Citadel of the Unseen Sun

Applications are now closed

Citadel of the Unseen Sun

*No, this has nothing to do with The Sunless Citadel

In Medias Res

You find yourselves sweaty and covered in muck after enduring a week of grueling travel. The sky above you looms black, lit only with the silvery glow of the moon—a common sight in the Ostoyan Empire, where the sun has vanished forever from the sky.

A week ago, you accepted a quest from an old man in the backwater town of Lunsk: Recover a tarnished old circlet from a mausoleum somewhere in the eastern woods of the empire. All around you stand skeletal, petrified trees—and through a gap in the branches, you see your destination.

Your characters will begin having already accepted the quest from the Nightseer Sage. While a little railroady, more choices will open up as the story progresses.

How did you get here?
right-aligned image
About a week prior, each member of this adventuring party gathered in the Tithewater Tavern in a backwater Ostoyan town called Lunsk.

While drinking at the Tithewater, an old man with a well-trimmed white beard and an expensive-looking tunic beneath opulent robes approached and offered you a mercenary job. He called himself the Nightseer Sage, speaking with an unplaceable foreign accent. He offered a sum of 2,000 gold pieces to the party, contingent on their recovery of an ancient circlet. He revealed the circlet’s past life as a lich’s phylactery—now, though, it is apparently just a historical artifact the Nightseer Sage longs to possess.

The Nightseer Sage said that the circlet lies in a long-forgotten mausoleum called the Penumbral Vestibule. Legend has it this mausoleum was once a part of the mysterious civilization sprawling beneath the Ostoyan Empire—and that it grants entrance to the
subterranean Necropolis from the surface.

The Nightseer Sage had no idea where within the Penumbral Vestibule this valuable former phylactery lies, and he knew nothing of the mausoleum’s layout.

He coolly quipped, “You’re the adventurers, after all. If I knew these things, I would get the circlet myself!”

The Nightseer Sage evaded questions about his background, simply supplying his identity as a wealthy socialite from a foreign land. He claimed to be operating under an assumed name, “like most people of interest in the Ostoyan Empire,” and that revealing his true identity would put him and his family at risk.

Q & A

Quote:
are you allowing Tasha's Origins rules
No, custom origins from Tasha's are not allowed.

Quote:
Is the tone of the game intended to be equally 'grimdark' and serious? As opposed to more Heroic/fantastical
The tone of the setting is firmly set in grimdark. Think of a mashup between Dragon Age and Castlevania and you should be pretty close.

Quote:
are you expecting morally grey/evil characters
Most of the people in the world are certainly going to be looking after themselves and their families, etc., above others. So, most characters you come across would likely be morally grey, though there are certainly some do-gooders about. Evil characters will likely not be considered, unless you do a really good job of convincing me how they would work in a group dynamic (and not attempt to murder the party while they sleep).

Quote:
How much flex is there for us to create in the setting for backstory purposes - Groups/Institutions/Guilds/Towns etc - off the cuff, or would you prefer something more generic and to work on details via PM? Or indeed, none at all?
The setting is fairly fleshed out, so I would prefer players to color within the lines as far as creating their own major cities and world spanning organizations. Small towns and local groups should be fine for players to create and build their backstories around. If anything is truly setting-breaking, I will let you know.

Quote:
Artificer is in Tasha's, but obviously doesn't work in every setting. Does it fit here?
No, sorry. Forget to mention no artificers exist here.

work in progress Name: Deamon

Race: Drow

Class: Fighter( plan on eldtitch knight)

Alignment:goodish....

personality:I can stare down a hell hound.
I face problems head-on. Give me a reason to kill you anything will do.

