with the bodies of the dead. Spells that might harm family members (though there are none) or locations (the Cathedral could have been burned yesterday, so why steal bodies?). A dark spell that provides a link to a location: now that's a start, at least. She'd have to find a way to link that to other ideas, but who would need those bodies? Is Sandpoint the target? Why?

All in all, the group heads back to the Rusty Dragon, to regroup, and rethink.

Venka hated putting Benel on the spot like this, easily seeing how uncomfortable the whole topic made him, but seeing his reaction at hearing that Ameiko had gone to the manor only made her worry all the more. "Yeah, between the little she's told me, and what I saw last night, I can only imagine. I don't like any of this." She sighed and crossed her free arm across her torso, gripping at her other elbow and seeming to shrink into an uncharacteristically vulnerable posture. "I know she's strong, but I don't like the thought of her being there alone. Bad things happen to people when they're alone..."

The fighter listened as Benel reluctantly began to tell the story of Ameiko and her brother, as well as the discord between Lonjiku and Atsuii. She couldn't help but contrast the story to her own home life, grateful to have been raised by such loving parents. Sure, they had been very busy, with her father traveling and her mother running the store, but she knew she was loved. Then there was Natalia, her nanny, who Venka loved like a second mother. She briefly wondered if she could have handled growing up the way Ameiko did, but quickly pushed the thought aside. Now wasn't the time to open herself up to such ideas, and she needed to keep a grip on her emotions.

To Venka's horror, the story just got worse and worse the more Benel spoke. She could see it in her mind's eye, a boy separated from his mother and newborn sister, Lonjiku's screaming and striking a faceless woman as he had done with his daughter the night before, an argument between siblings that went too far, and too much time passed until amends could no longer be made. An affair was a terrible thing, but it sounded like the Kaijitsu family had faced a crossroad at that moment, and rather than taking the difficult path to fixing their problems, anger and resentment had been allowed to grow instead. Maybe it even started before then, maybe Lonjiku's temper was what drove his wife into another man's arms in the first place. Regardless, something ugly happened, and the wound festered and grew over time. The result of that dark path for their family was the mother's death, however it happened, and the family completely falling apart.

Venka had a lot of questions she wanted to ask, but Benel wasn't the right person to ask, and now wasn't the right time to ask them. Benel identified Tsuto as the driver of the cart, and a different question came to her mind. "Thanks for telling me this, Benel, and I'm sorry to put you on the spot. If it helps, tell Ameiko I threatened to throw you off Junker's Edge if you wouldn't tell me. It's not technically a lie, because I would have done it," she added with a half-hearted smile and a wink. The smile quickly vanished from her face as she chewed on her lip, pondering the question she wanted to ask. "One more question... I can't pretend to understand everything or everyone involved, but I think I have a basic idea. Ameiko's not one to sit back and wait for others to handle things, I know that. She adventured, she jumped right into that pack of goblins with me yesterday, and from the sound of things, she was trying to single-handedly fix her family. So my question is, do you think she would try to stop Tsuto on her own? Feel like it's her job to do?"

Benel let out a long sigh before answering. "She would. She wouldn't go running off without an idea of where he was, but if she knew where to find him, she'd do exactly that."

Venka's grip tightened on her polearm and she cursed before taking a deep breath to try and calm herself. "Alright. I'm going to get the others, and then I'm going to go find her before she gets some fool idea in her head. Feel free to catch up. And, if you do come across her before I do, please pound it into her head that she's not alone in this. Tie her up if you have to. I can't..." she choked back the beginning of a sob. Truth was, there was an emotional tangle inside of Venka that was growing worse and worse, one that she couldn't even hope to begin to untangle. Unwinding over the last few days had helped a little, and the festival had been a nice reprieve while it lasted, but even without the complications since the goblin attack, Venka didn't know if how she was coping was exactly healthy. The strength of her emotional attachment to someone she only knew for a week bothered her. She had always been quick to make friends, but hesitant to form more intimate bonds, and she felt like she would drown if things didn't settle down long enough for her to catch her breath. "I don't want to see anyone get hurt," she finally said. "Especially not her. Besides," she added while striking a pose, "we've got the Saviors of Sandpoint to tackle the problem, in case you haven't heard. There's no reason for anyone to try and deal with this alone." Not really knowing what else to say, she gave Benel a nod, then turned to make her way back to the Rusty Dragon.

