A prelude to the Lost Mine of Phandelver

Southeast of the city of Neverwinter, in the shadow of the Neverwinter Wood sits a small, prosperous, frontier farming village named Pendle. Twenty years ago, a group of farmers, craftsmen, and merchants set out, from the relative safety of the Neverwinter countryside, to establish a new village in the rich soil that flourished after the eruption of Mount Hotenow. The village grew quickly, supplied by wood from Neverwinter Wood, productive wells, and the rich farmland. The villagers, wary of the dangers that lurked in the forest, erected tall wooden palisades to fortify the village. The farms outside the walls were more exposed, but for a generation, the farmers lived in relative peace.

But in the last few weeks, whispers of trouble have been circulating through the village. Two nights before, a young boy, barely ten years old, was found, covered in blood, limping to the village gate. He told a tale of terror - his whole family was massacred by a band of goblins: men, women, and children were killed. The boy survived only because he was left for dead, hidden under the bodies of his sisters who were trying to protect him when they fell.

The presence of goblins was not new to Pendle; the villagers and the surrounding farms had fought off goblin invaders in the past, but it was always small, disorganized bands that were driven back into the darkness of the Neverwinter woods. But now something had changed. This was the third farm in a month to be destroyed. The goblins were attacking in larger numbers. The villagers were at a loss as to why.

After the most recent attack, the town elder, Ansel, called together the villagers and representatives from the surrounding farms to hold a council on what should be done. As a prelude to the council, Ansel stood atop the Pendle mound in the center of town to share the news of the latest attack. He paced warily as the villagers gathered round to listen to what he had to say.

Finally, as the crowd settled, he began to speak. "Friends, I have called you together with dark news! Two nights ago, a young boy survived a brutal attack on his family's farm..." In the distance someone cried out, "Seal the gates!" There was a murmur in the crowd. Ansel looked in the direction of the call and his face went white. From his vantage on the hill, he was able to see a swarm of small dark figures pouring across the plain toward the village...

About the gameThis will be a game of the Lost Mine of Phandelver, a D&D 5E This will be my first time DMing on RPGCrossing, so it will be a starter adventure for me too!starter adventure, using the Fifth Edition Funnel from Ten Red Crows Press. Each player will start with two randomly generated level 0 characters. Surviving characters will go on to play the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure. The final game will have 4-5 characters who should be at level 5 by the end.

If your first character dies, you will be able to play your second character. If your second character dies, you will be out of the game. Session zero acts as the main character selection process and a funnel for the adventure, so not everyone will go on to become an adventurer.

Characters will be generated at random. As a result, some characters will be stronger or weaker than others. Your race, sex, occupation, and even your name will be chosen at random. If this bothers you, this isn't the game for you!

Based on how session zero goes, I may add a few twists to the original story in the Lost Mine of Phandelver.

Posting rate is expected to be around 2 times per week.

The applicationThe character creation process is described here. You must also do your dice rolls in that thread. DO NOT roll dice in this application thread.

The deadline for applications is Oct 17, 2021 at 11:59pm PDT. If there are 12 or fewer applications, everyone can enter the funnel. If there are more than 12 applications, I will select 12 characters to enter the funnel.

FAQ
  • Which classes will the characters be able to adopt beyond level 0? If it's an officially published D&D 5e book, the class / subclass should be ok. If you are unsure, feel free to ask.
  • How will the character selection process work? We got over 12 applications! Once the character creation window closes, I'll PM 12 people and ask them to join the game. We will probably get started towards the end of the following week.
  • Do you want us to find a bond for our secondary character as well? No, you don't need (but you're welcome to if you want to). We can figure out bonds for secondary characters as they enter the game.

Horace was one of the first few people, who showed Seben any kindness and understanding, often carving toys for her, when she was a kid. The girl quite often visits dwarf's workshop, laughing and pointing out errors in his small sculptures of dogs and wolves. Over time, she also gave him a few tips about handling wild hounds, to make sure he's safe, whenever he decides to venture into the woods to gather materials on his own.

