Maylene Vryn
left-aligned image

Name: Maylene Vryn
Race: Drow
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Patron Deity: Eilistraee
Class: Cleric, Light Domain
Background: Spy
Personality Traits: I look for the good in people and believe in the power of redemption. I have known despair, but learned that hope is never far. I am eager to try new experiences.
Ideal: Redemption. There's a spark of good in everyone.
Bond: I owe my life to the priests that raised me and to the adventurer that brought me to them. Though I will never meet her, I can emulate her example of mercy.
Flaw: I project my experience onto other drow, and underestimate the cruelty in their hearts. I trust too easily because I believe everyone has good in them, buried deep.
Appearance: She shares the icy beauty, dark skin, and silver hair, of most of her race, but lacks the cold aloofness, the cruel smile, the condescending posture. While adventuring, she wears the dark leathers favored by most drow, a thin elven blade at her side and a holy symbol of Lolth at her thin waist. She moves with a coltish skittishness, as if unused to her legs. She stands somewhat below average height for a drow.
Personality: Far more open and friendly than most elves, and certainly most drow, Maylene is gregarious, eager to meet other people and learn their stories. She enjoys singing, dancing, hunting, and sharing a campfire story with companions. Much of her personality was developed in reaction to the isolation and loneliness of her childhood, and there is a sort of sad desperation behind her outgoing nature.
History: Ildan Vryn was orphaned by adventurers to the Underdark as an infant, but the surface dwellers could not bring themselves to slaughter the child when they found him among the drow settlement they were raiding. The party's cleric insisted he be brought back to the surface and given to be raised by the followers of Eilistraee. The priestesses that raised the boy named him and taught him the belief that all races could live in peace on the surface. None, not even the drow, were irredeemably evil. Sadly, In Flamerule of the Year of the Lost Keep, 1379 DR, Eilistraee, as the Masked Lady, was murdered by the Crescent Blade while inhabiting the body of Qilué Veladorn. This devastated young Ildan's optimism and faith, as well as that of several of the faithful. Most of them scattered and Ildan spent his teenage years exploring the Underdark as much as he dared, trying to seek connection with the culture of his fallen parents. The more he learned of the drow society, the more he realized how deeply corrupt it was. The constant plotting, betrayals, the subjugation of males, the worship of demons, all of these things made him realize that he had no place among the culture he had never grown up in. He grew to young adulthood bereft of a society to which he felt he could belong.

Fortunately, Eilistraee managed to return to life during the event known as the Second Sundering, in Flamerule, 1489 DR. She personally let her return be known, manifesting through her avatar to her followers, who enthusiastically spread the word. Eilistraee was seen dancing and speaking to mortals in many places, especially along the Sword Coast. On one such night in Waterdeep, Ildan witnessed the Dark Dancer, as she danced in the moonlight, near the walls of the city, up the road to Amphail. This led him back to the shrine where he was raised, with renewed faith and the desire to become a moondancer and redeem the culture that was his by birth but had been twisted by demonic influence. He formally joined the clergy, one of the few male priests of Eilistraee.

The faith needed more converts so that the reborn deity could achieve the fullness of her power. Surely there were drow still dwelling in the Underdark whose hearts had not been corrupted past redemption. The faithful planned covert missionary efforts for the priestesses of Eilistraee to infiltrate the Underdark and surreptitiously seek out potential converts among its denizens. They were trained in infiltration as well as observation, but for Ildan, his gender would severely limit his access to society and his ability to pass as one of the clergy of Lolth. Thus, the final phase of his training was to engage in the ritual known as the Changedance, which would make him female for the duration of his mission, and allow him to more fully comprehend the fertility goddess he served.

Taking the name Maylene, the newest priestess of Eilistraee ventured once more into the Underdark, disguised as a priestess of Lolth, in order to find other souls like hers who yearned for a life of peace and harmony with the other races.

Role-Playing Sample: "You are far from civilization, mistress...Menzoberranzan is many days journey from here." The man's voice took Maylene by surprise, causing her to start and nearly stumble off the thin outcropping that hugged the cavern wall. She blinked, turning towards the source of the voice and saw a drow soldier stepping out from behind a stone column just ten feet behind her. How in the name of the Dancer did I not see him?