Background: Deamon was born in Demoncraft. A drow city in which demon and deamon summoning is normal. And at some point all males are sacrificed to do this. His was second in the 23 house city.
He was bred and raised to be the best fighter in the city so as to train both male and female drow (of course he was beaten each time he won against a female). As such he's stronger and bigger than the average drow.
But as all males are sacrificed no matter rank he was still seen and treated as property, slave, trash... A life he neither liked or wanted. He was taught to believe all from the young to old, weak to strong must be able to fight. And so he sees those who can't as weak and useless. As even those like him are considered nothing. He excelled at all weapons especially 2 weapons fighting. Blind fighting. And as magic and demons were constantly used fighting and using magic. He would be a powerful eldritch knight if he lived long enough.
As house weapons master he was also in charge of the house soldiers. His house and rank insignia could be tracked at all times, so both those under his command and all females could find him. His rank marked him as both general and house Lord... but still lower than the lowest female in the city.
His life was not good. better than most males but torture pain and enslavement was his lot. And the best he could hope for was a quick death in battle, rather than a sacrifice to Lloth.
At age 20 that's exactly what his house matriarch wanted to sacrifice him . As they were about to wage war on a moon elf city . His house figured that the best way to gain favor of Lloth was to sacrifice the best they had. But they had trained Deamon ( named such cause he fights like one) to well. And when they came to kill him he took the sacrifice dagger from the matriarch's hand and killed her with it. He then killed everyone else of his house. In a fierce battle, which the dagger was not made for. So somewhere along the way it broke. But he stopped by the armory for surface armor and weapons. Once he killed everyone he set the house on fire and tossed his insignia in. So as to give the impression that he was killed with the rest by a rival house.
It took him 2 years to make his way to the surface alone. And 2 more to get used to the light. Now he travels as a sellsword/ mercenary. He hated the drow life but has as yet to learn surface life well. He is mostly cold. Shelf concerned, killing machine. Who wants a better life. And is slowly learning. As no one is actually teaching him that killing for killing sake isn't good. It seems he is expected to know this.... And if ever his racial heritage is discovered( by forgetting a glove, or slip of his hood) he is chased and hunted. So far the surface hasn't been any better in his 6 years here than drow life was in the underdark.
Deamon has no home friends or family. And is always traveling.

Recently he meet a sage hiring adventurers. Since this quest was underground Deamon was able to convince him that none would be better for this undertaking than one who was born in the underdark. Seldom has he had a chance to prove he wasn't evil, dark and brooding killer he maybe. But not evil like his kin. Even if he still has to learn what being good meant.

Bonds: currently none!

Ideals: Independence
Flaws:I leave little respect for those who aren't proven warriors.
I'd rather eat my armor than admit I was wrong.

Appearance: 6ft muscled drow warrior. With death in his red eyes. Short very short white hair. He wears clothes as black as his skin, even his leather armor is black. Sporting two swords, With a look as if killing with them would be easy. Has a bow quiver and travel pack. Looks like someone always on the move.

This sounds like a fantastic adventure! So much lore, so much homebrew; I'm practically shivering with excitement! I'm definitely posting interest on this, and planning to read over the advertisement and the extra info more/again, to come up with something I hope will be good!

ApplicationName: Arai Fudo
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Monk
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Background: Hermit
Personality: Fudo is normally calm -- even in the face of danger.
He believes in knowing one's self -- self awareness is the path to true enlightenment, and true power
His isolation has given him some insight into a great evil, which he believes it is his duty to guard against
However, he harbours a dark secret of himself
Appearance: Fudo stands over seven feet tall, towering over most everyone he meets. He is also rather thin. Much thinner than his pure blooded Orc kin, though not so skinny as anyone would call him willowy or scrawny -- he is much too well muscled for that. His skin has a greyish cast, his hair is black and short, though not close cropped and his eyes are green. He keeps his hair out of his eyes with a black band tied around his head, and he wears an black sleeveless tunic and loose fitting pantaloons. His pants are kept tight around his claves with strips of black cloth and his forearms, wrists and palms are similarly bound; his hands and feet are otherwise bare. He carries a short sword sheathed at the small of his back, with a thin red ribbon trailing from the pommel.
Backstory: "You have immense potential child. How that potential will affect the world, is up to you."
Fudo does not remember a time before the cloister. His earliest memory is being brought before the abbot, and being told he could not leave. He remembers his time there learning control, self discipline and self awareness. And at 18 years old, he was told it was time for him to go. His destiny was not like that of the brothers; he was not meant for a life of study and contemplation, but for a life of purpose.

