@Daendil @graven I'd be down. Baruch has been all over the place for quite a while, it's not unlikely they'd have run into each other.

CIRLE
right-aligned image
Name: Cirle of House Illythiir
Race: Half Drow.
Class: Paladin (Vow of Vengeance)

Backstory / History: To understand Cirle's story, one must go back into history, to a time where no humans and very few elves remember. The Illythiir, or dark elves, were once a people of the surface. The first of all the elven peoples according to the histories that Cirle read growing up. However, they grew arrogant in their power and were seduced and trapped by the promises of Lloth, the Spider Demon, into fighting for the darkness during the Great War that ended the first age. At this time, the remainder of the Illythiir, as well as other allied peoples who had chosen the wrong side such as the Duergar, were forced to flee into the great dark dark tunnels from whence their Ally's armies had come. There, in the Underdark, they became a divided society with a moral code based on betrayal and power seeking and the Spider Demon, Lloth, their Goddess.

Cirle was born to the High Priestess and Clan Mother of her city. As is common with noble Drow, her father was never made known. She distinguished herself in training for combat as well as with her love of lore and rose to a favored position under her mother's rule. But her lore had turned her into something unusual for a Drow, and only possibly for one of such a privileged background. She became an idealist, taken with the idea of returning the Drow to the surface where they could regain what she saw as their lost nobility. Skilled in the ways of power and seduction, she drew much of her house to this idea, to the point where her mother, the Clan Mother, started to see her as a threat. Yet, never one to attack directly where an ambush or betrayal would work better, her mother encouraged her plans and, in the chaos and confusion sewn by the War of the Black Rose, Cirle led a large contingent of Drow and slaves to the surface where they overran and destroyed a surface kingdom, taking it for their own and enslaving the former peoples (I never said she was a good person, just dedicated to an idea).

In her triumph, Cirle declared her people a new kingdom of the dark elves and renamed them House Illythiir, after the ancient name her histories had used for the first of the dark elves. But these were still Drow, raised in the tenets of Lloth as she had been, and skilled in the arts of treachery. The Clan Mother's tool in this was Cirle's sister, Nookryy, the House Master of Poisons. And so, in what should have been her day of triumph, Cirle found herself paralyzed and slowly dying, taking back into the Underdark to her mother's dark vault of power to answer for her sins. And so, she was left to die alone, slowly, in the darkness, she who had dreamed of returning the Drow to the light of the stars.

But, as she lay in the darkness fighting against the bounds of her own helpless body, a smell of rotting flesh rose in her nostrils and a sweet, childish voice spoke in her head. "Do you wish to live?" A simple question but not a simple answer. She had failed, both herself and her people. She deserved to die, but . . . yes, she did. "Will you swear yourself to me as my slave and priestess?" This was even harder. The penalty for betraying Lloth was, well, slow death. That she already had. But she knew nothing of what she was swearing to and the voice did not choose to elucidate to whom or to what she was pledging herself. But the lessons hard learned in her mother's city were ingrained deep in her bones. Survive, gain power, take vengeance. She had no other options. "Yes, I do so swear." "THEN YOU ARE MINE!" the voice rose to a triumphant cry. Cirle felt raw corruption begin to rot within her veins until she thought her flesh would slough off and drip to the floor. But with this rot, the power of the poison within her also was corrupted and failed and she found she could twist there on the cold stone, not easily but it could be done. "Now reach up and take me," the voice continued and dragging her head to the side against the polished marble, she saw a slim black hilted blade set with a single large red stone, curved and twisted within a scabbard of black leather. Forcing her body to crawl across the inlaid floor and lifting her hand above her head was the hardest thing she had ever done but when she managed to drape her hand across the pommel of the sword, the voice in her mind rose to a keening cry of glee as she felt stolen life force pass from the sword into her body.

