January 17, 2015 Jack's: In and out of the Box

It was much like Jan remembered it, without the vague fuzziness that memory seemed to hold over some thoughts. Jack's was, as Jack's had been for many years, the quintessential, stereotypical dive biker bar. The neon flickered in a mind numbing pattern and declared that 'Jacl' was 'OlE'. From his memory it seemed that it had gotten worse, as he was pretty confident that it had previously read 'Jack' was 'OPE', though apparently no one who worked at the place seemed inclined to remedy the situation which had clearly gotten worse.

The place itself smelled of stale beer, acrid, ancient nicotine and a lingered scent of age associated with things one might never wish to see in any light other than the faded, orange tint of the interior lights. There was but a handful of people inside to go with the handful of bikes outside, a good fifteen or so on a quick headcount, and per the standard, only the quick look up to see who had entered and without the immediate recognition, no one seemed interested to see anything more.

There was still that slight grime to anything anyone touched, the sort that was not quite visible, but affected the texture of each and every item in the place. Despite the dinginess of the place, it seemed a comfortable place, like a well worn pair of boots, well past the time that they looked shiny and new, but despite the scuffs and tears, they fit like a perfect glove.

Jack was at the bar, granted the old man had always been at the bar, and looked every inch the way he had the last time the two men had spoken. Every inch of him was the stereotypical bar tender of a grungy gangster biker bar, and yet as he saw Jan approach, a single brow arched along with the toss of a cloth over his shoulder.

"Well... well well, lookie who the cat dragged in. What can I getcha tonight, and who?"

Jan parked a few blocks away from Jack's to give him a refreshing stroll up to the bar's door. Plus, if he remembered correctly, the amount of possible fights made parking too close a liability. Furthermore, as much as he enjoyed his cargo van, he had been told it looked like a "Scary Candy Man" Van. Jan had no interest in falling into a vampire stereotype. Or at least something he pictured as a vampire stereotype.

And so his thoughts weaved around the subject as he made his way over to Jack's. He gave a few meaningless nods to various people he figured he might recognize as he made his way to the bar. Standing there he glanced across the bartop, taking in everyone sitting down enjoying a drink. Even if he wasn't looking for Morgan, it was a common practice for him to feel comfortable in an establishment. Plus it couldn't hurt to find other people to chat with, there seemed to be a lot he was missing. And Jan really did not like not knowing things. He dealt with that enough on a fairly regular basis.

He smiled at Jack as he came over. "Vieux Carré. Rittenhouse Rye please, Stirred. Up. Thank you." His order was fast and efficient. He then paused, fighting through a sudden memory lost. "Yes. Wrong bar for that. You don't have Bénédictine, or any decent Cognac, do you now?" Jan surveyed the back bar, not seeing much besides the mainstream bottles. "Do you even have a bar-spoon..." He murmured this beneath his breath, not seeing even the simplest cocktail station. He attempted his least arrogant smile in an attempt to calm the situation. "Sorry about that Jack, As you can tell it's been a bit. I will take a Bud Heavy, and a shot of Rittenhouse. And I am here to see Mister MacMillan, if he is still around. Thank you Jack."

Jack seemed more than nonplussed by the series of orders, alterations and small whisper. An ever present, gentle smile such that one might expect him to keep the same even as he used that bat, if Jan was remembering correctly, to remind a patron that fights stayed on the 'other' side of the bar. "Ah you know how it is, most the guys round here don't even know how to say them things, let alone that you can drink em. I do got a rather nice bottle of whiskey I might be persuaded to crack open one of these nights, but I promise ya nothing."

Even as he spoke, the gentle cadence of a man who had been born and raised on the coast, the drink was being crafted. A creature of habit, he knew his bar well and did not even need to look as he slid the final order across. "The Master arrived a short while ago, you are in luck, he had not been in the last couple of weeks. Take the right through the employee doors. A young gal is down there too, don't mind her, like really don't, she is pretty tight with Master Rails, might say she is his ol lady ya know?"

Drink in hand, information offered, more then he had asked but then that was the way of things, ask a simple thing and wait for what other little crumbs might be trickled along. That the brute of a man and so called leader of the Brujah apparently had an old lady, was indeed something to tuck away, even if he could not quite recall why he ought to, not yet at least.