Application - Talemachus Brood
left-aligned image

Name: Talemachus Brood

Race: Downcast (Aurelian)

Class: Druid (planning Circle of Mutation)

Alignment: Neutral Good

Background: Outlander (Pilgrim)

Personality: Talemachus is thoughtful, careful, and deliberate, but those who think him shy and reserved haven’t seen the iron rod of determination that runs through his core. While others may baulk at what needs to be done, Talemachus has no such fear as doing necessary deeds is what drives him forwards - and indeed sometimes away from comfort and peace. Slow to anger and respectful of others, his methodical path through life is as inexorable and endless as the seasons themselves.

Description: Talemachus is slightly shorter than most, but lean and long-limbed. He has striking delicate features hidden behind whorls and streaks of tribal markings across every scrap of visible skin. At first glance his eyes appear milky and dull, but upon closer inspection they are the lightest blue-grey and as piercing as a hawk. He keeps his scalp scraped clean of hair, though is rarely seen without a hood of some kind so that his pale face seems to constantly float in a pool of shadows.

Backstory: For a long time after his fall, Talemachus lived a remote, unremarkable life. Divinity faded from the world, and along with it went the shard details of his past life and the burning desire to restore that lost order. Indeed the teeming masses of the lesser races became irritating reminders and he found himself more often alone, or moving with tribes and travellers far from civilisation.

So it was probably natural that he finally settled for a time with a druidic enclave within the forests around Tol Leyel, finding the pleasant balance of isolation, community, and purpose. In fact, there were three other downcast amid their numbers, all with that same look in their eyes of finally finding something that was missing within them. None of them shared words of their previous lives, but they did share the comfort of knowing that collective hurt wound would not be reopened.

For many centuries, that was his life: ensuring the health and balance of the forest, and that knowledge and tradition passed through the generations that mortals suffered. He took the natural magic of the earth inside of him, and in return he kept darkness and decay from breaking the cycles of death and renewal that had turned since the world had been birthed. As such, much of the early upheaval that now shadowed these malign days was kept at bay. But that could not last. More and more, the Enclave’s work seemed treacherous and unending and the terrible news of the world outside their haven was harder to keep out.

It wasn’t the fear that finally pushed Talemachus out of his inertia, but the implications. Perhaps it was his longevity, the knowledge of seeing life on a different scale to those others. As one too many story of terrible darkness ravaging some ever closer part of the continent forced and gathering of the whole Enclave, a minority of Talemachus and several others pressed for action. But the majority opted to sit and simply fortify. Frustrated and angered, the dissenters argued that change was coming and they needed to adapt - to use their intimate knowledge of the land and its beasts to intervene. To counter the abominable horror already being done across the world by the Great Beast, and the darkness seeping from the City Below.

Such a suggestion was met with horror, and in a single night the Enclave was split. Talemachus and his faction left, vowing to spread themselves across the world, searching for the knowledge and means to fortify life itself, so that it may survive the coming storm. They left, likely never to all meet again given the state of the world. And Talemachus took his posting and headed East, towards Southern Ostoyan in search of anything mysterious and unknown.

Character application
right-aligned image

Name: Caelynn "Dove" Holimion
Race: Wood Elf

Class: Fighter (archery-style)
Background: Criminal (smuggler)

Alignment: neutral good

Personality: Caelynn is a friendly sort, though somewhat private. She enjoys hanging out with her peers and is known to take the occasional lover, though she never lets it become serious. If asked about her past, she says that she was a hunter. She longs to return to her homeland and seek out her parents, which were in the process of being captured by the authorities the last she saw them. She misses having a group of close people that she can count on and trust implicitly - like the smugglers that she worked with before her life was turned upside-down. Being alone can be hard sometimes and she's come to terms with doing what she must to survive and earn gold, although she does not enjoy killing. Yet, it's difficult to put an arrow in somebody without death being a distinct possibility. It's easier when the target proves themselves to be awful.

Personal Characteristics

Trait 1: I like to drink and have fun with friends. I like feeling drunk (within reason). I think I'm funny when I'm tipsy and think everyone else is funny too.

Trait 2: I want to live free. Don't try to tie me down. Don't get too serious. I can be your friend, maybe even a lover, but don't talk to me about marriage or making any kind of long-term arrangements or agreements. I'm not going to swear an oath to you.

Ideal: I genuinely like people and believe that there are still people of good heart in the world. You just have to look hard enough to find them.

