Planetary Nebula NGC 6302
Game
I trust fear. Fear only exists for one purpose... to be conquered.
-- Captain Katherine Janeway

Despite Starfleet’s extensive exploration of space, the origins of the universe continue to elude scientists. Using the laws of universal gravitation astronomers have, classically, been able to determine the mass of a given body, such as Sol, by observing its effect on another body such as Earth. This works when observing nearby bodies like Sol and local stars, yet when the same principles are applied to distance galaxies, the results don’t always match the observed facts.

Distant galaxies must be far heavier than they appear to fit current models, Federation scientists theorize; there must be extra mass in these galaxies which escapes detection. In order to compensate for this discrepancy, astronomers postulate the existence of another form of matter – dark matter. This matter must be able to absorb radiation such as light and x-rays, without giving off light, thus escaping detection. Federation scientists believe dark matter may comprise up to ninety percent of the universe’s mass, yet they have identified little of it in existence.

A dark matter nebula on the edge of Federation Space, Mar Oscura is irregularly shaped and more than ninety light years in diameter. Characteristic of dark matter, the nebula does not emit or reflect electromagnetic radiation, making it invisible to most sensors. The only way to detect Mar Oscura is by measuring the amount of light refraction from distant stars, refracted by the dark matter’s gravity.

The nebula was discovered in 2367 by the USS Enterprise-D which noted that the intense gravity caused gaps in the fabric of space-time. When the ship encountered these tears, they caused the point of contact to momentarily phase out of normal space causing extreme danger. This led to Mar Oscura being labeled as a class-3 navigational hazard, though with a smaller ship navigation is significantly easier.

Because the very nature of dark matter continues to elude and perplex invesitgations into the nebula have continued. Starfleet dispatched an Oberth-class science vessel – because of its small size and great maneuverability – to explore the interior of the nebula.

Twenty one hours ago that vessel, the USS Nox, sent out a distress signal. The nearest federation ship is the USS Ophiuchus, set a course for Mar Oscura.

Engage.
Gameplay Gameplay is designed to be episodic, much like the television shows or how superhero games are best designed as comic books.

This is space travel. There may be weeks or months (game time) between posts, we needn’t fill every niche and stardate with the mundane. We will show the highlights of the captain’s log. The adventures that will be taught at Starfleet Academy for centuries to come!
What I Seek Above all else I need a team.

This isn’t a game about gaining wealth or notoriety.

There is limited personal gain.

Your character won’t advance much.

The ship upgrades are few and far between.

I need individuals with the passion to be Starfleet officers. I need a bridge crew capable of leading their crew, following their orders, and in the context of the game, have fun doing it. It is important to point out that this game has a military order. You will need to follow commands, even if you don’t enjoy them. A captain may get away with skirting Starfleet once or twice via captains prerogative, but an Ensign obeys their captain.
The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based. - Captain Jean-Luc Picard, USS Enterprise NCC 1701D
Basic MechanicsThis game will use the Star Trek Adventure rules released by Mophidius. It is a very new, streamlined, and collaborative game system with flavors borrowed from Conan, Cypher, and others to make a unique story telling mechanism, which I would characterize as rules-medium. It isn't as lite as say Fate or Risus, but it isn't nearly as involved as Pathfinder, GURPS, or even Call of Cthulhu. There is a free lite version of the rules from Mophidius and I will help make the learning curve as painless as possible. The important thing is that you come willing to serve Starfleet - the rest will come in time.

To attempt a task, roll a number of d20s (usually two) and compares them to the Target Number (Attribute + Discipline) and tries to get a Difficulty.

Each d20’s result (success or failure) adds up to the total successes earned with the roll. If the number of successes equals or exceeds the Difficulty the task is successful. A Difficulty 0 task is a routine action that requires no roll under normal circumstances, while a Difficulty 1 task will be the usual fare in a game. Tasks can range all the way up to Difficulty 5 and more which would be truly incredible tasks. Any extra successes beyond the Difficulty will give you Momentum.

