[Hero System aka Champions] Learning Curve

THIS IS A CONTINUOUSLY RECRUITING GAME, AND PARTICULARLY OPEN TO NEW APPLICATIONS AT THE MOMENT, HAVING LOST SOME PLAYERS RECENTLY.

Player NameCharacter NameHero System ExperienceApplication Status

Game Name[Hero System aka Champions] Learning Curve
Game SystemOther Roleplaying Games
ThemeUrban Monster Hunter Fantasy
FlavourLow budget Horror; Serial some lightheartedness but gruesome death is possible for PC's and inevitable for NPC's.
Plot SummaryYour character is a human being living their life in a world not unlike our own, unaware that monsters are real. In gameplay, your character encounters a monster in a life or death struggle and prevails! Only to discover that there is a bounty paid on confirmed monster kills, and the check is large! Having a critical need for money, your character begins to learn a new trade.
OOCThe game will be using the rules in the licensed setting described in "The Monster Hunter International Employee Handbook and Roleplaying Game" book, which uses Hero System 6th edition, and will not be required for the player(s) to have in order to play. No experience with Hero System is necessary, but please do mention it if you have any. For those familiar with the setting, please be aware that PC's in this game will be primarily in solo adventures and will not be joining the company, Monster Hunter International as employees.

The purpose is to have fun and spread the Hero System goodness while having fun. Character creation will require patience and math, however, the GM will collaboratively interview players to develop the character write up and help with (potentially do all of) the math.

If you’re experienced with Hero System, the campaign is Heroic with 75 total starting points (50 base with 25 in matching Complications.

Seriously, the character creation process that I am envisioning consists of you describing your character background and generally, my asking questions like a police sketch artist, and then using a cool product called, "Hero Designer" to create a character sheet. Then we can discuss from this first pass, and adjust. You only need to provide the character name and picture and feedback in the process. If you already know Hero System and want to specifically allocate points differently, that’s totally cool.

GM will post updates a minimum of twice a week and try for more. Recruiting Continually, my goal is to get as many people as possible familiar with Hero System, so solos will be normal rather than playing in a group together. Occasional Crossovers and Team-ups are possible when Players agree. We will begin creating characters as players post in this thread with a character description and are accepted.

Characters will need to have the following in their concept and background:

1) no prior first-hand experience with monsters
2) not be evil murder hobos
3) a real and urgent need for money
4) skills and or abilities that while mundane could conceivably allow them to survive in a kill or be killed, shock encounter with a monster

The game will be set in modern, contemporary San Diego, California, USA.

Character basics
right-aligned image
Name: Alessandro ‘Luca’ Brasi
Age: 33
Profession: ex-Marine, currently working as a longshoreman on the docks.
Financial need: Dire and urgent

Background: Luca was given his nickname because of his Italian last name, Brasi, and his resemblance to a young Lenny Montana, who played the role of Luca Brasi in The Godfather. He enjoyed the nickname, until he read the original works by Mario Puzo, and realized what a monster Luca Brasi was. This was both endearing and disheartening, as while Luca in the books was a cold-blooded monster, he was also an incredible example of undying loyalty. That dogged determination to honor those who have honored you is part of Luca’s core believe system.

Luca served in the marine corps from age18 to 26, where he was involved in three tours with plenty of active engagement with enemy forces. He served all three tours in Afghanistan, including a year in Nangarhar Province, where firefights were a weekly occurrence. He fought, survived, was wounded a couple of times, and eventually earned his honorable discharge.

When he returned to his home in New York, he had trouble finding steady work, and what he could find barely paid enough for the bills, which left him frustrated and angry, especially when he considered some of his time in Afghanistan to be better than his life at home.

Fortunately, after only a year of this struggle, he was extended an offer from a fellow marine, Sgt. Frank Miller; come to California and work the docks, the union takes care of its own, and he could get Luca in on recommendation.

Taking Miller’s offer, he sold what little possessions he had and rushed to the west coast, and began a reliable career on the docks. The pay was steady, enough for a family, and over the next five years, Luca had married and was the proud father of a little girl, Maria (4 years old). Life was looking alright, his PTSD was fortunately mild, he was beginning to build friendships, and could enjoy some time at the shooting ranges. Until his daughter started complaining of headaches, nausea, and loss of appetite.