Bond: I will rescue my family members from whatever fate has befallen them, once I am able.

Flaw: Uninquisitive. I don't tend to ask clarifying questions or look deeper than what is presented on the surface.

Backstory: Caelynn fled the Charneault Kingdom when her family's smuggling operation was discovered and assaulted by the Knights from the Order of the Blood Spear. A bounty was placed on the heads of anyone involved, so Caelyn and a few others crossed the border into the Bürach Empire and have been trying to lay-low ever since. She was the only one to actually complete the journey. The others were killed by a beast made of shadow. Caelynn has sought work as an archer-for-hire, ever since - protecting city walls or private property for the wealthy.

One such person was Lord Blenach who hired Caelynn to help guard his estate. There, she met and started a torrid affair with the Lord's daughter, Jeskra. Late one night, another guard tipped Caelynn off to the fact that Jeskra was to be sacrificed to a devil by her father in exchange for great power. Caelynn hurried to try to rescue Jeskra but arrived too late. Jeskra was dead and the Lord was being dragged to the realm below because the sacrifice had not been a virgin as promised.

Shortly thereafter, once the shock had worn off, Caelynn decided to stop working for corrupt nobles and strike out as an independent adventurer. Perhaps then, she could be more selective about who she worked for and maybe fight against evil once in a while.

Why "Dove"? Because I'm very, very white for a Wood Elf. (It was actually a code name she used whilst working with the smugglers.)

Build Details
Strength12
Dexterity17
Constitution12
Intelligence8
Wisdom14
Charisma13

Trained skills: Perception, deception, stealth, athletics, acrobatics

Hey everyone. Glad to see interest right out the gate. I'll throw up a chart to track the applications tomorrow.

Maera Sephiran
Eladrin (Season Winter) Wizard (Order of Scribes)

Alignment: Neutral Good
Background: Charlatan
  • Personality Traits: Flattery is my preferred trick for getting what I want. I'm a born gambler who can't resist taking a risk for a potential payoff.
  • Flaw: I'm convinced that no one could ever fool me the way I fool others.
  • Ideal: Aspiration. I'm determined to make something of myself.
  • Bond: I owe everything to my mentor – a horrible person who's probably rotting in jail somewhere.
Season Traits:
  • Autumn Traits: If someone is in need, you never withhold aid. Everyone is your friend, or a potential friend.
  • Winter Traits: Life is full of dangers, but you are ready for them. Your needs come first. In winter, all must watch out for themselves.
  • Spring Traits: Every day is the greatest day of your life. Toil is for drudges. Yours should be a life of leisure.
  • Summer Traits: You stand tall and strong so that others can lean on you. The best option is one that is swift, unexpected, and overwhelming.

Description: Maera is a lithe and well-shaped young woman, standing five feet and seven inches tall and weighing 104 pounds. She has fine features like all of her kind, and her eyes look to be golden in color, a stark contrast to her dark hair. She generally wears dark-colored garments which accentuate her figure, as well as a tall hat that keeps her fair complexion out of any direct light.

Personality: Maera is like most Eladrin enjoys the wonders of the world and does her best to find beauty in almost everything she sees and does. She is quick to make friends with others and is quite outgoing, almost to the point of aggression at times if she is truly interested in someone. Of course, her outgoing attitude makes it easier for her to approach others to ply her wares or barter for items that have struck her own fancy.

Backstory: Maera was very young when she first left her home traveling with her father to see the world beyond the feywild. It was during the said trip that they wound up in a small human city her father looking to sell his wares. While there the city was attacked and during the ensuing battle, the two were separated. Maera hid in an alley trying to avoid anyone's sight for as long as she could until the fighting died down. Finally emerging she saw the market where her father and she had been selling his goods. Making her way over carefully she found that the market itself was in total disarray. As she reached the stall where her father had been she found his body. He had been killed in the battle when he had urged Maera to hide. Dropping to her knees, crying she lost track of time until she felt a hand on her shoulder. Turning and looking up a human woman offered her a warm smile.

