@secretID:
Did Briggs shoot at the spawn in cover or did he ready his action to shoot once they come out? If he waited his attack roll would have been enough to hit.

Oh, wow - their AC really is that low. Do we know that they're in cover, mechanically?

delpinator clarified that they have 3/4 cover behind the rocks. Since they will try to board us next turn, we can easily hit them once they move. Cha-kra missed anyways, however.

Just Arro - Briggs was using Duha's Help, so he couldn't Ready.

@delpinator: both Arrogaio and Rhazor are in the water, now? Or is just Arrogaio in the water and Rhazor is pulled towards the railing?

Yes, arrogaio is in the water and rhazor is pulled tightly against the railing.

Can you elaborate on what happened, delpinator? FYI, I'm working off the monster stat block b/c I got the good knowledge skill roll earlier.
They were 30' from the boat with 30' of swim movement. IC, I had Arrogaio take point, but far enough from the edge of the boat that a 10' tentacle attack couldn't reach him after their movement. I couldn't be any more specific given the detail provided. As I understood it, Rhazor was even further back, i.e. behind Arrogaio. How did the movement, deck size, ship height, and their reach work to make it possible to attack Arrogaio - and Rhazor, which should have been tougher? If a tentacle could reach Arrogaio, how would the thing drag him after the attack? BTW, depending on the answers, I may choose use Silvery Barbs to force another roll. The ship is 15ft wide. Arrogaio was pulled to them and rhazor against the side of the ship. If arrogaio was Infront of the others this leaves him at max of 10ft from the water. The tentacle grapples at 10ft pulling it towards the sea spawn. You can definitely use silvery barbs though. The reroll was a 23.

I wouldn’t normally get into this, but I did my best to do the smart tactical thing when given minimum information about the situation and to communicate it, so I'm frustrated. Also, the grapple & drag is just not in the rules.
The sea spawn could only get to the side of the ship without Dashing. Not knowing how tall or wide the ship is, for Arrogaio’s location I said “importantly, more than 10' from the water,” specifically to avoid the chance of a tentacle attack. I would think the deck would be at least 5’ off the water, but even if it’s a raft, with Arrogaio (and Rhazor) getting more than 10’ from the water, the situation would be this: ![]() The spawn could only attack to row 4. They couldn't come around to the other side because they didn't have enough movement. Even as you imagined it, though, I don’t understand how they could hit Rhazor, behind Arrogaio, if Arrogaio was just in reach. After the attack, even with a free grapple they couldn’t drag anyone the same turn because they were out of movement. Grapple just allows that “[w]hen you move, you can drag or carry the grappled creature with you, but your speed is halved.” Without movement left, they couldn’t move anyone they grappled. |

I will say that I can imagine that their movement took them successfully up to the ship's rail and that they are now able to take tentacle attacks into the boat. Nonetheless, I think with a 15' wide ship that means exactly that our adventurers could have taken enough distance, as visible on the map above.
Maybe while we're about to settle dimensions, how high up is the crow's nest? Also, do the sea spawn have cover from their current position after they've attempted to attack inside the boat? And if they have, probably not from the crow's nest, correct?

Alright I've tried to come up with a counter argument but yours makes sense. Yes, the sea spawn are arranged like the picture clawing their way up the side of the ship. I'd say the ship is about 5 feet above the water. The crows nest is about 20 feet up.
The sea spawn have half cover due to being on the side of the ship though the crows nest would bring this down to 1/4 cover. their bodies are still mostly covered by the ship though less so with having the high ground. With grappling at range I've seen both as far as being able to hold at range or having the grapple move the target to the creature. Any movement besides directly towards the grappler though would be at half movement. |

FYI, Briggs does have Sneak Attack because of Duha's presence, and he can roll to hit again to try for a crit.