Jack's nonjudgmental remark, and sly smile was a welcomed relief after the previous formalities. Despite the oblivious differences in clientele, Jan felt much more comfortable here then anywhere he had been before. Jan watched as Jack poured the drink, simple and effective. A true Bartender. Now that was something worthy of respect. With a glint in his eye, Jan downed the shot, sliding the glass back towards Jack. "Be lovely if you would crack that bottle sometime I'm lurking about, but I won't count on it old buddy. Thanks for the drink and the knowledge." Jan flipped through his pockets, eventually finding a crumpled twenty dollar bill. He smoothed it out before laying it neatly on the bar. "That'll cover still I hope. Ain't moved up to Yuppie prices yet, have you?" Jan chuckled at his own little joke.

Taking his beer, he set a mental timer in his head. Twenty minutes and then he would have to find himself in the restroom. He hated that he vomited before even being drunk these days, but it came with the immortality, and blood drinking. There wasn't much he could really do about it. He followed Jack's instructions, making his way int the back. For some reason the idea that the Brujah had an old lady, or even was here, seemed vital to Jan, though the reason why entirely eluded him. The last thing he wanted was to be so forgetful right before an important meeting. Ideally it would be the only information he would forget. With these final thoughts he presented himself before the leader of his clan.

His laugh was light and rich, that tone of one who had a true appreciation of the truth behind the joke. A nod of his head as he caught the bill between his fingers and left Jan to his whole purpose for entering the bar. That little tid bit still stood out, a bit of information with which he had yet to understand the import of, yet knew that all information had point and reason, random was not something which seemed likely.

Still, he had been here once, twice before his Sire had decided to uproot him to finish out his training, his 'childehood' elsewhere, and it seemed really that the place had not changed at all. Still there was something comforting in familiarity, as slight as it was as he stepped through the Employee Door and took the directions. Another door, the heavy metal reinforced and one might doubt that most mere mortals could move it easily, it was hard enough in his own state, but it still slid open, silently on top of that. The light from below spilled up into the stairwell with the soft strains of Fleetwood Mac filtering toward him.

His foot steps sounded almost hollow as he descended, though once below the room was filled with a muffled warmth, the effect possibly due to soundproofing, though it still made it cozy. Dreams was being sung so sweetly out from the jukebox in the corner, and the source, the reason for his trip here, was seated unceremoniously in one of the three oversized armchairs, opposite the two sofas, one of which was currently 'owned' by a young woman who reminded him of those girls who had run away to escape, only to find out the world was far worse then home had ever been. Young but hard, she still was the first to acknowledge his arrival.

"Uh, hello?"

The tone said it all, she did not know him, though that he had arrived down into this private lounge meant he was supposed to be here, in some variation of the word at least, and she was not entirely sure of where her place was in the pecking order in how to respond to him.

MacMillan slowly turned his head around, those blank eyes and just as equally bland expression told Jan nothing, and yet that was probably the best, for the man was far more dangerous when emotions were evident. "Why why hello, has been a moment or more, come come sit, sit, the night is young and the fishing is oh so productive."

A small wave of his hand to invite Jan to join them, to pick a sofa or one of the two remaining chairs. Off to the right side a door was closed, there was definitely more to this place then the large lounge, but at the moment, it seemed that this was all there was on show and it was now this trio who were present to take it all in.

Interesting. Interesting indeed. Jan could feel a whirl of creative excitement overflow him. There was a vampire here, of some status, unsure of his very own. For all this lady knew, Jan could be an envoy of a neighboring prince, or perhaps a solitary researcher of some renown, or a childe of a legend. Of course he also could just be Jan, the once aging bar fly who had been given a second life chased by those destined to desire all the knowledge he possessed. But that was no matter. He didn't have to be that, at least not now. Oh how he wished he could access the Madness Network, gain a bit of hidden Intel he could use to further expand on this lady's seed of doubt. He was in fact an earlier generation, or so he had been told. That was apparently important.

He might of stood there for a tad moment too long, soaking in the moment. Catching himself, a silly grin formed on his aged features, as he gave a short nod of respect to MacMillan. Hopefully he remembered Jan's wandering thoughts, and constant troubles. While they had never spent much time together, they had spoken about the Madness Network before, brief. One might say Very brief, Jan's mentor had not found such conversations suited for Jan during his younger years. Or maybe he was remembering it wrong.