She smiled lightly, answering in Elvish with what she hoped was an Undercommon accent. "The Goddess leads her chosen where she wills. Tell me, soldier, am I far from the nearest outpost?" After a moment's hesitation, she remembered to turn her smile into more of a cruel sneer. Remember, he's nothing to you. An insect. She chided herself.

The soldier saluted, clasping five fingers to his left chest and three to his right in what she took as some sort of mark of religious deference. "Velkynvelve is not far, mistress...I insist you allow me to escort you there." With a whistle, he summoned three more drow soldiers, two wearing dark leather armor and carrying cruelly curved swords, the third wearing crimson and black silk robes and carrying a staff. They slowly began to move towards Maylene, their expressions wary. "Our commander would be very interested to chat with you about matters of the faith. She is very pious and very..." his eyes narrowed suspiciously "insistent that priestesses of other Houses be introduced formally. One can never be too careful."

Maylene struggled not to gulp as the drow patrol drew nearer. Summoning her courage, she nodded and spoke with as much authority as she could muster. "Yes, I insist. I shall be looking forward to meeting her as well. Lead the way, soldier." This is what you wanted, idiot. She reminded herself as they walked their captive guest. Of course they'd be just as suspicious of a drow. Their entire society is based on machinations and intrigue. I have to make their commander feel at ease or I'll likely find myself sold into slavery or worse. The despair began to rise in her chest and she took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves so her escort did not notice. Find your center. Eilistraee has you in her eye. Have faith in her plan.

And so the patrol escorted their guest...or rather, their prisoner, back to Velkynvelve.

Domu Evercrest
left-aligned image
Name: Domu Evencrest
Race: Halfling (Lightfoot)
Alignment: NG
Patron Deity: Tymora
Class: Rogue (Scout).
Background: Soldier (take Deep Delver instead of rank - this makes sense. Not being a dwarf, he'd never earn a rank but was welcome to serve.)
Personality Traits: I can stare down a hell hound without flinching.
I have a crude sense of humor.
Ideal: My city, nation, or people are all that matter.
Bond: Years ago, you lost people you loved in a raid by creatures from the Underdark. They disappeared without a trace, either slain or taken into the depths, and you've always wondered whether they might still be alive and held as prisoners.
Flaw: I'd rather eat my armor than admit when I'm wrong.
Appearance: A lithe halfling, missing the characteristic punch of an easy life, Domu looks light on his feet. He has the characteristic wit and good nature of his race, but living with dwarves has resulted in him not having a smile pasted to his face.
Personality: Domu is a loyal friend, a committed soldier and a lover of great drink and companionship. He'll gladly sleep on the stone of a tunnel if its with friends he likes or loves. He is honest, not a thief despite his quick hands, he doesn't even cheat at cards or dice like so many of his comrades. He is quite stubborn when he's got his mind set on something though.
Motivation: Domu lives to serve the clan that took him in. He wants to keep it safe and see it thrive. This loyalty would apply to an adventuring party that he ended up escaping from the underdark with as well - the two situations are fairly similar. He's ultimately motivated by the loyalty he feels towards his clan, or eventually his companions.
History: Domu was adopted by a clan of mountain dwarves when he was left behind by a merchant caravan. The dwarves didn't find him stuck in a sack of grain until a couple of days after the caravan had left. He was on death's door, but the clerics were able to keep in the realm of the living and he was set up at the orphanage. Children at the orphanage typically either end up living a life or religion, crime, or service to the clan's military. Domu was no exception and ended up enrolling in the guard when he came of age and was no longer welcome at the orphange.

