Thanks, leo.

Who would have been the primary defender of the north and Valejo before they were recently abandoned? Would any kindgoms or city-states have been expected to play a major role? Or would it be a matter for the central imperial government?

Valejo has a regular garrison of soldiers who serve as guards and perform day to day security and law enforcement duties under the authority of the Mayor, Ulfgar Strafgen. However, recently, large numbers of Troll incursions have severely tested these defenses and when Ulfgar called for imperial forces to bolster their defenses and repel the waves of attacks, Barbarians and bandits took advantage of these strained conditions to further encroach upon the city's ability to defend itself adequately. Valejo is the largest center in the north and though it holds some influence over Strathwood and Chantry, the other two larger settlements in the north, it holds no formal authority over them.

Being a northern settlement, Valejo has limited ability to produce its own food supplies and has always been dependent on trade with the southern kingdoms to feed itself. Bandit incursions on these shipments has seriously threatened the survival not only of Valejo itself but of all the northern settlements.

Valejo is very much a part of the Empire and fully expected to receive the aid it called for, however, it never came. What events, if any, precipitated these events is not known by the player characters as we begin our tale.

One more: The empire is obviously not a nice place, but there also seem to be legitimate external security threats (namely greenskins and giants) as well. What would a soldier in the armies of the empire expect to see in their service? Bloody putdowns of peasant uprisings? Border defensive actions driving off (and then enslaving) orcs and the like? Would the soldier have a fair bit of choice over where physically he serves and therefore what he's likely to be doing?

EDIT: Kind of set on the retiring soldier background, just wondering what sort of range of personalities and alignments might make sense.

Has enough money and sense to have fancier clothes for when necessary.

First draft, still a work in progress... There is still a lot more to adjust and write. I will likely be finished sometime by the end of the week.

Name: Katherine Nightgale
Race: Human
Class(es): Bard (Arrowsong Minstrel) 10
Intended Role: Buffer, minor damage dealer
Alignment: NG
Physical Description: Katherine is to a fault a noble. You can see it in how she cares for herself, in the clothing that she wears, and the air of command that seems to follow her around. Her hair is a deep mahogany, pulled back into loose crown to wrap around the back of her head with the rest of her long hair flowing out behind her. Her eyes are a deep emerald, striking in their intensity when she focus on someone.

Her clothing is often in the colors of her family, forest greens and browns which almost matches the colors of her hair. The crest of her house, a mighty oak tree set upon a shield graced with runes. Across her back she keeps her bow, likely the only thing that sets her apart from other noble women.

Personality: Katherine is at best, the black sheep of House Nightgale, or in the eyes of others viewed as one of the few remaining sparks of hope in a noble house which is in decline. She carries her family legacy in what she chooses to do, even at the disapproval of her father whom much would rather have her married off to secure an alliance. She always believed that she was destined to do more than be a consort of another noble to improve the Nightgale line.

Background:

Mariana is finished! Click here for character sheet!

Name: Mariana
Race: Half-Elf (Fey Magic)
Class(es): Sorcerer 1 (Fey Bloodline) / Ranger 7 (Guide) / Arcane Archer 2
Intended Role: Ranged damage dealer; secondary skill monkey / battlefield control
Physical Description: Mariana is about as short as a half-elf can be, with long raven-black hair braided back for convenience, and eyes that change with the season like leaves. But what people usually notice first about her is her bow - because it's alive, growing tiny leaves in spring that thrive in summer, fade in fall, and die off in winter. Her clothing is rough and serviceable, and her manners are ... if not coarse, certainly not genteel.
Personality: Mariana sees herself as a thing apart. She is courteous to those who respect the forest, and merciless to those who do not; until she knows which a person will prove to be, she makes few overtures of friendship. Still, when nations go to war, nature generally loses... and the forests are a symbol of Gaia's victory in the last war. It's inevitable that a resurgence of giants, trolls, and the like will impact the forest sooner rather than later. So as our story begins, she ventures forth from her beloved woodlands to answer the Mayor's call...
Alignment:I was going CG, but the more I thought about the character, the more she is a thing apart. Her loyalty is to the forest. Those who can't respect it will find her an enemy, regardless of their intentions.True Neutral
Background: Mariana grew up dirt poor--not entirely homeless, but familiar with back streets and rooftops in a way typical of children who beg to keep their bellies full. When she came of age, she found that her natural agility and daredevil skills were actually desired in the military--and a life as a Wanderlord sounded a good deal less dangerous than a life on the streets. (Maybe that was the recruiter overselling it.) Her duties carried her to the forests more often than not, and she came to find herself more at home there than in the city; even spending her leave time there by preference. On her last mission at the end of her tour, she was sent to retrieve an artifact from some ruins, which she did; and alongside the artifact was a darkly magical cloak, which she kept for herself. With it she invented a new role for herself... protecting the forests, like she always did, but now on her own terms.