"Yes, it has been, Master MacMillan. A pleasure to see you. I felt it vital for me to see you upon my return to Portage." He made his way over to one of the chairs facing MacMillan. Almost as an afterthought, though a curious mind would notice much more tact, he glanced over at the lady. "Hello Miss. I don't believe we have met. I go by Jan."

Was this what they had meant, that the unknown among the paranoid engendered cautious respect, while the known only birthed plans of upheaval and betrayal? Ah but it made a certain form of sense, for one could not plot against one they did not know and understand. Fascinating and yet not really the reason he had arrived in this place, and yet a thought to consider, ponder at another time perhaps.

"Maggie..." Her lips twitched in that way which suggested that his name did not mean anything to her BUT she was aware that meant little. Either the little girl had a huge streak of paranoia for some valid reason, or she was only about his age herself, new to this whole kind of insanity that the undead brought to one's life. Where... where did that thought come from? Instinct, insight, like recognizing like?

"Vital, vitality a sense one should never disregard. Indeed, a wise choice of events, do you think the we ought to be using the shiny lures or go old school, worm and hook, what indeed is actually effective these nights? " The Primogen's lips curled into a vague smile, as his head tilted and sent a few loose curls to tumble over his left eye as he watched Jan curiously. This, far more then the meeting with the Prince, put one into a position where one just was not entirely sure, for of his kind, his blood... there was that unknown that seemed all the more present when one compared it to the others who walked the night.

Good. Good. She still had no idea of what he was. He thought what when he meant who; He really had become a monster. A monster who smiled though, and cleaned beer lines. Occasionally soda machines. He just nodded at her responding with her name. Then he spent a moment tasting the name in his mouth, seeing the various ways his tongue could ensure it remained in his memory.

He kept his main focus on his Primogen. That was why he was here, and he wasn't going to allow a new encounter to diverge him of his purpose. Of course MacMillen spoke in riddles again, something Jan had grown used to with his own personal discussions with himself. "Shiny Lures are mesmerizing. They glitter in the water, creating the illusion of a tasty fish, or exotic morsel. Of course it is all a ploy, a trick for either pleasure of nourishment. Whereas the worm and hook is blunt. It is direct, and cruel. It offers one living meal in order to tear another out of their home to be eaten. Curiously are we speaking about the Masquerade and the Sabbet? One full of facades, the other not hiding."

Conflicted or confused, maybe it was both or neither, though she did make a small wrinkle of her nose as Jan began to speak, clearly she was accustomed to such odd talk even if she thought it was odd. It helped a bit to explain that she had clearly a lot of experience with his Family, or perhaps only the Primogen, and yet even if only him, a good thing to know. Why... well that might still remain to be known, but knowing was still important.

Morgan's one expression shifted, melted into one that, for the briefest of moments, flickered the gaze of a predator, a killer, a dangerous thing, and just as quickly it vanished, left him with a near delirious smile of pure delight. A childish expression if ever there was one, a little boy being told he was on his way to Disney. "A truth, a truth, do we seek to deceive and kill or offer dinner before consuming, ah perfection, perfection, the mirror shines so bright. We speak, we speak of something which lurks in the waters, is it an eel, a fish, I cannot say, but it simmers with an anger my lips taste and my heart leaps for. We are hunting Death while he hunts us in return.

Direct, cruel... it is they who danced before in ploys and suave lyrics who have lead us to this precipice, I say it is now perchance a moment for the honesty of what we are be allowed loose. Ah... a lovely night overall, how was the trip here?"

Glee, twisted glee abruptly ended as the bland affect returned once more, the Primogen's words returning back to that which actually connected to Jan's arrival here in the city. The glimmers at the Elysium, these words now, something, something was... was?

The words were strange for Jan, but he suspected as much from Morgan. He had hoped that he had broken through the previous innuendo, but it seemed that the next layer was just more innuendo. It would frustrate most, but Jan couldn't get frustrated by it, he knew he was stuck with the same continuous fate. Then it struck him. Hunting Death while he hunts us in return. Could this be a reference to the final deaths he had heard about earlier. But the water, the shimmering, what Jan had read as the masquerade itself, was that what was creating this final death, or had the metaphors moved on to new topics. His mind was moving into run on sentences, which usually meant he had to tread carefully less he lose another piece of his memory. Temporary lose, but who knew what that memory did while it was gone.

