Welcome to Dogriver

Introduction
Welcome to Dogriver!

A town located at the intersection of half a dozen different trade routes from all across the continent. As a result of the many caravans passing through, the people have become very broad minded and welcoming of those normally considered unusual. As such, many strange and unique individuals have found a home in this warm and welcoming community.

One way or another, you have found your way to this lovely little town. Though quiet and unassuming at first, it doesn't take long for a person to find something interesting. Nearly everyday is a new adventure with fun an exciting things waiting just around the corner.

So for now, you've decided to hang your hat, make some friends, and earn some gold.

It's been (atleast) one month since you first arrived, maybe longer, but you've finally found a group of dependable allies to work with. You're getting better at completing missions and starting to make a name for yourself. More and more, people are recognizing you on the street, smiling and waving like they've known you for forever.

It feels pretty nice.

Now, it's time to wake up and greet the day! What will you see or do today?

Important InformationToday is the First MondayMoonday of AugustArodus. Your inn fee, rent, or mortgage has just been paid. Not counting items you own, You have 5 Gold, 10 Silver, and 20 Copper pieces.

First, you must decide if you are Staying at an Inn, Renting, or Buying a home in town.

Staying at the Sapphire inn is one of the more most luxurious options. For traveler passing by, 4 Silver a night is cheap for a warm clean bed, but staying a whole month costs 12 Gold pieces. Not cheap at all for most people.

Renting a Room is pretty cheap by comparison, but you don't get to pick your roommates or your landlord. 4 Gold coins per month is the cost to rent. (You are considered living at the low end of Average but better than Poor)

There are three Types of homes for sale in Dogriver.

Huts on the edges of town are drafty, leaky, but very private. They have only one giant common room with everything crowded inside. They cost 3 Gold per Month with a 1 Gold Coin deposit. The total purchase price is 180 Gold pieces. It takes a person 5 years on average to buy it out right. Includes the land around the hut. Many people buy huts, demolish it and build a better home. (This is considered living poorly.)

Small Homes are considerably nicer and have 2 bedrooms, a kitchen and common room. This is the typical starter family home and are built inside Dogriver walls, but due to thin walls and close proximity, there is less privacy than you might think. They cost 6 Gold per Month with a 10 Gold Coin deposit. The total purchase price is 720 Gold pieces. It takes a person 10 years on average to buy it out right. (This is usually a Starter home for a young couple, saving up for their dream home.)

Large Homes luxurious and very comfortable. They come with 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, common room, office, and a bath. They cost 10 Gold per Month with a 50 Gold Coin deposit. The total purchase price is 2,400 Gold pieces. It takes a person 20 years on average to buy it out right. (This is considered the high end of average living conditions for an employed person.)

You may choose how many months you have lived at a purchased property, and you receive one month's payment for free, but the rest of the cost must be deducted from your starting 3,000 gold coins. You can of course sell a property when/if you ever choose to leave, regaining a large chunk of the money you invested into the property.

KaiKai awoke in his small hut ready to greet the day. He tilted his head side to side to the sound of crackling joints. He then went about his morning stretches to limber up before his daily exercise of one hundred push up, one hundred sit ups, and one hundred squats. Once he had warmed up, he ate his breakfast before the halfling put on his gi and went out for his ten kilometer run which would finish at the adventurers hall where he would wait for the others.

Broc had been up since the sun was cresting the horizon, he collected the eggs and cooked a few for breaking his fast and then headed down the stairs in his home, through the store to the forge. Breathing in the morning air brought a smile to his face and he stoked the fires in the forge thinking 'i can at least start a piece, just have to remember we are meeting at the guild today.' Putting on his apron he began to work and soon the rhythmic pounding echoed through the streets....it was morning. With a smile and a wave to Kai as he ran by he shouted "Don't ferget, meeting at the guild today Kai." followed by the sizzle of red hot metal being cooled in water.

Crack of DawnWhen Vreilund was a boy the Old Man was quick to ingrain (or rather terrorize) into him the importance of getting the most out of the day. Thus as the sun rose, so too did the arcanist.

