Welcome to the 16th year of IronDM! Gosh, 16 years. In the United States, this competition could drive. In Germany, I think it could legally drink! So, maybe think about what fine wine would pair well with the entries, brave participants and excited spectators.

Let's get some chatting happening as this year's Iron DM competition warms up! And don't forget to get those round zero entries in, so you can try and take the crown from Thaco!

If anyone has any questions, this is where to ask them.

The rule for discussion on ingredients applies to everyone, participant or not, so as not to bias judges. Since it has worked well the last few years, we will stick with the "once a match is completed, while the judges are judging entries, discussion of ingredients is allowed in this thread, as long as it is placed within a Spoilerbutton that clearly marks it as being ingredient discussion. (If you want to be safe, "Ingredient Discussion - Not to be opened by Judges" is an acceptable example you can copy).

Hrm. I like trying for Iron DM, but it may be a bit much for me this year ... can I just roll something for Stealth or Burglary and see if I scamper off with that crown?

Inem will have to be the final arbiter there. But I'd say that your check will at least require some substantial roleplaying to go along with it!

I can confirm it would legally be allowed to drink beer and wine in Germany. So here's to another year of a great competition!

A big shout out to all of the volunteer judges for their feedback. Sure, I may have misspent my youth DMing IRL, but with so little PBP experience, I treasure all advice offered.

How do people feel about the "compliment sandwich" method of providing feedback - where you start with something you liked, share your critical analyis, and then finish with a reference to a strength?

Really appreciate the judges time. It's going to be a little while before I feel like I've got time in my life to DM a game. But this event seems like a golden opportunity to get some useful advice.

I'm generally a fan of the compliment sandwich in daily life! It doesn't always work super well for judging, specifically. But I always try to highlight the stuff I loved about an entry and its strengths.

There's not typically judge feedback in round zero. But it's happened sometimes, if a judge gets itchy and wants to make some comments.

Any Public feedback from judges on round zero (if it happens at all) will only happen after the entries are all given and voted on. Before that, if a judge gives public commentary, it might bias people to vote for particular entries over others, which would be pretty unfair.

Compliment sandwiches tend to be a good way to deliver single pieces of criticism, but for any larger pieces of critique or judgement, they don't tend to hold up as well. Not that there's any really good way to pass along a lot of criticism -- it's a challenge to anyone who does it. But we try anyway.

In either case your next meal is invariably the evil twin of the compliment sandwich and no one likes the taste of that.
