Custom 3d Character Portraits
Lizard's Public Renders That's right. I can't get enough of working with 3d models, and crafting RPG characters. Therefore I'm opening a thread for public submission to have your characters rendered as a 3d model!Accepting Requests Let Lizard Render your Character's Likeness Ever since I was a youngin' I always enjoyed visual arts. I can remember when I was first introduced to D&D back in the early 90's and how I had to sketch out that first elf ranger – like so many of our first elf rangers - he was orphaned by an orc raid on his village and left with a large scar on his face. I had to draw him, and ever since then I've been one of those who sits at the table waiting for his turn in combat and sketches in that little 1 inch by 2 inch portrait box, or on the back of the character sheet. Several years ago, I began experimenting with 3D Rendering. I had some lofty expectations about producing Pixar quality movies, and it took me a good length of time to recognize that there was a legitimate reason those moves are followed by 15 minutes of credits. While I'm no movie studio, I did find that I had a talent for single frame renders, and this seemed a perfect medium to visualize my RPG characters in. Its part of my character generation process now, I page through books, write down stats, and pose 3D models. The thing about 3D Rendering that I really favor over drawing is that once you've molded and outfitted your model the proportions never change and no matter what the pose or scene it's always the same character you designed, and I just generally enjoy working in the 3D medium. In fact, I enjoy it so much, I'm opening my rendering queue to anyone who would like to see their characters in 3D space. A couple of Rules/Guidelines:
While I'll do at least as many renders as I mention below, I've taken on a more fluid process of rendering including as many different poses and scenes that strike me as fully depicting the aspects of the characters you have presented. The end result is a much more personalized photo spread for you to enjoy. What I will provide you with as a rule of thumb are three images. One at dimensions of 500x772 depicting a full-body view. A second at 500x772 depicting the same picture zoomed in for more facial detail. And a third picture at 125x193px (which is the default size for pictures on the dndonlinegames character profiler). Additional renders can be created, if requested. Once I have established your character's Avatar I can always come back and repose for a new render. Of course, even if I've already made your character's Avatar it may be a while before I get around to your request - but I will. With that in mind, I will also be willing to revisit characters and update them for you. If Bub the Barbarian lost an arm in battle and is now Stub the Barbarian; I can make that happen in a new render too. The more description you can provide for me, the better likeness I can create for you. So be creative and be clear. I'm not opposed to crafting an existing likeness to your character, so if you have an existing picture that is spot on, but want a 3d picture please provide it with your request, and tell me what aspects of the picture you want transferred to the 3d avatar. So go ahead and start requesting! You can provide copies of existing character details, links to the character's details, links to 3d models, celebrities, cartoons; whatever you may have that could help me depict your character in the 3d world! My Resources: I am currently in the very casual process of rendering certain parts of my library for display. When I have created an album for display the link will be available below, and noted if updated.
TEST RENDER PURGE COMPLETED ON: 9/11/2015 All existing test renders have been purged from my photobucket account. This is purely an effort to conserve data storage limits. Broken links resulting from this maintenance will not be removed. If a finalized render has been inadvertently removed during this process please let me know so that I can correct the issue. Accepting Requests

