Chapter 3: The Hungry Storm

First Leg of the JourneyThe agents of the Five Storms seeking Ameiko and Ayako Kaijitsu have been thwarted, and heroes’ caravan has set out on the long frozen road to Minkai—the Path of Aganhei—to claim their birthright.

Their new guides, Vagnar Akselson and Ulf Gormundr, promise to lead them through landscapes more desolate
than any they have ever known, yet at the end lies the promise of justice for the Kaijitsu family, and fortune and
glory in a realm unlike any in Avistan.

The journey begins as our heroes and their caravan, under Vagnar and Ulf ’s guidance, cross the Arctic Circle and enter the Crown of the World. To reach this point, our heroes left Kalsgard and traveled through the Thanelands of
the Linnorm Kingdoms before following the line of the Stormspear Hills to reach the Definition: The sometimes swampy coniferous forest of high northern latitudes, especially that between the tundra and steppes of Siberia and North America.taiga and tundra beyond theStormspear Mountains.

At that point, the two Avistani ends of the Path of Aganhei (the western route from Kalsgard and the eastern route from Icestair in the Realm of the Mammoth Lords) join together to cross the Rimethirst Mountains. The journey from Kalsgard to the Rimethirst Mountains—a trip of about 1,160 miles that takes at least 36 days—was largely uneventful.

During these 36 days, our heroes occasionally fended of wild monsters and beasts, hunted for good, and over all grew closer as a group.

Suddenly, Mari was less of a stranger. During the big mission at the mansion, they had only known the girl for less tan 48 hours, so needless to say they were suspicious of her. After knowing her for a month, things were starting to get less tense around her.

Ameiko, more than anyone else, was eager to get to know her half sister. Ameiko had been devastated when her half-brother died a few years back, so while she didn't want to replace him, it was a sort of second chance to her. Not only that, but Mari had actually seen Minkai and knew stories, legends, and various other interesting facts and tidbits that no one else in the party knew. This made her intensely interesting to Ameiko, who was and always would be a bard at heart and nothing made a bard happier than hearing a new story.

Davex had changed the most and at first the others of the caravan were unsure as to what to make of it. However, Koya and Spivy found that Davex's change had linked them all spiritually far closer than they had in the past. Now the three spent many late nights together watching the stars and speaking of spiritual matters relating to Desna.

The absence of Auron was felt by all. Though he had only been with the group for little over a week, he had had a knack for bringing joy to those around him.

As the our heroes descended the northern flanks of the Rimethirst Mountains that form the frontier of the Crown of the World, they enter a rugged hill country. As they walked, their guides spoke about the area.

This blustery, wind-carved badlands and folded hills of Urjuk were once home to a collection of giant realms, before their inhabitants relocated into the mountain peaks to establish grander lodges or migrated farther south into warmer lands. While some giants still wander the tundra or the High Ice farther north, the Giant-Downs themselves lie desolate and occupied by few humanoid inhabitants. Still, Urjuk is remembered as an ancient homeland, and many giants go there to die or be buried in the lands of their ancestors.

On the 39th day of the journey, the caravan could make out in the distance a massive partial skeleton, picked clean of all meat ages ago, possibly hundreds of years ago, worn smooth by time.

On the 41st day, the Caravan spotted a giant dire wolf running parallel to the caravan, several hundred yards away.

On the 43rd day, the same dire wolf blocked their path. As the caravan pulled to a halt, the wolf spoke. Yes. The wolf spoke.

"Tiny creatures... you enter sacred lands... if you wish to pass with my blessing, offer to me one of your cattle. Sate my hunger, stick to the path, and you shall go unharmed." The voice was booming and deep, yet horse and raspy, so much so it was almost hard to understand it.

Trjegul
They were only two weeks into their journey when Davex noticed something was following their caravan. Laying under the stars something was nagging at the back of the saThis worried the inquisitor, there was all nature of strange and dangerous beast out here in the wilds, and he hadn’t lost all of his skills as a ranger. Ducking back around the caravan as it slowly made its way plodding through the snow the Inquisitor circled wide around the caravan, to see what was following them.

Moving in slowly, Davex saw something huddled in a snow and his hand instinctively went to his bow. That was when he saw it, huddled in a mound of snow trying to keep warm – there was a lynx, its back arched slowly backing away in fear. The little cat snarled and hissed, and the satyr couldn’t help himself.

Tsk Tsk, quiet friend. What’re you doing all the way up here, this is pretty cold even for one as fluffy as you. Davex had forgone his feathered friends weeks before, but this friend was fluffy. Davex fished around in his pack and tossed a piece of dried meat to the small predator, who quickly gnawed on the offered gift. Someone was hungry. The cat hissed again, still unsure of the hoofed archer. Fine, have it your way, Davex stood, Come to the caravan when you’re feeling up to it. Davex tossed another piece of meat to the cat, before turning to walk back to the group, a small grey spotted shadow creeping along about twenty paces behind.