Momentum: █ █ █ █ █ █

Threat: █ █ █ █ █ █

Momentum is one of the key mechanics generated by rolling more successes than the difficulty to complete a task.

Uses:
  • Purchasing additional die - The first die bought this way costs 1 Momentum, the second costs 2 Momentum and the third costs 3 Momentum.
  • Create an Advantage – By spending 2 Momentum, a player can produce an advantageous circumstance relating to the action taken. This can also be used to remove a Complication in play, or generate a Complication for an opponent
  • Create a Problem – A player can declare that they are spending Momentum to make a task being performed by an adversary more difficult, at the cost of 2 Momentum per level of Difficulty increase.
  • Obtain Information – By spending 1 Momentum, a player performing an investigative or research task can ask the GM one question relating to the situation, or item, object or creature being studied. The GM is compelled to answer truthfully, though not necessarily with complete information.

Threat

Threat is the GM counterpart to Momentum and is usually spent in a similar way to empower opponents. The difference is that Threat can also be spent to add reinforcements to the bad guys, or to trigger environmental effects that could create Complications for everyone in the scene.
What to Expect
left-aligned image
To be a member of Starfleet already marks you out to be someone special, someone with the fire of curiosity, intelligence to go with it, discipline and courage. But few of us realize, until we have served, the true cost of serving. By setting forth on this path you are choosing the difficult road. You will be away from family and friends, severed from the context of your life before the Academy and sent out journeying. We follow in the greatest traditions of Human endeavor; the exploration of the unknown. But it has a cost, when we leave we will be changed by those things we experience, in ways that our friends and families will not often understand, and as our list of past missions grows, the difference will be greater and greater. Those we leave behind will change as well, and returning to those we love can often be surreal as we, altered by our experiences, meet again people we knew, but who have also changed. It is a difficult thing.

While an often repeated phrase it is also true that the crews you serve with will become your families. Knitted together by circumstance, stressful, at times, and dangerous, you will share a bond with them that we who have served rarely speak about but all understand. Leaving, being away, and coming back, these are hard, but you will have each other and those crews you serve with, bonded by shared experience, a trust like no other and friendships that will last your lives.

- Captain Katherine Unmeyer; lecture series On the Nature of Starfleet, Starfleet Academy.
Starfleet
The Prime Directive is not just a set of rules; it is a philosophy... and a very correct one. History has proven again and again that whenever mankind interferes with a less developed civilization, no matter how well intentioned that interference may be, the results are invariably disastrous. - Captain Jean-Luc Picard, USS Enterprise NCC 1701D
A Romulan Perspective

The Earthers say their primary mission is one of peace. But who equips their ships with the power to lay waste to a planet’s surface and does not use it?

Starfleet’s officers are nave.

And that is something to be exploited. While they prattle on about the right of self-determination and interstellar law, we act. If you can present a starship officer with a fait accompli, they will back off and call for negotiations. In fact, the only time they will fight is when directly attacked.

We fought a war with them once. It was glorious, and they made noble adversaries, but they seem to have lost the taste for war. They wield awesome destructive power but hesitate to use it.

And that is how you defeat them; never attack a starship directly. Engage them in futile negotiations. Let them talk (starship captains love to talk). Meanwhile, deploy your forces carefully, in secret, and hand them an irreversible situation.

Use their peacefulness against them.

Encoded message from the Tal Shiar

Starfleet serves a complex, multi-purpose role within the United Federation of Planets. From the earliest days Starfleet’s mission has always been one of peaceful exploration and scientific inquiry. However, because starships venture into unknown, possibly hostile areas, they are armed with powerful defensive weaponry, leading to a secondary, peace-keeping role. It is neither purely scientific, nor purely military, but rather a combination of the two depending on the circumstances.