The woman helped her up and brushed her offer by taking her hand and leading her away from the market. Maera gave a final glance back at her father but followed the woman. The woman led Maera from the market and to a wagon. Opening the back there were several other children within already. The woman guided her inside moved to the front and drove the horses from town with the wagon in tow. Maera was scared and alone and amongst people she had never met before so she moved into a corner and curled up, drifting off into a troubled sleep. When she woke the wagon was no longer moving and the children were outside the wagon by the sound of things. Slowly making her way out she saw the woman and the children gathered around. Moving over the woman looked at Maera.

Maera was surprised to learn that the woman was teaching the children all sorts of tricks, and telling them tales. Over the course of nearly 10 years she traveled with the woman who she had learned was not the kind and caring type but driven, and manipulating. All of the children her included were required to each day go out and run a variety of con's to earn coins. If a child had a bad day they went without food or worse beaten. It was a difficult life and for some time she sorely missed her father. Still she was too busy most days or nights to even think about such things. Feeling like the group of children were the only family she stayed with them until everything changed.

One evening while working outside a local tavern, she heard a commotion from within. Her mentor of sorts had been inside as usual out of the cold and wet always enjoying herself while her children as she called them did their work. The guard arrived shortly after the commotion which caused her to pack up her things quickly it was generally better to avoid the guard if able. Still, she watched from across the street as they brought the woman out her wrists in chains and apparently beaten quite badly. That night as the children returned to the wagon where they all slept they waited and Maera told the others what she had seen. After several hours the woman had still not returned so everyone bedded down when morning came, the woman had yet to return and the children uncertain of their futures began to wander off one by one.

Maera after several hours still fearing the woman's anger decided the woman may not be returning and took the chance to slip away as well. She was working a corner doing sleight of hand when a man in robes of silver and blue walking by stopped and watched her closely. She began to feel uneasy and decided it was best to move to another location unless the man called the guard. As she put her things away the man moved forward and addressed her. He told her that her sleight of hand was quite good, better than most even. Still uncertain of the man's intentions she turned to go. As she did the man spoke telling her that if she liked he could teach her some real magic. He went on to tell her that his apprentice had moved on and he was seeking another, and her skill caught his eye. Of course, he didn't mention that he saw her disheveled attire and dirty hands and face. Smiling he pointed to a large building with stone columns in front. He went on to tell her he was a scribe of sorts, and any apprentice was afforded a clean place to live and three meals each day. On top of that, they were also taught a trade that would serve them far better than anything she could do on the streets.

Maera at first was uncertain but nodded and followed the man into the Library she was amazed by all the books and people working within. She followed the man to an office and he informed an older man that she would be his new apprentice. They recorded her name and provided her with robes of her own, and she was shown to the bath area and allowed to bathe and dress in her new clean clothing. Then she was taken to the housing and given her own small room. It was certainly no larger than the wagon but still, it had a desk and a bed and it was hers alone. Once situated she was brought back to the man, who smiled as she came in. Thus began her training in not only the art of scribing and documenting but also magic in its truest form. Real magic, not the simple sleight of hand she had done on the streets. She excelled and knew it was partially because of the woman and what she had taught her. He even taught her to read and write in the Draconic language which she enjoyed very much.

After 6 years the time came for her apprenticeship to end. It was bittersweet she was eager to see more of the world and use her newfound skills, yet she knew she would miss the library and the people she knew there. A final goodbye and she was on her own, at first she had to rely on her selight of hand quite a bit, but in time she was able to begin using minor magic as well combining the two to make a steady income.

Name: Sarduk
Race: Human
Class: Barbarian
Alignment (Prefer no evil): Lawful Neutral
Background: Outlander
Personality: A brutal realist, Sarduk realizes that order is everything. The world he walks has rules, concrete rules. If Sarduk is going to get what he wants, he will need to understand how to use those rules to his advantage. Sarduk is ambitious and ruthless, as his upbringing demands. However he has seen the flaws in letting things go too far, and how such errors can topple the ambitions of even the greatest leaders. So he knows when to keep things tucked away, and when to let them loose, acting with a brutal cunning that can stun those expecting him to be another brainless killing machine.

Description: A hulking brute from the north, Sarduk carries himself with calculated brutality that is meant to simultaneously inspire fear while letting watchers mistake him for a mindless brute. Cords of iron musculature move beneath his scarred flesh, and Sarduk makes sure people see it all, wearing an outfit more suited to the gladiatorial arena than polite society. This outlandish garb is completed with a faceless helm of crude iron, which hides his steely gaze and adds to the impression of being a mindless brute.