Role Play Sample: Cirle had escaped her mother's palace and city, dressed in stolen leathers and wearing a spider mask of an elite acolyte. If she had had to speak, it might have ended right then and there as her voice was limited to a husky whisper. But, the only way out of the Underdark was ahead, through the gate she had built and manned into the lands she had claimed for her clan. A bittersweet escape. And, the gate was guarded, of course. Still, patience came easily to one raised in the Underdark and she waited until guard was at its lightest and dark elves senses at their ebb. In the harsh light of early afternoon, she stepped forth from concealment and squared her shoulders.
"Messenger from the Matron Mother," she whispered.
"What?" the commander of the gate guard stepped forward. Cirle recognized her at once; Mulgnoom was her closest, maybe only, friend in the world. She had been with her throughout the planning and execution of the war on the surface and they had found together back to back in the conquest. Now she must lie to her friend and, when the lie was discovered, most likely be the cause of her friend's torture and death.
"Let me through," Cirle rasped, "or you must explain to the Matron why her message was delayed." (persuasion check)
"As you wish," my friend said, fortunately unable to recognize me with my mask and ruined voice "and to honor the Matron's wishes, I will escort you myself." Detaching a pair of bugbears from the gate troop, they fell in at Cirle's back and gestured her through the gate and toward the new surface city.

To hesitate would be her death, so Cirle strode confidently down the pitted path that led from the hidden entrance to the Underdark until she was out of earshot of the gate guards. Ahead, she knew that there was an area of broken rock and scrub pine where her quickness would give her an advantage over the powerful but clumsy bugbears. However, her chances against her friend with that much help seemed slim at best so she knew she would have to kill Mulgnoom first. AS they passed the ambush point, Cirle whispered, "Shhhh! What's that?" and as they turned, she pulled her new blade and, with surprise, thrust it deep into her friend's back. (critical success)

An anguished scream came from her friend overridden by the saccharine voice in her head, "Mine!" it cried and she felt a rush of power as her friend's soul was sucked into the blade to feed her new God. Sickened but emboldened, she turned on the bugbears with sword and shield. (details of fight omitted) At last, Cirle was successful. Battered and bleeding but with her best friend dead at her feet and both bugbears destroyed, she was able to rest and realize what she had done. Tears veiled her purple eyes and the landscape swam around her as inside her mind, the voice of the God rejoiced. There and then, she knelt and swore an Oath of Vengeance. This was the doing of her mother and her sister, and Cirle would not rest until the works of her former house and her former God lay in ruins at her feet just as her dreams and friendship were. But for now, she must flee and gain power.

Background: Far Traveller, the Underdark is still a place shrouded in mystery and myth to those of the surface.
Feature: All Eyes Upon You.
Ideal: Although suspicious and paranoid of betrayal, I seek help to accomplish my vengeance for I cannot do this alone. Deep within me still lies the dream of freeing the drow from the Underdark and returning my people to the surface.
Bond: My oath to my vengeance and my god override all else.
Flaw: Sees all others as pieces to be manipulated in service to my goals. Hedonistic and arrogant especially toward males who she cannot help but see as little more than servants, soldiers, or breeders.

DIETY: ZILIA, the Jealous Lover.
Tenants: A former jealousy demon bound to a blade now seeking to free itself from Lloth, once he/she has its claws into a person, it consumes that person until they are left with nothing else. Some see this as purely destructive, but it is also an ability to focus on a goal to the exclusion of all else. Zilia seeks to be the God of last resort for the desperate as he/she gains the power to be more than it was.
Symbol: A green wooden staff and black metal blade twisted together like a caduceus coming to a sharp point.
RP Sample: see History/Background section above

Hey Relig, as for custom Backgrounds, yes please do it. They are one of the easiest things to customize while still be being balanced and fair.
Class things not so much I don't mind a re-skinning by changing damage type and fluff or a language to suit a patron but other than that it gets way harder.
PM me with your ideas.

Daendil, the group, or parts of it, could have been together in the war. Completely open to that and I absolutely love combined back stories. Doesn't mean you'll get in to the game but it does mean that if there is a tie I'd be taking the combined background apps.

With the sand box style game, what kind of world building do you have in mind. Can we form guilds, start business ventures, found a house, etc.

I have an idea for a kobold (could also work with a dragon born) with aspirations of becoming a dragon.

There are a few other ideas bouncing around my head.