Valejo is located in a subarctic Taiga region, so forested hilly region with some mountainous areas.

Name: Jiro Kogi
right-aligned image

Race: Kitsune
Class(es): Samurai (Warrior Poet)
Intended Role: Scout, Mobile Melee Assassin
Physical Description: A lithe, supple body that hides beneath its fur a sinewy strength. Jiro is an amalgamation of dancers grace, and a warriors strength. Years of training have honed his body into a weapon of terrible beauty and perfect form.
Personality: While handsome and certainly charismatic, with enough confidence for ten men, Jiro rarely talks or interacts directly with others unless needed. Words are of no worth, actions are what make the man. Though his words are few, and the meaning cryptic, there is obvious wisdom in his manner and intent. Such is his force of personality that what few words he uses often carry great weight.
Background:

Alignment: NG (formerly CN)

Bump: What sort of duties would a career soldier of the empire likely find themselves engaged in? Repression of internal unrest? Guarding borders and fighting raiders? Other?

And how much influence would a career soldier have over what unit they're in and where they're posted?

Also, not sure what you did MrJG but on mobile I can't touch any of your app text or even open up your background spoiler without being redirected to your character portrait. It's a nice picture but it keeps on getting pushed in my face every time I try and see something else

Hmm... I had answered this on my mobile but apparently it didn't take heh.

There would be some amount quelling uprisings but soldiers' day to day lives would depend on which division of the military they served in. There are three main divisions:

Regular Army

These would do some quelling of uprisings though these tend to be few and far between. Most of their time would be spent training and serving on patrols or providing extra security for places who need more than what their regular garrison can provide. This could be because of a rise in greenskin incursions or other unexpected threats which appear in various areas of the empire. Over the past few years, there has been a particular Githyanki threat which has been taking up some of the military resources though so far the attempted invasion has been kept secret from the civilian population. Those who have served know that something is going on though they have strict orders not to talk about it. Few know the full scope of what is actually happening, however.

Navy

Provide transportation for Regular Army and patrol the waterways and keep it clear of bandits and pirates. The Naval Division often provides escorts for wealthy merchant fleets or even passenger ships for profit. This emperor is very profit oriented so every opportunity to redistribute wealth to the imperial coffers is seized.

Arcane Division

This is a much smaller division and is comprised of Arcane Wizards and other casters who are trained and recruited from the nearby College of Delmer-Nar. The college is located on a small island near the capital metropolis of Dusk and is a steady source of applicants for the Arcane Division.

Wanderlord Division

The Wanderlord Division serves as a Special Forces of sorts for the Imperial army and is comprised of elite soldiers from every field. There are warriors, casters, priests of every kind in this division and they perform special ops such as recon and exploration, assassination, rescue missions, VIP escort missions, and other tasks which may require "adventurers" to accomplish such as retrieving rare valuable items from ancient ruins for the empire.

That should cover what the military does in a broad sense.

Hmm, no idea what happened. I looked on mobile and I’m not having an issue with it. Perhaps it’s the browser, have you tried desktop mode?