First and foremost, however, Starfleet is a scientific and exploratory organization. Back in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, scientific inquiry and exploration were the purview of various private, non-governmental, and governmental organizations. You may recall from your history readings the exploits of Jacques Cousteau exploring the Earth’s oceans, CERN’s efforts to unlock the mysteries of quantum physics, and NASA’s missions to explore the Sol system (and beyond). With the founding of Starfleet, those various independent efforts were centralized and coordinated under Starfleet. After the terrors of the Eugenics Wars and World War III, humanity had tired of war. First contact with the Vulcans had shown us that we could venture out into space not as conquerors, but as explorers. This idea is embodied in our credo “to seek out new life and new civilizations”.

Starfleet’s secondary function is to defend Federation members and the Federation as a whole from hostile intent. Although every Federation member maintains some kind of planetary defense force to protect their individual star systems, Starfleet vessels patrol ninety percent of the space between to ensure free and open passage. And our exploratory efforts take us far beyond the boundaries of the Federation into potentially hostile situations.

Because starships venture into the unknown, they are equipped not only with sophisticated sensor systems, probes, and drones, but also with powerful defensive systems. Starships patrol along the Klingon and Romulan neutral zones, and in the past have been called upon to investigate the sudden disappearance of Federation colonies, protect Starfleet outposts, defend against hostile alien probes, and serve as peacekeepers between warring alien governments. Despite the tremendous destructive power a starship can bring to bear, however, Starfleet’s role has always been one of peace. Starfleet captains do not start wars, and should never “shoot first and ask questions later.”

Setting Info

Stardate: 48211.61
Earth Year: 2371

Major Players:
United Federation of Planets: Founded in 2161, the United Federation of Planets consists of over 150 planets plus their affiliated colonies all committed to a single co-operative governmental system. Starfleet is responsible for a majority of their exploratory and defensive capabilities, as well as sometimes diplomatic missions.

Klingon Empire: Originating from the planet Qo’noS in the Beta Quadrant, the Klingon Empire is a warrior dominated species and one of the major powers in the Galaxy. While there have been hostilities between the Federation and Klingons in the past, since the signing of the Khitomer Accords in 2293 the two powers have been considered allies despite several small skirmishes.

The Dominion: Established over 10,000 years ago, the Dominion is an interstellar power originating in the Gamma Quadrant that seeks to bring order to the Galaxy through diplomacy and subjugation. Ruled by the Founders, a species of shape changing aliens, and served by their genetically engineered subordinates, the Dominion has influence over hundreds of worlds and their civilizations.

Cardassian Union: The Cardassian Union was a once peaceful civilization that developed into a militaristic power to acquire new territories to support their resource-poor world. Three decades of hostilities with the Federation have only recently ceased with a signing of a treaty that established a demilitarized zone between the two powers.

Romulan Star Empire: The Romulan Star Empire is a reclusive and secretive galactic power that has only recently returned to prominence after a long period of isolationism. Based on the twin worlds of Romulus and Remus, the Romulan Star Empire spans a considerable area of the Beta Quadrant and has clashed with both the Federation and the Klingon Empire on numerous occasions.

Ferengi Alliance: Hailing from Ferenginar, The Ferengi Alliance is a patriarchal civilization whose entire culture is based around trade and profit facilitated by the 285 “Rules of Acquisition.” While Ferengi pirates have plagued the Federation even before their first official meeting in 2364, the two powers remain neutral.

The Borg: Cybernetic humanoids from the Delta Quadrant, the Borg have travelled the Galaxy assimilating over 10,000 different species to add to their Collective. There is no individuality within the Collective; each drone is linked by a hive mind to one another and given a new designation according to their place within the group.

Minor Players:
Orion Syndicate: Similar in some respects to the Ferengi but far more sinister, the Orion Syndicate has been a fixture of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants since at least the 22nd century.
The Syndicate has expanded its reach over the course of those decades, and its criminal activities now stretch into the Alpha Quadrant, touching on Cardassian and Federation space. The Syndicate is perhaps the premier known criminal organization in the Alpha Quadrant, responsible for countless acts of assassination, extortion, piracy, and racketeering.