Appearance:
Seben is a very scrawny, green-ish, young girl, who is a great example, that tieflings and goblins don't mix very well. She has long, goblin-like ears and a pair of curved back horns. Her dark-blonde hair is kept in a messy mullet.
Most of the time, even on warmer days, she can be seen wearing a loose, beige coat, often off her shoulders. Other than that, she wears a white, sleeveless shirt, loose, dark pants and sturdy leather boots. On her neck are three necklaces, each with one dog fang, keepsakes from her previous pets.
The girl is always surrounded by her four trained dogs, who serve as a great protection.

Personality:
Saben didn't have a perfect start in life. Getting abandoned by her biological parents and spending all her time at Pendle made her modest and grateful for everything she can have. She easily empathizes with other people and tries her best to always cheer them up. However, she doesn't really share the same compassion to the animals, seeing them more as tools. Saben is also a great liar. She rarely has a real reason to deceive others but she often does it out of pure boredom, wondering how far she can stretch the truth.

Why are you in Pendle?
My biological parents abandoned me there when I was born. At least I ended up in good hands and grew up with Pendle being my whole world. I never really had a reason to leave this place.

Is there a person in the Pendle area that you care about?
Miss Margaret, that old woman, who lives on that farm on the outskirts. She took me in and raised me to being who I am now. I often helped her with animals and it tough me a lot about them, with time becoming my profession.

Personality: Belal is the embodiment of the sentiment "It is what it is", never looking out for grandure or elevation of his own station. He is a realist, with his limp and his poor constitution he is very aware that short of one like him being born into money most will just fizzle out in history. He is slow to do much of anything, some think he is lazy however he is just always fatigued. Should there be a festive event he'll attend sitting close to the food so as not to walk too far, he'll engage in one slow dance then go home early. He sees no future out of moving out from Pendle and why should you, as Belal knows the open road is writhe with danger.

Why are you in Pendle? Born and raised, Belal's parents are second generation Pendleians and have no pride for it.
Is there a person in the Pendle area that you care about? If you call the family horse Spotty a person...

My guy if chosen will be the weirdest Sorcerer if he makes it that far. I'm thinking of a storm sorcerer that uses lightning in an attempt to make things grow faster.

Nice He has quite the range of stats! It would be fun to see how he uses his charisma in social situations too

Appearance: Serephine is young woman in her early 20's and is 6'5" feet tall. Her large size only makes her the center of attention, as her looks bring any villagers head over heels for her. She has raven black long hair, her attire is really well made even though it looks like any other common fabric you find in any other store, this is mostly cause her father is a really good tailor. However she has a frailness in all kinds of physical attributes, so her skin is a sickly pale color, especially when it's sunny.
Personality: Serephine looks calm and collective, but is really a mess of nerves in the inside. She's never been much of a talker, her fragile and weak body doesn't give her much confidence. Whenever someone does talk to her, she would breakdown crying. But she has a side to her that she doesn't want people to know about. Serephine takes great pleasure in inflicting pain and dominating others. Her sick and twisted pleasure can only be compared to a drows, weirdly enough she doesn't feel at all nervous when doing this. However she's too self-conscious of these traits and tries to keep quiet about it.

Waah, huh! Why am I here, oh well I used to live at a place called Waterdeep but my Papa had business troubles and so we move in here to avoid business troubles. Huh, what's that? What do I do here? Oh I usually help the sheriff in community service at the jail. Would you like to join... Oh, uh, nothing, that was nothing. Please, ignore that!

What, is their someone I care about, well that person would be my Papa of course. What's he look like, Uhm, his tall, taller than me. A lot of people at the bar like making fun of his height, sometimes passerbys scream that his a giant freak but their just wrong. His a great tailor and a great father than any daughter could have. So what if he's 12 feet tall and has greener skin, he wouldn't hurt a fly.


Back-up Character
My character concept on my backup is of a cool-headed cowgirl with some fey affiliation. I rolled decent enough with this one but I'm not gonna flesh her out yet. I will do my best to make sure my 1st character survives through this crisis and gets to live through another day. But if she dies, I'll just go flesh this deputy out then.