Despite how much she wanted to, she tamped down on her natural desire to run straight to the manor and kick down the front door. At least she could take solace in knowing that Tsuto didn't have an ally in Lonjiku, from the sound of things. In the meantime, she would wait for the others at the Dragon and see if she couldn't talk Bethana into placing Ameiko on house arrest for the time being. Maybe if she took Ameiko's instruments hostage, she could keep the woman from trying to play hero and getting herself killed.

Igna ‘Rapid’ Pigro

Eh? You've got the gates covered, ay? Igna replied to Choni. He couldn't very well start telling her about all the entrances they used and he probably only knew a few anyway. It's an open town... The river, the sea, the scalable wall at the Restlands... obvious, direct ways. She ain't no fool though. Far from it. Some less obvious ones too, but to be sure where they are we'd have to check up with some of my.. err.. contacts.

They didn't do that right away. Instead they drifted through the town that Igna had come to love as his home and his turf. Here we friends, the closest thing he could come a family and the loveliest girl in the whole wide world. Just thinking of Aurelia had him smile. The things he would say to her... The gifts he would give her...

He was still dreaming of his time (to come) with Aurelia when they approached the Rusty Dragon and Igna turned to ask his two, very different, companions, Have you ever felt true love? The question was very uncharacteristic of the Sczarni rake, but There is a saying in Danish that goes like this, but I couldn’t find any direct translations. Even when typing it, it looks strange, but the DK saying make sense here what occupies your heart, the mouth spills...

Inside, he found Doyle hugging a cup of water and looking all spry and ready and Venka impatiently waiting for everyone to gather. She, one the other hand, have something dark and stormy cooking. Igna asked, as kindly as he could, as to avoid the wrath of the miniature kitchen queen, for Varisian cafea for everyone. By now, he had entirely forgotten Doyle’s scorn on the black drink the night before.

Doyle Costello
Milani didn’t do celibacy. It was against her will to chain her initiates to do anything specific, other than fight tyranny and slavery. Some Paladins of her faith was so focused on their task for the Everbloom that they refrained from acts of lust, but it was ultimately their own choice.
Doyle had only been with one woman before. It had been a course, as she had put it, in the general education of seeds and fertilization and the preparation needed before a successful reaping. Nepper Tandarah was a gorgeous looking gardener who acted as overseer of the rose garden and both trained with Doyle in his faith, his sense of order and discipline and his skills with weapons... And offered other courses that she deemed necessary.

When Shayliss stepped up to speak with him, he was grateful for such a pleasant sight after all the hard work with Vender's shop. He failed to recognise the direct lure of her words, despite their obvious nature, but instead saw it as a genuine wish to befriend him. He took her hand and felt her shiver, felt her squirm like a cuddly cat and saw her blush. Sweet Milani, she's gorgeous. How she reminds me of... Doyle cut himself off, [i]Not a path to walk when these people are in grief and danger.[i] He gave Shayliss a stiff nod, I would be very pleased, Shayliss, but I fear that now is not the time? I have errands to do. Where can I find you, once I am free of obligations? Doyle answered her like a gentleman and was the perfect mix of heroic saviour and none-too bright cocksure youth. He said his goodbyes, got her number and was off for the Rusty Dragon.

Venka's tale of this Tsuto had Doyle sit up straight and stern. He sat straight anyway, but his body language clearly expressed concern in a very action-ready way, There can be no doubt. We must seek out his family members and learn of where he is. It is evil acts and as it is with those who do them, they only grow bolder with their successes... his young voice held so much conviction and zeal that it could have been the high father Zantus himself speaking of Desna's legend. Doyle was ready to leave at this very instant and he would gear up to make sure it was evident he meant business.

Edledhron Guldaer
right-aligned image

Edledhron's eyes flickered to Choni as she affirmed his desire for more information, going so far as to give the slightest nod in her direction, but he gave no more than that for the moment. He was silent for the entire stroll back to the tavern, in word and in stride, though he kept his pointed ears pricked for anything that might be of use to him.

Back at the Rusty Dragon, the elf let himself be led to a table with the rogue and the Shoanti, and the first words he spoke in some time was his order for coffee. After his order, he wasted no time in spreading his map across the table where he could study his findings. And he listened even as he scrawled marks on the map. He noted Choni's question to Igna internally, though nothing in his posture seemed to suggest that he noticed.