He quickly displayed a penchant for sneaking and being quiet and so was trained as a scout, delving into the deep mines and bits of the underdark to find what threats there were, lurking just at the edge of the darkness. His first patrol was a disaster, and his mentor and many of his squad mates ended up being lost to the underdark. Domu only escaped that fate because he was sent back to the forward outpost to deliver a status report. He searched for days before returning to the outpost. The unit then spent months looking for the lost patrol, but no sign of them was ever found.
Role-Playing Sample: Where has he gone? It's been too long. The stone down here is...nervous. Domu squinted his eyes, trying to see ahead of him while waiting for Thadach to return. He had stowed thea pebble with the light cantrip cast on it by squad's cleric light stone that he had acquired in his pouch, so his vision was quite limited. Why did he leave me here and not stay himself? His dwarf eyes can see in this and I could be skulking my way back to let Thodir know that things are clear, at least to here. Thadach and Domu were one of the many scouting teams that moved ahead of the patrol, making sure that they tunnels were clear ahead of the miners. This tunnel was relatively new to them though, and Thadach was nervous. He had gone back to let Todir know that he should bring up the rest of the force. Something was off. Something didn't feel right.

A slight movement caught Domu's eye and he reached into his pouch and brought out the stone, still clenched in his fist, his other hand moving to the hilt of his shortsword. He slid forward just ever so slightly, trying to discern if his eyes were fooling him or if there was something there. A flash of panic exploded in his mind as he felt a pin prick in his neck before everything went black...

APPLICATION COMPLETE

Bormor Greycloak
left-aligned image
Name: Bormor Greycloak
Race: Mountain Dwarf
Alignment: Lawful Good
Patron Deity: Dumathoin
Class: Paladin / Oath of Vengence
Background: Soldier (Underdark Experience)
Personality Traits: I’m haunted by memories of war. I can’t get the images of violence out of my mind.
I face problems head-on. A simple, direct solution is the best path to success.
Ideal: Responsibility. I do what I must and obey just authority.
Bond: You know the dwarf hold of Gauntlgrym well, having fought alongside the dwarves to help reclaim it. King Bruenor Battlehammer congratulated you on your valor, and you know the price the dwarves paid in blood to regain their home.
Flaw: I have little respect for anyone who is not a proven warrior.
Appearance: Bormor is a barrel chested dwarf with long red hair. He has a beard that is prominent and braided to not hinder him in battle. He has a fierce, determined look upon his face. His travels have taken him far and he is battle worn with his heavy chain mail covering most of his scars. He does have a very prominent scar over his right eye given to him during the battle of Gauntlgrym.
Personality: Bormor is a dwarf of few words. He takes his honor and mission seriously, and does not take lightly to trivial acts for the good of oneself. He will lay down his life for those who fight beside him, and he expects the same of them. He is driven, and focused and cares little for the material things that life may offer. He strives to vanquish evil in all its forms.
Motivation: Bormor is motivated by giving honor to his god, Dumathoin, first and foremost. Secondly, he fights for the honor of his race and his clan. He feels in order to do that, the world should be rid of those who prey on those less fortunate and seek to destroy the good in the world.
History: Bormor hailed from the Dwarven Valley in Icewind Dale as part of Clan Battlehammer. He was born the son of Acolyte to Dumathoin, where he learned reverence for the gods. Though, as a youth, he did not wish to follow in his father's footsteps, as the call to battle always seemed to pull him. When he was old enough, he joined the battle sect of the temple of Dumathoin, with the blessing of his father. There, he trained with a select few learning to draw on the power of the diety to assist in his battle training. He swore to defend the temple and fight for the honor of the god.

When the ancient city of Gauntlgrym was found to be overrun by evil, Bormor took up the call and marched with his brethren under the leadership of Bruenor Battlehammer. He assisted in the fight, but so many of his kin were lost. When the battle turned poor and seeing the undead rise again to aid the dwarves, Bormor strengthened his resolve and fought with a ferocity that only Dumathoin could instill. So many Ashmadai fell to his hammer, and he was there as witness when Bruenor was slain. Near death, Bruenor honored Bormor for his skill and beseeeched him to continue his fight against evil.