Craigthulu them be some good questions. Yes you can form guilds, start business or found a house. In fact the founding of a house is currently the hot trend for people with enough money or swords hence the Chaos.

I'll be honest a kobold will hurt your chances of getting in, but a Dragonborn would be great. Wanting to become a a dragon though, that is a character progression I can get involved in

So, I've got an idea for a cleric, but I'd need to add not only his specific deity, but at least one other, possibly two, in order to fully flesh out the deity's mythos. Is that going to be okay?

I only ask because its main concept needs the other deity. Any other myths can be adapted to involve already established ones.

First round of reviews.

Just using Daendil as an example even though the app is W.I.PDaendil:
Nice to have a rogue (which I think the party will need). Enjoying your app so far. I’m really liking your questions about the setting and it shows in your app. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out.
Good formatting making it easy to read.

Those who have had a review feel free to PM me with your thoughts or objections, I love a good debate

ApplicationName: Lyle Brightmoon
Race: Lightfoot Halfling
Class: Knowledge Domain Cleric
Roleplay Sample

Background: Researcher specialty Sage
Backstory / History

Ideal: The pursuit of knowledge needs to be unfettered because otherwise problems cannot be found and prepared for.
Bond: I've been pulling together notes on lost civilizations, trying to piece together what was lost when they fell.
Flaw: I won't hide knowledge from others, even if I know they will do wrong with it.
Deity: Lyle worships Katral, the Eternal Seeker. He also holds respect for Kari, the Shattered Record for her association with Katral. Also, as a matter of principle, and because said deity vexes his patron, he despises Skryte, the Unpierced Darkness.

Deities

I used a design philosophy similar to that of Elder Scrolls Deadric Princes for the deities, so they embody both the positive and negative aspects of their influence. Also, would you like me to include their myth in the app, PM it, or just leave it for now?

@Xalnaga: I wouldn't go as far as calling it a combined backstory, but I sure love to relate to other characters in my character's story.

That said, @WhovianBeast, I've just mentioned Brauch briefly, I hope I have a good picture about him in my mind.

@Drachenspirit, I'd also like to include Scarlett a little bit.

@gravenimages, I think I'll "guest-star" (running out of synonyms here ) Sagra in Kestrel's RP sample.

If anyone would rather have me not "touching" their characters, pls do tell so!
Also, feel free to include Kestrel in any applications - if you want. Don't feel pressured to do so however.

It's not my role to mention this, but since I'm already here...
@Auron3991, @penbeast0, please beware that halflings and drow were the enemy in this war! (I personally would really like to have it explained how you ended up in this group consisting mainly of ex-militia that had fought on the opposing side.)

I think I way way way overstepped my boundaries here, sorry! *runs and hides in a corner*

Looking at the characters so far:

Scarlet would indeed be logically ordered to kill Cirle as a soul stealer.
Kestrel could be a problem too-- she is still obsessed by the war.

Ungrim fought for the dwarves of course but his new patron seems to be opening his mind to new possibilities and, of course, we are both against the current Drow queen.
Lucas and Baruch don't seem to have a clear side in this.
As for Lyle, the halflings and drow were aligned (with the Black Rose) against the Dwarves.

And of course, Cirle is out to take down the kingdom or at least the (current) rulers of the surface drow although her goal was (during the war) and still is, to establish the Drow as no longer Drow, but surface elves so it's more about changing the power structure than about destroying the Drow. Although, it the choice comes down to it, her vow is VENGEANCE to her betrayers, not salvation to her race.

I do agree she will be a difficult challenge to a party as she is still arrogant and misandristic (like misogynistic but toward men) to say nothing of a both a drow and a princess with clear goals that may not align with those of others. She would try to take a leadership role (as she feels entitled to from birth) and have others follow her lead to attack and weaken the surface (and deep) drow until her enemies are dead and her rule is restored.

Of course, then the party would be expect to be able to draw upon the resources of a grateful queen and land to the extent that they believe drow understand those virtues.

I was shooting for a mercurial Doer of Good Deeds rather than Mother Teresa, but you got pretty close probably easy to see him as a shining light in a war camp. I'll see what I can do with Kestrel.