Stifling a yawn, Vreilund set a kettle of water on the fire to start warming up. Once the kettle had started whistling, he'd pour it's steaming contents into the wash basin (and then refill it for his morning tea, of course) before beginning his short but eminently efficient morning routine. First, a quick but scaldingly thorough wash; Five minutes on the hair and face, five more minutes on the extremities, and finally ten minutes on the trunk; totaling to precisely fifteen minutes (he timed it once).

Then once that was done, he'd make his bed, lay a clean set of clothes to wear, and finally get dressed. Just in time for the tea to be ready. So, dressed, washed, and groomed, with a steaming cup of tea in hand, Vreilund made his way outside of his modestly-sized home to check on his fungus collection out back.

And then...suddenly freeze up. The young mage had forgotten that Aetherick had granted him the day off. Or rather, forced him to take a day off.

Unfortunately, much like a gorilla with a new set of luggage, he had no idea what to do with the sudden surfeit of free time.

But then suddenly the arcanist let out a relieved breath he didn't know he'd been holding in as he remembered; the guildhall meeting. A relieved Vreilund set about finishing off his tea before heading out into the town proper.

The Curtain Rises!
It is not the height of decadence and indulgence - But, it will do. The Sapphire's prime suite might not be several rooms devoted solely to the art of comfort, yet what room there is is spacious, the bed is plush and comfortable, and the bath is heated and private. It's likely an hour, if not more, past the time that most people have already awoken for the day when the avian finally rouses from the tangle of sheets and blankets. It's another hour of enjoying a soak, primed with scented oils and cleansing bubbles of course, in that aforementioned bath. And, naturally, another half hour of dining on a fine breakfast. And at least another ten minutes chatting up one of the Sapphire's serving girls, much to the girl's embarassment and Stacey's conseternation (though the bird is simply teasing - It would be awkward to make a real attempt there.)

Several hours spent indolently in the later part of the morning, a good introduction to the day!

The avian strolls languidly from the Sapphire, expansive plumage swelled further with a deep intake of the afternoon air; Whether or not this causes any localized accidents due to distraction remains to be seen. Regardless, the falconess pivots on a booted heel with practiced ease and begins a languid stroll - Fortunately for her, the Sapphire's location means that many of the more vital establishments are within a very short distance! A brief pass-by of Giddeon's shop, roving eye surveying a display casually, in the event any fascinating thing happens to be set out; then a lazy swagger past the temple, mostly because the outrageous cut of her coat and the enviable cling of her lower vestments earns the most amusing of reactions there-abouts; a few pauses here and there to cheerfully interact with those passing by, feathered hat tapped in greeting and lively words exchanged. Invariably, the stylish bird's slow amble switches to a more purposeful stride as her destination nears - The Adventurer's Guild! While the rest of her little party might be fililng the earlier part of the day with this or that routine, Adalicia's already slept most of it away, thus she might as well poke about the Guild and see what's what today before they arrive to meet up together. Surveying any other adventurers that might be loitering about, the bird's smartly steps take her to the bulletin board to glance over its offerings.

Hmm, gathering herbs, pelts, goblinoid ears... Dire rats... A few deliveries... Ahh, but several for the good Doctor Glumbot. It doesn't hurt to have such individuals in your pocket, and his peculiar habits are fairly fascinating and always entertaining! Then again... A barrel of Ghostcap Ale? Très agréable! With some degree of good time management, she's fairly certain she and her cohorts could do a few of these in very short order... Provided they are open to doing so, of course.

A Typical MorningSebastian lived by a routine whenever he could, and he enjoyed the one he had in Dogriver. He sometimes stopped what he was doing when he could and tried to appreciate it. He'd arrived in town two months prior, and with the help of his landlord Remi, he hadn't had too much trouble finding an acceptable place. It wasn't an ideal life, but he knew that it could be much worse. It was a good place to be, while he strove towards his dream for more.