In the 25 years since the battle of Gauntlgrym, Bormor returned to the Dwarven Valley to continue his training. Once complete, he was sent out on his holy quest to complete his holy quest. He swore to restore the honor of the dwarves in Dumathoin's name by vanquishing the most evil of creatures. He set out in search of the drow that attempted to establish themselves within the ancient stronghold of Guantlgrym. It was in the foothills of the Crags that Bormor was taken prisoner and brought into the Underdark.
Roleplay Example: The Capture

Name: Shadow of the Abyss (Shadow)
Race: Tabaxi (Volo's)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Patron Deity: Cat Lord
Class: Monk (Way of the Shadow) Multiclass with Rogue (Assassin).
Background: Spy
Personality Traits 1: I am a font of random trivia from the lore and stories I have discovered.
Personality Traits 2: I don't pay attention to the risks in a situation. Never tell me the odds.
Ideal: There's a spark of good in everyone.
Bond: I'm trying to pay off an old debt I owe to a generous benefactor.
Flaw: If there'saplan,I'll forget it. If I don'tforget it,I'll ignore it.

Back StoryPersonality: Shadow is the opposite of his name. He is as sunny as a summer day. He doesn't let anything cloud his judgement, even when terrible things happen. He never lets his past affect him. He tries to do things positively, even if things seems hopeless. One of the only things notable on him is his incessant capabilities to draw a trivia related to anything in front of him, literally a chatter-box cat. Though one cannot be sure if the trivias he tells are true or was made-up by him.

Motivation: His life was saved by the House of Spies. When he was a small kitten, his whole clan was raided by the orcs. The House of Spies came and saved him from the hands of the orcs. But unfortunately his clans has been taken as slaves. Nevertheless he is eternally grateful to the House. Now he trains as a spy and hopes to find the orc warband that captured his clan and render retribution.

History: He grew up to a lore-loving clan in the ridge of a mountain. When he was born, an oracle from their Shaman told his parents that his life will be under a shadow. And so, his parents gave him his name Shadow of the Abyss. They believed that he has a special purpose. As he grow up, they told him all the lores and legends they know, from the smallest creatures to the humongous creatures, from the noble elves to the powerful dragons, everything they know they passed to him. And he soon loved learning different lores and legends. But the fateful thing happened and an orc warband raided their clan. Everything was destroyed and all of them taken. His mother hid him and told him not to come out. But due to the fear of losing his family, he got out of his hiding place. Remaining orcs saw him and captured him. He was about to be taken to the camp when Heroes came, calling themselves House of Spies, saved him. He has been given a new leash in life and he made an oath to find the warband that took his family from him and give justice and retribution befitting them.

Role-Playing Sample: "Shadow," a hooded figure talked to him. "I will be giving you one of the most dangerous jobs the House will ever have. I need you to know what is happening in the City of Spiders. "

"City of Spiders Master? Spiders are eight legged-insects who lays eggs. And they create webs as their house. In those webs they also lure their prey to be eaten. What do I need to find out? Will I get eaten by Spiders?" He talked non-stop.

The House Master look at him calmly, "No Shadow, you will not get eaten. Last month the House sent an agent there to investigate, but alas, we have received no update until now.. We need you to get caught by the Drows and have yourself delivered by them to the city. " He explained.

"Drows, they are cast-outs of the elves, breakers of oath and cursed by the Elven Gods. Why the Drows master?" He asked.

"The relationship between the Drows and the City is deep and is still under investigation. In that aspect you might investigate it too." His Master answered back. "I need you to infiltrate, get whatever knowledge you can find and report back here. If you can find something about Agent Ruff or able to get in touch with him, all the more better for the House and for you."

"Ok Master! I follow the will of the House! The House of Spies, the Greatest House that no one knows or will ever know. Hail the House!" Shadow replied. He went to his room and prepared himself to his next great adventure and probably his hardest. But he must live this, or else he won't be able to get his justice, justice he is looking-forward after this.

Name: Buddle Cobbleshaper

Race: Svirfneblin

Alignment: Neutral

Patron Deity: The Watchful Protector, Garl Glittergold

Class: Wizard (Illusionist)

Background: Guild Artisan (Gemcutter)

Personality Traits:1) I always compare sums to a value in gems.

2) I find a reason to believe and disbelieve anything anyone says.

Ideal: Meddling in the affairs of others only causes trouble.