A trip to the hospital and a battery of tests later, the MRI came back dire. She had a brain tumor, and their insurance didn’t cover most of the available procedures. Luca sold off most of his gun collection, his motorcycle, and their savings that was going to a down-payment on a house, but it still wasn’t nearly enough to properly treat little Maria. He needed an infusion of cash, and he needed it now.

RPRP: Luca sat in the chair across from the doctor’s desk. It was a large chair, but it felt too small to Luca’s big frame. The doctor was talking, but most of it felt like a mumble of incomprehensible jargon. Everything went dull after the doctor showed him the MRI. A large tumor in his little girl’s brain, and it was ‘in an inoperable location’.

"Mr. Brasi, I am only saying all of this because you need to know the extent of the dangers involved in these old procedures."

Luca snapped to attention, "I’m sure you know best, doc, but what else can be done?"

Dr. Hafsi took a deep breath, Luca knew that the next bit of news was both good and bad. He’d seen that expression from far too many people from far too many cultures to mistake it for anything else. Here comes the denial. "Mr. Brasi, there is a procedure, it’s been around for a while, that uses some old techniques, but it is still considered ‘experimental’, so your insurance won’t cover it. But it has a 40% success rate, versus the other 11% rate treatment that your daughter is covered for." Dr. Hafsi looked down at his desk and sighed. "I’m sorry, but that is the way of it. I suppose you could try Gofundme, or some other crowdfunding to raise the money, but it looks like that other procedure is beyond your current resources."

Luca looked hard at the doctor, "How much?"

Dr. Hafsi shrugged, "The exact costs are always odd, depending on how the patient reacts, how the tumor reacts, and how long the treatment takes, but your looking at a minimum of 350 thousand. I’ve seen the bills for this type of case run upwards of several million before. I hate to bear this kind of news, but that’s the downside to the system here. I’m sorry."

Knowing that any further talk would just anger him, Luca thanked the doctor and stood up. "I’ll see what I can do, thank you." his heart in his guts, he walked with his wife to the car.

What the hell am I gonna do? Maybe I can ask the union for some help, but they won’t be able to scrounge up THAT kind of cash.
ooc:I know nothing of the hero system, any links to online resources that I can use to familiarize myself with the rules?

HERO! Dang, that takes me back. I'd love to see what's become of that old system, even if it's not a Supers game.

I have an idea for an angry young woman who might fit the bill for this game. I'll post up some details when it's not SUPER late for me.

Hehe, don't get TOO excited. The last time I had HERO it was...3rd Edition, I think? The continents have since assumed different configurations. Yet I remain.

What sort of details would you like for initial submissions? The usual name/description/background enough, or are there specifics you're looking for?

Third edition Hero was AWESOME! The last edition to have a complete rulebook for each different genre with all the unique little flavor differences, though I was already stealing cool stuff from one genre book (i.e. Danger International language chart and martial arts and poisons; Justice, Inc Talents; Champions The Blood splatbook; Robot Warriors... everything from Robot Warriors was cool! Especially the MASSIVE KILLING ATTACKS! ) to mash into another genre.

I'm looking for a character driven game, so aside from the four main (numbered list) points in the first post, wanting to get to know the character as a person a little bit, so whatever details you feel are significant, and I'll ask questions.

Name: Noah Benson

Age: 38

Appearance, Personality: Noah is an african-american man that stands about five foot nine with a rather heavy build. While he has developed a small beer gut over the years it is evident that he has lived an active athletic life, and while he is for a large part a deskworker these days his hands are still rough from his outdoorsy pasttimes. He keeps a short full beard and closely cut hair that is just starting to grow a little grey on the sides. His nose is a little crooked from having been broken a few too many times and not always properly reset during his college football years, but the added flaw does not make him appear more bruteish. His dark eyes are too kind for it, the imperfection making him a little more approachable even. Most of the times Noah is softly spoken and friendly, a natural people person, but as is often the case with kind people it is a terrible thing to get him angry. Some of his wards have had to find out that he values truthfulness and despises cheap tricks and lies. In a similar way he is quite a different person when he is out hunting deer. Not that he is angry then, but to see him stalk with purpose or wait with quiet patience is quite a departure from the usually easy going nature he brings to his private life and often grim job.

