June PotM

left-aligned image

In case your Dutch isn't on fleek; it says: do now mow in May, meaning that you should let your garden grow this month and let the bees be buzzing around without distraction. Why is it the image in this post? Just a reminder to save the bees, always important..

Besides that, I am writing this while the rain is pouring down and the sky is full of thunder and lightning. Exactly the right weather to stay inside, cross the Crossing, read some posts and decide to: nominate!!!! I think we all have that moment that while reading a post in your game you burst out in laughter. Maybe you are reading and wondering about it, a memory triggered and/or you feel inspired by the way of writing, getting a character's goal/ambition or thoughts across. It can be so many things that 'moved' you and we want to know about it.

Please share it with us, and make a post in this thread! This way the post is going to be read by so many others and you will spread joy and wonder, who would not want to be responsible for that???
What to do:
  • Mention what game and where, who wrote it, and link that post
  • Explain why you were motivated to nominate this post. What made you enjoy this post so much that it is worth to be shared and seen?
  • only nominate a May-post, and only nominate once
  • Consider to nominate your own post if you want to have it be read by many RPG crossing members and not just your own group. You worked hard for it so share and nominate if you think you made that special post

Let's fill this thread with nominated posts and share our admiration for the players who stood out this Month <3

Pity the spit boy
right-aligned image

Player: Horseman
Game: Reluctant Heroes / Germania thread
System: D&D 5e/3.5 mix
GM: Gibbon, Horseman and Rasgorn

In the low-magic, medieval setting of Reluctant Heroes, most of the world lives ordinary lives. Take for instance an unnamed spit boy in Castle Bradenbourg whose job it is to continually rotate a prize selection of game over a fire to ensure the meat remains juicy and evenly cooked. Then there's a troupe of entertainers just inside the gates trying to earn some coin by juggling and acting. All and all, just another ho-hum day in the late 13th century.

But as Horseman submerges us into these daily realities, he also sets us up for a collision with magical mayhem, in this case a player who attempted to shapeshift into a bear and rolled two critical fails in a row to entirely lose control of the transformation and turn everyone else's day into total chaos.

If I could nominate every player in my game so far, then I probably would - they've all made such beautiful entrances with beautiful characters. But something tells me I'm stuck with one nomination, so it's going to have to be...

June's POTM
left-aligned image
Player: Touketsu
Game: The Lawless City - Group A
System: Pathfinder
GM: Lentil Sponge

Summary of the Post: Touketsu's character, Damien, is one of six people hired by notorious casino owner and alleged gangster Tilly One-Eye Gansog to escort a valuable chest across town. Unfortunately, when they get to a checkpoint at the bridge, Tilly's bouncers go missing, the guards attack and the entire party is knocked out and viciously beaten. The game begins as they wake up in Tilly's casino, with the chest gone and themselves in a huge debt to Tilly, who now bursts in on them none-too-pleased and threatening to force them into work at the casino (and none of that work could be considered fun and safe).

Damien himself has his own aspirations of being a gangster, but he is a sly, intelligent fellow. He (correctly) deduces that the guards attacking was no tip-off but an orchestrated ambush. While carrying the chest, he had seen the same kobold pass by them twice. But he also knows that Tilly, while she is dangerous, thinks she's more dangerous than she actually is. So, appealing to her more arrogant nature, he deferentially apologises, explains what happened and suggests that, rather than being slaves for Tilly, the party would be far more valuable in hunting down the kobold and any others involved in the ambush.

Reason for Nomination: The obvious reason to nominate this is that, put simply, it's just a fantastic post. It's well written, and Touketsu's style brings you into the mindset of Damien. You can sense his frustration at being ambushed, his need to regain control of the situation, and how he does so. It's one thing to know how a character is thinking when writing in first person. It's another to do it in third person.