Bond: I created a great work for someone, and then found them unworthy to receive it. I'm still looking for someone worthy.

Flaw: I'm quick to assume that someone is trying to cheat me.

Appearance: Gray layered upon gray highlighted by a touch of gray with beautiful gray eyes that match the subtle undertones of gray in his cheeks. He's gray.

Personality: Buddle is a bit more dour and a bit less trusting of others than most Svirfneblin. He's not grumpy but he is argumentative and stubborn. While he prefers to be alone, he cannot help but interject in the conversations of others. While he wishes to remain aloof from the troubles of others, he cannot help but point out the folly of their decisions whereby entangling himself into their business.

Back StoryMotivation / History: Schada Orebiter. She may not have been the prettiest Svirfneblin in Blingdenstone but there was something about how the one corner of her mouth ticked upwards just a bit when she talked that Buddle was mesmerized by. No matter that he was just a common gem carver and she the daughter of a counciler. Buddle was in love.

To show his immense love he set about to shape the most lovely gem he could find. While he couldn't get his hands on a perfect stone, he felt he didn't need one. The cut of the gem would be his gift. A showing of his skill. To take an imperfect rock and make it a thing of beauty. He set about with a flawed white opal, to match the wondrous shade of Schada's eyes, carving and polishing the stone with a masterful cut that took the young gnome almost ten years to finish.

So engrossed in his endeavor, he ignored the chatter that Schada was engaged to another councilor's son and was to be wed soon. His finished stone in hand, Buddle walked right up to her door and rapped his knuckles upon the stone. He presented his gift that he had worked ten long years on and all Schada could say upon seeing it was, "Eh, there's sand in that stone. What do you want me to do with that?!"

Her gaze had gone directly to the flaw and she had not taken in the beauty and intricacy of Buddle's cut. Hanging his head, the young gnome slowly walked back through Blingdenstone to his own quarters. It was then he vowed to find a stone worthy of her affection. He signed up for a mining expedition into the wilds with the intent of finding the perfect stone to complement his skill.

The expedition was doomed as they were sacked by drow with Buddle the lone survivor, taken to Velkynvelve as a slave. What a fool he had been. If Schada could not see the beauty of his work through the taint of a flaw, she didn't deserve his love. Too late he had reached his conclusion for now he sat chained in a drow camp awaiting transport to the dread city of Menzoberranzan.

Role-Playing Sample: Most of the other Svirfneblin had been on edge for the entirety of the mining operation. Too close to Menzoberranzan they would say over and over but Buddle paid them no heed. He was on a mission of the utmost importance, to secure the love of Schada by finding a beautiful stone he could cut and present to her as a token of his affection.
Rubbing the opal in his pocket, he chastised himself for being so foolish to think he could get away with a flawed stone as a gift no matter the skill of his cut.

"Watch your ceiling, Buddle. Loose rock could spell your doom and I'll not lose a gnome on this venture," called Burrow Warden Geodeskin, the leader of their expedition.

Buddle knew the warden was right, that rock was barely holding on but Buddle couldn't help but argue. "It has to remain so that I can continue digging straight away here. I'm certain there's something fantastic just a few more ticks through this rock."

The warden refused the excuse, "It'll take more time, yes, but get that rock out safely and re-shore your tunnel before carrying on forward. Better safe than sorry, Buddle."

"If we were putting safety first, we wouldn't be so close to Menzoberranzan," was Buddle's reply before he could stop himself from speaking. He held his breath, waiting for an angry retort from the warden but none came.

"Geodeskin? You still there?" Curiously peering down the tunnel, Buddle found himself walking back out to the passage proper where the other gnomes were filling carts full of ore. It was quiet. Not a sound. No tick tick tick of the chisels and picks upon the stone passages or heavy breathing of laborers moving ore.

And then they were upon him and Buddle thought his short life had come to a close. So foolish had he been to place himself in harm's way just to find a stone for an ungracious girl. Oh, to be back in his workshop with a brush and polishing stone instead of in the wilds at the mercy of the most fearsome creatures in the Underdark, the drow.