ME ME ME!!!
Let me start by saying I really like the work you have posted and I have something that might be a bit of a challenge, so hopefully that will be fun for you creatively. OK, I have pair actually. A husband and wife and they are rather difficult to portray because they are highly stylized characters. A loving embrace between the two of them would be awesome, but anything with the two together would be great. The other player might have some ideas for poses as well... If you have extreme aspirations we could get descriptions of a group shot to include many more characters in the game, but that will be an even greater challenge than what we have. One is the man, my character, The Investigator, Willaim Eindegarr Tish, and the other, Dauphinous' character "Radiance" Lily. I'll start by putting Tish here because Lily has updated descriptions and things to add and has never gotten a perfect photo for this. OK so Tish: You'll note the transparent "ghost snow owl" which is his familiar. We will need wedding bands for both. If you want to go nuts, rings would look like this: Tish also has a crystal ball that is regular prop of his that might be featured well. Another prop is his staff with a glowing maelstone atop it. You'll notice his eyes, hands and tattoos all glow when he is casting. The robes are basic black but you'll note the reddish priestly stole on him. If you want uber detail on the stole, a yin yang of dragons is the symbol used by the church. The shoulder armor is also important because it's a magical armor he posesses. Character sheet with all relevant data to picture. You'll note that with GURPS you can even see in the advantages and disadvantages areas various personal traits such as his military posturing and other features that apply that will help you get a feel for who the character is. I am also completely available for questions and answers and any other brain picking. As a backdrop I'll leave it to your artistic discretion when you have the models prepped but if you want input for an idea just toss it out and I'll be happy to see if there is a point where the two might have been at such a location. Tish, as you'll notice has glowing arcane facial tattoos. They are specifically the ones rendered there, that's just some stuff I shopped in over about 5 minutes with gimp to hurriedly get the photo ready for posting. The point is that they are arcane tattoos that cover his whole body. If you want to show the hair of Tish, it's long, dark and braided. Here is an old pic from his youth: Back then it was dreaded, but now it's in fine braids, though you should get the idea. Staff pictured there or similar could do just fine. I'll be sending Dauph over ASAP to get the details on Lily. Some starters though are that she has bat wings, horns and doesn't dress like a harlot as is typical for the "succubus" type pics. She also has radiant halo/aura. Dauph will be in shortly with more I'm sure. A bit of info: The character is a former priest turned mystic/wizard. He is a master of ritual magic and very adept in mind magic as well and also has a deductive insight that is pretty much supernatural that allows him to "know things" through his logic. He works as a sort of Illuminatti MIB, which is a stark contrast to his wife who is a bit of holy, public, celebrity icon as the head of church who is surprisingly meek, which of course, Tish, is a bit more brash. The two have a two year old boy together and came together as outcasts working for the old church, pretty much sent off on a suicide mission to be rid of them, though their fates were tied together long before. The whole game is full of interesting characters, such as Diego/Odiena, who would actually have two portraits as the character has been both male and female due to strange twists of magic and fate; Jotun, the intellectual half ogre body guard, and Shadow, who I can't speak of yet because he's an old player coming in as a new character, but I get the "rogue" vibe there. I have never been able to find the amount of reference material you're looking for, but for what it's worth, here's what I've got.
Radiance Lily Dragoon Tish, Champion of Polaris Dragon-blooded - looks human except for the dark draconic wings sprouting from somewhere around her shoulder blades and two short, stumpy little blackened horns on her forehead female, age 23 5'2" 115lbs. Professional martyr/religious leader Hair color is on the darker side of brown, currently short enough that it doesn't cover her ears - basic reference image (of Natalie Portman): http://www.peta2.com/OUTTHERE/page/2...eg-natalie.jpg Violet eyes, light complexion. There is a tattoo on her forehead that takes up most of the middle of it, between the horns. The symbol itself has never been described specifically, and can be just about anything, but is intended to be the holy symbol of a god of the sun and light and that sort of thing. I can look around and see what there is to find for this. She also has a visible aura described thus: "It was nothing more than pure Light, spilling out from her body like she was a candle. Here and there, tendrils wisped around in it, making it appear as fire without burning or using the right colors. The tattoo on her forehead glowed with it, too, the lines of it glittering like diamonds." Lily is selfless and compassionate, disgustingly so, those are the two primary facets of her personality. She is the figurehead of a new religion formed on those two basic principles. She wears simple, plain clothing in light colors, with functionality most important. Always pants, never skirts unless there's pants under them (the wings are functional, and flying in a skirt is just not okay). Clothes are close-fitting, but not excessively revealing. She isn't a highly sexual person. I have used this image in the past, when she was a little younger. This image is good for the wings, but nothing else. |

Very cool! Do you use Maya or Bryce 3D? I used to do 3d work but stopped many years ago after spending $5k on software.

WoLT: Wow.. that's a cool character, there's a lot for me to sort out there, but 90% of what you've detailed I can do. Even the glowing tattoos. I'll likely start looking into a test render for you later tonight.
dauphinous: The link you provided for the picture is broken, please check it. Otherwise, its all doable; I may have a few questions after I see the pic you intended to send. But I think I've seen if not even have a character morph to resemble specifically Natalie Portman. Both: I think this render will be epic. I'm not entirely familiar with GRUPS. What area is your game set in (ancient, modern, furture)? Digorig I use Bryce 5 for some landscape work here and there (it makes beautiful renders but is twitchy on a 64bit system (or maybe just vista), so I try to keep what I can in DAZ Studio 4. I've been known to dabble in Hexagon too, but that's sculpting and like I said above; I'm not very expeditious with it.

Sorry 'bout that. It's the image I use for my avatar. I can't find another of the exact same linked anyplace, but this one is basically the same: http://cdn.blogs.sheknows.com/celebs...-hairstyle.jpg

Oh, you asked about the setting. It's fantasy with some tech elements. If you think of it as standard fantasy with lowish magic, that's not too far off. I feel it's a bit grittier than routine D&D-esque high fantasy, and it has some steampunk elements, but our particular characters aren't really steampunky.
Can you make the horns shorter and stubbier? Maybe half that size, without any curvature. I've always pictured them like little volcanic peaks sprouting from her forehead. That makes me giggle, because the idea of volcanoes coming from her head almost completely contradicts her personality. A little more pale would be good, but not much more. She's pale complected, but has spent the better part of the last three years or so outdoors. |