Bio Outline: Noah Benson was born in Talladega, Alabama to a retired air force pilot, who was now a part time flight instructor at the local airfield, and a hairdresser. His youth was uneventful, his family loving. They were not rich, but richer than a good few other families about as they could seee Sundays in church. Noah spent a lot of time outside, playing with friends or hunting with his father at the national forest during the season. He was bright enough in school, but applied himself for a long time until he realised that for most of his dream jobs he would need a degree. All of them revolved around helping people in one way or another - social worker, doctor, psychiatrist, policeman. In the end his grades were not good enough to pursue a career in medicine, but he acquired a degree in social work from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. From there picking an actual job came relatively easy to him. Not being one to just focus on the easy cases he stayed in Birmingham to pursue a career as a Parole officer working with felons. His father, in addition to showing him how to fly a plane, had taken him hunting virtually every season from since he had been around ten years old, so he had already known how to handle a rifle, but carrying a handgun and training with it was part of that job as well. His physique and friendlyness certainly helped with the kind of work he did, but every ward that fell back into their criminal ways or otherwise broke the stipulations of their parole pained him personally.

He met his then wife on the job, who had worked as a defence lawyer for one of his parolees, and things started to move very fast for them. They married a little under a year after having had their first date, a son on the way already. Yet it would not last, as two years later the son was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a tumor pressing on its spiral gland that had already spread by the time they realised it had caused the slowed physical development of the kid. Thousands of dollars of debt later the child still could not be saved. Noah had been chasing after specialists all around the country. Where before he'd never in all his life been north of Nashville or West of Dallas suddenly he had to relocate to the west coast to get the specialist treatment his son needed, eventually ending up in San Diego before the child passed. His marriage crumbled shortly after, leaving Noah alone and borderline depressed, stuck in San Diego with a large bulk of the debt for the treatments in his name in addition to the student debt he up until then hadn't really had a chance to work on either. Drink helped at first, but he was trying hard to not fall too deep into that pit. Burying himself in his work helped a lot better emotionally, and the fact he could work at all, but he was not nearly making enough money to pay off his debts, barely able to pay the interest after having moved into a small bachelors apartment. In fact recently he has been short of his payments often, and the bailiffs came around multiple times to repossess most everything in his tiny aparment. Now he has nothing to repossess anymore and he has started to dodge them as best he can. Ironic considering he is generally the one looking after criminals trying to get back into society - now he was the one going the other direction if he didn't do something about it.

Character Points spent:

Wow, an actual Champions Game, here at RPGCrossing.

Count me in. I've been playing and running Hero System since '89. I feel very comfortable with it.

What are the campaign limits? Heroic? Super Heroic?

Application

Name: Evan Tyler
Age: 25
Background: Evan was only six the first time his family made the trip out to California and he went to see the San Diego Zoo. He'd been to the zoo back in his hometown, but it was a small, sad affair with animals languishing in cages or concrete boxes. But this was something else entirely, and it left a profound impact on the boy. He knew what he was going to do with their life.

Some dreams get discarded in favor of another, and some are checked hard against the realities of life. But this one stuck with Evan for the long haul. He applied himself both in and out of school, getting into the University of Wisconsin's Zoology program. During the school year he studied biology and animal behavior, then in the summers he would join the research program and apply his knowledge first hand.

Reading about the animals, or even seeing them in zoos, was one thing. But working a few months a year as a game warden in Kenya will introduce you to a whole other side of them. Evan took well to the rough and tumble life of in-field observation. But eventually he earned his degree and had to move on. Coming back to his original dream, he got a job working at the San Diego Safari Park, working as a guide for the tourists at the same time he was mentoring under the veterinarians and researches working on the Park's more serious side.

Here's an idea:

Name: Jonathan "Bullseye" Owens
Age: 32
Background: Jonathan Owens started out as a small town police officer in Washingon State. Life was calm until the day of the bank robbery, when he accidentally shot a bystander in the line of fire. The court of public opinion vilified him, and when he was eventually acquitted, he could not show his face around town. His career as an officer was unofficially over.