It wasn't until the rogue spoke that Edledhron raised his eyes to his companions, to Igna in particular. The mention of vague contacts confirmed the elf's suspicions raised by his attitude toward the priest, sheriff and paladin. The second question annoyed him, but it was an interesting question nonetheless. He wondered if the young man even knew what he spoke of. And in that moment there was a hint of sadness in his eyes, because that young man represented all of humanity to him, to have the freedom to feel and the elf lamented his own self and his own kind.

Edledhron did his best to push away the quick uprising of his feelings and took a few moments to think about his next words before speaking quietly, "Perhaps we should speak to your contacts. I care for my studies... I don't care as much about where knowledge comes from, however. It is a fool who ignores help for their own vanity." The elf was mildly curious who Igna was in with, and there was the slightest invitation in his words, the statement that the elf didn't think the law was as valuable as knowledge itself.

After a moment, the look in Edledhron's eyes hardened though. The question of love was very personal and he had no intention of answering it, but he continued speaking, "As for love... I have likely lived out your years six times over. And I've seen that love, no matter how true it seems, fades and dies. It burns as bright, as intense and as short as a human's life." As he spoke those words, the shell of a smile touched his lips though his eyes remained as impassive as usual, almost to the point of being dead. There is the hint that he has seen, or perhaps felt love, but that he has seen it die.

The elf, having spoke his part, returned to poring over the maps though he kept listening to the common room just the same. He heard Venka join them, but he gave her no visible acknowledgement of the fact. He would have done the same for the knight, if he hadn't spoke his intention to act. His lips tightened slightly before he looked up, giving Venka a nod of greeting, then turned to Doyle and looked at him askingly.

Choni Kokip

It was good that for a time to continue the stroll back and then to listen to the other two in their banter of discussion, even with the sudden off topic question Igna dropped into the middle of everything. It gave Choni time to consider, to form and think as her silvered eyes flickered storm grey to slate, an expression of focused danger and dark thoughts. While some she was able to let slip away, the thought of a spell to link locations coupled with thoughts of undead and other dark things held her focus. She knew that it was on the right path, in the same way she knew she had come to the focus point of the location she had been summoned to. But as for the former and the latter, she still had not the talent formed to understand the intricate details of why. It was thus on her mind then that she remained silent as the elf focused upon the more unsavory contacts that the youth, nay in truth her near partner in years if she guessed correctly, had spoken of, and then a small sigh as the elf finally reflected on his own tainted view of what clearly had hung on Igna's mind.

A small sigh as tormented eyes fell upon the pair once more, though Choni was well unaware of just the intensity within the expression she now wore. "Of love there are many kinds, the fleeting passions in the snow to that of which one would die for, yet the latter one never knows until the moment occurs if it is of this deepest kind. It does not mean that one should give up upon it..." A flickered glance toward the elf with almost a hint of sorrow before she looked back down upon Igna. "But one must remember that love is a single word to explain many things, of which some bring both joy and heartache, but all are but verses which scribe your life upon the heavens. A love you will die for, though that is what ones such as I render into immortality, it is a rare thing that, a rare thing indeed. Ah no mind Igna, the wild passions are just as delightful and ought to be tasted as well, or so said the Wise Woman of my people."

If the elf had started with the serious, Choni decided to end upon it as she raised her gaze once more to the ceiling above and shook her head slowly. "Ill will and darkest spells, so many things could have been done in the midst of the battle, why not destroy the cathedral as well, why leave it intact, why just the bodies of those who were so closely tied to the place. I fear a casting that might link places, and yet I know that there is yet still a thing beyond my grasp, the pattern forms but is not yet whole. Even so, I do dare to fear that darker days are upon us yet..."

"So we do," notes Benel, in a final parting shot to Venka. "Let's hope that we won't need them and this solves itself, but in case we do need them.... Well, we're in good hands." He seems sincere enough, but heading onward, are they really enough to face whatever this is?

Elsewhere, Shayliss Vinder's smile is intoxicating, but for his part, Doyle is able to overcome it. Professional to the last, while he can't get a read on her, he can read those eyes, those vexing things that hide behind ginger locks, hanging delicately from a sweating face. Heaving, her smile does not waiver as he puts her off... for now. "Right now? Well, last night we stayed at the Dragon, but tonight, who knows? Papa will likely work something out with someone. I'm just a poor little homeless girl now, don't you know?" She winks. "Don't worry, Savior. I'll find you." She heads off, before he has time to do so. Better to have the final say, and give him something to look at to keep him speechless.

