Mikki shakes her head, indicating that she is, indeed, not familiar with the murderer artist. My pa an' me don't 'ave much use fer arteests.

Kala hesitated. She was a stranger to these parts, but she'd heard something muttered when she asked about some apparently scarred wooden beams on a building... "Wasn't he that murderer?"

Jumping to conclusions, Mikki automatically takes offense at Kala's words. My pa ain't no murderer. That man 'e kilt was in self-defense.

It were winter when the chopper kilt folks. 25 victims in all. He was real good at avoiding ole Sheriff Avertin. The Sheriff caught him as a last act. Last act because he were the Chopper's last victim. He died fighting the Chopper, but he did him one good in return. The Chopper was bleeding so much a child could follow that trail. A trail that led straight to the stairs of Stoot’s Rock. The guards thought that Jervis Stoot, a local artist was a victim. When they searched the fellow's home they realized that he was the Chopper. They found the eyes and tongues of 25 victims on some sort of bird altar. Chopper had cut out his own as a final altar before he died. So they burnt that place to the ground. They blessed ole Stoot's ashes and scattered them to make sure his ghost didn't come back all evil and strong.
Maybe it didn't work. Maybe it did. All I hear is that not long after a terrible fire came down on us. The fire kilt the town's priest Ezakien Tobyn and his adopted daughter, who was one of them aasimar folk. All that's left of them there Stoot carvins are scars on different places. His statues that he had carved were chopped to bits by hatchets so that owners could get rid of the memories of Stoot.

"Not your papa," Kala said absently. "I was remembering what I'd heard." She considered the tale, now told afresh. It troubled her deeply. "You say that a fire killed Tobyn? Perhaps it wasn't simply coincidence that it happened so soon after... 'Chopper'."
Her head turned in that approximate direction, as though she was trying to pierce the darkness of her vision. "I think it may be that we should go to this madman's isle." Belatedly she realised that there was little reason they should accompany one another, other than that they all hoped to get to the bottom of this mystery and find out the perpetrators of the raid.

Oh yeah, I remember that now. What do ye think that ol' dead killer's got to do wit' this gobbo attack?

Able took a slow draw on his pipe as he listened. The tale was... informational, with a hint of an attempt to impress and perhaps scare. Overall there were many similarities to the acts of his own people; butchery and mutilation being the two items that stood out most. Such things wouldn't have even phased his tribe assuming the power structures were left untouched or made even more powerful. To these humans, such a man was a monster.
The half-orc exhaled, pushing the smoke through his nostrils as he did so. "Ugly business. My knowledge of the restless dead suggests that if this Chopper did rise from the grave to exact vengeance through conflagration that someone put an end to it quickly. Undead are not known to go peacefully back to their graves on their own so quickly. That you mention no other heroes leads me to two separate conclusions. One: Chopper's undead form lives, yet bides its time for some inscrutable reason. Trapped perhaps. or two: The fire had nothing to do with Chopper. Perhaps an accident. Perhaps something more sinister. Ugly business either way."

"Either way it needs to be looked at" Narmellion said suddenly, looking at them. Findal nodded on his back.
"Let us go then. The sooner we deal with this the sooner we can get back to where the goblins came from. They obviously didn't get what they wanted so I don't expect them stop till they do" |

"If we find nothing at the Isle, we can move on to search the Old Light instead," Kala agreed, though she was frowning. "You mentioned a 'bird altar'? I have seen a shrine to Barbatos. I wonder if it is similar." She paused to look out over the appropriately named Junker's Edge, trying to pierce the darkness of her

Unfortunately, the cliff is higher than her sight will allow. Try as she might, Kala can't even see the refuse at the bottom. Sadly, such limitations do not also apply to her sense of smell.
Getting to the island is easier said than done. More of a peninsula than an island, the former home of the notorious murderer is separated from the rest of the town by the cliffs. To get to the island, one must either climb down the cliffs next to the Old Light, or take a boat from the harbor up and around the west side of the town. And as the old stairs that were put in for Stoot were burned down, one must still climb up the side of the island afterwards.

Able takes another puff on his pipe, creasing his brow in thought as he does so. It takes him a moment to sort out the sudden high pitch of the halfling's voice. He isn't sure what it is about halflings, but it seemed to him that their speech patterns were always just a tad quicker than he prefered, as if they'd lose the thought entirely if they didn't get it out right away.
This conversation suddenly felt slightly confused. "Narmellion is it? Are you suggesting investigating a fire that occurred over a year ago before looking into the immediate issue of the goblin's attack?" The half-orc glances down at scrawny form of Dugmink. "No insult intended. Secondly, how do you know that goblin attack was a failure? By this one's own admission the attack was a diversion more than anything else for the advantage of the mysterious Varisians, who I expect got exactly what they wanted. What they could want with the body of a year-dead priest though leads to unfortunate possibilities. I would expect some sort of blaspheme; a desecration perhaps or fell animation." Able taps his pipe thoughtfully against one of his tusks. "There is a possibility that our Varisians have holed up in one of these Orc=Place of evil memoryGaudtra, but I would find the intelligence of such a one to be suspect."

Findal was use to not being noticed. So he waved from atop the strange creatures shoulders.
"I am Findal. He" Findal said, pointing down at his outsider friend. "...is Narmellion" At that the strange troglodyte like creature nodded and spoke in a strange raspy voice. "I think that information is power. And as of now we have little of either. If you think that time is better spent making palisades and sharpening weapons then I am willing to do so. My purpose here is to follow the commands of my master and companion. That much has not changed since last I walked the surface of this world. Believe me though. Goblins do not stop trying to take as long as there is something to be taken" He said, the wisdom of his words obvious. "The discussion here is moot either way. Actions bring about change. Not thoughts alone" At that Final winked at Able, starting to kick his feet like a child as Narmellion looked up to him with a toothy smile. Last edited by Saidande; May 25th, 2011 at 01:25 AM. |

"I believe he referred to the mysterious fire because it was how Father Tobyn met his end." Kala smiled, perhaps a little strangely. "Setting a fire to best a foe or hide evidence is not an uncommon tactic. But he is right. Let us take the stairs, since they pass by the ruins, and since we do not wish to attract undue attention by requesting passage via boat." With that she set off.