He packed up and moved down to San Diego to get a new start. He was good with guns, so he started entering marksmanship competitions. He ranked fairly high, and in a few short years became a contender. In the meanwhile he was earning a living as a security guard. It wasn't glamorous, but it paid the bills.

All was swell until he became involved with the betting circles, and lost a large amount of money. He had to make it up, quick, or they would "cash in" on him.

Name: Renata Hodges
Age: 20
Background: Renata Hodges is the only daughter of the Republican Senator Thomas Hodges, serving his freshman term and already considered an 'up and comer' in Washington politics. His wife, Isabelle Hodges is heir to a wealthy family; they met at a fundraiser when he was just getting into the game while in college. Ren has two older brothers and one younger.

For a long time, Renata had resented her father's political life; both for how often it took him away, and for how it seemed to contaminate everything he did or said. Repelled by her perception of his insincerity, and eager to gain more self-direction, she decided out of high school to pursue a career as a policewoman. The moment her father found out, however, he quashed those ambitions; making it clear that he wasn't going to risk her that way, and that he'd use whatever influence he had to make sure it didn't happen.

Renata didn't take this intrusion well. Feeling powerless to affect her life, she drifted without goals. Her grades dropped and she withdrew from her social circles. This funk was shattered when, by sheer chance, she found herself in a position to intervene and stop a fellow student from being attacked on campus. It was, for that moment, everything she desperately wanted...that adrenaline rush, that flush of seeing her actions have real consequences, and the feeling that she had somehow justified her existence in the world, if only for one grateful student. Maybe she couldn't fight her dad and win...but he couldn't ruin what he didn't know about.

Renata redirected her studies into athletics programs and health and fitness, with the stated goal of becoming a physical trainer and therapist. Her father, though disappointed she wasn't interested in law or politics, could live with that. However, she began to prowl the campus after dark in disguise to engage in her dangerous game of vigilantism. On some level she was aware it wasn't about 'justice' or 'doing good,' but rather about asserting her independence and working out angst...but if that could be harnessed to admirable ends, wasn't that a good thing?

In the end what she wanted, what she craved, was a clean break. Real independence. If she didn't need his money or his influence, then he wouldn't be able to control her. How to GET that independence was the issue. Even with a job, affording school plus living costs was nearly impossible without help. She needed a break.

I'll be working on it a little more, of course, just wanted to get a general idea out there. Will I be alright if I start working on a sheet just using the core books? EDIT: And how many points would we have for characters?
This is great! The one thing that comes to mind is how he ends up in San Diego, and I am thinking that since San Diego has a lot of biotech companies based there, so possibly he moved across the country from coast to coast with his sick son to try to get him into a new, experimental treatment after conventional treatments had failed to produce good results. Does that sound reasonable?

As to points and character sheets, you can certainly take a stab at it, however, my plan was for me to use the Hero Designer app to work from the prose description of the character to work up.

It's a little different than a standard game, in that I have not set firm point and complication (aka Disadvantage) numbers, but am hoping to work from the character descriptions and see where the points range. I personally am shooting for lower power, Heroic game (as opposed to Super Heros) with points around 75. The book has characters starting at 200 points as experienced employees of a professional monster hunting company. I want to play with first time, inexperienced self-taught monster hunters learning on their own.

Hah! I really appreciate the work you put into this, but this comes out super messy when I load it up in Google docs. The table formatting is all squishy. Any chance you could stat it up in a more text based format?

Update - Saved it to a word processor file, messed around with it a lot, and now I can read it just fine. Comments ensue!

1) Too many guns. I can totally see Renata starting to pack heat once she finds out about monsters, but if this is pre-monster hunter Ren...then she's not carrying a gun, even on 'park ranger' duty after hours. I could see maybe a stungun or pepper spray or something, in case things get heated...but mostly it'd be steel-toed boots and weighted gloves and just angry RAWR punchface stuff.

2) I don't know if 'athletics' is a skill in HERO anymore, but if there is, she'd need to have it. Running/climbing/jumping/sports/etc...

3) I do see some martial arts there, which is good. Possibly more emphasis on that, if that's mechanically feasible?

Overall, really good considering the relatively small amount of info I gave you to start with! Thanks very much for getting that ball rolling!