The cat was shy at first, slowly creeping into camp following the satyr. Koya, awake and gazing at the stars, watching as the cat follows the satyr as he goes past. The old woman chuckles, Old habits die hard, eh boy?

The satyr shot a glance at the old woman which caused her to cackle, and as Davex climbed into his tent, the cat cautiously followed, and has been an ever-present shadow to the Satyr ever since.
*****
It was the 43rd day of their travel and Trjegul had grown restless ever since that damn wolf started stalking the caravan. It’s presence put Davex on edge as well, but as long as it stayed away Davex felt no need to deal with it, but now it stood in their way, defying them. Davex had an inkling of how the Princess would respond and so he grabbed his bow, and waited.
OoCIn the event that additional survival checks are needed, Davex still has a +11 in Survival

Ayako travellingThe journey to Rimethirst Mountains is long, thirty-six days without any particular incidents or violence. It remind her when they were traveling to Brinewall, countryside and a lot of wilderness, very little action. At the dawn of her adult life, she realizes that she has too much energy and hormone for her own good, making her more and more restless. Not the wisest or the smartest, she has a hard time to deal with herself. Sitting all day in a wagon is not glamorous at all or exciting, a bit cheer up by their recent accomplishments she teases with prank her Sister, Davex or Garen occasionally on the way but she quickly get bored. She is playing the Perform +7shamisen with her sister on the road, the priestess is not as good as the future empress, but enjoys sharing a hobby with Ameiko.

After a month, Ayako is getting over it about Mari arrival, since Ameiko seems to incline to accept her in the family organically, she sees the wizard like a cousin or something like that which is a significant improvement. In Ayako heart, she only has one true sister that she workship since her birth, and two spirituals brothers Davex and Garen.

It's not Mari fault anyway that Ayako relationship with the Kami and divine blood isolate her from the normal people, being a fully fledge princess just make things more complicated. How could someone truly understand someone who speaks to the gods, sees strange things, has royal blood, is stubborn and reckless, wearing a legendary sword and who had daddy issues that can't be fixed since he was murdered by his chaotic bastard brother? She is less and less a woman as this adventure continue, and more and more something else. Her Cha 19beauty and might are quite intimidating to begin with, few people are trying to break the shell anyway and those who try usually only manage to push her away furthermore like a wild smilodon who doesn't want to be tamed.

Vagnar the wild is an interesting fella, Ayako relates a lot to his wisdom. Lacking a lot of the later, she values more and more his advice and she is glad they found him. Her relationship with him is more like a pupil and tutor who teaches him much about nature and his understanding of the gods like Koya been doing for her in her early days of a priestess. It's good to have someone around that can understand a bit what she is going through with communication with the divine and control all the voices trying to communicate with her.

Training with Suishen and learn more about Minkai keep her busy, still, there's nothing as good as the thrill of battle that she is beginning to be addicted to. Of course she would never hurt something just for the sake of swinging her sword, however, she would gladly go after a creature that threatening the innocents. With the caravan disappearing in the shadow of the mountains she almost wished for an ambush or something to stretch her legs, an ice ogre perhaps or can she take on a giant she thought. All kind of fantasy goes through her head on the journey and end up being disappointed since nothing happened.

A talking wolfThe wolf at first didn't make her worry, what could a big animal be a threat to them, they beat up Onis after all. When the beast got in their way and begin to speak, she got excited, finally something is happening. Without realizing it she is standing with Suishen scabbard in her hands ready to draw the blade and hack this evil thing, but was it evil? She shakes her head and tries to find a peaceful way out of it, that would be plain stupid to just go after anything suspicious. This is not the way of the kami to kill natural living thing, this wolf could be one of the kami creation and might have good reason to behave like that.

- " Greeting guardian of those land. My name is Ayako. We need those cattles to survive the journey. If you are suffering from hunger, I can provide you with all the food you need. I have the power to conjure a large quantity of nourishment every morning while we travel through your lands. That would be a good deal to consider, besides hurting each other for cattle. We will defend ourselves if needed. "

The Wolf and the Approaching ThunderThe Dire Wolf sat in the middle of the road, unflinching as stone, its sharp yellow eyes locked firm with Ayako as she spoke. When she was finished, there was a silence for several minutes, save for the howling icy winds. Finally the voice spoke again, "Your offer is... accepted. Gratitude."

The Wolf remained frozen in place, simply staring at Ayako. A moment later a light thud was heard, so faint, so far off it was difficult to hear, but it was soon followed by a second. The rhythmic steps of large feet steadily approached. The wolf remained unflinching as a giant came from the same direction the wolf had traveled moments before. The giant was moving at fairly relaxed pace, yet its massive legs carried it a considerable distance quite quickly.