App
right-aligned image

Name: Elliot Pherae
Race: Human
Class: Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Background: Soldier (Officer)
Personality: Elliot is a believer in optimism, despite his experiences in the horrific field of battle, his comrade has taught him to take things in stride in the most chaotic of times. He took that advice to heart cause his life is always a constant change, whether it was good or bad. His teachings and upbringing has made him well-mannered person, showing politeness and respect to anyone he meets. Though, taking advantage to that hospitality is ill-advised, for he has seen war first hand, and can be ruthless and vengeful to those that have irk him.
Description: Elliot stands at an average height, 5'6" feet high and a weight of 132 pounds, sporting a lean figure. He usually wears formal clothing for casual meetings, but when he has to do his job, he usually wears his mage officer's uniform as a matter of pride and, well, you never know when rank is needed to gain access. With the uniforms comes white gloves, a decorative staff that can be attached to the uniform (using it mostly to support himself from his limp), and a plain black tie. He has a youthful face, but it may be a surprise to some that his already past his 40's, though his bloodline probably helps support his youthful appearance. Theirs no noticeable feature about him except his right arm, it's more clawlike and has red scales covering it, it is abnormal compared to the rest of his appearance.
Backstory: Elliot's history was a torrent of events that an average man would only experience one or two of them, and some seem highly improbable. Firstly, Elliot was born into a small noble family in the great The Bürach Empire, he lived his childhood in nobility. He had it all, until his mother died of sickness,(of which some suspect foul play) and his father vanished from the family soon after,(though some believe he ran off with another mistress, he did had a reputation among the younger women). So Elliot was left by himself, he had no known relatives to be looked out for, so he was taken care in by a family friend, Sol Pherae (a former military vet and single mother for three kids, and now she's going to adopt a fourth, yeah...). The young boy was taken into the household, though he lived a life more disciplined and stricter than his wealthy and hedonistic life,All info bracket have been generously provided by Ms. Pherae(he would have an inheritance, yet somehow all his wealth was stolen as soon as his father left him). Elliot didn't dislike that life, he wouldn't have been the man he was if he wasn't taught so harshly. His foster brothers were his pals, they treated him like they were real brothers. But they differ in aspirations, they wanted to live simple lives, one wanted to be a dancer, other merchant, however Elliot wanted to be a soldier, he wanted to do so cause he admires his Foster mother so much that he wanted to make her proud of him. This might of been a sign that his life was never going to be simple, when puberty came, Elliot started developing magical abilities. All the water started to boil, and fires started appearing out of nowhere in the house, Elliot's foster family thought this was nothing but an ill omen. It wasn't until he started to grow red scales around his arms that they started to understand what was really going on. Elliot's bloodline was tainted by a dragon, it's unknown when or how, but it's clear that Elliot was a sorcerer. They tried hiding it, Elliot started making a habit of wearing gloves and coats, though some reason he doesn't feel bother by this. However, as he come of age, it became harder and more riskier to hide his abnormalities, so he started to come clean on his own. He knew of the dangers he would put on his new family if they kept hiding it, so he did what he did. When it was revealed, a lot of people that he called friends treated him like an outcasts and we're outright hostile to him. He expected yet it still hurt, he had a glimpse of society's scorn for the first time. He understood this world wasn't kind, but his knows that his new family always has his back in this world.

Once he came of age, he signed up on a mage license for himself and enlisted in the army. People looked at him with either fear or hate, especially when his right arm was too noticeable to even conceal anymore, the military was no different in regarding Elliot's status. But he was not alone, his regiment included other mages, so he wasn't alone in that feeling. He even had a best friend, Abe, who was like a mentor to him, and was always calm, shame he never made it, he always wanted to explore this world when he gained enough military experience. The army's battles were grueling and merciless, Elliot was only witnessed to three battles and yet his lucky to have ever survived those three. It was a battle of continuous onslaught, doesn't matter if the foes are the living dead, monsters, or just simply men, it was all the same. Those fights were senseless and brutal, taking months or even years to end. Elliot has lost many friends and enemies alike, the only reason he left those horrors was either through dumb luck or horrible misfortune. The last fight his regiment were on, they were on the losing side. All across the battlefield were explosions, many were screaming in agony and some, well some met a fate worse than death. His regiment was on the retreat until... Boom, most of his team were blown and burnt to bits, including Elliot himself. He was unconscious, the only reason he survived though was thanks to his friend that carried back to base. His friend didn't make it though.