As usual, he woke up early and helped Remi around the small house. Nothing major, just small things to keep everything clean and in order (this included the house, himself and his gallant steed). He usually did that until the older rat-woman told him to relax, and that marked the half hour in which he would tend to his faith. With his holy text in hand, he would drive in Sarenrae's tenets into his mind, so he could display them in his every day life. He would eat a hearty breakfast and then he and Stoutheart would take to the town. It was like Dogriver's personal service patrol... while he was watchful for danger, what he was really doing was spreading good deeds where he could - from helping with wood chopping to corralling pets and livestock. He took joy in the simple good things he could do, and this way there was some time that he was always available.

Today, his last good deed/chore was helping Stacey chop some wood. He didn't mind the physical labor much, and Sarina even came outside to chat with him as he did. Though, by chat, it was more of the same - her asking him to tell her stories of knights and heroes like she usually did. And Sebastian happily obliged. Though he kept his eye on the sky, since he had promised to meet up with the others. As he worked, he managed to spot some of them, though he didn't stop to greet them. He went so far as to hide when he saw Adalicia emerge from the inn. He wasn't prepared to deal with her yet. Sarina poked fun at him, in her good-natured way. As if a ratfolk of his standing would like such a flighty bird. He did shoot her a glare, but he knew she was joking. After the swashbuckler was out of sight, the knightling put away the borrowed axe and let Stacey and Sarina know that he was going. Then, he too headed toward the guild hall as well.

Morning in DogriverIt was another beautiful day in Dogriver. Old Mrs. Downton was in front of the school house, ringing a bell as loudly as her old feeble arms could manage calling all the young boys and girls to class as Kai Knee High ran through town toward the Guild hall. The old human woman smiled and waved at the halfling, though thankfully today she didn't insist on joining her in the class room. Today must be one of her good days.

Kai continued running, dodging carts, horses, and merchants-alike as shop owners began opening setting up their wares for the day. The smell of fresh bread was spreading through the town as bakers finished their first batches of the day. Fisherman were already returning to the docks with their morning catches, adding a slight fishy smell to the air that somehow drew you in. All in all it was a pleasant run.

Waiting for Kai Knee High was there ever eye-catching Avian woman he had been working with, Adalicia Vivienne Amber, though most people in town tended to just call her Amber. She seemed to be holding a job posting. Amber was not alone, for Sebastian the mighty Knight and Vreilund the human mage were already by her side.

At least Kai wasn't the last one to arrive. But where was Broc and Zug? The Dwarf and Grippli were the only ones still missing from the assembly.

BrocBroc stood at the forge billet in the fires but as he took it out a coal fell out and landed on the ground. As Broc watched the hot coal roll to a stop in the dirt it reminded him of something he was supposed to do but he couldn't quite remember what it was. He placed the billet on the anvil and use the tongs to pick up the coal and place it back in the fire, as the coal began glowing once more he remembered. "Oh crap what time is.." he looked up at the sky to see the cool blue color settling in "I'm late." he said with a slight jump. Closeing down the forge as quickly as he could and making sure that fire in the forge was cool enough to be left alone he grabbed his pack and weapon and dashed as fast as his stubby little legs could carry him towards the guild hall.

When he arrived his face had smears of soot and he was still wearing the leather apron. Huffing and puffing to catch his breath he stood there for a moment and smiled "I'm here." once he caught his breath he tossed Vree a leather bag "Finished it last night, that's the one you wanted right?" the nondescript leather backpack was of course a handy haversack to the discerning eye.

KaiKai Waved back to the school teacher as he ran past her. Being mistaken for children was something he had grown used to, though he still found it odd that his beard and muscles did not distinguish him as an adult halfling. Perhaps humans simply were not that attentive. H was thankful for the obstacles in his path as it added an extra challenge for him to avoid them without breaking his stride. As always, Kai pushed himself to run as fast as he could and complete his course faster than he had the day before.