"My trip here was uneventful. Luckily I was able to get an apartment fairly quickly, and my storage unit here was unmolested. I hope to get back into business within a week or so. I even got young Riley, he should make a good assistant, oh never-mind." Morgan didn't really care about these things. Jan stopped himself from going any further into his life story. Plus there was always the new lady alongside him. "I work in the Draft Beer Industry." He told her curtly, as if it was highly privileged information.

Turning back to Morgan he tried to take on a serious tone. "I spoke with the Prince. He told me there were some final deaths within the city. Is this the Death that you are both hunting and being hunted by? Honesty is all I have desired among these decades of travelling."

At least the girl seemed to be use to discussions in which she was not directly invited, but was, by proxy, a part of... in that she managed to sit still and attempt to look like she was not quite listening. Morgan seemed unconcerned, so that at least indicated that he felt nothing said here, at least at this point, would cause any issues. It helped that this was the Primogen, the pinnacle of authority within his clan, a person that was ideal to follow his lead, one less thing to consider, to talk about.

A small flicker of thought whispered as he posed his last question. Was it his own, was it another's who had interjected? And yet.... was it important? Is someone Death?

MacMillan did not seem concerned about his near bunny trail, indeed he seemed rather rapt in his attention to each word Jan spoke, as if somehow the elder, in appearance at least, man might hold within his vocabulary, some great secret to be uncovered. The small curve of his lips, something caught between a grin and a grimace, and on consideration of the topic, it was likely a grimace, altered his otherwise neutral face with an eerie presentation of emotion. "Honesty is a beautiful thing, a rare pearl in a cocoon, so many could learn from such a seemingly simple statement. Ah indeed... Death walks and we seek it before it seeks us first. But us, what is us... it is not I who seeks, no not I, and yet it must be sought, for it is a roaring lion, seeking those whom it might consume and those who refuse to look into the mirror still reflect, none can escape Death. A troubled time, my apologies, that the welcome to this place is not as it ought, no ribbons, no bows, but a hearse seeking out its contents."

Maggie made a small sound at this admittance from the Elder, almost a small cooed noise of pain or discomfort. Whatever it was that she either knew or worried about, it did indeed seem that there was something drastically amiss beneath the facade of his home.

Jan's gaze quickly turned towards Maggie. It started to dawn at him that this unnecessary third wheel had done little besides listen. Jan had spent much of his life observing those around him, whether from being behind the bar or sitting at it. It was always to one's own self-interest, and he did not know much about this lady. Nor her powers. She could be lubing him up for someone to take a gloved hand and tear his memory to shreds. And even if that was not the case, she was listening to things that he may not have wanted heard. Even if Morgan trusted her, it didn't mean he did.

"I would love to hear your thoughts on this situation, Maggie. Be nice to hear the thoughts of someone from Clan...." He allowed his sentence to purposefully fade, a leading statement. It is clear he is lacking in trust.

After giving Maggie a moment to collect her thoughts, he turned to Morgan again. "Honesty is pure. But at times we can only be honest to ourselves, for who else will be honest to those who reside in the darkness." Part of this statement was half-heartily meant for Maggie, as if to prove a point. But what was the point, did Jan even know. "When Death walks upon our soil, does it wear dark black robes and carry a farmer's tool, or should I keep my eye out for someone with a different demeanor. If Death must be sought, how should I go about finding it. That is what you desire, even if you don't seek it, is that true? The Prince is worried about it, and you see it as inevitable. Of course if I did this for you I would ask if you would assist me in another matter. A..." He eyed Maggie suspiciously. "...Personal Matter."

"Gangrel." Her voice was a soft whisper with which to fill in the gap he offered her before he continued along to finish his conversation with one Morgan MacMillan. The man seemed ever more rapt as Jan continued along, the light grin crinkled into the typical stillness and flat affect of his personality. It never reached his eyes, those orbs still haunted and dead of emotion, which made it all the more powerful, if one might put it that way.

"There was a time, that robes of night, a scythe, a red plague, a crimson death, a stalking of the lands in such dramatic fashion... though one might desperately hope that the touch of such dramatics is no longer at the forefront of most the pawns on the field. The knight is on the prowl while the Queen watches with more then a passing interest for all he acts. Ah, ah indeed, does the cleaner wish to flush the clogged pipes of this oh so ancient city? One never knows what might come tumbling out of the dark."