Elliot was put on leave and thanks to his foster mother's influence, put to early retirement. His leg injury was a good enough excuse, he suffered minor life-threatening injuries luckily but he was somewhat crippled and his powers even dwindled as he recovers. It took him a long time to recover, and it was not a full recovery, he still has that limp as a reminder of his experience during those battles. However, he didn't feel sad about the this trauma, he saw this as a reminder of his friend's sacrifice and ideals. For a few years, he lived with his foster family and tries getting use to his leg injury. He then left the empire entirely to live a life of freedom and adventure as his friend aspired to do.

Interested. App complete for a gnome rogue.

Character Concept
right-aligned image

Name: Sormus Mutcher, but he prefers "Mutch"
Race: Rogue (progressing to Arcane Trickster)
Class: Forest Gnome
Alignment: Chaotic Good/Neutral (tries to do the right thing sometimes but is inherently selfish)
Background: Sage (Wizard's Apprentice)

Personality:
Brilliant, stubborn, methodical, and quick-witted, Mutch is about as clever a gnome as you would ever hope to meet. Although others his age enjoyed the outdoors in their youth, Mutch was always an indoor fellow and he prefers walls and ceilings over wide open spaces. He especially enjoys exploring caves, ruins, and old buildings - the dank smells, the dim lights, and the cozy feeling of closeness was always exciting to him. Whereas other gnomes talk at a rapid fire pace, Mutch is more slow to speak and tends to enjoy making elaborate foolproof plans to ensure the highest amount of success on his excursions. He is brave and adventurous, and enjoys a bit of risk if there is gold at the end of it. He can be a bit sharp-tongued and self-serving at times, but Mutch overall sees him as just a regular man trying to survive in this world. Mutch finds it difficult to forgive anyone and will bear a grudge until the day he dies unless he finds a way to restore

Description:
Short, lithe, and pale of skin, Mutch reminds you of a goblin more than a gnome. He has coarse features and a shaved head, with pointed ears and a pronounced brow. He has a pointed nose and thin lips, with a set of beady dark eyes and yellowed teeth that seem a bit too large for his head. He wears a loose olive colored tattered jacket over a dull looking suit of leather armor, with black cloth gloves on each hand with the fingers cut off. Around his waist is a thick leather belt from which hangs a brace of daggers and a dingy looking short-bladed sword. On his feet are a sturdy looking set of traveling boots, and on his back he wears a ratty but functional backpack.

Backstory:
Mutch's parents were already domesticated forest gnomes, so unlike many of his peers Mutch was born in the capital of Ostoya. Mutch does not know his parents as when he was born, they showed little pity for the ugly, sickly-looking gnome and instead abandoned him at the orphanage. There the small pale youth was constantly bullied and abused by the adults and other children at the orphanage. Mutch endured it for years until he finally had enough, and when he was approximately seven years old he left the orphanage and began living as an urchin on the streets. He lived that way for several months until he met his master, Ormarion.

Ormarion is a highly talented half elf wizard, and when he first met Mutch and saw his clever usage of his innate illusionary abilities, Ormarion realized Mutch had serious natural talent. Taking the boy in as his own apprentice, soon Mutch was learning more than he had ever known about anything before. Ormarion was a phenomenal teacher and wizard, but due to his advanced age he is prone to napping or forgetting what he was doing in the first place. Although Mutch excelled in his studies, when Ormarion lost his attention and went to do other things, Mutch would sneak out and run around with his mischief-making friends. Their antics were mostly harmless, although as they grew older there was a vigilante task or two in which they stole from some local lout and donated the proceeds to those who were really in need.

When the Nightseer Sage was seeking responsible adventurers for a delicate task at hand, Ormarion thought this would be a good field test of Mutch's magical talents and encouraged Mutch to take the job and prove his worth to all. On his end, Mutch is thrilled at the possibility for adventure and can't wait to get started.