As it grew closer, it was clear in an instant that the giant was very old, with long snow white hair and matching beard both reaching just above his pectorals. Despite his age, his impressive muscles remained as if chiseled from stone. He wore many furs stitched together to make a great suit warm enough to survive in such harsh conditions and on his hip was a massive great axe bigger than a man, yet looking barely bigger than a hand axe next to the giant.

Over the weeks Mari was happy and shared many help catch up the sword over its gap of history/knowledge and any others who wish to learn.stories and knowledges. For a brief moment, she was more a young girl then a deadly spell wielding wizardress. Together with Ayako she laughed after falling victim to a few practical jokes, she even returned the favor.

But quality time eventually ended and the journey continued as they travel to encounter the wolf. She remained silent and ready to assist her new family if battle was to erupt.

A talking wolfAyako is a bit surprised that for once something threatening would consider the alternative. She intends to fulfill her promise. - " Let's stay on our guard, however, I intend to fulfill my promise and feed him every morning. " The priestess gets the nicest bowl she can get from her wagon and steps forward toward the ancient wolf and bow politely. - " Thank you for considering this peaceful alternative. Several days of food is better than blood and broken bones for one lunch. " If the wolf allows her, she prays the Kami for the best meal they can provide, hoping it provides Create food and water for 21 people, should be a lot of food.satisfaction to the guardian of this region. Ayako is brave and not afraid of the dire creature, however, she remains respectful.

Garen Mylari

As confident as he had been going in, the trek across the crown of the world was proving to be a challenge for Garen. Or, at least, one aspect in particular was starting to get to him. The cold wasn't so bad after he got used to it, and the terrain, while sometimes treacherous, was nothing he couldn't handle. The beasts were nothing worse than what he had faced before. No, the thing he was having trouble adjusting to... was the pants. If the gods had wanted satyrs to wear pants, he thought more than once over the month, they wouldn't have given us furry legs. Unfortunately, his goat-like fur was not quite sufficient for the extreme temperatures they were facing, so he got himself a pair of warm pants along with his new coat. And they itched. But, itch or no itch, he soldiered on, determined not to let petty discomforts slow down the group.

When there wasn't any work to be done, Garen took the time to get to know Mari better, listening to her stories of Minkai alongside Ameiko. It reminded him of their childhood, listening to his mother tell her own stories, Ameiko being just as eager for the tales now as she had been then. Of course, now Garen had a few stories of his own to tell, and he regaled Mari with the tale of their adventures in Brinewall Castle. He made sure not to leave out Kelda's part, and the Ulfen woman seemed glad for it.

-----------------------------------------------------

Garen stayed quiet as the odd scene unfolded in front of him, although his blades were drawn and ready should they be needed. Kelda stood just behind him, hand on her axe. He still wasn't sure how she handled the cold so well without so much as a coat. Some product of her heritage, he supposed, or possibly something to do with her warrior training.

Vagnar Akselson
left-aligned image
The journey north had, thus far, been blissfully uneventful. Vagnar relished being back in his element. Most would face an arctic trek with trepidation, but not him. Oh, he was aware of the dangers, as he’d told his friends before, but they were dangers the druid understood. Blizzards, beasts, these were things he’d faced before, things he knew he could handle.

The uneventful period had been useful, as well. He’d spent much of the time riding Zak, to the point where both mount and rider were comfortable with the arrangement. He’d also enjoyed spending the time speaking with Ayako. He wasn’t sure if was their brush with death in the tower or merely the calming presence of her sister, but the headstrong priestess seemed calmer, more contemplative. Of course, until now he hadn’t really known her at a time when they weren’t in mortal peril, so it was hard to judge.

He was atop Zak watching the caravan’s rear when word was passed down that something was happening ahead. Vagnar urged the mastodon on, and heavy feet slammed against the frozen ground as he raced forward. In the distance, he could see Ayako speaking to the dire wolf and groaned, pulling his sword and shield out. By the time he reached the front and dismounted, however, the wolf seemed satisfied. He smiled. She is maturing.

His grin vanished as the giant strode up. He didn’t seem especially threatening, but neither did he look like someone with whom they’d want to pick a fight. Vagnar took up a defensive position behind Ayako, not wanting to appear threatening but ready to defend her all the same.

The GiantThe massive giant came to a halt a few meters behind the wolf, whom at this time spun around like a dog greeting its master. The massive dire wolf which was bigger than a horse, suddenly stood up on its hind legs to place its front paws upon the giant's chest. Even with the wolf's massive size, its paws only came to the man's pectorals, showing just how large the giant was. With one hand, the giant ruffled the wolf's fur behind its ears and then grumpily said "Get down ya mutt." it was the same, gruff and horse voice which had spoken to them moments ago, and despite the insult he threw at the wolf, his eyes and actions proved he loved the wolf.