Maquis: Many colonists on the Federation worlds now within the new Demilitarized Zone have resisted the shift to coming under Cardassian rule. These resistance cells, calling themselves the Maquis, have engaged in open terror attacks against the Cardassians, both military and civilian, and are even striking against Federation forces who attempt to maintain the peace.

Breen Confederacy: While they have not been designated as a threat, the Breen Confederacy is one of a handful of species that has earned a place on the Security Council’s ‘must watch’ list. The Federation has had little direct contact with the Breen, but the Klingons, have a long and bloody history with them. The Klingons have been reluctant to share information with us, probably due to their losses in conflict with the Breen. Starfleet Intelligence suspects that the Cardassians maintain an open line of communication with the Breen, and it is believed that the Breen and the Ferengi may have informal trade agreements in place. The Romulans also appear to have a history with the Breen though we have been unable to gather much in the way of confirmed details regarding relations between the two species.

Miradorn: While the Miradorn and their unusual twin-oriented society are generally considered a second-tier species, their technological capabilities and political holdings are sufficient to be influential within the Alpha Quadrant balance of power should they be pushed to pick one side or another.

Nyberrite Alliance: One of the species the Federation currently enjoys cordial relations with in the Alpha Quadrant is the Nyberrite Alliance. It does not hurt matters that the Klingons also have good connections with them. Nyberrite warships are said to be the equivalent of any Starfleet vessel, and the crews of Nyberrite vessels are often supplemented by officers and crew from other species and political bodies.

Tholians: Powerful Alpha Quadrant species that are, thankfully, xenophobic through and through. While the Federation and the Tholians have been at conflict in the past, even as recently as the 2350s, we currently enjoy a neutral stance with them.

Tzenkethi Coalition: One of many species the Federation has had conflict with in the past. Our war with them ended several years ago. Since then, the Tzenkethi have largely been quiet, operating in their space and leaving us to operate in ours.

The Q: One species that the Federation Security Council has marked as a threat is the collective species known as the Q. They are an omnipotent species of beings, residing in an alternate dimension they call the ‘Q continuum.’ Most of our interaction with the Q has been through one individual of their species who took a strange and special interest in Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Starfleet Intelligence hopes he remains the only curious member of the species, as even that one individual exhibited so many powerful abilities that the Federation would simply be unable to compete.

Starfleet Command and the Federation Science Council formed a committee in 2363 to discuss the state of Starfleet’s aging science and exploration vessels. While the Galaxy class was considered a success, the amount of personnel and resources required to construct one of the massive exploration cruisers was significant. The end conclusion of the committee was that Starfleet required a new science and exploration vessel that was small, easy to maintain, but had the best sensor and scientific equipment possible in a small spaceframe. The Nova class is the result.

I'm willing to concede half races as long as one parent is on the approved list and the other half is human.

As long as you've a general idea of the setting - of which there is ample material online, you'll be fine.

Name: Solan (Ren)

Species: Vulcan, male
+1 Control, +1 Fitness, +1 Reason
Kolinahr, Mind-Meld, Nerve Pinch

Physical Description: Solan has strong features and a thicker build than most Vulcans standing at 6' 1". His eyes are a very light hazelnut that match his hair both of which are framed by his broad and squared jawline.

Personality: Solan has found that in order to advance his career in leadership in Star Fleet that he has to at least mimic some human emotions such as smiling at other’s jokes, feigning interest in small-talk and other human expressions. In truth, though he understands the psychology and physiology of these, he does not truly connect emotions just as any other Vulcan that has completed the Kolinahr. Due to his skill as an emotional chameleon, there is a rumor that he is human with Vulcan ancestry and as a logical conclusion based on his actions, he takes that as a complement of his work in relating to his crew and effectiveness as a Star Fleet Line Officer. Regardless of appearances, he is very private related his personal life and home culture and will not discuss the such with non-Vulcans. If his behavior relating to his crew is challenged by Vulcans he does not feel compelled to explain by may run the logic to a superior or older family member.

