Looks like Sill Dice never enter that field of 1s causing bad effects.
This is my interpration too.
To summarize, 1s only come into effect during a Push. Otherwise, they are simply non-successes like any other number. During a Push...
Base (attribute) dice: 1s cause attribute damage, but also earn WP,
Skill dice: 1s are ignored,
Gear dice: 1s reduce the gear's bonus.

I guess that makes moves less punishing than we originally thought, but sheesh, earning WP is going to be slow until we get a stronghold going for some base currency.
Yeah, I noticed that too. Magic seems to get the worst of it since all spells require a minimum of 1 WP to cast. I understand that the system intentionally places a heavy emphasis on survival, but the handicap for new characters is crazy.

Also, we're not that low on food but I can do some hunting now so we don't have to worry about it later.
Unless we cook it, the meat won't last more than a day. And we can't cook it unless someone has the Chef talent. The book explicitly says we need to eat the meat raw... which, frankly, I find very silly. Even children learn to cook hotdogs over an open flame, but adventurers in Forbidden Lands are apparently dumber than children.

I think the spirit of the rule is that hunting/foraging provides food for one day, but the Chef talent is needed to improve the die type of the "Food" Consumable.

Agreed, food won't last unless a Chef can prepare it.

The other thing I didn't realize about Willpower, it's only used to activate talents. It's not like Momentum in 2d20 or Bennies in Savage Worlds; they can be used for lots of things but Willpower not so much.

So Phol's 1 Strength point away from being Broken and starting to die. Especially if he has to make multiple rolls for Cold (like maybe per/hour). The good news apparently is the Critical Injuries - Others table says it will take D6 days, he would remain unconscious until HEALED. Looks like Oniver has the best Empathy as none of us have the Medicine skill. Another thing our merchant could hold over others: "You know I saved your life...." or maybe he doesn't

Hi everyone! Just catching up I was going to help walk through some of this, but its awesome to see you've dived in!

I'll post some Druid lore for Phol shortly.

So... I'm reading this as Phol wanted to sleep in the evening, so he can potentially keep watch during the night.

He passed the survival roll to find somewhere decent to lie down... all good!

Then, without a camp or fire yet, he got cold (after pushing the roll with no luck). Now the furs aren't as good as they were before... I'll think of why in my next IC post hehe.

Phol is now COLD.

Basically, he should probably Sleep by the campfire tonight to heal up, rather than Keeping Watch.

A full quarter of Rest or Sleep heals any non-broken attributes.

Don't worry, its only early spring so I'll only be applying Cold once per day. If it was mid winter it would be a different story lol.

This is my understanding of everyone's current stats:

Oniver: STR 2/3 (from bog fail) AGI 3/3 WITS 3/3 EMP 4/5 (from bartering) WP1 (from bartering push)
Phol: STR 1/3 (from bog fail + cold) AGI 3/4 (from bog push) WITS 3/4(from cold) EMP 3/3 WP1 (from bog push)
Hemdan: STR 3/3 AGI 4/4 WITS 5/5 EMP 3/3 WP0
Old Dog: STR 4/5 (from bog fail) AGI 4/4 WITS 2/2 EMP 2/2 WP0
Stahl: STR 3/3 AGI 5/5 WITS 4/4 EMP 2/2 WP0
Horsey: STR 4/5 (from bog fail) AGI 4/4

It's going to be an exciting night!!

Good thing that Tent worked

I agree that the chef thing is kinda funny, but I like to imagine that it is about the exact methods of cooking, drying, using salt and herbs or whatever to prolong its life. A piece of BBQ steak in a backpack, after a few days exposed to the elements is bit risky hehe. The one day rule is pretty harsh, but you never know when you might run into a chef who can help

To be clear, the thing I found weird is how the book implies someone without Chef cannot cook AT ALL, and must eat the meat, fish, or vegetables raw. It's dumb and easily ignored, just as long as the intended mechanic remains the same. That is to say, each 6 on hunting/foraging roll provides food for one person for one day (cooked or otherwise), and Chef turns each "unit" of food into the Consumable.

If Stahl wants to hunt, that's up to him. It couldn't hurt. Each success (6) would feed one person, and the rest would need to roll their Food Die.
Edit: I misspoke. Each unitof meat (not each success) would feed one person. A success might yield multiple units.End edit

As for Phol, I would agree he should probably Sleep or Rest throughout the night to get his damage healed. Otherwise, he'd be stuck at 1 Str for another day, and if he Breaks the party would need to stop anyway. Hopefully Foxy will keep an eye out for us.

Oh yea I totally agree with that, who wouldn't cook their goodies with a nice warm campfire going! You can all of course RP some cooking on the flames! Not fox meat though.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

So far for evening quarter we have:

Oniver: Makes Camp successfully
Phol: Has a cold and unsuccessful nap

I'll let everyone else decide what they'd like to do, at their leisure. No hurry

@97mg I presume these rolls assume it takes Oniver all Qtr to find a suitable spot to camp and assemble the tent during which Phol was trying to sleep.

Is there an option to help Phol with his COLD - Young Green Goblin skin on tougher Elf like skin They do it in those survival movies all the time

I'll stick to hunting. Even if the meat won't last long, a pelt or two will be useful. As long as I don't roll for fox...

The one thing I can't quite work out is whether the snares or bow bonus applies to the actual Hunt move, the roll to catch my prey, or both. I think both? It'll be separate from the other dice so 97mg can easily snatch it away if they decide otherwise.

So far for evening quarter we have:

Oniver: Makes Camp successfully. Tent pitched! Fire lit!
Phol: Has a cold and unsuccessful nap. Will need to Sleep by the fire in the night quarter to heal up.
Hemdan: Has a great nap. Can be available for Keep Watch duties in the night quarter.
Stahl: Looks like Boar is on tonight's menu! And yes, I'll let you eat it warmed up a little hehe.
Old Dog: TBC

Yeah unfortunately make camp is a full quarter. Kind of silly if you have a tent... but for now we can say finding some dry timber for a fire etc takes a while.

As for helping another PC rest or sleep... I can't find a rule that explicitly says no... and I really like the RP opportunity for some snuggles! That's real team building for you

Given that Hemdan has successfully rolled to sleep, and Phol has already pushed the Resist Cold, lets try it next time around!

Old Dog is free to do as he pleases this evening quarter, keep watch, hunt, preen his coat etc.

With the Help mechanic, you guys are free to request it any time either IC or OOC after your roll too. Its obviously easier to coordinate in a real-time tabletop setting, but everything seems to be working really well.

Love your work everyone! The crazy crew is doing well I'm blessed to have such nice players.

The first part of hunting, where you find your prey via a survival roll, I think the gear doesn't come into effect... unless you've got something that actively helps you find targets. Then the second roll when using the traps or weapons, your gear definitely adds the dice. That's my interpretation anyway... but I'm flexible if you guys interpret it differently.

Nice work with the Boar BTW, that's going to be a nice morale booster hehe.

having only a D6 for food - thank you for not making me roll for it

I am good with heading north again, also happy to join Stahl and his horse if we want to take in extra Hex on the east.

I will add some lore as campfire chitchat and/or whilst walking
