The Vigil

Game NameThe Vigil
Game SystemPathfinder
ThemeVigilantes taking back their city from crime but also struggle with themselves.
FlavourDark fantasy, Noire, superheroes, intrigue, episodic
Plot Summary
Intro
These are the eyes of the First Vigil
The eyes that witness a shadow choking the city
The eyes that put on a mask to face the shadows
And became a radiant symbol among the darkness
But this Vigil’s sight was taken away in one last confrontation

These are the eyes of the Second Vigil
The eyes that witness the darkness growing stronger
The same eyes that saw light being able to defeat the dark
But whose sight was blinded by the same darkness they fought so hard against
Whose Vigil's final sight was comrades fighting each other

These are the eyes of the Vigil yet to witness
The eyes that know suffering and fear
The eyes that have not been led astray by lies
The eyes that know the darkness is merely resting before striking
These are the eyes to take up the Third Vigil

Havenport is a sprawling metropolis whose population is up in the millions. This city started off as a small fishing community near the Eden ocean until investors saw promise in this settlement's future. What was once a small fishing town, became a maritime powerhouse that caught the crown's attention. Soon the original fishing clans became wealthy and powerful aristocrats that had ruled the town fairly under an oligarchy with the crown's favor. However this friendship didn't last long as the new queen that came into power declared Havenport an entity of the crown and thus the oligarchy had to be split up in favor of a mayor. Of course revolution broke out but the fishing town was no match against the crown’s might. Havenport became part of the crown's empire and though the crown allowed the town some autonomy (one such privilege being able to vote on their mayors) the crown’s word is still law. With the new mayor in power, there are some rumors of a new revolution. This having found it's way to the Queen's ear, the Empire’s Inquisition has sent an agent to Havenport to help in the investigations of such heresy.

But this city has a dark underbelly that only the low folk know of. After the separation of the oligarchy and following it's defeat, only two clans remained of the five previous ones. They were the Evergleam and the Azure clans. These two clans were rivals even during the rule of the oligarchy. Both of them tried to undermine the others however the other families were able to break up their petty spats. Being under the crown’s rule, the two clans retreated to the shadows and turned themselves into powerful crime families. Their hatred for one another turned streets red with blood and the local law enforcement were no match against them even with the aid from the crown. The section of the town called Sanctuary for being a place where the poor and downtrodden could find peace from the oppression of the crown and the city’s aristocracy, was turned into a base of operations where wannabe gangs formed to take what they want and not care about who they affect. Where you either sworn allegiance to Evergleam clan or the Azure clan. That or you strike out on your own hoping your spark isn't snuff out too early. This crimewave found itself into Eden Harbor where most of the fishermen lived. Although the Queen had control of the city, the city belonged to organize crime and madmen who wanted nothing more than to get their jollies off.

This was a time when heroes were needed. Where the innocents who couldn't protect themselves found an early grave. Where a child’s cry from a parent murder in front of them was heard on deaf ears. A time when retirement meant paying off your dues to a local gang lord. The only lucrative business was the drug traffic running throughout Havenport. A dark time where light needed to be shined through.

Former adventurers who retired from the adventuring life found themselves faced with a dilemma that was worst than fighting a dragon. They were facing the dark side of the soul and mind. They once again took up arms but not for glory or riches but to keep their home safe from this evil monster’s intimidating gaze. As brothers and sisters they swore to each other the first words of what was to become the First Vigil. “In darkness and in light, the eyes of this Vigil shall strike fear in the hearts of evil and bring solace in the minds of the innocent. So be the Vigil.” Knowing by doing so they would die, they carved this oath as an epitaph upon a weathered stone in a hidden part of the city where trees with lively green leaves glisten in the moonlight that touches down. With words spoken and carved they set out on their promise and for a time Havenport became a better place but the Evergleam and the Azure clans seeing these heroes masquerading with outrageous disguises and silly sounding names destroying their empire decided to put aside their rivalry and team up with each other against this menace that threaten their livelihoods. The First Vigil were able to fight the two families separated but their combined might proved too much for the forces of good thus the watch of the First Vigil came to an abrupt end and with them the hope of a better life for the city.

However in the deepest despair, hope can still blossom. After several years the crime families of the Evergleam and the Azure grew more powerful but a new player walked onto the stage. The Alabaster family was able to rise to prominence during the other two families struggle with the First Vigil. The Alabaster family was an aristocratic family who had always dreamed of ruling the city but their blood was weak compared to the other aristocrats that lived in Havenport and the people’s view of them wasn't strong enough to elect one of their own into office. So Henry Alabaster III used the fighting of the Vigil and the crime families to his advantage. He started making allies with some of the aristocracy who had ties to the Evergleam and Azure manipulating and persuading them that their ties to these families could ruin their good standing with the Crown. He spread rumors throughout the rich of Havenport that the crime families were in league with revolutionaries and the Vigil were also revolutionaries but didn't see eye to eye with the Azure and the Evergleam. It wasn't too hard for Alabaster to sow the seeds of doubt since it was a known fact that the Azure and the Evergleam killed the Crown’s men out in the streets and were also known to bribe the local law enforcement personnel that weren't on the aristocracy payroll. By the defeat of the First Vigil came to past, Alabaster had already put their Azure and Evergleam allies in his pocket. Having no allies in the upper class of Havenport, the two families became desperate in trying to hold onto what power they had. The lower gangs that had paid allegiance to those families found better company with the Alabasters. Soon Henry’s behind the curtain tactics had paid off putting his family in a better position for power. With one last seed of doubt sowed between the two crime families, both the Azure and the Evergleam declared all out war on each other and those who opposed them.