Environment (Origin): Busy Colony (+Presence)

Upbringing: Artistic and Creative
+1 Insight, +2 Presence
Command increase
Observation focus
Collaboration talent (Command)

Starfleet Academy: Command
“Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end”
+2 Reason. +1 Daring
Major: +2 Command
Minor: +1 Conn, +1 Engineering
Focus: Inspiration, Starfleet Protocols, Team Dynamics
Follow My Lead

Career: Veteran Officer
Veteran talent
“Unusual is ‘not’ unusual”

Career Events:

Conflict with A Hostile Culture (+1 Fitness, +1 Security, Shipboard Tactical Systems focus)

Solan’s first mission was going normally for a Vulcan deep-space ship - boring. After years on a the busy Cheng’Du colony where every known race and culture was represented and always active and curious, the Vulcan Science Corps ship Ra Gar was an exciting an assignment as a ‘bread on bread’ sandwich.

Then the Rotar happened. By the time the cloaked disruptor battery hidden in the asteroid field power-up and fired, Solon read the face of the crew and knew what they knew - they were already dead or perhaps if very lucky, dying on the nearest moon. Most Vulcans did not consider luck.

“Are you going to at least try to recursive gravitational attractive track to Rotar-3?” His voice was a tinge incredulous. Even with master alarms klaxon and secondary explosions rocking the vessel, eyebrows around the bridge raised accusingly.

The young female at the science station looked over to the male pilot who both gave each other the same Vulcan blank stare yet clearly communicated, surprise. It was the science station officer that answered, “The data core survival module is the priority Solan, the low probability of calculating the Recrus…” a transfer capacitor cell in the wall nearest the captain who was about to comment discharged, instantly killing her and the pilot. Not waiting for the residual static to dissipate, Solan jumped in the pilot’s saddle not even looking back at the rest of the surviving bridge crew. “I’m going to have to wing this calculation but someone fire on that battery!” Salon wasn’t the ranking officer, technically he wasn't even supposed to be on a Vulcan ship but something about his presence and action that pushed the other’s to divert resources to the ship’s impulse drives. In the next hour, they were on the ground - fighting hand-to-hand with natives with only slightly less advanced technology. Somehow, out of a crew of 150 that survived the crash, twenty of the Vulcan crew survived the ground war that ran constantly for 20 days until the rescue ship extracted them.

Mentored (+1 Conn, Relating to other Cultures Focus)

“What do you see there, Solan?” Emmanuel’s voice was a smooth baritone that seemed to drift over the plains they overlooked below. Ten-year-old Solan took to the task at end if he was in school in the learning pods. His small yet confident voice answered, “I see the reclamation processors are operating at 85% efficiency, the transportation lift-drones are in their maintenance cycles and should be…” Emmanuel cut in Solan’s analysis yet somehow not seeming to interrupt. “Yes, and I’m sure the rest of your observations are equally, well, focused on the technology and science.” The retired Starfleet officer put his hand on the young Vulcan. With his other hand he pointed to a pair of children playing if field of large, yellow Sun Flowers. “And any number of observant pre-Academy students can tell me the same thing but, what do you see there?”

Solan took a few moments to consider his answer. “These are two human children, probably just starting their transition subjects.” He watched them for a full minute and then said, “They are a brother and sister and have lost their mother to a border conflict last year.”

Emmanuel took his hand off Salon’s shoulder and turned to face him. “Do you know them?” Solan shucked his head ‘no’. Then he asked, “How do you know this?”

Salon did not hesitate with his reply, “I can tell from the way they are dressed they are from one of the mining camps of Omar II. The Klingon-Ormar incidents are increasing as more dilithium veins are identified. Reports on the steams indicate that these may be increasing until some Starbase is established. Three years ago some conflict refugees resettled here. These two are brother and sister as you can see from their type of playful, yet competitive ruff-housing. The older brother has brought her to this field to keep the memory of their parents, or perhaps only their mother alive for the younger sister.” Emmanuel’s expression was puzzled so Salon continued, “The Sun Flower is a symbol of life for the imagery of the sun, life for the food its seed provides, and longevity for the oil the plant yields.” Solan turns to watch them for a moment more without commenting and then says, “They are beginning to find joy again.”