A note about tish: You'll notice his strength is a bit low, an 8 (10 is normal for all scores), he's a bit thinner than the current render, just barely able to carry Lily's tiny frame. Also mentioned he's pretty pale as well, most of his days are spent in tomes, secret meeting rooms, taverns looking for intel, ancient ruins, interrogation chambers, etc.
He also tends to stay up all night working without sleep through use of spells, but that takes it's toll as well. As an aside... If you're not familiar with GURPS I highly suggest it... it's my personal favorite system because it's point buy and you can do literally any kind of game/character with it, but it's not exactly a beginner system because character creation is complex the first few times because of all the options you have to customize. As a GM it's pretty scary the first few times through as well because of various other strangeness like calculating tech levels and such when designing the setting. A bit about the relationship dynamic, and I would definitely suggest Dauph had input here, i would say William definitely loves her, but not a way a woman generally wants (though he does his level best to make it up to her as much as he knows how)... he's gone for extended periods, over focussed on his work "for the good of humanity and future generations" and has various personality quirks, but also lots of exceptional things about him that manage to keep him attractive, but more so than anything keeping that connection fresh is difficult for him because he's generally exhausted from his duties, always pushing himself further than he should to do more (not to mention his cosmic level mindset tends to make him have less joy in the mundane and simple). Lily represents his solid foundation not only when she is there, but also in her absence. Just thinking of her tends to ground him and keep him moving forward when he might otherwise not have the strength. She also nurtures him in a way that tends to bring out the best in him that would otherwise probably be completely absent. I wouldn't call it co-dependency, as William could in theory exist without her, but he wouldn't at all be the same man and would probably be a lot more miserable, bitter and jaded assuming he managed to live through the several occasions where she saved his life without her having been there. To clear up any confusion on that a bit, William isn't intentionally reckless, but manages to find himself in harm's way an awful lot through his actions which earn him not only staunch allies, but also dedicated enemies. Over all there is a complimentary dynamic between the two that is a sort of fire and ice type relationship (Tish being the volatile fire and Lily being the soothing cool), not as in against each other, but how they interact with situations, thereby usually finding a great balanced and optimal approach to problem solving. This was exacerbated a lot more when they were younger but each has adopted some of the other since, but still lean in their own base direction. Last edited by WoLT; Jul 17th, 2012 at 02:26 AM. |

I'm hesitant to endorse that fire and ice analogy. I see where you're coming from with it, WoLT, but I think it gives the wrong impression to someone who doesn't know them. I see Lily as the hearth fire, warm and inviting, always there, always giving, never blazing out of control, but capable of causing harm. I wouldn't use a word like 'cool' or 'ice' to describe her - it conjures images that aren't appropriate.
Likewise, I don't really think words like 'fire' or 'heated' are right for Tish. He's meticulous and methodical, thorough and relentless, never rash or impetuous. Like the ocean, perhaps, with unceasing, unyielding tidal force. Or a river - difficult to divert from his set course, and easily returning to it once diverted. I'd say it's more accurate to cast her as the sun and him as the ocean, if you need that kind of analogy. This holds true for most everything, including their romance. On the pose itself, I'm not sure how it would work, but I suggest having her behind him somehow, with at least one wing curling protectively around him, and one arm circling around to touch his chest over his heart, then his hand over hers, maybe leaning against or towards her. |

Also FTR Lizard, here's an awesome idea you might enjoy... once you have these models rendered (although additional ones would need to be)... you pretty have the makings of a web comic in your hands. We have years of story and interesting plot built up (though like all games it was a bit shaky at first) and Dauph even started to write it in story format at one point. Our writing group has been pretty tight for years and I'm sure everyone would be enthused to see something like that and help out how they were able. I can easily build a website if you wanted this and many other epic games on the site could swiftly be turned into web comics and possibly even generate some ad revenue. it's an idea if it's something you're interested in. Could be a fun creative outlet. Once the models are made you basically just repose them and drop in some talk bubbles and thought clouds and you've got a comic. I also have other incredibly unique characters but I'm hesitant to request more at the risk of being greedy and stealing too many spots from all the other potential users that might enjoy this. I also have another epic story with very good writing and another solid group as a potential comic as well, though the cast there is pretty large as it's a very large sandbox. Wow, you two have a lot going on. I like it. So I extracted the design from the ring you posted, and made a transparency of it in png format. This is what I'll be using to apply it over an existing ring model and texture. I thought you two might like to have this image as well, for your own uses. As far as starting another webcomic, I'll not say no. But this is not the time to do so for me. Let's get through this render here and we can talk about that later, but I like the idea. (especially if someone else is handling writing and such). On the subject of the poses. I like what dauphinious suggested, and once I get the models crafted and start working on the portrait I'll experiment with a couple different ones to see what works best. I started work on Will's tattoos today, and I think they're starting to look good. However, I'll just let you know right now that as far as his tattoo work goes, what I come up with is what you'll get; I'm not complaining about any aspect of WIll, but its very complex and can't offer a whole lot of tweaking. Regardless, I'm sure you'll like what's done.

The idea is that they look mystical and arcane symbols, rather than say, skulls and dragons and such, but the aesthetics I'm sure you'll have a good handle on.
I like the idea of a web comic a lot, especially come to find out you have prior experience, but if that comes up as a possibility just shoot me a PM and I'll get everyone in the group in contact, maybe have a GD make a sub forum for it and then I'm sure you'd have quite the audience just from this site alone, let alone any other contacts, and I have a few friends that are big into web comics that we could network with for things like link swaps and such. Also I agree entirely we have a lot of stuff going on with the characters, i was actually hesitant to go into even more detail so as not to make the project too difficult... thing is we've been writing these characters regularly for several years, so there's lots of stuff in there to work with.