And it is something.

Regardless of who or what they each of them speak to, the labors of love that bring them all back to the Rusty Dragon eventually have them all meet back up and tell similar stories: that the Goblins likely have some other way in and out of town, and that Tsuto, the Half-Elf, is Ameiko's half-sister, and the black sheep of the Kaijitsu family. Seeking revenge, he led the attack yesterday. But that does not answer the question of where Ameiko has disappeared off to, or where Tsuto is hiding out, north of town. They may be one in the same, but for now, they have to inform the only kin Tsuto has left, to try and find answers.
left-aligned image

Lonjiku is the last person any of them want to speak to, but it is the only person that can help them.

So, they head out of town. In her time here, Venka has learned the geography of town. The four noble families each live on the hill immediately to the southwest of town, a cliff overlooking the whole of town, directing its water, both river and bay, and imposing down on the town. There are four mansions, though only two are truly visible, with a third somewhat visible. Their destination is perhaps the most obvious of the ones on the hill above, because it is the one least like the rest of the Chelaxian-style frontier houses of Sandpoint.

The Kaijitsu family hails from Tian Xia, from specifically Minkai, an insular nation that few know anything about. Of the Sandpoint Saviors, even Venka fails to know a whole lot, except that she likes the food and the company. The Kaijitsu were nobles there, too, but came here two generations ago, led by Ameiko's industrious grandfather, Rokuro, to Magnimar, where his unique style of glassworking made him very rich, rich enough to become some of the "new money." A misnomer: they had plenty of money and prestige from Minkai, including a number of servants, retainers, and even priests and monks of that distant land. They were as noble as any from Cheliax, and thus, the Kaijitsu were added to the ranks of the frontier city's noble families. When approached to fund Sandpoint, Rokuro did even better and moved his family there. His son and wife joined him, and after founding the city alongside the Deverin, Scarnetti, and Valdemar families, became one of the mainstays.

From there, the story gets murky, as far as Venka can tell.

The trek up the hill takes them out of town, along the Lost Coast, and then up a steep hill, before they see all four houses. Deverin and Valdemar Manors are both majestic, but expectedly so. Chelaxian and Taldor in element, they are prim, proper, and beautiful things, though different in approach, and the Deverins more humble. The Scarnetti Manor, a gaudy thing of marble and ancient architecture, sits high above the others, in both design and placement. It is the Kaijitsu Manor, in its foreign style, that stands out most. Smaller, its walls, its roofs, its everything are utterly Tian in style and make. The garden is full of sand, and the walkway that leads them to the front doors through the opened gate. Before them are two guards: one Varisian but properly shaven, the other an ancient figure, dressed in traditional Minkai robes, with a traditional, if worn, curved sword at his side. Both step forward to meet them, but the Varisian, younger and dressed in simple clothes that make Igna feel he must be impoverished or he's spineless, steps back to let the elder take care of it.

"Tomatte! State your business with Master Lonjiku! He suffers no vagrants or those seeking charity!"

Indeed.

Doyle Costello
Had Doyle been present once Igna started talking about love, he had no doubt had a few things to say about it, instead he found his thoughts spinning around the Vinder daughter and her obvious advantages and the disadvantage that lay in her father. If you see it from a certain angle, the merchant was a sort of tyran and she was a victim... It required a very twisted angle though and Doyle soon discarded it with a shaking head.

Doyle had explained to Eledhron how they would suit up, head to the Lonjiko Manor and ask for assistance in finding the criminal, Tsuto.

That's what they did then. Doyle marvelled at the pretty view, the grand manor and the exotic Tian sensation that hung about it. He had indeed suited up in sculpted scarlet plating with edged and embossed roses and thorns climbing up his arms and shoulders, the sacred morningstar of Milani, petals gleaming in dark pointy metal, hanging by his belt and the masterpiece of a steel shield in scarlet, carrying a rim of sculpted thorns.

He took a broad stance before the two servants as he parted from the group and took a step forward, asking for guidance, Milani, my rose, grant me courage and strength and raising his young, melodic voice, I am Doyle Costello, Initiate of Milani, and we are here on behalf of the town to make an end to the goblins raiding. We believe that Mister Lonjiku has vital information for us and would like to speak with him. Furthermore, we seek knowledge on his children’s whereabouts. Speak plainly, please, if you know of this and then lead us to your master. Doyle pierced the Tian man with his eyes and acknowledged that he was a warrior of sorts, that is for the better. He is likely to understand my request The other one was less intimidating and Doyle briefly wondered what his task was at this manor.