Considerably doughier than the image attached would suggest (I just couldn't find a good one.) He thanks the gods that his prodigious dwarven facial hair covers his turkey neck. Red-nosed and with a receding hairline, he is definitely starting to show signs of middle age as he enters the back half of his second century.
Personality: Patient and easy-going with other people, but can get wrapped up in his work to the point of obsession.
Why are you in Pendle? Amongst dwarves, he is a mediocre craftsman at best. But amongst humans...
Is there a person in the Pendle area that you care about? Loves to make toys for the village children as practice, and hands them out for free to anyone who seems down.

You wanna bond to my backup? She's kind of a defense attorney, so she's probably constantly butting heads with Serephine over her treatment of prisoners. Nathalie can learn a few ways of hurting people by watching in horror, and Serephine can get some insight into how to talk to people more convincingly.

Yeah that makes sense. Besides you can't do much on trial when you don't have the Charisma for it. Sounds good to me.

Wanna bond to Horace? I know he'd be delighted to give a lonely little firebrand of a tiefling orphan a hobby horse or two. She could give him some pointers on canine anatomy for his sculpture later in life.

Bond: Wisdom- Skye played a game of Chess with Arnost and taught them a few things, but also learned how to be a gracious loser when they beat her.

Skye is a pretty young woman in her late teens. Her skin is a soft terra-cotta color, speckled with a star-field of dark freckles. The Page's amber eyes twinkle in the light and show a deep wisdom behind them. Her hair is long and curly and is a mixture of dark brown and lighter streaks. While working, Skye keeps her hair tied up into a messy bun on the top of her head, but allows a few errant curls to hang down in her face. Her clothing is simple and practical. She does however wear the red cloak of a member of the Red Fellowship, the clergy of the Red Knight, although the lowest rank insignia of 'Page' is evident. Typically a follower of her age would be a 'Squire' by now.

Personality

Skye is a quiet and calculating youth, who has a kind demeanor. The young Page's life if full of structure and routine, and she sticks to it to a 'T'. In fact there is an almost ritual like way she does most things, and she is often uncomfortable if she has broken this routine. In addition, Skye often thinks up of unique solutions to problems that even her Dame hadn't considered.


Why are you in Pendle?

Skye came to Pendle at the age of 7 as a Page to Dame Amayah Clarke, a Cleric and Holy Strategist of the Red Lady. The Dame was sent here on a mission to establish a new Temple and teach the ways of tactics and military strategy to the locals. Skye was given to the Dame to train her by her parents, and she has not seen them since. Since then, Skye has taken to the trade of Farrier to service her Knight's horse, but has also opened this service to the town as a whole. The town is rather fond of her work and has commended her on her attention to detail. Along with maintaining the Dame's gear and horses, Skye has been studying history and tactics, but she as much more to learn. Now 18, she should have become a Squire already... but she hasn't quite got a handle on combative arts. She has however begun to manifest the ability to pray for Holy bolts to manifest in true times of defense.

Is there a person in the Pendle area that you care about?

Aside from the deep Master/Apprentice relationship Skye has with Dame Amayah, she has grown rather fond of a local merchant's son by the name of Elias. Elias brings in his fathers draft horses that draw their wagons to market, and chooses to stick around while Skye works. The two bashfully trade looks and pleasant conversation, but it seems that both of them are too timid to make a move.

Personality: Maisy stares off into the sky quite a bit. She talks to the bugs, trees, and animals. She hardly ever talks to anyone even when she's helping with a new lock or the like.

Why are you in Pendle? She wandered into town and set up a little tent with a sign "Locksmith" She can't remember why and doesn't really care either. Perhaps mister badger has a good idea?

Is there a person in the Pendle area that you care about? Mr. Badger is her best friend. He lives by the old oak and while everyone thinks he's mean Maisy knows better. He's her friend!

Could use a bond.
If she gets to 1st level she's going druid.