However, I'm also really impressed with how obvious it is that Touketsu did their research. The only clue that they had to Tilly's arrogant side is a bit of the description of her in the application thread and one post. But taking just one sentence about Tilly forgetting that she isn't THE most dangerous criminal in the city, Touketsu clearly thought "How would Damien take advantage of this?" and then wrote that. Often, when people roll Diplomacy, they just write down something and then the dice roll decides if they're successful or not, but you can tell that Touketsu used the roll to inspire his writing. A beautiful blend of roleplay and roll-play.

This is the first of two nominations from me … while I’d love to nominate the pair of posts as a single entry, each alone is worthy of consideration – so I thought I would leave it to you judges to deliberate

June's POTM Player: Tomplum
Game: Heart of the Shadow
System: D&D 5e
GM: Tomplum

Summary of the Post: To truly appreciate this post, you should follow TP’s instructions and read along with the accompanying music.

We are reaching the conclusion of this game, where TP has shown his hall of fame credentials in shaping a dreamlike journey into the Shadowfell. Over the adventure TP has drawn us deeper and deeper into the realm of his villain, the Thistledown man. The gameplay has been both unconventional and inspiring. We are now in the ballroom of the Thistledown man – he has disappeared with one of our number Khloe (played by Jennifer), only to reappear in this macabre dance. A dance that may release the Thistledown man from his curse and free all our characters from the Shadowfell

This post weaves content that TP and Jennifer have been creating towards this spectacular conclusion.

And how best to do that? Well to the lyrics of Black Sabbath of course. In fact, now I think of it I wonder if the whole game is a Black Sabbath concept album!

But the spectacular thing is that it works. The lyrics get to the heart of the whole purpose of the game and the dramatic turning point that (may) bring satisfaction. The interspersing of descriptive text, lyrics, pictures and the music create something in a way I’ve not seen here before …

I just can’t wait to see how Khloe will react…

This is the second of two nominations from me … while I’d love to nominate the pair of posts, each alone is worthy of consideration – so I thought I would leave it to you judges to deliberate

June's POTM Player: Jennifer
Game: Heart of the Shadow
System: D&D 5e
GM: Tomplum

Summary of the Post: This is the second month Jennifer has been nominate in this game – for much the same reasons as the last one. The way she and Tomplum have weaved their stories together is wonderful. It’s definitely a long post. That’s partly because it includes and responds to TP’s post – and partly because there was a lot to say!

In the last nomination, I talked about how well Tomplum had used music to tell his story. In this one, Jennifer replies with a switch of tunes that absolutely nail the dramatic contrast. We move from metal’s sense of doom and horror, through the fantasy of the DaVinci code to the triumph of Les Mis. Trust me, it works. In fact, don’t trust me, listen for yourself as you read.

Jennifer takes TP’s stanzas and uses them to tell the dramatic turns of the dance, where life is at stake – all for a kiss, given or received. She blends Sabbath’s black words of despair and turns them pink as she assert’s Khloe’s hope and positivity as she brings her ancestors and family to the scene.

And at the moment of the kiss, we see the gods themselves intervene in the scene in the moment and across history …

We are left in the dreamlike state with Khloe looking down on her erstwhile comrades fighting for their lives and the goddess Sune pronouncing a whispered fate for Khloe and the Thistledown man.

Player: Pseudonymous
Game: Tales from the Fen - Red Claw
System: DND5e
GM: Whats-his-face, the one with the smoking bear avatar. Retree?

Summary of the post: We often take for granted the absurdities that occur in games. Flying warlocks, tables that devour people, kobolds; so its refreshing (and often funny) when a player reacts in a logical manner to the absurd. No further context will be provided for this post

Player: Kaigen
Game: Wanderhome: The Road has a Song
System: Wanderhome
GM: N/A

Link to original post

Summary: A game like Wanderhome can sometimes expect a little more from its players to make up for the lack of a GM - players have more responsibility to provide NPCs and drama, rather than have it provided to them. Kaigen gets this game and its sensibilities. This post progresses the current mystery and lore, but also is resplendent with details in the room, the characters, the things that catch the senses.