The old man looked at Salon, “You are almost correct in all regards, other than they also lost a younger brother.” Emmanuel looked deeply into Solan’s deep hazelnut eyes. It wasn’t a mind-meld but at this point in their relationship and in the coming years these talks were as close as non-Volcan would have with him. “You have a rare and precious gift in your people Solan. You see people. Not just the science that made them, the philosophy and cultures that influence them, the events and pressures that surrounds them but most of all, you just see them.” In truth, Salon felt he was just applying a thread of logic to its most obvious conclusions. He felt no connection to the two children or their plight. He simply followed the data, filling in what was missing by way of extrapolation.

Emmanuel would continue to have these kinds of talks with Solan. He never mentioned Starfleet or its mission yet it was his presence more than any other, even above those at the Academy that would make Solan the Starfeet officer that he would become.

Position Seeking: Commanding Officer: The Captain

When Solan Learned that Life Wasn’t Fair

Solan stood in front of the his final cohort of invigilators each with their own expertise and their own agendas. Outsiders thought that Vulcans somehow were free from political maneuvering when the converse was true - Vulcans have taken it to the utmost levels by applying rules of logic and reasoned discord. With a superior physical stamina than most species, a longer life and an even longer racial memory, some debates in Vulcan ceremony and government were multi-generational.

Salon had completed each of his final discords with perfect scores in each of the eleven disciplines save the final one, Moral Philosophy. The last Invigilator spoke from the high seat. “Position. It is morally defensible to reject the Vulcan tenants of Logic if the needs of the many are served.” This was a trap statement set by the Vulcan House T’Nor. House T'Nor had removed Salon’s father’s Great House of R'en from the Hall of Records of the People. Salon didn’t have a house now and would never have one. After Solan’s hour-long discourse he ended with the statement, “…though morally commendable, it is not morally obligatory.” This was the expected response and Solan executed it perfectly.

The deliberation was short as was the explanation. The Invigilator spoke curtly, “You have failed to explain your position to the satisfaction of this Council, furthermore, you application to be is hereby rejected. You will have no rights and no privileges on Vulcan, on its territories, embassies and ships.” Without comment, Solan turned and left the Great Hall of the People complete in the knowledge that fairness was only construct founded in hope. Solan did not hope, he planned and this battle was only beginning.

Salon would take all his lessons learned… to the stars.

Total newbie to the system, but I'm interested.

Any details on expected post rate? Is it 3-9 paragraphs for all roleplay samples or PER roleplay sample?

I expect minimal experience all the way around - and that's fine. I don't let mechanics get in the way of my stories.

Very interested, but unsure of how the mechanics work. Is there a downloadable rules supplement anywhere, or is everything we need to know in the opening post? Does our species have any effect on our "character sheet" or whatever it is, or is it purely cosmetic and flavor? Also, my apologies if I missed this, but when in the timeline does this take place? I'm guessing after Voyager ends, but is it before or after the movie, Nemesis and/or the Prime Timeline events of the 2009 Star Trek movie?

The year is 2371, the year voyager disappeared to the Delta Quadrant.

There is a free lite version of the rules available on Modiphius' website.

Yes race does impact your stats, but I don't want you to concern yourself with that. Build the character you want to be, regardless of whether it is the most 'powerful' build.

All right. So, as far as the timeline goes, we're post-Generations, Season One of Voyager, and Season Three of Deep Space Nine, correct? I just don't want to jump ahead to events that haven't happened yet by accident.

I think I'm gonna withdraw from this application thread. Not enough interest from other players and a few too many unknowns for my taste. Best of luck to everyone else! ^_^

Posting interest, leaning towards either an Andorian doctor from a combat medic sort of background or a Vulcan first officer with unusual views on logic. Though a human (sort of, one of those alien species that looks and seems completely human but isn't because "reasons") communications officer/people person/space hippie is growing on me.