The giant squinted as he tried to stare at Ayako, it was a lot like a human trying to identify one mouse from other mice. "Er... Lady Ayako." Despite the giant speaking in a quieted whisper, it was still akin to a blow horn going off at the top of a tower. "I am Pronounced: Kay-ger-off Kjaerulff. As an honored elder of the Giant tribe who has reached 200 winters, it has become my sworn duty to watch over our ancestral lands until my dying breath. It is my duty to make sure raiders and plunderers do not sink their teeth into this resource rich area... but travelers who offer food and drink. That I think we can accommodate, no?" The giant suddenly turned to his wolf as if he was asking the question to the wolf. The wolf happily licked at the giant's hand. Kjaerulff suddenly seemed to have an idea before adding, "I don't suppose you have magic to make some ale, eh? Been a while since I had a good drink..."

Mari pictures a giant drinking, then passing out over the caravan, squashing it to bits as he falls over. She shook the picture from her mind then states, Greetongs Mr Kjerulff, I am Mari. How about another option. I can make the drink smell and taste like ale with none of the ill effects. she commented with a slight bow to show respect as she was prepared to use her prestidigitationmagic to flavor the waters.

A talking wolf- " Thank you for accepting my offering Kjaerulff. I can't conjure ale, the kami offer the purest water instead. " She is a bit surprise of Mari suggestion, men drink to forget about their problems, not for the taste. - " Mari didn't enjoy much the pleasure of alcohol to understand it would seem. Unfortunately I didn't bring with me sake purified by the gods. "

- " You have our word that we won't pillage that region or steal anything, we are not treasures hunters, we simply want to make it safely across the crown of the world. I can provide food every day if you would rather escort us through your territories. My sister is an amazing bard, maybe you can enjoy her stories on the way. In exchange, if we could learn from your two hundred years in that region, that would be quite helpful for us. We know very little of the dangers here. "

Fork in the Road
The next two weeks travelling through the sacred land or Urjuk, the group is accompanied by the most unusual of caravan guards, a Giant and his best friend, dire wolf. Kjaerulff, though a bit grumpy with out ale, is eager to have someone to talk to besides his wolf and spends much of the journey chit chatting with anyone who will talk. Of course, with his booming voice, everyone in the caravan can hear his side of the story. Along the way he tells stories of ancient Giant kingdoms that once ruled the lands before the small folk took over. There are many tales of great and noble giants fighting evil and cruel ones. Apparently not all giants are bad, but many do blame humans for the loss of the ancient kingdom. Unfortunately, human lives are far too short and history is easily forgotten. Most of the tales Kjaerulff tells do not match any of the history books but he does believe what he is saying.

Upon reaching the edge of the sacred lands, Kjareulff informs the group he can take them no father. As a token of friendship, he offers to them back pack he found a few years ago. The back pack is made for a medium humanoid so the giant couldn't even open it for fear of destroying the contents with his big fat thumbs.

Inside, the party finds a wayfinder, a Provides a +2 circumstance bonus to avoid getting lost or a +5 circumstance bonus if a person spends 1 hour studying it each day. I've been doing rolls secretly but I will need to know if anyone is studying the map on a daily basis, not that you have much else to do.map of the crown, some spoiled rations, a winter blanket. At the bottom of the bag is a pair of Boots of the Winterlands. Inside the left boot is a ring of Spell Knowledge 1[Detect Secret Doors].

After Goodbyes our party is left with a choice:

The primary route of the Path of Aganhei runs northwest through the Erutaki lands of Hasanaliat, skirting the Bearleg Lakes and the Gaarjuk Hills. North of the hills, the path follows the Taraska River through the high tundra of the Hoarwell March toward the town of Unaimo, the last major trading village before the path climbs onto the High Ice through the Koumssa Gap. This path is easier and generally faster, but the lands it crosses are more inhabited, potentially exposing the caravan to unfriendly eyes.

As an alternative route, the caravan could head due north through the Gaarjuk Hills, cutting off a wide bend of their route and avoiding more “civilized” lands. However, the hill country is far more rugged and remote, with fewer chances to resupply or seek help if trouble should ensue. The caravan would still need to ford the Taraska river, with greater difficulty than along the main route, and link back up with the Path of Aganhei before it swings north through the Koumssa Gap and climbs onto the High Ice.

On the Road AgainMari enjoyed the giants company and even shared some storied with the old guy. As they depart she too bids him farewell, then assists the others to identify the items in the backpack the giant gave them.

Looking at the boot's reminded her of how harsh the path is and how handy those boots would be. It's up to you which way to proceed. Howerver, it may come in handy to go the easy route, so we have a chance to perhaps purchase more of the boots before traversing the pass. she comments, wondering if they even have the funds for such boots.
