Sass, you want me to hold while the others conclude their encounter or press Barnabas on?

Press on; I see no reason to hold off just yet. They'll have plenty to discuss with the guards, and I'll mess with the time issues that might be posed by sneaking away.

Huhart, that was a critical! You should roll the extra damage. I know it doesn't matter, since the 10 was enough, but there's no kill like overkill.

I thought Crits didn't apply to spells, but okay!

Critical-damage rules apply to anything that deals damage via an attack roll, whether that be a weapon attack roll or a spell attack roll. ^_^

Vraiment. Crits are also instantaneous in 5e! No rolling to confirm.

So, if the Faerie Fire spell hit, that scimitar attack could have hit. If so, can I make my second attack be against the other kobold within reach?

Y'know, when I ran one 5E PbP by email, I converted the saving throws into static defenses, much like how they operate in 4E.

So, creatures have Ability Defenses that are calculated as 8 + ability modifier + proficiency (if proficient). When an effect calls for a saving throw, the controller of the effect would instead roll to attack the relevant ability defense with 1d20 + spellcasting ability mod + proficiency.

For example:
  • Kobold has Dex 14 and is proficient with Dex saves. Kobold then has Dex Defense 12 (8 + 2 Dex mod + 2 proficiency).
  • Kobold is subjected to Faerie Fire cast by Talyn with DC 13 (8 + 3 Wis mod + 2 proficiency). Instead of waiting for Kobold to roll the Dex save, Talyn instead rolls to attack with 1d20 + 3 Wis mod + 2 proficiency.

This way, there is less need for a back-and-forth between player and DM as the players can determine immediately who saves or fails against their actions. This would require that the NPC/Monster defensive stats be shown, however (much like the HP and AC are shown).

Just putting this out there, for consideration moving forward. ^_^

Wow, you get good rolls just by asking? I didn't know it was so easy!

About 5e defenses and PBP, the DM could also provide all the stats up front. That way, a Player can fully resolve his or her turn in the moment. Here's an example from a CoEA game I recently ran.

It never hurts to ask politely. And it's a lot easier to be arrogant when you actually hit something.

That was one way 4e lended itself well to PbP. The low number of defences allowed players to do a lot in their posts without DM input. But all the interupts and reactions more than made up for that...

I typically try to provide the AC up front, and have done so, simply to avoid this issue. All my time with the heavy crunch of Pathfinder has made it a necessity, because otherwise, my DM posts aren't just me trying to make sense of everyone's posts and making them into coherent combat, but me trying to make sure I've kept up with monster stats privately. Which is annoying. So, I make them public so everyone can see them, so I can keep up with them, and so that I can have expanded versions in my private DM Screen that you lot don't get to see I give you the bare minimum, after all. Rolling appropriate knowledge skills might inform of things such as Resistance and racial/monster-specific stats

However, with saves and whatnot, I reserve the right to roll their saves, though it might be easier to make you lot. Now that I think about it, providing full stats and whatnot might not be a bad idea, since monsters typically don't have Save proficiency with anything. It's something to think about, if nothing else

Ah, 4e. It did have a lot of potential on PbP, but I could never get over my dislike of it on tabletop. Or in general. And such

Post coming tomorrow, I got post-move movement to make.