During this chaos the Second Vigil was born from wannabe heroes and those who remembered the heroic deeds of the First Vigil. As brothers and sisters they sworn to each other the second oath of the Vigil. “We carry the burden of hope from those who came before us. Their sacrifice only strengthening our bonds. Side by side we will fight as one against the growing tide of chaos and darkness. So be the Vigil.” Their unity served as a strong presence of hope for those wanted no more than for this chaos to end. Brother and sister of the Vigil fought alongside each other even against impossible odds but always found a way to victory. Their greatest victory came when the crime families of the Azure and the Evergleam no longer had the strength nor the resources to continue the fighting thanks to the Second Vigil working with local law enforcement to cripple their life lines. Having been backed into the corner, the heads of the Azure and Evergleam gave themselves up hoping their heirs that were hiding in secrecy could build their power once more. During this turmoil the Alabaster had campaigned for office with the stance that the current mayor wasn't powerful enough to stop this madness in the first place and that the people needed a stronger leader. And in one fell swoop, was able to win the office. As his first order of business, decorating the Second Vigil as components for the chaos and not the solution. The Second Vigil needed to answer for their part in the chaos by either giving up their identities and working for the city or be persecuted and put on trial for their part. This was the fall of the Second Vigil. Half of these heroes gave themselves up to the city believing that by doing so they could prolonged the peace they were able to achieve while the other half were wise to the new mayor's act and refuse to be a part of his ruse. The Second Oath that was spoken by both brothers and sisters was broken as former allies fought against each other until one victor was apparent. Those who sided with the mayor had won but at the lost of the very people they stood side by side with. After the victory, the mayor had outlawed the practices of the Vigil welcoming the former members as part of the local law enforcement. However as time went on, the former members of the Second Vigil died of mysterious diseases or found an assassin with a dagger to their throats in their own homes. The Second Vigil was no more and Henry Alabaster III was able to turned the public opinion of him into him being the savior of Havenport. And on his death he was remembered as a true hero and not the monster he truly was.

After four generations of Alabaster being in office, the new mayor Terra Alabaster has the same vileness her great grandfather had. Having strengthening bonds with the new Queen, the young Esmeralda and using her predecessors ties to the gangs in Sanctuary, she was able to extend the hand of the Alabaster to where the heirs of the Azure and Evergleam struggle against. Organized crime is theirs even with the mad men and wannabe gangs sprouting up. Spies from every facet of life work as her eyes and ears in the city. There is nowhere that the eyes of the Alabaster hasn't seen. But their eyes have not seen the hidden epitaph of which the Vigil have written their oaths upon. Where the souls of past heroes wait for yet another Vigil to take root.

Greetings from the GMHello there and thank you for taking a moment to look at this! I have notice there aren't many pathfinder campaigns that are "vigilante" friendly that or I haven't looked hard enough. Well this campaign aims to remedy that with a narrative familiar to a to watching your favorite super heroes on the big or small screen or on the pages of your favorite comic book. But before I get a head of myself, I am Kazegami your GM for this rather intriguing tale. I have about 2 to 3 years of pathfinder under my belt and quite frankly it is my favorite system by far. And lately I have been wanting to see how the vigilante plays out. And being a fan of superheroes thought to make a campaign around such. Your characters will be the heroes to combat evil that corrupts your beloved city. But we all know that life isn't black and white all the time. So if this interests you than I hope you decide to make a character and join the cast.

Game FAQAlright here are some basic questions about the game but feel free to asks some questions yourself. And for easy reference I will put them here.

Character Application
Name:If you are a vigilante put your social identity here.
Alias: Your Vigilante name if you have one. If one of the special roles put either Inspector or Inquisitor
Age: Mainly the young adult age category for your race.
Race:Paizo Core and Featured
Class:Any Paizo including the Occult. Third Party is up to discussion.
Appearance: You can split this section up as Social Identity and Vigilante Identity if it applies to you. Either a description or an image will suffice.
Background: How your character grew up in this city and what led you to becoming a Vigilante. If Inspector, you can say you were able to graduate top of your class in the police academy thus granting you the early promotion to Inspector. If Inquisitor, you can say you were raised among the Inquisition and was honed to be an instrument for the Queen. These are suggestions only by the way.
Vice and Virtue: In this section put your Virtue and Vice here. The vices come from the seven cardinal sins while the virtues come from the seven heavenly virtues. These should show in your character during play. It can be settled and or evident. Players of the former New World of Darkness are probably familiar with this concept.