Choni Kokip
left-aligned image
The distance travelled, even if only in truth brief in the scale of things, provided Choni with more time to ponder and consider everything that had been gathered thus far by the others. A failure to know the names and languages needed, left her woefully unaware that the individual was the same that Venka had summarily removed from the tavern, though it would have unlikely had little impact on the Shoanti's thoughts at the moment. Recognition, connections, rumours, details and the nagged whisper that this was but the first step in some greater darkness. One might call the woman paranoid for such thoughts so quickly, and yet as on the plains of her youth, a time in truth only recent, had this been mere raiding, then the cathedral might have just been destroyed and looted. No, the bodies, it boded ill and set the stony features into a darker shade of seriousness.

It was thus her grey eyes took in the pair of men-at-arms, though only one she considered to be truly thus, the other reminded her of a less precocious Igna, someone who would find themselves in comfortable surrounds in the very place of ill-repute that Igna himself had brought her. It was not identical though, the youth at her side seemed, at least to she, to hold a vibrancy this other did not on first meeting. On their approach, Choni instinctively stepped forward and found herself paired with the verbose and virtuous knight. A slight nod of her head for the warrior who called them out, an acknowledgement in the clouded slate which watched him and once Doyle had said his piece, her voice echoed it in a tone firm and confident. "It seems the smallest of details which man might see as naught, has thus far held much information in the greater picture. It is as he says, we believe that your master has knowledge that may help us defend and prevent further deaths, even if he may not realize such."

While she was not entirely sure it would aid, it seemed the wisest thing to soften the words Doyle had spoke, to accent them with a gentle touch of inadvertent knowledge rather than such that one might take as an accusation of participation. Even as she spoke, Choni allowed her gaze to sweep over the building behind the man, over the youth and the surrounds before her attention fell back on the man-at-arms once more. A quick search, a glance for something amiss or out of place amid yet another exotic style of living for the young woman to experience in as many days.

Igna ‘Rapid’ Pigro
right-aligned image

It seemed a few had a thing or two to say about love. Edledhron had obviously lost someone whom he had loved and it hurt. It was like watching one of the show trailers in front of Cyrdak’s theater... there was a pang of suffering that took over Igna’s own body and he felt the pain. He winced and was happy that Choni brought in a more general take on the whole thing. It didn’t feel the same and before she was done talking, Igna had drifted along the stream of her accented words. He liked Choni’s voice and he wanted her to say more. It was easy. It went on for a few minutes, where all Igna had to do was to pry open the Shoanti with a few words on her take on emotions and she would talk and talk and make him feel good. He smiled, smoked and sipped his coffee...

Then Doyle broke it all - of course - and brought in reality and, admittedly, an interesting tour up at the fancy manor of Kajitsu. Doyle kept calling it the Lonjiku manor. Kajitsu! Man.. you need to get your names straight if we are to hammer his door. Lonjiku Kajitsu is the owner of the manor, but it was built by someone before him Igna couldn’t remember who and if Ameiko manages to straighten all this out, she will be the one to take over once he dies. The recent events had made that doubtful, but while Igna and her had never been close or anything like it, she had a way of talking that could put even Cyrdak to his knees and Igna had the impression she could do the same to just about everyone. Just look at Venka and that dreamy gaze whenever she speaks of Ameiko. Hah.

Up at the manor Igna quickly spotted Ichiro - the Tian guard - at the door. There was also one more, a varisian and an odd sight. These days, Igna, Vandrenko and Gunario with a bunch of other Sczarni had been on their marks with the flow of people coming in, but this one had landed himself on the doorstep of the Kajitsu Manor and seemed like one belong there. Igna’s first idea, when he spotted the old Tian guard, was to turn around and get away. It was doomed to fail, but he stuck and turned to whisper a little tourist guide comment to those he walked with, Old guy is Ichiro - he’s... just as old as the manor. The other one... who knows?

Next, Igna decided to seek the answer to that question himself, Buna prietene. Nu te-am vazut niciodata? Esti cu acest lucru mai mare?Varisian: Hey friend. Never seen you around? Are you with this elder thing?*