When he arrived at the guild hall,, he had broken a sweat which he took as a good sign that he had actually gained something from his exercise. He was not surprised that some of his companions had arrived before he had, but he was pleased that he was not last. He didn't wish to inconvenience anyone by making them wait on him. He gives a respectful nod to his companions as he joined them. Looking at the job posting he asks, "Do we have work?"

A Crucial DebateVreilund had already begun arguing with the animated avian over the job postings as the rest of their merry band approached. "I just do not see the wisdom in this. Surely our time can be used more productively than in pursuit of some sort of...libation." The mage ruefully shook his head before turning to greet each of them in turn. "Good afternoon Master Bercilak, Master Anvilmind..."

Sadly Kai'd greeting was interruped by a percussive oomph! as the ensorcelled backpack Vreilund had commisioned caught him right in the breadbasket. "Oof...of course...thank you for your time, Master Anvilmind." He'd sling his newly-acquired backpack over a shoulder before singling out a few postings himself. "Perhaps we could hunt down some medicinal herbs. Or even assist the miners. Those seem fairly straightforward."

Hear me Roar
left-aligned image

With a whoop and a holler, Zug leapt into the river which had inspired the town's name, his small form crashing into the water and turning the once still surface into a mess of splashes and waves, scaring away any fish who may have been taking the time to go about their fishy business. With another happy croak, he began his laps up and down the length of the river, using the borders of Dogriver as markers as he went back and forth. He was only vaguely paying attention to the movement taking place beyond the riverbank, but was not surprised when between strokes he caught glimpses of more than a few familiar faces going about their morning. Anybody who was paying attention to the grippli would notice that despite wearing nothing but his underclothes, consisting of a strip of fabric tied around his nether regions, he was also swimming with an oversized axe strapped to his back and cords of some kind tied around his shoulders.

Soon enough, Zug finished up his morning swim/bath, and proceeded to head on over to where he had left his gear, on the small island which was nestled within the river right across from the mayor's residence. He shook himself of excess moisture in a manner akin to a dog, then after a few stretches of his gnarled, scarred limbs he began putting on his bone adorned leather armor, strapping on a row of small, straight bones around his waist, and fastening the skull of some fanged creature or another to his shoulder, the extra adornments rattling all the while.

With everything the grippli owned now either on his person or in his backpack, Zug took his axe, raised it above his head with both of his webbed hands, took in a deep breath, and then...

"RAKKA RAKKA RAKKA RAKKA RAKKA!"

At the top of his amphibious lungs, the warrior let out a bellowing, croaking war cry towards the townspeople across the river, projecting as much fierceness and energy as he could muster into the open air. This was the only way one could treat the day, to let the world know that you were awake and ready to take on anything that it threw at you. It also felt good to just shout and be heard. Even if they did not know Zug's name, the people would know his song.

His ritual finished, Zug made haste to the Guild Hall to meet with the rest of his adventuring troupe. They were a good bunch, and good for a scrap or two, even that silly Vreilund and his constant moaning about whatever crazy thing Zug wanted to do. It was good to see some fire in that belly, even if it usually revolved around being a wet blanket for anything fun. Would make for some funny retelling when he got back to Treehome.

Zug strode into the Guild Hall, grinning from ear-to-ear, his eyes wide and alert in anticipation for the next adventure. He made a beeline for his fellow adventurers upon entering the Hall, raising a four fingered hand in greeting.

"What be happenin'?" the barbarian joined the group, and completely ignoring the fact that he was the last to arrive and that there was already a discussion underway, he read over the board postings and gave his thoughts.

"I be feelin' like killin' somethin' today. Who here be in da mood for some bear huntin'? Or maybe some goblin ears need to be separated from some heads." Zug looked glumly at the one of the Bronze quests on offer. "Promise me some blood and bone, and I'll be willin' to go along with any of these. Even the one askin' us to pick flowers." though from the tone of his voice, he would not be pleased about it.