Would an elven investigator fit in this game? I have an idea for a character - possibly multi class but I have not played Pathfinder before so would need to discuss with you

Is it ok if I've never played pathfinder before? Well, I played once, but that was a couple years ago and none of us really knew what we were doing. I can learn relatively quickly, I just might need some help in a few things.

Thinking about a gunslinger or rogue, for the record.

I know that you posted this with Vigilantes in mind, but to me this campaign is calling out for a Paladin, struggling to keep his oath while doing 'whatever is necessary' in pursuit of the greater good.

I'm thinking of creating a bard detective, something inspired by sin city. Or do you want a straight costume vigilante

Edit: On second thought, too many investigator interests. Sorcerer or oracle then. Something with an origin along the lines of x-men

@Fwalin and Fire Muffin: I am a newbie friendly GM! I will work with you and help you out. And I am sure others wouldn't mind helping you out either. I can defintely do elven investigator and gunslinger. Just with gunslinger you have to mention how you acquire a gun.

@Plankton: Go for it! Would be interesting to see how a paladin would work.

I was thinking one of two things in regards to how my character acquired a gun.
  • Nobleman: My character would be a obleman's son who is either acting out, or (If you'll allow it) a son or other member of the alabaster family, who acs as another family member by day, but works against their underground crime operations by night.
  • Reformed criminal: My character was once a member of the various crim rings, either alabaster or one of its much smaller rivals. His gun would be illegal, probably stolen from a guard or something.

Those are my two ideas right now. I really like the idea of being a son or brother of the mayor, I think it would create a very interesting dichotomy with his alliances and agendas and what not. He'd be struggling against his family ties in order to do what's right. However, unless my character isn't entrusted with information on the doings of their crime operations, it could potentially give my character some knowledge you wouldn't give out otherwise.

So I understand if you'd rather me not be a member of the alabaster family.

@Fire Muffin: I was hoping someone would want to be apart of the Alabaster! Their are currently 3 siblings of the Alabaster. Terra just happenes to be the eldest being 31. Also the Alabaster family themselves happened to be human in case I didn't mention that. But doesn't mean there couldn't be a half elf or a half orc amongst them

Updated Character Creation!

Kazegami;

Thanks for volunteering this campaign! I've been hesitant to invest in the vigilante, since as you've said they're not made for most campaigns. Will be interesting to get to see the class in action.

As for questions, do you have a method that a non-vigilante class would go about keeping his/her identity a secret? In trying to wrap my head around this mechanically, a class with a poor bluff or diplomacy could quickly become the weak link.

Truth be told, I do fear for Plankton's poor Paladin's fate.

Second, would a Magical Child be an inappropriate vigilante archetype for this setting?

Thanks @Artsol! To answer your question, the non vigilantes benefit from the vigilante's dual indenity and seamless disguise class features if they have no levels in vigilante. After some brainstorming I came to the conclusion that this maybe the simpler option. But I am up for suggestions. And you can do a magical child. If you have access to it, you can check out Four Horsemen Present: Young Character Options by Rogue Genius Games for some inspiration regarding the magical child.

@darkwulf: You can never have enough X-Men. Lol I will be cool with those classes. Again you guys don't have to be straight vigilante. This game just offers the chance to in case you ever been wanting to play one. If you want to go with x-men, have you checked out the Kineticist class from Occult adventures?

So, I have an few ideas that are coalescing into a character. One of which is a character who doesn't have a super-hero persona yet. That's something I'd like to role-play my character growing into. I'd like to start the adventure where I've just started my vigilante work, but I don't really have anything down, like another name, a specific outfit, or anything like that. Would that be alright?

@Son: That's perfectly alright. Your characters vigilante careers are still blossoming. You might have stop a few gang members or saved a few people but you haven't yet really embraced your vigilante alter ego. In the first two episodes I plan for you guys to really come to in your vigilante career. But if you want your guy to still be stumbling through all this vigilante business, feel free to. Overall in Season 1 you're still learning what it is to be a vigilante and the sacrifices that come with it.

Application to play.

Name: Ariel ap Diarmuid
Alias: Inspector
Age: 150.
Race: Elf
Class: Investigator [Would prefer not to be Steel Hound unless i have to to get gun as weapon]
Appearance: 5’6” tall, slim but voluptuous, long silver hair, violet eyes.
Background: Ariel has lived in her parents mansion in Queens Landing for the whole of her life. They are both druids who tend the trees and plants of that area to ensure they are as beautiful as they should be. She has observed the first two Vigils take place and was appalled by the lawlessness in the city and the injustice. After arguments with her parents, she was driven to apply to the Police Academy from which she graduated top of your class and was granted early promotion to Inspector.
Vice and Virtue: Her virtue is Justice. She believes that her role is to deal with all according to the principles of the law and natural justice. This is both settled and evident. Her vice is Lust. She has found that she gets many offers from persons of all races and genders and that she enjoys physical love. This is settled, but not evident.