There was a level of ominous amusement in his tone as those oddly curved lips slowly settled once more back to their usual state of positioning. "The box from which they hunt, their walls are to high, why they sit in a box is left for one to ponder, cats in a rats nest while it stares them in their faces. Would you, would you go check the pipes for what clogs them for me? Tits for tats... of which I have neither, hakuna matata my dear one, hakuna matata."

A small arch of his brow as for the first time his attention truly shifted to take in the 'listener'. "Share, share little one, your thoughts are a jumble and your tongue is in a tizzy."

She grimaced at his words, the small curl of her nose almost cute if not for the slightest hint that she was doing her best to not bare her teeth at them both. "A couple of stupid shovel heads were rounded up last night, suckers were cowering in this old building over near the rec center.... said some kid had slaughtered their priest. I mean pretty sweet that someone offed the latest bunch of Sabby trouble for us, cept we aint got no one saying the did it, and we sure as hell aint got no kids around here... I think someone is hunting us Mister Jan, someone or something, looking for revenge or maybe they just mean as hell, and I for one don't wanna become lunch."

Gangrel! The animalistic clan. Jan had not dealt with many of their kind before, and he was certain there was a reason for it. He did not enjoy being around those of violence, at least not for long, and Gangrel... well they always seemed to complicate things. One of the last people he would want listening in was a Gangrel, imagine the violence that could occur if they knew more about the network.

He let these thoughts ruminate for a moment, before putting them on the back burner. Morgan was speaking, more riddles, but the interest and amusement he showed excited Jan. This was a moment where he was getting true information, rather than having to figure out all the hidden meanings to things. "Yes the cleaner would love to flush the lines. It is a necessary part of the business. Too many bars let mold fester and grow, making the beer sour. Customers don't want to spend their money on that which will make them sick. How could I sit by and watch such things occur among my home." Perhaps that last sentence was meant to erk the Gangrel, or perhaps it wasn't. Jan didn't even know, only that he didn't trust or enjoy the company of this Gangrel.

Was Morgan accepting the deal? Was there even a deal? Tit for Tat; now that was an English saying; 1558. One that meant equivalent retaliation. That could mean so many different things. Perhaps retaliation for those who were killed, or perhaps retaliation for what Jan would do for Morgan. Also why did he know that, his own personal mission is becoming all more important. "I would be honored to check the pipes for you, Morgan. I only ask..." How to phrase this properly with this newcomer alongside them. "...there is a network I am most interested in. I believe that I must expand my knowledge of its functions less I use it inappropriately. But again that is a conversation for a private time if you would grant me such a moment."

As if to stop the newcomer from thinking too much, Jan immediately turned to her. "Shovelheads? That is very interesting. None of us are interested in playing with final death, but if their is a hunter, Death so to speak, roaming, it must be understood. All things must be understood, or else when confronted one may just fail. Perhaps I would be able to speak with these Sabbet youngbloods? Or did someone play Death themselves, and shove a stake through their hearts?"

Morgan smiled, the sudden, rapid shift of muscles seemed almost as if his face had cracked, morphed into a monster to swallow and consu.... no, no it was just a smile and that flicker, that momentary thought of the monster, the beast was just that, a thought and nothing else. "Indeed, connections, important things that often the youth fail to grasp until they are much older, so pleased you are not like they... indeed..." He seemed almost gleeful, had Jan somehow asked something else, was there a misunderstanding, ah but no, he had been vague but clear to one who knew and MacMillan seemed to confirm this in his response, the reason why it delighted him would be a mystery for another time.

Maggie, for all that she was most likely a feral dog, seemed nonplussed about the Malkavian Elder's reaction, her own nose only wrinkled a bit when Jan directed his question about the Shovel Heads to her. She did not immediately respond, but looked to Morgan a moment, as if the little cur sought permission. "We kept the eldest of them... yeah, ashed the others cause aint no reason to keep them all, too dangerous really. You gotta... well if you go talk to them, cant be talking to others, Mo says yes, but you gotta know that, this aint for general conversation huh?"

So they were not completely stupid, and whatever silent question she had asked MacMillan, Mo?, his answer had provided enough permission that she felt she could tell him as much as she just had. At least she was trained?