Broc"I told ya to stop callin me that Vree, its Broc." he then looks over the board and then back to the others "I'd be up fer smashin some goblins, helpin out at the mines...might even be able to get some more supplies out o' that one. Or the bear pelts, but that could get gruesome quick." he scratches his chin and goes back to looking at the board "But the plants...that's a bit out of my element, never was much for flowers. But whatever we vote to do i'm happy to do."

Good Deeds and Such...Sebastian felt good as he waited by the Adventurer's Guild. He had another satisfying morning, and though Adalicia was who she was, he was always better at mitigating the risks of approaching her when he was astride his beloved Stoutheart. Two were missing when he arrived, but he didn't mind such things. He could be patient, sometimes at least. While he waited, he merely perused the board and daydreamed about doing all of the thing. All of them.

The others started to arrive, and the ratfolk gave them each a hearty welcome, though he tried to keep a respectable distance as he did so. He watched Broc pass Vree a bag, which was in no way strange. The dwarf always had his mind on his work... too much at times, even for the knightling. Vree made a couple suggestions based on the board, but before Sebastian could speak his piece, Zug finally arrived... and went straight into requesting something that included violence. Very like him. He gave the grippli a bow of his head, then spoke in a grandiose tone, or at least as grandiose as his high voice could muster, "Remember, mine friends, that all deeds for the goodly folk be worthy. A battle art surely wondrous at times, but do not lose thy sight of what matters! Of the jobs, escorting supplies doth seem most urgent. Verily, yon iron mines and the miners work for theirs and also thine benefit. It doth seem to me to be most pressing. Perchance the others shalt be done later, even on our return journey, if it be possible?"

The CompetitionWith all six members of the nameless party gathered, they began discussing the merits of the different jobs. This was an unfortunate problem that came from groups without a clearly defined leader, but considering most adventurers were stubborn and opinionated, it was a fairly common sight. Thankfully such arguments could easily be decided through some silly contest. A friendly game of Rock, Paper, Scissors for example.

Unfortunately they didn't have time to decide just yet they noticed everyone nearby was suddenly talking about and staring at the group that had just exited the Guild Hall. The first to exit was a male lizard-folk, whose scales were as black as night, save for the neon green dorsal spines and jowl frills stood out in strong contrast. He wore simple leather armor and carried a long thin blade upon his back. His native name was too hard for anyone without a forked tongue to pronounce so most people in town simply called him Drago.

Behind him walked to females, one a gnome woman with violet hair and a matching violet dress accented by black raven feathers and gold jewelry. She was a powerful Sorceress who seemed to command the obedience of darkness itself. Those in town knew her as Trixie Brightmoon. The other woman was a tall human with soft chocolate skin and long brown hair. She wore the blue and white vestments of an Iori cleric. She was not only the town's most powerful healer, but she was a skilled warrior who used a blunted pole arm in combat to smash her enemies with deadly force. She was Aurora Braveheart.

The last to exit was a tall human male, his overcoat was a plain ocean blue, and nothing about him particularly stood out, but everyone in town knew who he and his companions were. They were the Dog River Hurricane squad. A locally famous adventuring party that had reached Gold Plate status in near record time. Their leader, Douglas Brown, was a highly skilled sword fighter that few in town would dare to challenge.

The four seemed to have accepted a Job and made little conversation as they passed the novice adventurers gathered outside. At one point, Trizie offered Kai Knee High a wink as they passed, though most the others paid them no heed.

Kai smiled faintly and gave a nod of his head in response to the gnome out of politeness. He had little experience with women, so was under the impression that she was simply acknowledging him in a gnomish manner. He considered the gesture an honor given her status and skill as an adventurer, and a sign that his own reputation must be growing if he was worthy of her notice.

Once she and her companions had left, he returned his attentin to the matter at hand.

"I suggest we vote on the job we wish to do,"
He said calmly. "As for myself, I believe that stopping the goblins best serves the community."

Although Kai did not say it, he had an ulterior motive for wanting to face the goblins. It was his hope that among them he could find a worthy student. He was not so racist as to dismiss them as potentials simply for having green skin. In fact, he would see it as a worthy challenge.
